I've been wanting to try Chef Wang due to all its Yelp reviews and being in the neighborhood. And, come on, let's be real? Who doesn't want to try Szechuan food? It happened on a Thursday afternoon when I didn't cook dinner and had to figure food out for take out. I ordered Chef Wang through doordash since they only deliver up to a certain radius. No biggie. The staff member that picked up the phone was very accommodating as I wanted a fried fish dish that wasn't on the menu for doordash, but he told me to put it in the special request and would make it! Brownie points here! So let's take a look at what I ordered: - Kung Pao Chicken- this dish was off the lunch special, which comes with (steamed, brown or white) rice and choice of soup. It was delicious and well made. I'm not a huge fan of peanuts so if you don't like them, request them to not put them in. - Fried Flounder Fillet with Peppers- this was not on the doordash menu, but was specially requested. Phenomenal. Though pricey (sitting at $21.95), it as unique in flavor (spicy) and it seemed like whoever thought of this dish put in a lot of effort into it. - Pan-fried pork dumpling- The dumplings were okay, but the sauce that came with it was good. Would I get this again? My husband says yes. I would definitely order from here again even though we had to use the bathroom after, but it was worth the comfort food on a cheat day! read more

Chef wang used to be my go to in the area, despite several short comings (some Items on the menu that are MAJOR fails, delivery estimates that are 45 minutes and take 2.5 hours to arrive, delivery drivers banging on your door after delivering the food to tell you that you haven't paid... when you did via credit card+tip.. to name a few) that I was willing to overlook for the only decent xiao long bao that I know of in the area. However, I will NEVER give them my business again after the way the owner treated me on the phone after cancelling my order that was placed 2.5 hours prior. I ordered a few items for delivery which included one tuna roll. After 2.5 hours, I got a message from grubhub saying my entire order ($80 of food) was cancelled because they didn't have a tuna roll ($6...) at the request of the restaurant. I called chef Wang and spoke with the owner who was COMPLETELY unapologetic, and In fact extremely rude. I asked him to just charge me for the entire order including the sushi roll, or to take my credit card over the phone so that I could get my order. I was basically desperate because it was 8:45pm during the coronavirus pandemic And nothing else was open for takeout. But the owner was unwilling to work with me- a loyal customer as I explained- and told me "fine, never order from us again". It's a shame during a time like this that a restaurant owner would be so unappreciative Of his customers. And for what it's worth, the Kung pao chicken is a heaping pile of dog poo. The entire dish tastes like raw ginger chunks, and too many of them (I stupidly gave it a try 3 times because I wanted to like this place). And I thought this before this incident. It was a really cold day and I was craving for something comfy and hot. I immediately searched online for good places to get sesame chicken. I ultimately came accross this place a decided to gove their lunch special a try. It did not disappoint! The dish was so tasty! The food and staff are amazing! My family and I have been there twice. My family and I had the pan fried pork dumplings, Mongolian beef, General Tsos chicken, chicken with garlic sauce, beef and chicken lo main and the chicken fried rice from the two times we went there and they were all very tasty and brought out extremely quickly. My personal favorites were the general Tsos chicken and beef lo main. The server was also very attentive and they also refilled our water very quickly. Parking was also extremely convenient as the lot is pretty big and is right next to the restaurant. However, be aware that there are a lot of people in the lot at busier times picking up food so parking can sometimes be annoying. Overall amazing place! read more

Really good food! Delicious & well presented in a nice sit-down restaurant setting. I went with my kid who doesn't like to experiment with new things so we kind of stuck to the "Chinese food" staples like dumplings, chow mei fun and pork chops but they were all much better than the typical take-out joint plus we enjoyed an evening out. The thin sliced pork chops were tasty and crispy and drenched in a sweet & tangy barbecue-type sauce. The place was full of all kinds of diners like families and couples and it's very clean. Inside and outside look starkly different! This place is really a 'hidden' gem in New Hyde Park. From the service to the food (also there's parking!!!), every part of my experience was amazing! It's beautiful and spacious inside, and all of the servers were super welcoming and helpful. We were recommended to try the Braised Tender Sliced Beef in hot chili oil & I loved it. My friend and I shared this dish (w/ one rice bowl) and the scallion pancakes as our appetizer, and it was the perfect amount. The scallion pancakes were so simple, yet so delicious (the right amount of saltiness and crunchy-ness). One thing I didn't like, however, was that our waitress and other servers kept asking us if we were finished with our food when we were clearly not finished! This place is a prime example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. I've passed by Chef Wang's for over five years and always thought of it as just any other restaurant. Last night my girlfriend and I were looking for a place to eat with great flavors and this place popped up in our search. It being a Saturday night we had to wait for a half-hour as the place was busy. Upon being seated we waited a while before being waited on for about 10 minutes but once that happened it was all good from there. You're given salted peanuts while you wait. We order the Scallion Pancake and Sishuan Dumpling with Roast Chili Sauce. They arrived quickly and were great. Salty and savory. For the meal, I ordered the Chicken with orange flavor, crispy and spicy. My girlfriend had the Crispy Shredded Beef with three vegetables. Both come with rice. Both dishes were hot, spicy, and full of flavor. Without the rice, they would be constant flavor bombs, but the rice mellowed it out. The servers were very attentive and friendly. After the meal, we were served oranges to cleanse the pallet. We will be back to try more of the menu. read more

Food was great -3 stars for the piece of women's hair I got in my mouth while eating the sesame chicken. The hair was clearly the red color of the waitress who was serving us. We all have short black hair. The waitress who's hair it was said it probably flew into the plate from the floor. I was very surprised by this place. My sis and I went for Xmas dinner. Parking kinda sucks but I have a small car and I am an excellent driver so I had no issue squeezing my car into a small spot! We were seated immediately which was nice! Our waitress came very quickly and she was super energetic, no nonsense kinda girl lol which we loved. We ordered our food based on her recommendations and I loved my food-my sis did not like her fish much but I think that's just her taste (I am eating it as left overs lol and have no complaints). I had the soft shell crab, nice and spicy, fresh and delicious with a steaming bowl of rice! Mind you, I am all about that Paleo life, but not that night! It was comfortably warm in the space, quick service and fresh food! It was nice to see that I don't have to drive to Flushing to enjoy delicious Chinese food! Next time I will try the hotpot. Visited this establishment on Mother's Day because Mom only eats spicy and really we have exhausted our Indian and Thai options. So my sister picked this place and it seemed rated quite well on Yelp. So away we went. Although I am bad at relinquishing control and letting other pick restaurants, I was hoping for the best. So let's just get into it..... let' just say I won't be coming back here. Really mediocre meal. Most of the items were really hit or miss. We ordered over 10 items and shared family style and I'll go through dish by dish for posterity because some dishes were REALLY good, and some were so bad that after the first bite... it was a no-go. Complimentary Tea - Just yes. Appetizers: Classic Egg Roll - was A-OK nothing special and some of the ingredients did not seem fresh. - 3 stars. Fried Calamari - for the price, the portion was quite skimpy. For 7 people at the table, we each got 1-2 pieces. Ingredients and taste was good - 4 stars Sishuan Pork Dumpling with Roast Chili Sauce - amazing. we ended up ordering another because it was definitely the best thing on the menu. Should have just gotten two orders of this and called it a day. - 5 stars Entrees Braised Pork Belly with Chestnut - easily the best of the entrees, the pork was well made, but the flavor was really basic - 4 stars Three Pepper Chicken - absolutely awful, not even sure the flavor was edible. Completely overdone, with the spices. - 1 star Fried Lamb with Cumin - barely edible, again completely overdone with the cumin, that it overwhelmed the dish. - 2 stars Chengdu Roast Duck (on Duck) with Vegetables - I was not a huge fan of the spicing, but the actual lamb was decent. Probably wouldn't order this again. Was most definitely underwhelmed. - 3 stars Noodles/Rice Chicken + Shrimp Fried Rice - decent but nothing special, could have had a bit more flavor, think it was just missing the oomph, if you know what I mean. - 3 stars Pad Thai with crushed peanuts and bean sprouts, quite good but they made it quite a bit sweeter than I am used to. - 3 stars Singapore Noodles with Chicken - Man did someone go happy with the turmeric. Couldn't eat more than few bites before being completely overwhelmed with the taste. Let's just say at the end of the day, everything is a bit underwhelming and I would not return with so many other options in the same area. I am truly angry. Angry I'm discovering this place three days before I move out of state. I had a craving for Sichuan cooking. I remember passing by this place a few times and figured I might as well check it out. It was now or never. I got takeout and was rather surprised/pleased that holes were cut in the top of the containers, presumably to vent the dishes. I stuck with my usual fried lamb with cumin. It's spicy, very spicy, but perfectly cooked. If I had one gripe, it was that the celery to lamb ratio was somewhat more in favor of the celery. Not full by any means but a couple of tables were full. They were quick to bring out peanuts, take our drink orders, and fill water glasses. So we order, not understanding that this is more family style. I order broccoli in garlic sauce which had a little spicy kick but it was SO good. My daughter tasted her noodle soup with braised beef and her face literally lit up, it reminded her of her trip to China. She said it was so authentic and delicious. My son had a spicy yellow tail roll and spicy tuna roll. He was very pleased. I tasted the yellow tail and it was delicious. My husband had the cooked beef in a pot which was very spicy and smelled like curry. I only tasted a bite because I don't do spicy and the lotus flower was delicious as the bamboo. My husband liked the flavor but didn't enjoy all the small pieces of Chile pepper he had to remove from his plate. It's hard and crunchy so I can't imagine that should be eaten, but i could be wrong. Upon walking in, the ambience was calm and peaceful, with an impressive live fish display, so I was expecting a service to match. Prices are decent and there is a wide variety of options to choose from, ranging from seafood, poultry, lamb, pork, and more. My friend ordered spicy general tso chicken (it wasn't either) and I ordered spicy Sichuan chicken (it wasn't spicy either). Both plates had this weird pepper that ruined the flavor of the chicken and we almost immediately lost interest in the entire plate. This place has great Chinese food, their General Tso's chicken is one of the best on the island. A lot of it Szechuan dishes stay true to the original blend of spices. I have been looking for a chinese restaurant in my area for some time now. I've heard about this place from Yelp and just recently a friend told me they had ordered from here and really enjoyed it. I took the family (a total of 3 of us) on a Monday night and was very happy with the overall meal, decor, cleanliness and service we received. The restaurant is very bright, the fish pond in front and overall decor made my experience a positive even before sitting down to eat. The place looked spotless and the host was attentive and quick to seat us. The service was good, however they may have been understaffed or just not expecting such a big crowd on a Monday so it was a little slow and random. Overall though, they treated us as best they could and I really appreciated it. For dinner we ordered a few appetizers and one meal to split; the appetizers were: the edamame, fried dumplings, scallion pancakes and an egg roll. We had the sesame chicken and pork fried rice for the main meal. The dumplings were excellent, they were not greasy or overcooked. The scallion pancakes were light and crispy, very good but could have used more scallions. The egg roll was crispy but a little over cooked, the filling and flavor were great. The edamame were my least favorite, they needed to be steamed more and needed more salt. The sesame chicken was prepared with red and green peppers, which is different than what we were used too but the peppers were not overpowering and even my daughter (8 yrs old) ate it with no problems. Finally the pork fried rice was served and it was a huge portion and was very good. It had a bit of a "sticky" consistency too it which I loved! The pork, eggs and onions were plentiful which complimented the rice perfectly. My only "complaint" was that they didn't serve duck sauce with crispy noodles at the beginning of the meal, instead they served peanuts. Nothing wrong with peanuts but it wasn't what I was expecting from a chinese restaurant. I gave this place 5 stars because not only was the meal and overall dining experience great, but they also took my daughters lemonade off the bill without any prompt from us because they realized she didn't drink it because she didn't like it (it was carbonated). I saw that a few of my friends including Dick G. really liked Chef Wang's. So be it, Chef Wang's for lunch today. I found the free parking easy in the early afternoon. Walking through the front doors I could immediately see that this was no ordinary take out joint. A Life Size bamboo Bridge served as My Gateway. A beautifully well kept koi pond and waterfall greeted me as I walked to my table. Looking around like it's see this was a large restaurant despite looking small from the outside. Inside is a full sushi bar as well as several large rooms for guests. A fully stocked standalone bar room and a peaked cathedral ceiling to top it off. Table service was swift courteous and professional. Yes! My ice water, hot tea, and "Tsing Tao" beer were placed in front of me within moments of ordering. For lunch today, I chose the fried pork dumplings and the "Kung Pao" chicken. 2 ordinary staples that'll show me what Chef Wang can deliver. First up was the hot and sour soup, this was included with my lunch. Perfect, they really got it right. What a perfect balance of spicy to sour and the viscosity perfectly on point. The classic pork dumplings arrived, authenticly prepared. Crispy on the outside, with the the dough tender and sticky. The dumplings were homemade and accompanying ginger sauce was packed with balance and flavor. I asked for some hot oil with seeds, just to kick everything up a notch hot. Then came the Kung Pao chicken, this Kung Pao had received a treatment different than I've seen in most restaurants. Great care had been taken in the preparation of this meal, the vegetable selected to accompany this dish were fresh and crisp and the chicken itself was crispy and tender. Served with a really kickin spicy brown sauce, but I of course continued to drizzle more spicy oil on the dish. The white rice served with the meal was a welcome fire extinguisher! My second cold beer came to the table quickly like there was a spring on it! While my water glass was constantly filled. I felt like the KING here at Chef Wang's and the serving staff was so kind to tolerate my imperfect Mandarin. Especially nice of them since I think they were speaking Cantonese. Ha ha. Chef Wang's offered me a wonderful sit-down experience, and I cannot wait to return and try other dishes and the sushi. I RECOMMEND all my Yelper Friends experience this "Wonderful Jewel" of taste. I really want to like this restaurant but it's not all it's hyped up to be. It might be one of the better Chinese food options in the area, but after reading the good reviews, you go in expecting it to be better than fast Chinese food, and it isn't that much better. My favorite thing to order at Chinese restaurants is hot and sour soup, and it was better than many places in the area here but lacked the kick I was hoping for. Could have used more pepper and vinegar. The mapo tofu also lacked something. It was really oily first of all, and didn't have that tangy flavor you expect it to have. I thought maybe it's a variation on the dish so I tried to bare it, but eventually I just couldn't stomach it. The chow fun and orange beef were good, as expected. I guess it really is hit or miss as others have said. Maybe I wasn't ordering all the right things. My husband tried the pork buns and he snubbed them after one bite. I'm a veteran eater at Chef Wang, and the service here took a nose dive and had become unreliable. I ordered food for pick up at 7:28pm and was told that it would be ready in 20 minutes. 15 minutes later I'm still waiting for my food. When I go to inquire about the status of my pickup at the front desk, the gentleman at the desk stated that it would be another 30 min for my order to arrive. Additionally when I requested hot oil with my pick up he snapped and said "don't tell me now." I understand the stresses of working in the service industry, especially when the house is busy, but being kind and understanding can go a long way. If customers are waiting for an order perhaps consider offering a complimentary drink or a smile when while apologizing for the inconvenience- both can go a long way. I was already a fan of their great food and service, but since the covid19 outbreak, this business has truly earned my respect! Although they are suffering great loss of business like all the small business owners, having to do all sort of cut backs and adjustments to keep the restaurant open, they continue to keep their menu price the same even though they are paying higher price for their supplies. On top of that, they have donated food to local hospitals each time they are asked, and never asked for any acknowledgements! I'm proud to be their loyal customer!
