I'm honestly surprised by some of the recent negative reviews because they don't match my experience here at all. This restaurant is always clean, and the retro, eclectic décor gives it a lot of character. The service has consistently been excellent. We never have to ask for anything beyond placing our order because our server always anticipates what we need, and every member of the staff has been friendly and polite. As for the food, this is easily the best American-Chinese restaurant I've had on Long Island. Our favorites are the General Tso's chicken, which is perfectly crispy and coated in just the right amount of sauce, the crab rangoons, which are generously filled with crab and cream cheese, and the house fried rice, loaded with a great mix of proteins and plenty of egg. If you haven't been here yet, I'd absolutely recommend giving it a try. Fantastic after so many years, this place still serves some of the best Chinese food. The waiters are dressed nicely in formal wear and even though it's located on a lower level, it's still decorated with lovely Asian designs. The service is very attentive. They have a full bar and a very extensive menu. Everything is well prepared, fresh, and not oily as some of those dishes tend to be at some places. We had bean curd and vegetables, sesame chicken, vegetable rice, and chicken and shrimp. My family found it all very delicious. We will definitely be back! read more

I had heard this is the best Chinese place in the area but I haven't tried anywhere else nearby. The food ingredients are good quality and the sauces good, but I felt like it could have been a bit better. The grand marnier shrimp were good but the sauce wasn't quite as flavorful as I wanted and creamier than I expected in a negative way. It was good though just not great. The shrimp were nice and big and cooked well. The garlic scallops' sauce was quite good but the scallops were overcooked as were the mushrooms. I really enjoyed the wonton soup. Get ready for a disco inferno vibe in Orchid's subterranean space, replete with mirrored ceilings, bright red carpeting and a beautifully decorated bar. Felt like a time warp from the '80s, in a good way! Started off with drinks, including a Tsingtao beer kinda overpriced at $10. Wonton soup and veggie spring rolls were very good, small portions. But we really came for the Peking duck which didn't disappoint. Loved the perfectly crisped skin, moist meat and elegant presentation with all the trimmings - thin wrappers, scallions and plum sauce. Our friendly server even made our rolls for us, a first in my long time experience! House special rice was packed with yummy ingredients including egg, pork and shrimp. Excellent taste with very little oil. Orchid is accessible by stairs or elevator through the back entrance. It's a large space so reservations aren't necessary except for large groups. Absolutely fantastic service! Greeted warmly and immediately seated. The waiter brought over a child seat without having to be asked. Our appetizer was like instantly brought to the table and was hot and tasty steamed dumplings. We ordered the House Special Fries Rice but without shrimp (due to fish/seafood allergy), the Sweet and Sour Chicken, and the Orchid Duck. We started with authentic noodles and sweet n sour sauce. Delicious. The food was amazingly cooked and seasoned. Nothing was salty or oily and the portions were enough to feed two! We left with Togo bags and enough for lunch ore even dinner for tomorrow. The restaurant is downstairs but there is an elevator in the rear parking lot. The restaurant itself looks amazing and the chandeliers are an elegant touch to the ambiance. I'm so disappointed in this place I have been coming here for years with not much of a problem.I have a 11 pound small emotional support dog very well behaved and I carry him in my arms I go in and want a drink and 1 eggroll to go the woman in the evening tells me he is not a emotional support dog.and says he is a heath hazard.all the waiters are always so nice to me and now I have to deal with this woman who also knows me for a long time and is being argumentive and mean to me they have NO problem taking my money? We all went to Orchid and we were not disappointed! The Duck was amazing!! So fresh and tender. They serve it beautifully and it was so plentiful. We also had the General Tao's Shrimp which was excellent has well The appetizers need a little help with variety & quantity for the money, but the wonton soup was old school and wonderful. The servers seem to pull tips, which is ok, but you do always see one more than the other..The place is wonderful and I'll definitely be going back!! But please serve thinner ribs, when their to thick, they lose their taste.... The ambiance was also old school which I enjoyed. I visited this restaurant yesterday with my girlfriend and was extremely dissatisfied with everything. Extremely understaffed for the size and demand of the restaurant, The servers were rude and were rushing us to order our dishes, and it ultimately took 1hr & 30 min for our food to come which was only 3 dishes. Larger groups were entering the building after us and receiving the food before us. A day later after attending this restaurant I contracted food poisoning throwing up consecutively from one of the shrimp dishes I ate which was extremely fishy and nasty. I contacted the merchant asking to get a refund for the unsatisfactory service and explained to them my concerns to which they only cared about lecturing me about food poisoning symptoms and going to the doctor to get a note for a refund!? They did not care about the service of the workers and ultimately they don't care about their customers. I highly suggest you stay far away especially if you aren't trying to contact food poisoning from overpriced mediocre dishes. read more

Delicious! Every dish was well seasoned. The general tso was the star of the show. The bok Choy was tasty but I've had better. The shrimp and broccoli with vegetables was good but the shrimp was too shrimpy if you catch my drift. If you can't get past the carpet not being clean you'll enjoy your dinner. Orchid is an incredibly beautiful Chinese restaurant in Garden City that reminds me of old-fashioned Chinese restaurants in terms of the decor. The decor alone was stunning and the restaurant was large, despite technically being in the basement. The food wasn't too bad and was fairly decent in terms of price and quantity for Long Island Chinese food. We had Velvet Corn with Crabmeat soup for two ($10.50), Mei Fun Singapore Style ($18.50), and Orchid Duck ($29.50). While I liked the Velvet Corn with Crabmeat soup, I probably wouldn't get it again. It had bits of crabmeat in it with pieces of corn in it. It was a decent size for the price and served two people but the taste was kind of bland. The Mei Fun was really good albeit a bit too salty. However, I liked the amount of curry powder used since it wasn't overwhelming and thought it was a generous portion for the price. It came with pork, chicken, and shrimp. Overall, it was pretty good although a bit on the oilier side so please be mindful if you're avoiding oily foods. The Orchid Duck wasn't too bad. The sauce was really good and the duck was well marinated and cooked to a good crisp. It came with a lot of vegetables and the portion size was decent for the price. The duck was tender and had a smokey taste, which paired well with the sauce. Overall, a decent dish that was semi worth the price. This is a really great spot for a nice dinner or lunch. It was fairly packed when we ate there around 7pm on a Friday night. It's great for large and small crowds, although I would recommend calling ahead to confirm. There is a reason that this restaurant has been here for decades. They are just magnificent. From the size of the venue, through the wall decorations and overall electricity that flows through the air here. Just another restaurant that consistently hits it out of the ball-park. Parking is fairly easy with the lots in back and across the street. I always found it unique to go downstairs to the restaurant. (I noticed someone complained about that... Really?) As our meeting progressed the waiters would bring the food to the tables family style. They would bring multiple dishes of the same food and we had plenty. The appetizers were just great. Egg Rolls, dumplings served the way you expect them. I do not know the names of all the dishes we received as I was a guest at this meeting. I can assure you that the chicken dish tasted fresh with well cooked pieces of tender chicken. All the vegetables were also tasty-fresh. Beef was also delicious. Very tender pieces of well cooked beef. Also well cooked fresh vegetables. The shrimp were great. Well cooked for that terrific snap when you eat them covered with a great sauce., This restaurant is not far from my house and clearly needs to be visited more frequently by myself and my wife. He left for a bit and returns and throws the check on the table face down and says thank you for coming! At this point I thought it was a joke and a birthday dessert was coming - no it wasn't a joke and nothing was coming - my husband then tried to get his attention as he passed by us and said excuse me but either he was deaf or rude and didn't aknowledge my husband. Disastrous Service & Poor Management - Avoid This Place! We went to Orchid Restaurant in Garden City for my mother's birthday dinner with a 6 PM reservation. Our party included five little girls (all under 9) and an infant less than 6 months old--so naturally, we expected to be accommodated promptly, especially in a packed restaurant where young children can become restless. Unfortunately, that was far from the case. * 6:00 PM: We were seated. * 6:30 PM: No one had even approached our table. * 6:45 PM: We finally got drinks and some chips after waiting 45 minutes--just for a simple snack. * 7:00 PM: We placed our food order. * 8:00 PM: After two full hours of sitting there, the appetizers finally arrived. By this time, the kids were understandably hungry and difficult to keep entertained. * 8:30 PM: Entrees were finally served--but only after we had to chase down staff for refills on drinks. At this point, it was clear that the owner/manager had no interest in providing good service--only in making as much money as possible. He crammed as many people as possible into the restaurant all at once, overloading the kitchen and servers with no regard for their ability to actually handle the volume. He even opened his catering space to seat an additional 50 people with only ONE server assigned to the entire room. This wasn't an oversight or a busy night gone wrong--this was a deliberate money grab. The manager didn't care that service was abysmal. He was more focused on packing the restaurant than ensuring a decent dining experience for his guests. Also, before you even consider eating here, do yourself a favor and check their health inspection report. You can easily find it by searching "Orchid Restaurant Garden City health report" online. This restaurant has been around for 40 years, but based on how it's run, I have no idea how. If you enjoy waiting two hours for mediocre Chinese food and being treated like an afterthought, then this is your place. Otherwise, skip it and order takeout from literally anywhere else. I will never step foot in this restaurant again. This version keeps the emotion and frustration but makes it clear, structured, and impactful while still warning others about the restaurant's issues.
