After two weeks of eating food in Italy, my mission once I got back to NY was to eat nothing but Asian food, especially Szechuan. Taste of Chengdu has been on my to-try list for a while now. I'm obsessed with dry hot pot. It's literally my favorite thing to eat, with its plethora of tangy mala spices and rich umami. A lot of places allow for you to pick and choose your specific ingredients, which I appreciate, but I also don't mind when it's on the menu simply as "mixed vegetables" as it is here. I've had a lot of dry hot pots and typically they are... dry. Not completely dry, there's always a fair amount of oil in there, enough to coat everything with spices. Just not served in a broth, like a hot pot or soup. My mixed vegetable "dry" hot pot was literally a bowl of vegetables in a cup or two of oil. The spices were delicious, but there was so much oil that I couldn't eat more than about 1/3 of it. The veggies were OK, but overcooked in the piping hot oil, a fair amount of impossibly chewy mushrooms and bell peppers that I don't care for, a couple slices of lotus, tiny bits of broccoli, baby bok choy and bamboo shoots. I also wished it came with tofu. It was overall very disappointing mainly because of the oil. I didn't waste takeout containers and left a considerable portion behind. I also had the spicy shredded potatoes app and it was good, but also fairly oily. My father and husband felt their food was also heavily oily (and they don't typically complain). Not sure if it was because they were short staffed (I felt bad for our waiter, who was trying hard to keep up but he was literally taking care of everything except the cooking) but there was no bar service... as in the shelves had been cleared and we weren't asked if we wanted a drink, but we were brought water. This looked so promising, I'd really wish try dine-in and I think will be much better. Unfortunately, this review is for DoorDash delivery. Problems: - no chopsticks, but a ten year supply of soy sauce and duck sauce packets (enough to open a restaurant), and not even needed for what was ordered. - chicken black bean sauce (lunch special) was plated on top of rice which absorbed all the sauce. Please don't do this. It's a restaurant not a food cart. Taste was mediocre at best. - mapo tofu (lunch special) tasty, but no ground pepper or pepper corn (the dine-in pics are different btw) - hot & sour soup containers (pretty good btw) was packed and placed on top of thin plastic lid to the chicken crushing the lid beneath, sauce for chicken (and mapo), spilled out and all over like a "shake n bake" commercial with all containers now well coated and covered with sauce. * I'd been place nearly same name (dine-in) in Seattle and that was a stellar 5 star review. Also been Chengdu a few times, but that wasn't an option. * I hope to revise this review if I ever get to dine-in, and not want to harshly penalize the kitchen and staff when they have so little control over deliveries. Got take out and not to be dramatic but I'm devastated :(( We loved this place for years (at least since COVID!) but we placed an order today and were so disappointed. The hot and sour soup and mapo tofu were flavorless like they were diluted w hot water. The dandan noodles were mushy and somehow the sesame paste was bitter... the owner must have changed recently bc they didn't even have the spicy beef noodle soup that we used to get. The booths are all semi-circular and BIG where you have to slide yourself all around or else you'd be far across the table from your partner. There's a bit of a 'leftover' zone that was a buffet of the prior restaurant occupant (I assume). Know what else I love? You order a soda, you get your own can with a nice glass of ice. I don't believe they serve any alcohol (yet?) but who cares. This is a foodie heaven. We've tried several items and plan to be back for more. Dan Dan was better than at other upscale Chinese, at a lower price and a huge portion. Chili oil wontons were amazing. Hot pot style meats are nice and tender. We ordered many dishes - 2 dumpling dishes, Peking duck, scallion pancake, dry pepper chicken, seafood noodle dish, fried rice, drinks. They were all great but the poor service left much to be desired. Our party felt cramped at a small table in a literally empty restaurant when we arrived at 6 on a Sunday. Constant requests for dish clearing or empty soda can removals to make space for dishes they were bringing out and essentials like extra napkins and water that weren't brought highlighted the staff's oversight. I was curious about whether Chinese food from Chengdu was any different from Szechuan or Cantonese and Yelpers 4.2 average rating made up my mind to try it. No water or noodles were put out and we didn't see our first waiter thereafter. The chicken soup dumplings were delivered first, after a long wait. We finished them in about five minutes and waited again, wondering why we didn't initially receive the jasmine tea or the tofu vegetable soup and how long that might take. One of us used the bathroom and snagged another waiter to ask about our order. Thereafter, the soup, our main courses and tea came out quickly. The jasmine tea was overcooked and full of unfiltered tea leaves. Instead of the mild orange tofu, the new waiter brought a hot spicy tofu. The broccoli served with all entrees was uncooked, and while both the chicken and sesame prawns were good, they were not exceptional, and we can't recommend the tofu vegetable soup either. I was craving Chinese food and Cheng Du didn't disappoint. The service was great, Nancy was very attentive and gave us good recommendations. I forgot the picture of the Dan Dan noodles which were excellent. Everything we had was really good, the dry pepper chicken had a lot of spice but still flavorful, the string beans were very good and the prawns were nicely seasoned. BLUF: Very good Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine. An easy recommendation for those in the area. We visited Cheng Du Chinese Cuisine (成都川菜) as part of an UYE (Unofficial Yelp Event) hosted by Andie E. The restaurant is billed as offering authentic ethnic cuisine in an area with few Chinese food options. Andie pre-selected nearly a dozen dishes from a very broad menu. I didn't try every dish. It was impossible to pace myself because every dish served was delicious in its own way, so I was stuffed before the final dish came out. Some notes: - Honey Walnut Prawns: Cheng Du's version encases a jumbo shrimp in a crispy shell, with pineapple bits and pineapple in the sauce. An unusual but one of the better interpretations that we've had. - Sliced Fatty Beef in Pickled Soup: salty, but the salt helped accentuate the sour flavors. These two dishes had a high level of heat balanced in such a way that other flavors were not drowned out. - Double-Cooked Pork Belly: soft and supple, cooked perfectly. - Cumin Beef These were well-executed standard interpretations (that is, for banquet hall-class Chinese restaurants): - Eggplant in Garlic Sauce - Fried String Beans with Minced Pork - Mapo Tofu Other: - The restrooms were chilly. - Shout-out to Mancie for great service. Cheng Du, how do you do! I had the pleasure to attend an "UYE" here tonight. (Unofficial Yelp Event) hosted by Andie. Thank you Andie for taking the time to organize the menu, get all the invites out and reconcile the bill at the end. It's been a while since I last attended a large group event. The joy of rekindling friendships old and new in person is refreshing and long overdue. Like I mentioned earlier, the Sichuan dishes were preselected by Andie and she did a most Excellent job in her 11 course selection, which she also printed out for each of us at the table to view and I highly recommend them as well. The dishes we had were: * Steamed vegetable dumplings * Sliced fatty beef in sour Pickle soup * Double cooked pork belly * Dry hot pot with lamb * Cumin beef * Honey walnut prawns * Mapo tofu with pork * Eggplant in garlic sauce * String beans with minced pork * Lychee and dragon eye fruit All the dishes were tasty and delicious, some I enjoyed more than others, there was not a bad dish in the bunch. The flavors and seasonings were on point as the spiciness level was a balanced heat. Many of us at my table did agree that most if not all the dishes were a tad too salty. I had to use the rice not only as a filler but also as a buffer for the salt. Other than water being free. The tea and soft drinks are not gratis. They have several hot teas that range from $2 up to $15 a pot. I can attest that a $15 pot of tea will be served in a fancy cast iron designer pot that can be doubled as a kettle bell. Our $2-3 oolong and jasmine teas were served in a typical stainless steel pot. Don't forget to check in on the Yelp app for a free scoop of ice cream. The parking lot in the rear is spacious, which makes for easy parking. The food here is Awesome as the staff is also friendly and attentive. A very enjoyable evening was had at Cheng Du, as Szechuan has been my cuisine of choice lately, and adding this spot to the docket is not a bad way to continue the trend. Family style is the name of the game and there were a ton of amazing dishes to choose from but there were a few standouts. The Honey Walnut Prawns were just a great surprise as the prawns were fried to perfection and in the most delicious honey mustard sauce. The sliced fatty beef in sour pickle soup was extremely flavorful but a little on the salty side. Szechuan string beans will always be a favorite. I don't know how or what they cook them with, but they are almost always out of this world. Also, most of the dishes were very spicy. Not in a bad way, that's just the name of the game for this style of cuisine. Not my usual format but I was able to hold my own. The spot itself is super cute and there is parking, which is a huge win for the area! The service was on point and the tables and restaurant itself was very well kept. They gave us 8" Plates...not the standard 10" or 11" Plates. 9. No dessert offered. Not even a Fortune Cookie or Pineapple. Again - This was a STAPLE in this place for YEARS. This place was WONDERFUL for YEARS. I think the competition (Jersey Mike's, Popeyes Taco Tony, plus 2 or 3 other eateries all opened in the past 3 years) has effectively killed this place. I can't understand why this place has such great ratings. I love soup dumplings and these were some of the worst. The dumplings were very thick and doughy and there was hardly any soup. The fried rice was good and the green beans were excellent. The cumin chicken was dry. The problem was the service. At one point we waited 42 minutes (I timed it) without seeing the server. The excuse was new ownership and learning new procedures. We were there for 2 and a half hours with only one course. As I was leaving I said to the couple coming in that they should leave now. I explained about the new management and the guy laughed. He said the service is always slow and they use that excuse all the time. Made an reservation here for a party of 10 thinking they had a private room for us. Instead it was just a blocked off part of the room next to the windows facing the parking lot. Sorry, that's not a private room for a party that you require a minimum of $300 that we spend. Service was horrible. Had an Indian girl who did not know how to organize our table with the onslaught of food that kept bombarding us. The kitchen did not know how to pace the food. She even had the audacity to ask us to "hurry up and eat" and to combine dishes together to make room. That's your job miss. Food, however was decent. I am disappointed in this one dish we got.
