Sandra's Next Generation has been my absolute staple in the community for over three decades…read more Sandra Pittman has been cooking in this same location since 1989, and I've been eating here consistently since 1995. It is, without question, the best soul food in the state. I have no problem running down I-91 from Hartford just to get my food because the quality and taste are on a level that nobody else can touch. Don't let the neighborhood fool you; this is a masterclass in authentic cooking. Sandra and her husband Miguel have been running this place for over 30 years, and that level of dedication shows in every single dish. The food has the kind of soul and precision that defines the elite dining scene in Connecticut. If you want the real deal--the standard that every other soul food spot is measured against--this is the only place to go. It's a class act that has stayed true to its roots for over 30 years.

I caught Metro North from Grand Central and after the 2+ hour ride that's when I found out that they had no seating, which that is my fault for not researching. I ordered online and waited a hour and 13 mins for my food. The service was great. The owner was very friendly as well as the other staff. As I was waiting the gospel music was playing and it was nice. Once I got my food. I immediately gave it a try because I didn't want it cold or reheated for my review. The soul food empanadas with chicken were pretty good I would give them a solid 7 out of 10. The smothered chicken was very salty in my opinion. I would rate it a 5 out of 10, and the Mac & cheese tasted like boxed velveeta which I would rate a 4/10. I'm disappointed at how over hyped it seem. Not pictured was my order of fried fish and it was bland with no seasoning. The lemon on the side did no justice. I could've honestly caught it at a bad time because it was a Sunday and very busy, but I'm definitely not interested in going back.

Came across this food truck when it was parked outside Counter Weight Brewing in Hamden. From the…read moreoutside we couldn't really tell what kind of food it was, as there was no menu. However, inside the brewery, every table had their menu. Our first round of ordering included maduros, tostones, and papitas. The tostones and papitas were very good, the fries were crisped nicely. And the chipotle sauce that went with the tostados was had a nice zing to it. Enjoying these, we ended up order a second round. We tried three empanadas (the cheeseburger, the Sweet Flame, and the Roasted Green) and the popcorn shrimp special. The Brussels sprouts in the Roasted Green empanada were delicious, cooked and flavored well; the Sweet Flame has cajun chicken, cheese, and mango habanero sauce. All the empanadas were filled greatly and not too doughy. The shrimp were cooked to a golden crisp with a very tasty sauce that tasted like a sweet chili glaze. Overall, enjoyable and would try again.

I purchased the Sausage, and Chicken empanadas with a side of the yucca fries. Spicy, flavorful, delicious! Love the sauces too, a chipotle mayo, and a mango sauce. The lady running they truck ( I WILL get her name next time!) was super sweet and a pleasure to talk to. I hear they are stationed by Tweed, but I hope they are at Counter Weight again! I will make sure to stop by.

Had to track down the waiter to inquire about our order and he said should be about 3 more minutes. Told him you have 5 minutes and then we're leaving. He came back and said we don't have sweet potatoes fries. Didn't anyone know this an hour ago. Finally my husband's fish platter came out and my two sides. His fish was good, chicken lukewarm. My sides were good. Disappointed there was no potato salad. Club soda was flat. At no point in our extended wait, did the waiter check in or offer drink refills. I only had water. Extremely disappointed in my experience tonight.

After a few minutes of reviewing rhe menu I ordered a dinner plate of 6 wings with sides of yams and mac and cheese. Paid for my order and ready to wait a bit for it to be put together, 5 mins later the person that took my order came out and told me no mac and cheese. I wasn't too happy about that because this was in the evening which means dinner is being served the least is that staff should know what's available to sell/serve. Well server went back to kitchen and came out and said sorry...mac and cheese will be available in 20 mins do you mind waiting. I really had my tummy set on it so I said sure I will wait. I leave for 20 plus minutes and come back the order is still not ready. Well I want too happy about that. Finally order is ready and I get my take out order and I leave. I would have thought for the extra waiting time I might have been offered maybe a piece of cornbread but no such luck. But I said all of that to say this...the dinner was absolutely FABULOUS!!! The chicken wings were fried to perfection, the mac and cheese was worth the wait and the yams made me wait to drive back to the restaurant and kiss the chef !!! The food was worth it !!! Besides the wait and not being offered or given anything for the wait I have to say TRY THIS PLACE OUT THE FOOD IS SO WORTH IT !!! OH MY GOODNESS...everything was good...but them YAMS !!! I definitely recommend and will be back !!
