I would give this place zero stars if I could. We used this school for our twins. When it came to the actual driving hours they both had the same instructor for all of their hours. This man did not teach them what they needed to know. And what he did teach, he taught incorrectly. We have spent thousands of dollars at this school for both kids and now I am trying to find a new school where they will get a driving instructor who will actually teach them what they need to know. Maybe we would have had a different experience if we got a different instructor, but for the amount of money you spend, it should not be left up to chance. I have had great experience with this school. The staff is so accommodating and have gone out of their way, multiple times, for me and my kids. Each stage (the drivers education course, practice tests, parent classes, online portal, drivers test and calling the office with questions) that we went through, the staff went out of their way to be knowledgeable, professional and kind. I was horrible at trying to teach my kids to drive. Each time, I got int he car with them I had clenched hands and was a nervous wreck. It takes someone special to teach a kid to drive. I am grateful that there was a place that my kids could learn to drive correctly! Lastly, my daughter was a wreck prior to taking her test. She was a bundle of nerves and lacked confidence in her abilities. Her instructor, Marty, took the time to give her an amazing pep talk a few days prior to taking her test. He built up her confidence and she said she remembered his words when she was behind the wheel and she passed! Thank you Marty. I would highly recommend them. read more

My son really enjoyed learning how to drive with the Chelmsford Auto School. After my son attended his week of classroom instruction with Dale, he went to the RMV and immediately passed his written test to get his permit. My son felt that they did a great job preparing him to take his written test. We then had him complete his behind the wheel training. My son found the instruction very helpful and was excited to learn to drive with each session he had. They offer an online portal which is very helpful to scheduling the classes and behind the wheel lessons at your convenience. I would highly recommend sending your son or daughter to this school. read more

I am fed up with this school. My son wanted to get his driver's license almost 2 months ago but due to this company still not responding to my repeated phone calls and emails he cannot. I am not even sure if they are still in business! Tewksbury Memorial High School is sponsoring this company to provide driver's ed to their students. What a mistake! I have been in contact with the school administration who has sent emails to this school on my behalf and STILL Chelmsford Auto hasn't called me! After calling for over 3 weeks, I finally got a road test scheduled for Dec 3rd. The school told me call the RMV to pay and set up the road test, etc. But after almost 3 weeks, the school has yet to even register my son's drivers ed certificate with the RMV so I can't even start the RMV process! When I called the school, they said oh yeah, by the way all the road tests for Dec 3rd have been moved up to the next Sat. And WHEN were they going to call me and tell me that??? I have already reported them to the BBB. And guess what? The BBB said that the school did not respond to my complaint. No surprise there. My next move is to show up on thier door step and demand that they give me my son's certificate so we can finish this process on our own. If that doesn't work I will call "Call For Action"-maybe they can help. read more

I'm a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to driving. This is because I grew up in the New York City suburbs and lived within walking distance to a train station. I always learned to rely on others for rides, so I didn't bother to get my license when I was a teenager. Before I moved to MA, I knew that a driver's license might come in handy someday, so I might as well get it while I was still living with my parents. So there I went, taking driving lessons and earning my license before heading out of state. Then came the day, several years after living in MA and learning to walk everywhere, that I did need that license. I called Chelmsford Auto School and set up a refresher driving lesson. My instructor was John, who was no nonsense. He definitely had a tough love style, which is something that I can appreciate, and told it like it was. But he remained respectful and kept me on course, literally. I did see his style with a teenage girl; he was definitely softer and was relating to her more in a very nice way. I was incredibly pleased with our work together during my first lesson that I signed up for a second one and requested John. By the end of the second lesson, I was a great deal more comfortable practicing some typical runs, as I started to learn the area. He did a great job of slaying my fears and ensuring that I was feeling better about what I was doing. Since then, I've driven quite a bit and I'm grateful for the reasonable lessons ($80 per 90 minutes) that got me back on the road. They definitely have the lowest prices around and my instructor was patient, cool, and knew exactly how to adapt to my needs. read more

He was always calm through all my lessons and made me comfortable on the wheel. DO NOT GO HERE! If I could give 0 stars, I would. Worst customer service experience I ever had in my life. These people are scammers and insanely rude! When I booked my driving test for $120, it would be for lesson and that the school would drive me to the dmv. They didn't do either of that. The test was in the school parking lot, which they are not authorized to do. I got failed before I even started driving, over hand signals. I got 2/3 right. The instructor LAUGHED at me, when I started to cry. When I defended myself, by saying he wasn't fair. He started to SCREAM at me. I complained to staff. They said the test and the instructor's behavior was out of their hand. I complained that my test was not fair, since I didn't get a fair chance or the service I paid for, that I wanted my money back. They began to yell at me. I defended myself, saying again, I just want my money back. They began to yell at me more and threatened to call the cops. Called me "nuts", lol. I said "go ahead". I wasn't doing anything illegal, they were by scamming me and doing unauthorized tests. read more

It is the most unprofessional school ever! NOT only do they not show up without notice, but also do not receive calls or return them. Also, not once have I seen a single student pass on any of the days I was there for a road test. I believe they have some sort of business model where they deliberately fail students and make $100 off each attempt. They take advantage of people who live by themselves and have no sponsor apart from the school for a road test. They fail them at least 3-4 times to make money off every road test and the classes. Additionally, you would expect if you are taking classes from them, they would make you aware of the common mistakes that one does on the road test but they don't and you end up making some stupid mistake, that you cant argue over. On the test, everybody generally drives well but it is the tiny ignorable mistakes that may cause you to fail . Sadly, they don't allow even a single mistake (as if anyone who does pass is a driving purist), which I find is odd else most people would have ended up with no license. I personally was once given a reason (should have looked twice on the right before making a right turn) which didn't quite make sense. OVERALL, VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE!!! Bottom line is in a small town like Chelmsford, with a huge customer pool, their business won't be affected by bad reviews but parents, if you can take your kids to other schools, please do and save them from getting their confidence broken. My son completed his required drivers education with Chelmsford Auto School. I agree with the other posters, this is truly an unprofessional establishment. They are happy to take your money but seem to be unable to deliver their promises. My main issues are as follows: My son had to complete his observation hours. I paid for them. They picked him up at the school and brought him home 15 MINUTES later. Wink, wink, he has completed his required observation hours. On Friday, May 25th, I called the school because they had not completed his certification with the registry which must be done to schedule a road test. I had paid the "certificate charge" on May 10th, so a full two weeks later and nothing. When I called on the 25th, the woman who answers the phone (but apparently can't do anything else) informed me that "the registry sucks" and Kevin works for the Chelmsford Police Department. I was not impressed. If Kevin, who is the only one allowed to use the company credit card to pay for the drivers ed certificates, cannot fulfill the requirements of his job at Chelmsford Auto, he should concentrate on one profession. Bottom line: there are dozens of driving schools in the Merrimack Valley. Do yourself a favor and use anyone but Chelmsford Auto School. read more

I hear a lot of complaints from Tewksbury High School kids and I witnessed the poor customer service first-hand today. First, they won't answer the phone forcing you to leave a message or hang up. When you leave a message, you will not get a response. They direct you to go to their website that is currently down. So it is clearly a nightmare in the making. The road test lesson is not helpful at all. The instructor said I am comfortable to drive and OK to take a test. The road test rescheduled without any notification. I called several times to know that the test is rescheduled. The examiner they hire is so strict. He said I was driving too slow and no look and failed me! I did look at every direction when I needed to. Save your money to something else. read more

I would not recommend anyone take driving test here. I took my daughter for driving test at Chelmsford Auto school and she was deliberately failed. Upon asking reason one of instructor/examiner told us - 1. There is no doubt in driving skills of your daughter she is driving absolutely fine and perfect 2. It just that examiner felt that she was driving little fast, immediately i inquired was it over speed limit thing? to which he told no speed or over speeding thing. 3. I asked if she was not speeding and way within speed limits then how is it that she drove vehicle fast according to you to which he responded - New drivers should be driving very slow. 4. Examiner told that your daughter saw other vehicle approaching at intersection but she drove vehicle. Your daughter was already stopped and at halt situation prior to this oncoming vehicle, But she should have allowed other vehicle to pass first which was distance away. Road test Examiners are really missing something known as right of way at street intersection. Whoever is first and halted has right to go first, while oncoming vehicle should stop at intersection wait for their turn. Our request were turned down and they defended their decision by it's all glory about safety first and failed my daughter despite doing road test and everything that was asked to do on road test. Please avoid this location for taking test as it's not about driving skills and ability at all. Its all about perception of examiner whether they like your driving as per their choice irrespective of road condition, right of way or traffic condition. I was not fortunate to dream that this examiner love to see vehicle moving at speed of 5 to 10 MPH in traffic condition. He thinks vehicle at 20 MPH is moving fast enough on the road of 25 MPH while there are other vehicles behind. BTW I was surprised and was thinking why examiner asked to book for next road test after failing my daughter, I feel they're failing on purpose for to get double road test schedules or maybe student that take retest may be criteria of passing. read more

So far, I am pleased with Chelmsford Auto School. My 16 year old daughter took the classroom portion and passed the permit test easily without additional studying or prep. She really liked the classroom teacher (Ron). I attended the parent class, also with Ron, which was pretty good. Huge plus - Chelmsford Auto offers Saturday driving license tests for $75, which I will be taking advantage of. A much better plan than waiting 7-8 weeks to schedule during a weekday with the RMV. Update: She has started driving lessons. She was terrified to drive at first, and they were extremely accommodating first allowing her to just ride along with another student to see how it works and then essentially giving her a private lesson with her classroom instructor for her first time driving. She still has Ron as her driving instructor and he is great with young, inexperienced drivers. She loves driving now and actually wants to go to lessons and drive with me. A complete turnaround. I love this place. I have no issues scheduling her lessons and the office staff is very helpful. Highly recommended. read more

Absolutely horrible. The worst customer service I have ever experienced. Constantly being bumped on the schedule and no one answers the phone or ever returns your calls. I loved sitting in the office waiting for my daughter's driving test and watching the office person sitting at the desk letting all calls go to voicemail while he played with his phone. Also, parents having to come in to the office to schedule lessons for their kids because they had no return phone calls to the many messages they left. This school is an absolute rip off. I have seen some older negative reviews of the school and the school has had some changes in how it is run and all for the better. I had a child go about 11 years ago and had no major issues other than it was rare to get someone on the phone the first try. I now have another kid in the program and have been very impressed. They are great about picking up when you call, even if they are on the other line, they pick up to ask if you can hold. I usually speak with Kevin and he has been great. Kaitlin (spelling?) has also been very helpful. No problems scheduling the drives and having drivers show up punctually either at school or at home. They even almost made my son miss his license test because they are so unprofessional and would not send my parent class completion letter to the new school. I would not tell anyone to go here. My son came close to missing his license test because they refused to send us the parent class letter. Something that can be sent no more than 5 minutes, took us almost a month to receive and I needed to go down there myself to get it. Terrible customer service if you ask me.
