I am not much for regular stretching and certainly not yoga. So my visit to The Co Pilates was the first pilates experience I ever had, and it was a mind-altering experience. The studio space is immaculate and peaceful (quite a feat as it is smack in the middle of Union Square), and Brittany embodies this as well with her calm, professional, insightful and encouraging demeanor. I went to the Co because I had hurt my shoulder training for an obstacle course race, and I told Brittany that my goal was simply to understand and fix what was going on in that part of my body. Of course knowing better than myself, Brittany performed a complete review of essentially how I carry and use my body. It amazed me when she asked me why when I moved one part of my body one way, a different part of my body would move in a different direction. It only took me a few seconds to realize "OMG that's because of the posture I use when I do a particular task at work!" When I went back to work I immediately corrected that issue and have found that in the weeks since then my body frame has felt generally better overall! Amazing! Plus, during the session, Brittany had me stretch and move my body in ways that I had never stretched or moved it before. And after the fact (in the days following) much of that felt good too! Brittany gave me detailed instructions on exercises to perform at home to stretch and strengthen my shoulder. Moreover, she delivered these in exactly the format that given my learning style, would best help me execute them correctly. Before visiting Brittany I had not been doing much to fix my injury as I was resting it because it was not long before a weekend "sports camping" getaway where I was going to do a lot of activity. Although I didn't "do my homework" as directed leading up to the weekend, during my trip I participated fully in all kinds of sports--including "slip and slide kickball" where I repeatedly dove on the ground and didn't make any efforts to "protect" my shoulder. And after all that, I felt fine! This made the lightbulb go on in my head and gave me even more faith in the overriding philosophy of The Co Pilates: "Movement is the best medicine!" read more

I had been struggling with a shoulder injury for over three years. I tried *everything* and nothing helped. Then I met Brittany and The Co Pilates. Britanny has an uncanny way of reading one's body. She immediately focused in on the problem areas, and we began the work of monthly relearning. Before Brittany, I was in a lot of pain getting dressed, lifting even the lightest items and had little and very painful mobility. I didn't sleep well because of ongoing pain. Britany taught me how to move correctly, how to maintain healthy mobility through movement, how to improve my posture and strengthen my core. I even got "homework." Through this amazing instruction and learning experience, I have a huge chunk of my quality of life back. As an athlete and dancer, Brittany understands how the human body works. She also admits to watching medical videos to see what the inside of joints look like and how they work. All that knowledge and experience comes through in her teaching. I had never tried pilates before and really had no idea what to expect. Prior to The Co Pilates, Brittany had been my personal trainer, training me out of my building's gym. To say didn't completely change my life then is an understatement - with Brittany's coaching and support, I lost 70lbs over the course of a year and a half. Fast forward a few years later and here I was trying pilates with her for the first time. While recognizing similarities in how she previously taught me about core strength and muscle positioning, it was an entirely new endeavor for me. Brittany is ever the constant professional. I am a professional dancer and have had a chronic hip problem that ranges from uncomfortable to really painful, it often shifts my SI joint causing back tension too.  I went to see Brittany during one of the painful stints in February and I was blown away by how much progress we made in one session!  Brittany was able to help me identify and activate all the muscles in my legs that were weak because of my imbalance. My chiropractor referred me to Brittany at Co Pilates. What a find!! Although I have not worked with Brittany personally, I have worked with other wonderful instructors. I started Pilates to strengthen after herniating a few lumbar discs. The workouts never caused me discomfort and I've continued to gain core strength and flexibility. I recently took a private Pilates lesson while on vacation. The instructor commented that "whoever is teaching you is doing a terrific job!" Brittany is a wonderful teacher. She listens, understands and makes our session an integral part in accomplishing my overall goals. Our workouts are what I asked for - restorative but also strenuous. I feel stronger, balanced and well taken care of working with Brittany. She knows how when I need her demonstrate, and uses great verbal cues to help me work deeper. And she is smart and funny. The studio is so convenient, Union Square, and bright. Unlike many studios I've been to, it is quiet even when others are there as well. Brittany is the best! A lower back injury had left me barely mobile. She showed me a series of exercises, and new breathing techniques, and got me moving again safely, and without pain! She showed me the ways I had been moving that were leading to injury, and new, better, safer ways to move in order to prevent injury and move better. I am amazed at her intuition and skill, she was able to pinpoint problem areas I couldn't describe, and teach me in a way that made sense to ME, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach I have found elsewhere.
