I chose this company after reading the many positive reviews but had a very different experience. Maybe the positive reviews are for direct moves (which mitigates the issues I experienced) but moving+storage was not pleasant. 1. Make sure to number your boxes (they don't, so you should). I have several missing items from my old kitchen area (thankfully not hugely valuable but presumably in the same missing box). 2. They are quick/efficient but do not pack with much care. The focus is very much on speed and items can get mixed/damaged. 3. If you are missing boxes or have broken items, the waiver they make you sign limits liability to something like 30 cents / pound. I was offered a minimal amount which I did not accept. 4. They charge by the hour, which can lead to unexpected overcharges. If there's traffic, you will get charged for any additional time on the road. If they arrive early and are done packing early but your building refuses to let you use the elevator before your reservation time starts, you will be charged for the waiting around. 5. Speaking of time, charges also include "time spent getting to storage" or "time spent leaving from storage" - the problem is you can never know exactly when those times start/stop. You are charged for time spent outside of when you actually see them working, which means you just have to take their word for it. 6. On move-in day, they arrived an hour late (apparently due to traffic, which I was charged for). They did not bother letting me know they were running late until I called them 30 minutes past the scheduled arrival time. 7. Be careful to check everything in real time as they move stuff in and stay on top of it. Moving is hectic and they will ask you to sign saying everything is complete - which you will because if you take your time to check through things, again, you will be charged for the extra time. In my case, I only saw after they left that they had left a piece of furniture unassembled (presumably because leg pieces were missing due to overuse in other parts when they misassembled another piece of furniture - nobody thought to flag for me before asking me to sign). Again, surprised at the vastly different experience compared to other reviews, which seem fine. I would not use again. read more

Recently moved from Hudson Yards to Harlem and was referred to Chelsea Movers by a friend. Let me note that I moved from a 5th floor walk up to a 4th floor walk up (hence why I was not about to do it myself). Three movers arrived 5 minutes early. It was 5 degrees out that day and windy... HUGE kudos to these guys. They moved my furniture, crates and bags without a scratch and very quickly. The price was extremely fair (even with a tip I added). I highly recommend to anyone in NYC! I had a small move and used Chelsea moving to move a few suitcases, small furniture and my peloton bike (which was the primary reason I used movers at all). I have moved many times in Manhattan and typically use other movers but chose Chelsea because they had told us it was $125/hour and could avoid many of the absurd minimums other companies have. For such a small move, we thought this was the best deal we could find. However, I am giving 3 stars because of the following: 1) We were mislead on the pricing. We proactively got quotes throughout the city and the contact told us it was $125/hour and expected it would take no more than 2 hours. When the movers came, they took inventory of the items and loaded them onto the truck. AFTER they finished loading the items, they then asked us if we knew it was a 3 hour minimum and to call the company. We called the company and of course, their tune had now changed. Our furniture was on the truck so we paid what we had to but am disappointed in the misleading and dishonest nature they conduct business . 2) We had to sign a form indicating if they received a parking ticket, we were responsible for it. Additionally, we paid $30/building for the COI's which took over a week to receive. This added stress to the coordination of the move as buildings will not hold their elevator schedule for you until they have the COI. I have moved 4+ times and I have never had to pay for the COI or was responsible for any parking tickets. 3) Chelsea does not treat furniture with the same care as other moving companies. In all my other experiences, movers will wrap furniture with a blanket or bubble wrap to ensure your furniture is not damaged. Since I primarily wanted professional movers for my bike, I was uncomfortable seeing the lack of care for such an expensive piece of furniture. Movers were friendly and efficient but I would definitely not use Chelsea again. Dumbo moving has a low minimum with none of these extra caveats or hidden fees so would recommend them. read more

Very easy to work with yet very professional. From the first call with Naomi through unloading the final few items, they made things a breeze. I'll be using them again. Pros: -Prompt (arrived exactly at the stated time) -Quick (we were finished about 40 minutes ahead of schedule) -Had no problem with non-standard items (end tables, shelves, etc.) -All items well-wrapped so everything kept in perfect condition -Quickly provided a last minute COI request that my building asked for -Hauled away some extra items cheap -Worked around me packing some final few items because why would I ever have everything done in advance? Cons: -They'll charge you for non-reusable materials involved in packing (e.g., tape, wrapping, mattress cover) so you can either do some of this yourself or pay their prices, which are reasonable but still can add up -Got a parking ticket while loading the truck which I was then on the hook for. The guy was in the truck yet they still gave the ticket. Sucked All in all, it was a great move at a very reasonable price. read more

DON'T GO NEAR CHELSEA MOVING! DON'T GO NEAR THESE ASSHOLES! THEY WILL CHARGE YOU TWO OR THREE TIMES WHAT THEY QUOTE, AND THEY NEVER TELL YOU IN ADVANCE THAT THEY ARE GOING TO CHARGE YOU THIS! Not to the very end when the whole move is totally done then they pack on all these extra extra charges that they have never never told you about! They quoted $190 an hour but it only took 2 hours and they charged me for 3 hours because they said that was their minimum hours but I was never told that. So that's $180 extra! Arrived at 7:00a.m. instead of 7:30a.m. as they were supposed to. And expected me to pay that extra 30 minutes that would be another $90. Then tell me if they got to the new apartment building, before 9:00 and the building would not let them in, we would have to wait one whole hour that would be another $180. Then they said they were going to add on another 30 minutes for $90, for them to drive back to the office! WHAT INCREDIBLE STUPIDITY IS THAT! They're not even working for me anymore and they won't meet to pay another $90 for them to drive back to the office! I never was told about any extra charges for packing materials, I didn't have any furniture or anything to pack. They did not pack one box or anything else whatsoever, not one box whatsoever! That added another $32 to the bill. Was never told that if they get a parking ticket I would have to pay that. Which would have been about another $135. I went into the office FOUR times, FOUR times -- TO GET THIS WORKED OUT CORRECTLY !! The Moving Manager was very arrogant, paid no attention to anything I said. That I didn't know about any of these charges that were here now that I'm ready to pay the bill and the moving is totally over. The moving manager acted like he never had any conversations with the office manager about any of these issues whatsoever no matter how many times I mentioned it - and didn't give a crap !! So the whole bill went from $360, to $707, a double increase of $347! THESE ARE THE SAME EXACT COMPLAINTS YOU WILL SEE ABOUT THEM ON YELP BESIDES ME !! DON'T GO NEAR THESE ASSHOLES! read more

I have used Chelsea Moving for four different moves, in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, and every occasion has been as pleasant as a moving experience could possibly be. From scheduling and organizing insurance requests with Roxanne or Naomi to the actual move date itself, everyone is professional and polite. I've never had anything arrive broken, or not arrive at all. The guys are fast, always on time, and take great care of my belongings. I even used their storage when I lived abroad for four years, and they moved my stuff to the storage space when I left and back out when I returned. These guys dont even deserve 1 star as far as customer service goes. I am moving a small amount of stuff 2 blocks (a bed and a sofa) and about 10 boxes and was quoted a 3 hours (which was fine) I asked if 2 hours was an option since it was so close and both were elevator buildings and Alex (the owner) decided to say he didn't want my business and hung up the phone mid-quote. I'm really glad I didn't work with this company because I couldn't imagine having to deal with this sort of inferior service if something went wrong. Having operated within the moving and storage industry in NYC for the past 30 years I found myself needing the services of a reliable mover at the end of June. I had just purchased a new home so the move date was was suddenly upon me. I've known Chelsea Movers for over 30 years and reached out in the hope they could help me with this last minute move. I can honestly say that Naomi was fantastic setting up my move and accommodating me and the crew were by far the best moving crew I have seen operate in my time in the moving industry. They were all super friendly, willing to ensure that the job was completed within the estimate, extremely careful with everything I brought from my 3 bed apt and even dismantled and reconfigured my large walk in closet at my new home. Many movers will offer peace of mind during the move but these guys were extra special. On time, efficient, never a complaint, always smiling and eager to get the job done and done well. Guy goes to the wrong address, calls me, then when I correct him on the address he curses and hangs up. Don't go with this company unless you are totally desperate AND are willing to get jacked on the fees. I used them for both moving and storage at the end of July (the move) and November (the move-in). The quote they provided me did not include a $25 fee for the COI or any disclosure that the $115/hr for 3 men included a 3-hour minimum. When they moved me in, they showed up 15 minutes before my building closed and then attempted to charge me for gas, tolls and other extras after I had laid down and picked up my own masonite. The lead guy, Victor, even had the gall to ask me to help him unwrap my stuff and take the packing tape off the blankets. If you use them, get everything in writing and ask for pricing on everything. They were always been on time (if not a bit earlier), and all the guys worked really hard without anyone slacking off. My roommate was moving back home to Philly and I was moving out of our apt in brooklyn into a friend's apt in manhattan. Hearing nightmare stories about moving companies with things being broken, lost etc I felt abit overwhelmed having to use movers but there was no way to move on my own. My roommate's co-worker had recommended this company because they had done a job for their offices last year and said how reliable and trustworthy they were especially they have been in business for so long and they do jobs out of state so we would both be able to move with the same company. we had called them to see if they could come give us an estimate and maybe some pointers as we are pretty much newbies to using a company to move. a man came to see how much stuff we had and gave both of us an estimate for the time and cost for my roommate's stuff to go to philly and for my things to go to manhattan. My roommate wanted the movers to pretty much pack all her things, but I preferred to do my own packing to save abit of money, he was nice enough to explain what kind of boxes I should use and some tips on packing certain things to prevent anything from breaking. The next day we were emailed our estimates that thoroughly explained the costs of the jobs and roughly how long it would take. My roommate managed to move to Philly without a hitch and all of her stuff was safe and sound, my anxiety was abit at ease to hear this. 2 days before it was my turn to move out of our apt I found out I wouldnt be able to move into my friend's place until the next week but I had to be out of my bk apt as my landlord really could care less. I called up donovan who was the guy who gave me the estimate because i honestly had no idea what I was going to do. I couldnt give enough praise to this company and for him for their help. They allowed me to move into their storage free of charge for the week, i would just have to pay for the time it takes them to move the stuff into and out of their storage place, im sure most places probably would have charged me a whole month just to keep my stuff there for 5 days but Chelsea Moving didnt! we really picked the right movers for the job and I definitely recommend them to anyone moving as im thankful they were recommended to us otherwise who knows what a nightmare it could have been. Estimate was cheaper than either of the other two companies I considered. Seven men showed up and moved, wrapped and organized like a smooth military operation. All guys nice, even when our dog almost bit one. Not a single problem, and they are strong. Picking up air conditioners, moving heavy furniture, really impressive strength! And fast. And even though it was a big move, the estimate stayed where it was--no extra costs. A few weeks later I called about something else and they were incredibly helpful and reasonable. We used Chelsea Moving & Storage for our move this past weekend. We got 3 quotes before deciding to go with Chelsea Moving. Their estimate was a few hundred dollars under Flatrate. Schleppers was twice the price! They were the only mover who agreed to take out our A/Cs. Their estimate was based on an hourly rate, whereas the other two companies based it on an estimation of boxes. Donovan, who did the estimate, was extremely professional and quick. When I booked the move, I dealt with Naomi, who was extremely helpful. They did not require any credit card or deposit up front. They arrived on time and worked very hard on a very hot day. They were careful with our things. At the end of the move, the bill was $400 under the estimate! It was much cheaper than I expected! I highly recommend them. The only thing that was not a problem for us, but might be for others is you must pay in at least 50% cash. read more

Only once did something break, it was a chair, and the cost of the repair was technically outside the scope of my insurance coverage. Ok we were moving from NYC to Norwalk CT. We packed up...the movers came, they packed up and then we left our home at 10:45 and arrrived in Norwalk at 12PM. They (the truck) arrived at 2PM, taking three hours to drive from NYC to CT. OK..I thought..... I think I will call and ask why it takes that long...spoke with Naomi and she said she would call the driver. When he arrived in the apartment, name unknown, he started to cross examine me about his actions and angrily explained why "he would never extend a job" and this, that and the other thing--and how I basically had besmirched his character. I politely said that "sir, there is a nicer way to handle this, and that would be to simply explain to me the route and why a 28 foot truck cannot travel the way a passenger car can." OR, something to that effect. Like, um.....you know, in an explanatory, non accusatory way. He was so offended and angry that it left a bad taste in my mouth. Later, to his credit, he did subtract one hour off the move, but the damage was done. LEARN how to talk to people. LEARN how to explain BEFORE you leave so that the person who wants to know details is NOT put on the defensive. YOU chose this profession, so deal with it...there are going to be people who question you, so deal with it. I know that nothing I said caused this guy to go off on me the way he did.....it was all him. Seriously. On another good note, all of my stuff arrived, and nothing was damaged. read more

LOOK NO MORE! Chelsea Moving & Storage saved me when another moving company bailed on me 1 hour before my scheduled move. I called Chelsea Moving & Storage and spoke to Naomi. She was so nice on the phone and had movers at my doorstep within 2 hours of our call. Victor and his crew got to my apt at 2pm, loaded up the truck and drove to my new place. All of my stuff was unloaded and in my new apt by 345pm. It only took them 1 hour and 45 minutes to do the whole move! I would recommend Chelsea Moving & Storage to everyone. My experience with Chelsea Moving and Storage was flawless. I moved within Manhattan on October 16, 2009. The team was there on time, was very friendly, seemed to be very experienced, and completed the job fast within the expected time. Absolutely no damage was done. They charged me exactly what was agreed before. Although this should be normal, it is not in Manhattan. [At my last move with a different company (Apollo Van Lines), they wanted to charge me extra for "crating" of furniture, although they had already charged for the packing material and time that they used to crate these items. Apollo Van Lines would not want to unload the truck until I pay these ridiculous premiums (cash only!)] Chelsea Moving and Storage also accepts credit cards, which I consider a requirement. I will definitely contact Chelsea Moving and Storage for my next move. read more
