I live in Louisville, but work in Lagrange. Chen is the go-to lunch spot for me and my coworkers. We used to go on Wednesdays, so we called that day Chensday. The food is never a let down, is very reasonable, and if you go even once a month the lady remembers exactly what you get. First time was Monday 4/4/2016. I ordered the chicken lo mien with rice and an egg roll. Very impressed. My wait time was minimal and the food was delicious. The portions were enough for dinner for 2 days. It tasted just as delicious reheated. I'll be back! read more

Since we live in Oldham County my wife and I decided to try a different Chinese restaurant from where we usually dine. We had never been to Chen Garden and based on it's Yelp rating decided to give it a try. Chen Garden is very small (3 tables) and is mainly a carry out business. My wife ordered a small Chicken Lo Mein and some fried dumplings. Her portions were good sized but the food was plain and didn't have much flavor according to her. I ordered Hot & Sour soup, Twice Cooked Pork and Crab Rangoon. I am a huge fan of Hot & Sour soup but this was very bland. It was possibly the worst that I have ever had. The Twice Cooked Pork and Crab Rangoon was better. Neither were anything to write home about but they were passable. So you live and you learn. We won't be going back to Chen Garden. read more

I don't know how good the food is because we were never served. They have three tables. Two were occupied, one dirty. When my husband, our daughter, and I walked in, we walked up to the counter and stood there for five minutes while the cashier went in and out of the kitchen several times. After a few minutes, she said, "one minute," and a few minutes after that, she washed the dirty table. We took this as an invitation to sit down and immediately went over to the table, where we sat for 15+ minutes without a word being said to us. The cashier and another employee who was answering the phone walked in and out several times, and didn't so much as glance at us. There are THREE tables here, all within twenty feet of the counter. Here's no way they didn't notice us. Four or five people came in to pick up carryout orders in the 20-25 minutes we were there. That doesn't seem busy enough to justify ignoring three out of the seven customers sitting down. At this point we decided to leave, started to pick up our stuff and push back our seats, and the cashier called over to us from the counter, "Do you want to order now or later?" My husband said, "We're ready now." To which she replied, "You order here," then immediately walked back into the kitchen. Needless to say, we got up and walked out. Lack of any service whatsoever combined with a snarky attitude is not a good business model. In the first 25 minutes that we were there, the only thing we heard from an employee was "one minute." I'm not an impatient person; I have happily sat for 30+ minutes waiting to order and be served many times. But I expect some communication during that time, at least more than two words. read more

This place opened recently in La Grange. It's right next to the Save-a-lot on Hwy 53. You can watch the cooks prepare your meal which is pretty cool. Every thing is cooked to order, unlike the Chinese buffets in the area. The pork egg rolls, crap rangoon, and General's chicken were all good. The egg drop soup and Garlic Chicken were so-so. The price was very reasonable and lunches are only $4.50! I'm definitely going back for the lunch specials. read more

I went in to order a take out. It was my first time to go there and did not really know how to go about it. The girl behind the counter was so bored and could not even greet the customers. I helped myself to the menu since she did not offer it. She then stood up and did not even look at me, so I greeted her with a jolly, "Good morning and a How are you?" She still did not look at me though I smiled at her. She mumbled a response and asked for my order. I gave her some bills and some change. It took a few seconds to get my change out. She showed her impatience though there was no one else in the place. What is with this place? If you guys are happy to deal with unsmiling and surly people, I sure am not. I ordered a pork lo mein. The cook called out my order and as I went to pick it up from the counter, she pointed with her chin where the plastic forks were and the sauces. I helped myself to the sauces and took my plastic fork and spoon and a napkin. The food was salty and the though tasty, the saltiness was not one I had anticipated. In any event, it will be my first and last visit there. Smiles are free ....share it and let it go a long way.... read more

I don't order Chinese takeout very often but when I do, it's generally because I'm craving some reliable, comfort Chinese food. This is the first Chinese restaurant I've tried since moving to this area. The process of ordering and picking up the food went smoothly but the actual food turned out differently than I was expecting. My go-to order from Chinese places is the sesame chicken combo, so that's what I ordered this time. First of all, the fried rice was solid and the egg roll and sweet and sour sauce were actually really good! The problem was the main dish in my meal; the seasame chicken. I was expecting the usual sweet and tangy flavor I've received from other places but instead, this sesame chicken seemed to have a strange tomato flavor to it. Basically it wasn't the taste I was expecting and I wasn't happy with the flavor change. Also, I tried some of their crab rangoon and was disappointed. There was very little cream cheese mixture in each rangoon (and what was there wasn't that tasty) and so they consisted mostly of the hard, bread-like material. In the end, I may order from Chen Garden in the future but I'll probably try other Chinese restaurants first for comparison. read more
