This townie Chinese restaurant has a big local following. This place is a total dive that caters to people who grew up on the Americanized Chinese slop we are all too familiar with. While the food is definitely above average in the slop department, it fails on so many other levels. For example, you are not getting the highest quality. On one visit, my beef teriyaki and spare ribs were chewy. That means the food was either frozen previously, or we were given old food that was reheated. It's possible they did not marinate the meat long enough or tenderize it, but that's just plan laziness and incompetence so they can keep production moving fast. Presentation was beautiful, got to give them that. It's a tiny location, with people crowding the non-existent waiting area to be seated or to pick up take out. If you dine in during the winter, be prepared to be very cold. The emergency side door is constantly being opened as people enter the side entrance to pick up take out food. You always get a whoosh of cold air and people in hats and sweatpants walk through the restaurant to pick up their food. Once it starts to get warm again, another person comes in to pick up their food and the whole process starts all over again, low class. The bar is always filled with locals who just go to drink to excess and eat crab rangoons, egg rolls and chicken wings, lol. And these locals are very loyal and protective of their beloved Cheng Du. The current manager and family member of the Cheng Du restaurant dynasty is just an incredibly rude and unfriendly woman who makes you feel unwelcome and a bother. This is behavior of a restaurant that apparently has so much business and loyal customers that they can get away with being unprofessional, I guess? The waitstaff are nice people, but they are crass, speak terrible English and behave like food runners, not waiters. You will not have a good dine in experience. For example, one time I was there, the waitress said to me "What you want?" This was before coming to the table and introducing herself or asking if I would like a drink first. I've been to China, and have eaten from street vendors and in nice restaurants. When I observe the manager and waitstaff, I think: Street Vendor, lol. They would be better suited selling fish balls in Shanghai, not running a nice restaurant in America. Don't be fooled, this is not a nice restaurant. The prices are incredibly high as well. The on-line menu has an option to choose lunch or dinner. They have no lunch specials or lunch prices/portions. When did this happen? So lunch and dinner are the same price and same portions, comical. I guess they get alot of fat customers. A main course if you choose a familiar dish such as General Gau's Chicken is $20 and this does not include rice. You must pay an additional $5 for rice, which makes your meal cost $25. Crispy Orange Beef is $22, so with rice you are paying $27. They are also open 7 days a week, which means they are greedy and work their staff to the bone. Speaking of staff, I peeked into the kitchen once and the cooks are not even Chinese. The young people who work the front of the house are not Chinese either so it's clear it's assimilating. Skip this place. You know a place is good when your favorite local Chinese restaurant always has some Chinese people dining or picking up takeout. Chinese people don't even come here or want to work here. The menu is all in English as well. Good Chinese restaurants have the Chinese description below the English one. This place is an absolute disgrace. They should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves. But people keep coming, some people never learn. read more

May remembers us by name and always takes a moment to check in, asking how we're doing and making us feel like VIPs. It's rare to find that level of personal care in a restaurant, and it's a big part of what keeps us coming back. As for the food, it's always spot-on. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection. The chicken fingers were crispy and golden, exactly as I requested. The shrimp fried rice had just the right amount of spice, fulfilling my craving for heat without going overboard. At Cheng Du, you never have to worry about not getting your meal just the way you want it, especially if you're lucky enough to have May taking care of you. Her attention to detail and genuine interest in making sure everything is perfect for each guest is what truly elevates the experience. It's the complete triple threat: great food, outstanding service, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, Cheng Du is a must-visit. I frequented this restaurant for a good chunk of my life, and both the food and the service has degraded to the point where I will NOT go back there again. Heaven help you if you show up when more than 2 other people are in the place, because as soon as there are 3+ people in the restaurant the kitchen will arbitrarily cut 1/2 to 2/3rds off the menu and not warn you at all. All they will do is yell at you when you try to order. The manager is like a broken hairdryer: he blows hot and cold, and it's best to avoid him entirely. He will make a point of milling around on busy nights yelling at people. He nearly brought some of my family members to tears because we had the audacity to order noodles. While one member of the waitstaff is agreeable and kind (an older man whose name escapes me), the rest of them are ATROCIOUSLY rude!! There's an older woman waitress who will make a point of treating you like a second class citizen if you don't order alcohol or pork. If she's annoyed because not ordering booze would bring down the bill and thus her tip, she should focus on getting a serious attitude adjustment. It should be common knowledge that people are more inclined to tip you if you don't behave like scorched cat throughout the meal. If I could give this restaurant NEGATIVE stars, I would. Women behind bar (Chinese) maybe owner was horrifically rude. I had a sip of a drink that was disgusting, (hard to tell whats in it or what you would like though when there are no descriptions and when you ask they say fruit juice). I asked for something else and she screamed over the bar saying that I wouldn't like anything. She then proceeded to charge me for the drink that I asked to be taken out because I did not like it. Then I got a receipt that was signed by her without a detailed copy. Don't know what's going on with that place definitely not legal. Please have practice of hospitality. read more

Sonny the owner is nice but loud he has fun and interacts with his customers. He made me a special shrimp appetizer not on the menu it was good. Free tea. No dessert. Free fortune cookie. Street parking. Service was up and down. Brown rice good. Kung pao chicken meh. Sweet and sour sauce on the table yay! A bit pricey. Nice place not too big maybe 48 seats. I'll be back and I know there are entrees I will like better since their quality of food and care for customers is evident. read more

I was there last night for New Years Eve and was disgusted to find 2 mice in the women's bathroom. I approached the owner (the pompous Asian man wearing a wedding vest) and he asked me to leave. I was shocked. There are plenty of other better places around and I find it not only disgusting that Cheng-Du doesn't care about cleanliness, but that the owner doesn't care about new customers. This place has a nice ambience and interior. Food is good too. But it needs real good employees. People who work here have a very sad and boring face. They do a lot of mistake right from beginning to taking order. I was not given silver wares and table cloths. So I won't visit this place next time. read more

Thank God for Cheng-Du. If you go through my reviews you will find that I despise Quan's and Foxboro Mandarin is okay at best. I will be ordering from Cheng-Du's often. read more
