This is one of the better Chinese places in Hilo. The beauty about this place is that it is also close to my other favorite place - K's drive in and Kadota Liquors! Cheng's makes solid, good tasting Chinese food for good prices. The take out boxes may look normal, but they totally pack in the food! That lady at the counter. The only thing I come here for is the cake noodles -- they are so crispy! However last time I ordered the cake noodles -- there was no cake form to it just a bunch of loose crispy noodles in a bag. I was disappointed and haven't gone back since. It's also interesting you always somehow end up spending $50+ for two people (two entrees and fried rice, and a drink). Not sure how that goes -- but for that price, I'd rather eat something else. Everything else is your average Chinese food with the hot line. I've been to this place more than 10 times now and every time, the flavor of everything is consistent. I've been to other places with more stars and it's hit or miss. Updated Review. I didn't want to write another review since I accepted the fact that they overcharge when saying what the total is. It's really bad business but whatever. If they want to do that then it's up to the customer to continue to patronize them. But something recently happened and it's very concerning. We bought a few dishes and paid with a credit card. The total of the food was the absolute total....no tip because we give the tip in cash. When we got our credit card statement, there was a $3.00 overcharge. This is theft. The other usual overcharge is somewhat like false advertising since the totals do not equal the prices that are printed. But in this case, she mentioned a price but the total was increased later without authorization. I'm not going to make a big deal of this but wanted to warn everyone that they should be aware of the shenanigans that are happening. I guess buyer beware in this case. It's up to you. read more

BEWARE! Got overcharged and when it was brought to her attention, she immediately gave me a mean look and hurled all kinds of excuses, half muttering in her anger. She tried to blame me for ordering what I ordered, said that the menu prices needs to be changed/updated, AND prices went up on ingredients so she has to charge more now, among other "reasons" (excuses). Pure greed the owners of this restaurant here. You get some serious attitude whenever there's any problems with your orders of food or anything you complain about the lady has the last laugh. You will see what I mean first hand if you frequent this place. Pay close attention to the menu prices and add everything up yourself before paying for your food. You may notice you get charged more than you should here. Go up next door to K's and you might notice the same thing on certain menu items. Food is decent almost as good as Ling's. Cheng's was absolutely excellent (better than the current Ling's) when they were at the Kaiko'o mall many years ago. Nowdays not as tasty. For a while I've been craving Chinese food, so glad I came here. Food: We ended up getting Egg fu young, lemon chicken, shrimp canton and fried rice, (family style). It was the BOMB! I loved it and I would definitely come back, the lemon sauce was perfect for the crispy chicken, the shrimp canton was puffy and moist the sauce just adds so much flavor of deliciousness. Service: Food came out super fast! I'd say less the 10 min and it was out! The chef was on point! The waitress was busy at first but none the less awesome and asked if we needed anything else. Chengs WAS our go to Chinese restaurant. NOT ANYMORE!!!!! We ordered 2 plates (to go) of the crispy chicken, one with oyster sauce and the other with lemon sauce. Both plates we requested the sauce on the side because we live 10 minutes away and didn't want our chicken to get soggy. When we got home, we discovered that the lady (middle aged Chinese woman) forgot to put our sauce in the box!!!! I called them up to let her know but another worker answered. No apology as given. She just said to come back for it. So we did.... When we got there, I told the middle aged Chinese woman that she forgot my sauce. I didn't believe her reaction!!! She looked at me as if I was wrong. Like I was lying to her. She mumbled something in Chinese and stormed into the kitchen. A few moments later, she came out with our sauce, with madness she proceeded to cover the containers and again mumbled something in Chinese. Then she turn her back to me like she wanted me to disappear or something. All the while, we were given no apology, no compensation for our return trip. By the time we got home, our food was cold and the rice was hard/stale. We have never been disrespected like that in any food establishment here in Hilo!!! We will never return to that place because of the way we were treated. A few times in the past, we were over charged for 2 plates. Our bill came out to be close to $50. For two people?!?!?! We should of went to The Seaside Restaurant for that amount. Their hot line is sub par. Everything looked dry like it was the leftovers from lunch. Save your money. I read Yelp's unflattering reviews of Chengs today & tried to call my husband that I'll instead pick-up cheeseburgers at K's Drive-In. Too late, met up w/him at home & he bought Cheng's! First of all critics are right! He paid $50 (I understand this is a mathematical anomaly for this restaurant) for a small container of Orange chicken, a medium fried rice and large container of beef broccoli. Beef broccoli should be renamed Broccoli Beef as it had very little meat. It was tasty tho. Fried rice? I think I like Panda Express better. Same for Orange Chicken. My husband bought a mung bean soup but I choose to skip it. Bottom-line: If you got $50 to spare give this place a try. Otherwise, Panda Express is a better alternative. Swang by here yesterday and my whole experience was rather... meh. We went in 'ohana style and I chose the $4.75 crispy gau gee (10) and cake noodles (12). My family opted for a pork dish, as well as canton shrimp and orange chicken. The pictures really make the dishes seem better than they actually were. The orange chicken had too much breading, the cake noodles were soggy, and the pork dish was drowing in sauce even though it shouldn't have. The taste was okay. My main problem was the gau gee. First off it was folded in little triangles and not the normal rectange style. Secondly, there was hardly any meat in it, literally only a micro-sized bite. The restaurant just seemed so dirty. One of the workers was peeling ginger in this big box right in the middle of the restaurant during dinner rush. The glass to showcase the hot food needed a serious spray-down. I'd much rather go to Happy Valley, or even Panda's. read more

I absolutely love the food here, always have since I was little. My parents always come here to eat. Oyster sauce chicken with fried rice and cake noodles is my absolute favorite. My boyfriend likes the char siu and roast pork specialty plate w/ fried rice and cake noodles. I'm definitely disappointed today thou when I realized I was overcharged. Cheng is the only worker there most of the time, but she does it all. Taking your order, making the plate, and accepting the payment. She is very courteous and is always smiling. Yes the food is served from a steam table, but it's good. She has: Crispy chicken with lemon, oyster or sweet sour sauce, pork and peas, chicken or pork adobo, pinacbet, veggie dishes, lumpia, etc. Each plate comes with a choice of white rice, fried rice or noodles. You can even do half rice and noodles. It is a small place with just a couple of tables to eat in, but most people take out. The price ranges from about $6 for one choice to about $8 for two to three choices. Cheng's is located on Lanikaula St. right now, but will soon be moving to Hualalai St. right below K's Drive Inn in a couple of months. read more

Also, if you ever eaten there you will notice that ONLY the owner is the one who handles the register.. no one else. One Regular plate lunch (letter I) $10.75 substituted the white rice with fried rice $1.00 Two small drinks $1.35 each With that being said..the total comes out to $14.47 I'm pretty sure tax isn't that much either to the point where it comes out to $18.30!! She charged me $18.30 for a regular plate lunch with two small drinks. Also... prices changed for the crispy roast pork..one plate of that is $18.00. CAN YOU SAY..RIPPPPP OFF!!!
