I came in today for just the roast duck and shrimp fried rice , and let me tell you, I should've just ate the paper menu because it probably would've tasted better . My first red flag was when the table in the front had a hair in their food .... But hey that's beside the point. The shrimp fried rice had 7 shrimp...7!!! It's not seasoned at all just egg and boiled shrimp , not even a lil green onion or soy sauce ..then the duck was like greasy and lacked luster and I asked for the duck "sauce "/ drippings and I was given hosin sauce ( ew) but I ate some because I'm not wasting my money lol. Did I mention I payed $58....... And for that much I would've expected the customer service to be top tier ... and no shocker the food matched the customer service 0/10 again. My family and I have just started eating here and been here many 5 times max, but the food has been great every time so far. The restaurant itself seems like your typical Chinese restaurant setup with some booths along the window and larger round tables in the middle. It is a smaller restaurant, so maybe 10ish tables are inside max. We try to mix things up every time we come, but we always get the salt pepper pork ribs and the hot and sour soup! I find most places are either a hot or miss with the soup, but they are definitely my favorite place that makes it! And the pork ribs are the best. As my mom puts it, they're the perfect accompaniment to any meal since they're so crispy and tasty. She even commented she would get just the ribs so she can "snack" on it while watching the Super Bowl. Service can be a bit on the slower side, but every time we came, there's only been one person in the front answering the phone while catering to the people dining in and I believe they make the food when you order it so definitely not a quick place to eat if you're short on time but I find the wait always worth it. read more

What does a skeleton order at a restaurant? Spare ribs! Now, I've not seen any skeletons at Happy Valley that wouldn't have been there anyway, but I've definitely had their ribs and they're bomb. Good as they are, though, I think their peking duck is my favorite (shocker). The thing with Happy Valley is, if you're not doing family style when you eat here, you're doing it wrong. You can easily afford to have a few favorites at this place and be able to order all of them and then some! And there's a wealth of options for you to choose from. You really just need to make sure your friends and fam have brought their appetites. Happy Valley is located in Hilo Shopping Center, right there when you turn in off of Kilauea Ave. You'll likely be able to find a table on most week nights, but I do believe they do reservations, so it can't hurt to call ahead. The staff is friendly and everything inside is clean. And while I do think this place really shines as a spot for groups to dine at, you can absolutely come with a smaller party. I have ordered takeout 6 to 8 times between 2019 and 2023. I've enjoyed the the salt and pepper spare ribs (excellent always). Chow funn (noodles are often cheap and tasteless), chicken with string beans are sometimes so stringy I can't eat them, chicken and mixed veggies are spot on every time. Don't order anything with bamboo shoots they are often My main pet peace, NO UPDATED menus online. Why? I'm sick and tired of restaurants that charge you what they feel like charging you, since Covid. I'm over it. Be truthful. We will still come to your restaurant and we will respect you more. Amaaazing food. The service is a little lackluster and the location might suggest "poor quality," but don't let the appearance fool you. I was expecting small portions, but with soup, chicken and eggplant, and a beef dish, there was enough left over for two more meals. You do have to ask for water, and the bathroom is small. It isn't air conditioned, and you do have to take initiative for almost everything, but the food is worth it. Things came out hot, and quickly, and were delicious. They are closed just after lunch, it seems, but if you want an early dinner, it's a good option. As we were leaving, the crowds started to come in, and I did notice them making arrangements for wheelchairs and small kids. Worth a trip if you want some authentic Chinese food. read more

I read the review and try to get a steamed local whole fish but they did not have it. I am not sure they will have it again since carrying fresh steamed whole fish caused more resources. I had the steamed swai fillet instead which is not bad but I felt it could use more soy sauce and oil and ginger be finely shredded. The Eng choy or On choy was good and only $9.95 which was low price. The calamari in salt and pepper would be better if it had more salt and pepper and some garlic and onion. The is a hole in the wall restaurant with authetic Cantonese food. Rice was $1.50 and tea was $.75 but the price is low and this is Hawaii, so that is reasonable. read more

This is the best place to eat at the Hilo Shopping Center given the choice of all restaurants here if freshness is a priority. They make your food order fresh then and there. The other restaurants in this Hilo Shopping Center that I had already tried several times tasted premade or frozen and then reheated. Nice little resteraunt in a shopping plaza just outside Hilo town. We started with salt and pepper calamari, flavor was good and the calamari was cook well and not chewy. First entrée we had was the oxtail soup, once again the flavor was good just the portion size was a little small. Finally we finished with dry beef chow fun, the portion size was a bit better and there was a good amount of beef, well flavored and tender. Parking is easy in the shopping plaza and seating was comfortable with nicely padded chairs. The resteraunt was very clean and the facilities were appropriately tended to. read more

I had to order that on top of it although it was on the same page as combo items that Included rice. So that was confusing. My order came out a full 10 min before my husbands. Tried the special family dinner which is advertised on the wall. Seemed like an interesting menu. However it wasn't that good. The soup looked unappetizing since it was whitish in color. Looked cloudy and weird. Taste was bland for an abalone and chicken soup. Weird combination and it wasn't good. I believe a simple egg drop soup would have been a better soup. All the other dishes were bland except for the salt and ribs although it was very boney and a change from before. They used to be pretty good and maybe it's just that special menu. I'm hoping that the other dishes are better. But I think they should remove that special 9 course dinner menu. I've seen this kind of "special family menu" at other Chinese restaurants in Honolulu and I will never order it ever again. It looks like a good deal but the quality is substandard. First visit, decent size place in the Hilo Shopping mall, its first business on right end. Been craving Chinese, hard to find here. Menu had a lot of options. I didn't see couple of my favorites though such as Almond Fried Chicken, General Taos or Garlic Chicken. I started to order the Kung Pao Chicken when she asked if I wanted a side of rice? What, a meal that's simply the entree no soup or rice comes with it ? Never seen that before . So then she pointed out menu section that includes rice, so for a dollar more it was pick two choices w/ rice $11.95 ok. So I chose Mongolian beef and lemon chicken. It's a Friday at lunch time 12:30 and no one in the place eating, hhmmmm. I hurried to look on Yelp before ordering to make sure it wasn't a one or two star place. Whew, not bad with like 3 1/2 stars. My plate came out within 10 mins. I asked for low sodium soy sauce but don't offer strangely. I then asked for hot chili sauce which she brought, pretty sure Sriracha. Presentation looks good. Just prefer chunks of onion in my beef dish but broccoli fresh and tasty. Beef and sauce tender good. Lemon chicken had nice fried chicken batter and crunch, tender inside. Only thing wasn't crazy about lemon sauce, tasted like a fake semi-citrus syrup. Reminded me of one I bought in the grocery packet, Noh brand? Mixed with chili sauce and rice it was ok but wouldn't order that flavor again. Gal was likely owner, pleasant. When we visit our family in Hilo, this place is usually on the list of places we are taken to. Maybe it's because it's located really close to the uncle's house we are staying at, I'm not sure. The food is alright. To me, for some reason that the theme about Hilo food though and this one falls back into the pack of Hilo food that is so-so. Jesse W. put it best, "not spectacular, but pretty good for Hilo standards." It's located in a small shopping center so parking shouldn't be a problem at all. read more
