I recently had the luncheon buffet at Poly Feng Yuan for a Senior Christmas Luncheon. To be honest, because I primarily live on Oahu where there are so many good Chinese Restaurants, I didn't know what to expect. The buffet is very limited but adequate and overall decent! No dish IMO was outstanding! Many of the fried items, were ready made and heated (fried dumplings, sesame balls, lumpia, fried fish). Hot items were lukewarm at best. If they could keep the hot dishes at a better temperature, the food would definitely be more enjoyable. They had Shrimp and Clams on the buffet, which was a nice addition. Service is very good. Water and Hot tea refilled and dishes cleared as you ate. Although I won't be rushing back, if you like "all you can eat" buffets you may enjoy the one here! read more

Other favorites are the General's Chicken and the Grilled Fish! Nice additional selection for kids too, like French fries, green salad, and chicken nuggets, and surely the kids would love the tasty sesame duy balls too. While they were closure over a year because they got fired and remodeling. After reopening they started serving lunch buffet. First time we had lunch buffet there and pretty much enjoyed. Food was I would say "decent" but not terrible like a P- express. Lunch only served buffet and dinner served only from menu. Buffet selection is not big just about 10-12 items. I miss Chinese buffet in Seattle we used to live there. So much selection including oysters, crab and huge dessert section, but this is Hilo so I can't compare with them. Waitress says few things changed everyday but mostly very basic stuff. I loved Ginger Chicken ( chilled ) and Salt & Pepper Shrimp da best. All server are friendly and considerate. If I had to say few things, I'd say would be better if there were more soup and desserts. I really want to try their "Duck" next time when I go to dinner. read more

I hate giving bad reviews but we were really disappointed. We went here based on reviews and the lunch buffet. The food was very limited and not very good when we visited. May have been an off day, but we barely finished anything we got. The placement of the lights and fans create a dizzying effect at a couple of the tables so we had to move a couple times. Bok Choy was good, but not great. The biggest disappointment was the Sizzling beef Platter. When the dish is called 'Sizzling' you expect the dish to come out sizzling. It wasn't. It was the biggest let down, because you're expecting for a show. The beef was chunky. The tendons and fat between the meat was chewy and the vegetables weren't even sizzling. They were pretty much raw. It wasn't a terrible place. The staff was nice, but I don't think I'll go out of my way to drive all the way here again. Parking was crowded, meaning narrow spaces. Great place, but from the street it looks like it's empty. Looked at their menu and said I've got to try it. What a surprise! Their general chicken was delicious and appetizers were very pleasing. The staff are friendly family ran and operated. I would have all the employees park on the front so it looks like it's busy during the day. At night the parking lot looks active. Delicious meal at Poly Feng Yuan in Hilo- pictures says it all. We've been looking for a good chinese restaurant and this place hit the spot. For apps, we had the potstickers/steam dumplings, fried dumplings, egg roll and banana egg rolls. The potstickers had a thin delicate skin filled with a delicious filling. The fried dumplings were crispy but not greasy. Same with the egg rolls. we also ordered wonton mein, duck noodle soup, crispy roast duck, clams with black beans and a side of salted duck eggs. plus a to go order of orange chicken. Everything was delicious- clams were perfectly cooked in a delicious black bean sauce. Roast duck was juicy and the price was so low- $15 for this whole plate! Service was outstanding! Sorry to say but the food leaves a lot to be desired. It's slim pickings for Chinese restaurants in Hilo, and we had hoped PFY would make the cut, offering a viable option when the hankering for Chinese food pops up. Our most recent order was the worst. Veggie dishes largely lacked in vegetables and the few pieces present were overcooked. Roast pork with tofu and snow peas saw the pork stale tasting, snow peas I counted totaled 12 pieces, and tofu was bland - the sauce itself lacked any discernible taste. Just a stale taste is what lingered. The char siu in the fried rice also tasted stale. Beef chow fun was bland, pale and lacked the slight char you'd expect from a proper toss in the wok. Other than the almond cookies and the ginger chicken (served cold or room temperature, steamed, heavily peppered with a green onion and ginger chutney, which serves as the chicken's main seasoning and source of flavor), It's been hit or miss on each of the 1/2 dozen times we've been - both dining in and taking out. The prices for the mediocre taste and sub par quality of food make me doubt if my family and I will allow ourselves to give it another shot - in case the bad experiences were off days - but dropping $80-$125 each time is a lot to warrant for rolling the dice on dishes that fail to make the cut, much less, be palatable... Chinese takeout: $11.77. Price of gas to get there: $1.90. Making it all the way home and realizing that you forgot one of the containers: Riceless... Just above the Kawailani/Kinoole Pizza Hut, Poly Feng Yuan is very conveniently located if you live in or near the Waiakea area. Poly Feng Yuan serves authentic Chinese food, and boy do they do it well! Everything here is made per each order, so it's always hot and fresh when you get it. This does up the wait time a little bit, but be patient, it's worth it in the long run! If I were to hand out a pro-tip for picking up from Poly Feng Yuan, it'd be to call your order in 20-30 minutes ahead of time. Your food will almost definitely be ready by the time you arrive, depending on how much you order, and it'll certainly still be warm. That'll actually allow for your food to be the prefect temperature for eating anyway. I've picked up and gotten the food right when it came out of the kitchen and it was so hot there was no way you could eat it yet anyway. If you want to sit down to eat, there's plenty of seating in their very large dining room. The restaurant's interior as a whole is nice and the staff are very friendly. If I were to pin down one thing that could *potentially* be an issue, it would really only be parking. There are a few parking spaces in front of the building and a small parking lot behind it, but other than that not a lot. You could always park in one of the lots nearby and walk over, though, so it's not a huge deal. Overall, I've really enjoyed my meal any time I've eaten at Poly Feng Yuan, and would definitely recommend them to anyone that's looking to try a new Chinese spot. read more

I was surprised how empty the restaurant was on a Sunday evening. It appears that they do a fair amount of takeout business. The food was very good Chinese food. There was no fusion type, just good Chinese. We had the house fried noodles (combination chow mein), pot sticker, wor wonton soup and general Tsos chicken. All were well done. I'm giving a bit higher rating but can't give 1/2 stars, but I'd say 3 1/2. Online their website isn't in English and the most recent one on Yelp was 2020. I called in an order based on that info/prices. We chose the combo plates that come 1 entree choice, a scoop of white rice and streamed pork & sweet/sour pork riblets...Fried rice $1 extra. We chose General Tso's and Orange chicken. I also ordered Mongolian Beef and wanted to see what Cake Noodle/gravy was like. I knew it was too much food but really wanted to give their food a try. When I picked up the food it was hot and ready on time. But must say I was a bit shocked by the bill, $58. I had based off the 2yr. old Yelp menu thinking in my head it would be roughly $45, the items have gone up basically $4 per item. Ok, we'll I could see it would be at least two meals, was just hoping this pricey lunch would impress. Upon opening the containers at home I must say the portion and look of everything was impressive! Very large servings for the combo plates especially which were $15/16 each. The steamed pork tasty, slightly sweet and tender, the sweet/sour pork really sweet and flavored with/Chinese 5 spice, good but be cautious as it had bits of bone/cartilage and a lot of fat, more like pork belly. I think we'd probably just get the entrees next time with side of rice and soup. We both really enjoyed our chicken dishes, crisp, tender and plenty of flavorful sauce. Although we both agreed we ate a sodium bomb and it was really rich being fried with concentrated sauce... but yes we were happy to get our Chinese craving satisfied. Can't understand why so few pics on Yelp. The restaurant has plenty of seating and parking. The Mongolian Beef $16 was very thin slices of fork tender beef smothered in sautéed onions. Again rich and on salty side. I think I'll request low sodium soy sauce in the future as that's what we switched to few years back. The Cake noodle wasn't what I expected, I love all noodles but this was spongy and bland, not a fan but now I know. Sadly $9 and couldn't eat. I rarely give a 1 star review, but felt compelled to after our awful experience last night - one star is one star too many, unfortunately. We decided to check out a new (to us) place instead of going with a tried and true favorite. We'd driven by this place several times and were intrigued by the fact that it really looks like it used to be a house. On the positive side we have: Plenty of off-street parking. In Hawaii that's always a plus. We went in for an early dinner, so didn't expect it to be packed, but it wasn't THAT early, and the place was empty other than one other table. The place is so dated and a little... dumpy. We walked in through the side entrance, and the waitresses looked at us a little funny, so right away we got a sort of uncomfortable vibe from them (hey, it's a door and we parked right next to it - what was the issue?) They asked how many were in our party and just sort of indicated the other side of the room to sit. After we sat, it seemed like we didn't choose the table we were supposed to choose, so there was another weird moment where we were made to feel like we were imposing or something. The menus were scribbled on and a little sticky. However, the table and settings were nice and clean, and when water glasses were brought to us they were sparkling clean and filled with icy cold water. That's probably the second-to-last positive thing you're going to read in this review, so brace yourself. First, our waitress asked if we both wanted tea. I wasn't sure if it was included, but I said yes because I always like tea with Chinese food. The pot of tea was brought to the table and I started to pour it - it clearly wasn't fully brewed so I waited a while and then poured some more. It looked like water from a mop bucket. I opened the pot to see what the deal was and realize it wasn't steeping, because they'd just poured weak, almost flavorless, under-brewed tea into the pot. It wasn't getting any better. Then we ordered - we got shrimp egg foo yung, honey/walnut shrimp and an order of crispy gao gee. I was asked if I wanted spicy mustard, and said yes. I can not explain how disappointing every single part of the meal was. The gao gee, which was a pupu, came out last. First delivered was the egg foo yung, which was full of weirdly unevenly cut and cooked veg. The gravy was... well, it was a flavorless, gelatinous mess. The shrimp were clearly just tossed on with no additional cooking or flavoring. Next, the honey/walnut shrimp. This dish is usually a "safe" bet. Even Panda Express gets it right. But here? The sauce was almost inedible (think melted beef candy - and I'm not exaggerating.) The shrimp were the same as the ones on the egg foo yung - boiled (maybe precooked, frozen, who knows?) that were just plain. I've never had honey/walnut shrimp where the shrimp weren't battered and fried, but this was just plain shrimp thrown into the sauce with some walnuts that were also just tossed in, not coated and flavored with the sauce. It was inedible. Then the gao gee. First, despite saying that I did, indeed, want hot mustard, none was brought to me. So then I asked for it again and that earned me a grimace from the young waitress before she brought it to me. The gao gee were definitely crispy. So crispy, in fact, that they were burned, and I could taste every other item that had been burned in that same deep fryer for the last week/month/who knows. You could -smell- the old cooking oil from the kitchen, and you could taste it on the gao geel. It's a shame, because the filling in them was the one tasty thing on the table. Usually I like to give a place at least 2 tries before writing them off, but I can say with completely confidence that there is absolutely no reason for us to ever go back to this place. Nothing. It was awful, and while the service was adequate, it was -just- adequate. The food came out promptly, but when there are only 2 populated tables, that should be a given. I would have had a better meal at Zippy's and I hate Zippy's. read more

Whenever I want leftovers for lunch the next day I'll definitely come here. The prices to the amount that they give is totally worth it. Everyone in my family had extra to take home. One of us had the special crispy roast pork which was very tasty not tough and chewy at all, came with a nice big scoop of rice and a drink. Only for 8.50? Egg fu yung, Fried Rice was also delicious. I also like the fact that they have Local food and not just the normal chinese food menu. Chicken Katsu, Curry, Hamburger steak etc.A little something for everyone! Service was also good too.
