I was driving through Hilo, HI and wanted to find a bite to eat. We stumbled upon Sum Leung and the plate lunch was perfect! The line out of the door at 11AM told me that I was at the right place. I wanted the three choice plate lunch, but after picking two sides, it was impossible to add a third. The portion sizes are huge and plentiful for two adults. I ate right outside of the store and enjoyed a great lunch!

I had box lunch of cha su and roast pork. Delicious. Friendly old men at outside tables.

We always make takeouts! My wife had an all afternoon shopping so in her last stop at KTA she decided to get the family Sum Leung's takeouts for dinner. She got me egg fu yung, beef broccoli, roast pork and fried rice. And bag of crispy won tons to share!

Review #21 for 2020. I was craving manapua and saw that Sum Leung makes their own. Called ahead to order half a dozen for my cousin's birthday and for my family to eat. Ordered some char siu as well. The manapua was super soft. I usually prefer baked manapua, but cannot find in Hilo, and this steamed one was super ono! The char siu was super good too. Gotta love the burnt ends. Any way, Sum Leung is now my go-to place for steamed manapua in Hilo! This place is located next to KTA Puainako and Hiro's. Lots of parking. It's counter style and pretty inexpensive overall. Happy to support a local business!

Had a line out the door so figured it was good so we jumped in to try. Buffet service style. Mistake. Out of the staples usually found in Chinese food. Chow Mien noodles were so dry they were inedible. Vegetables over cooked. Clerk could care less 'we paid already'. Got two stars because the duck was decent.

    Roast pork

This has to be one of the best roast pork I have ever tasted. BBQ pork is also really good. Of course there are many other items that are good too. There is always a line out the door.

More food than a normal appetite could consume! I love this place. Conveniently located in the Puainako shopping center next to KTA in Hilo. The owner ,or rather owners son Tim, made this plate of fresh crispy cake noodle for me in the back. Fresh broccoli carrots onions shrimp and beef with crispy cake noodles and then he brought out some hot sauce for me to try And a hot banana Lumpia for desert. The whole thing cost me $10 which was a steal at today's plate lunch prices. I highly recommend this Chinese restaurant when you come to Hilo you will go away full and happy. It's nothing fancy but they do have indoor as well as outdoor seating and the service is prompt and professional. The kitchen is clean and the food is fresh and hot. I give this take out or eat in Chinese restaurant four and a half stars.

Coming back from Volcano National Park stopped at Hilo for late lunch . First stop at Hiro's place since they supposedly serve Hawaiian as well as Filipino and Japanese food. Was no to crazy with the selection so I started to leave and I saw Sum Leung. Food is very flavorful and the employees are very nice. They let you sample the food as well as gave a great expianation. I got the pork with squash as well as pork adobo. Was not able to finish the food. Very generous helping. Will definitely come back next time I'm in Hilo.

I got the veggie cake noodle. While the sauce was ok, the noodles were way too hard to eat. Very oily too!

My first red flag was when the table in the front had a hair in their food .... But hey that's beside the point. The shrimp fried rice had 7 shrimp...7!!! It's not seasoned at all just egg and boiled shrimp , not even a lil green onion or soy sauce ..then the duck was like greasy and lacked luster and I asked for the duck "sauce "/ drippings and I was given hosin sauce ( ew) but I ate some because I'm not wasting my money lol. Did I mention I payed $58....... And for that much I would've expected the customer service to be top tier ... and no shocker the food matched the customer service 0/10 again. I'm not mad just disappointed. First restaurant in Hilo -0 /10 .

The restaurant itself seems like your typical Chinese restaurant setup with some booths along the window and larger round tables in the middle. It is a smaller restaurant, so maybe 10ish tables are inside max. We try to mix things up every time we come, but we always get the salt pepper pork ribs and the hot and sour soup! I find most places are either a hot or miss with the soup, but they are definitely my favorite place that makes it! And the pork ribs are the best. As my mom puts it, they're the perfect accompaniment to any meal since they're so crispy and tasty. She even commented she would get just the ribs so she can "snack" on it while watching the Super Bowl. Service can be a bit on the slower side, but every time we came, there's only been one person in the front answering the phone while catering to the people dining in and I believe they make the food when you order it so definitely not a quick place to eat if you're short on time but I find the wait always worth it.

The servers were running around all night, and it seemed that they were a little bit understaffed. However, they still did their best to attend to us, and food came out promptly. As most other pho shops, they provide plenty of bean sprouts, mint, lemons, and sauces (oyster sauce/Sriracha) to enjoy. Pho Rare Beef (6.5/10) - the broth was good, flavorful, rich and salty as expected from Vietnamese pho. As this spot is kind of a Viet/Chinese fusion, don't go in expecting the best pho of your life. However, the broth is definitely delicious and will fix your pho cravings - only comment is regarding the beef itself. Some of the pieces were definitely a little thicker, tougher, and at points difficult to chew. The beef was not then these sliced into the brisket that I'm used to finding, but that's OK Overall, pretty good pho spot on the Big Island with quite tasty broth.
