Da line was supah long when I arrived for lunch today (das one good sign), but when I finally made it into the restaurant, I could see so many ono choices. Upon looking over da hot food items, I decided to get da two item plate with choice of starch. I got the following - Lemon Chicken, Beef Broccoli *I don't eat beef, but ate all the veggies*, 1/2 Fried Rice & 1/2 Chow Mein Noodles. What can I say about da grub? Ono kine comfort food at it's BESTEST!!! Loved da Lemon Chicken, nice & crispy with a great lemon sauce. I even put some of dat sauce on my fried rice! Buggah was ono! I liked the veggies with da beef broccoli, and it was the perfect side with all my starch. I saw a sign that said Chow Fun is sometimes available, but unfortunately when I stopped by today, I did not see any chow fun. Easy access to Sum Leung Chinese Kitchen because it's situated in a large strip mall with plenty of free parking. No inside dining, as Sum Leung Chinese Kitchen is strictly "take-out, grab & go". I was driving through Hilo, HI and wanted to find a bite to eat. We stumbled upon Sum Leung and the plate lunch was perfect! The line out of the door at 11AM told me that I was at the right place. I wanted the three choice plate lunch, but after picking two sides, it was impossible to add a third. The portion sizes are huge and plentiful for two adults. This rating is based on the portion size of an extra side of cake noodles with was $6. Just ordered a vegetarian cake noodle with extra cake noodles. The lady told me it wouldn't fit in the container. When I got home and opened the container, the amount of noodles in there would've fit with the gravy and vegetables that she put into a separate container. It didn't even look like any extra noodles were added at all. The regular plate lunch container was half full with cake noodles only. I see more food going into a person's 2 choice plate. Should've got that instead, cost almost $22 for vegetarian cake noodles & "extra" noodles, while a 2 choice plate is $15. read more

Review #21 for 2020. I was craving manapua and saw that Sum Leung makes their own. Called ahead to order half a dozen for my cousin's birthday and for my family to eat. Ordered some char siu as well. The manapua was super soft. I usually prefer baked manapua, but cannot find in Hilo, and this steamed one was super ono! The char siu was super good too. Gotta love the burnt ends. Any way, Sum Leung is now my go-to place for steamed manapua in Hilo! This place is located next to KTA Puainako and Hiro's. Lots of parking. It's counter style and pretty inexpensive overall. Had a line out the door so figured it was good so we jumped in to try. Buffet service style. Mistake. Out of the staples usually found in Chinese food. I'm giving four stars for the quantity and value. Crazy big plate of food. They pile it on! And prices are very fair. One of the customers in line suggested the beef broccoli and the char siu. But I was in the mood for the spicey egg plant and the sweet sour pork. Spicey eggplant was not bad but the sweet sour pork really could have used bigger pieces of pork (all of mine were really small pieces) and very few of them. Mostly pineapple and bell pepper. I should have listened to the advice I got! LOL! The chow mein was good but the fried rice (?) was meh. But I'd definitely go back and give it another try. By the way, for "regular" eaters, you can share a plate with someone else and probably still have leftovers!!! read more

I really like this place. The staff is really nice & servings are humongous! I just had a plate with half rice & half noodles for the starch, bok choi with chicken & beef broccoli. Fresh & tasty. Lots of vege. I've also had wor mein that they bring to you. It's super yummy. It's totally for locals. Haole would not get it. I read a review that said the rice was bland. Ha! More food than a normal appetite could consume! I love this place. Conveniently located in the Puainako shopping center next to KTA in Hilo. The owner ,or rather owners son Tim, made this plate of fresh crispy cake noodle for me in the back. Fresh broccoli carrots onions shrimp and beef with crispy cake noodles and then he brought out some hot sauce for me to try And a hot banana Lumpia for desert. The whole thing cost me $10 which was a steal at today's plate lunch prices. I highly recommend this Chinese restaurant when you come to Hilo you will go away full and happy.It's nothing fancy but they do have indoor as well as outdoor seating and the service is prompt and professional. Coming back from Volcano National Park stopped at Hilo for late lunch . First stop at Hiro's place since they supposedly serve Hawaiian as well as Filipino and Japanese food. Was no to crazy with the selection so I started to leave and I saw Sum Leung. Food is very flavorful and the employees are very nice. They let you sample the food as well as gave a great expianation. I got the pork with squash as well as pork adobo. Was not able to finish the food. Very generous helping. Will definitely come back next time I'm in Hilo. read more

Never knew Hawaii's Chinese food was different from the mainland till I left for college and ordered lemon chicken for the first time. Hawaii style is a super crispy and light cornstarch batter, similar to katsu with a pretty thin lemon sauce. Everywhere else seems to be thick almost pancake batter w a nasty looking goopy lemon sauce - usually it's their sweet and sour chicken w different sauce. Cake noodle as we know it also seems to be a regional thing. There's one Hawaii style Chinese place in Vegas with really good gau gee mein cake noodle but their lemon chicken is nothing compared to leungs. Plate lunch at leungs is always one of my first stops in Hilo. All the food is good, but I've always been obsessed w their lemon chicken. Unfortunately their manapua and pork hash isn't nearly as good as it used to be. Ever since 711 switched to this different crappy brand a few years ago ive been looking for another good manapua place - any suggestions would be appreciated. read more

I tried the lunch plates, one choice ($7.50) and the two choice ($10.25). For these plates I tried the cold ginger chicken, roast pork, and sweet and sour spareribs. The cold ginger chicken was okay but wasn't that good. It had a layer of oil at the bottom and spilled over onto the noodles side, it was very unappetizing. Won ton mein. Holy smokes. My husband, who's family lives in Honomu, brought me to this place just because it happened to be close to where we were snorkeling, and he remembered liking it. It's nothing fancy to look at, located in what's basically a strip mall, but I ended up ADDICTED. We were in Hawaii for a total of 12 days, and I made him bring me back for the won ton mein no less than five times. They also have excellent manapua. I can't vouch for any of the other items, since I love the won ton mein too much to order anything else, but I can vouch for the good prices and the large portions. read more

I love this place that no one can beat it for sure. They catered my wedding back in 2010, just enough food 2 pans each of my favorites that was less then 3K.
