Oh my, what happened to Ling's oyster chicken? This used to be my place for that chicken plate and fried rice, I'm not going to support this local business anymore, don't know if new owner or change of cook but the oyster chicken is now made of like chopped chicken thighs in oyster sauce and made like shoyu chicken but with oyster sauce. Damn inflation! I just bought one order of beef broccoli cake noodle and one order of roast pork and paid $42; $0.25 to have the noodles separate from the sauce. I just picked up 2 plates from the food line. Both my husband and I were dissatisfied. Upon ordering, I was told that the roast pork plate would take 10 mins. When I got there it was not ready. I was served the food on the steam line. I was under the impression that the roast pork was going to be fresh. Consumers beware, it seems like the food was warmed up multiple times or has been sitting out too long. The food was so unsatisfactory, and we have been supporting Lings for years. Not sure why the owners son is working in the front. He has such a grouch. He is so grumpy while taking orders and you. Can't hear him when he talks. You definitely don't come for the service. I'd say it's not your typical Chinese restaurant with fast service and never ending tea. It's not even your typical Hilo Chinese restaurant. I get it it's local style and we eat Chinese food all the time. But If you are only doing takeout it's good. I can't give more than one star for service, getting the crispy chicken with sauce on the side and egg foo yong and dai chop wui with cake noodles. But they run out of cake noodle sometimes. Hole in the wall chinese restaurant located around the corner from Foodland. Family has picked up take-out from here a couple times in the last few weeks, mediocre food, generous portions and alittle disappointment in the staff's attitude after we found brillo pad fragments in a stir fry dish, they just didn't seem to care. Business never answers her phone so you can place a to go order. Workers are so uneducated and untrained this establishment that they can't even work the register properly. You ask them for items that are on the menu and they don't know where to find them on the register so they say they're not available. Customer service is just poor. Me and my boyfriend made a take out order over the phone. They took our order, our name, and our number down. When we got to the restaurant, they claimed that they had lost our order and didn't have our order. They also asked if we even called the right restaurant which clearly we did because we've ordered take out from here before. So, on a busy night we then had to wait even longer for our order. I can honestly say that I had been frequenting Ling's Chop Suey for decades now. This place was absolutely perfect up until their fire and renovations several years ago then I noticed occasional hiccups after that. Prices went up. This was my go to for either lemon or oyster chicken (specifically ordered with sauce on the side) with fried rice and sometimes from their steam table in the past before encountering some not so tasty entrees. Their friendly and perfect service isn't as it used the be. You can even get unfriendly service. Your food won't taste as good as it should whenever you experience such negative or low and negative energy vibes. Check your pick up orders before leaving as some specific requests may have been forgotten or ignored. There were times the sauce was watery and just not as it should be. At least their fried chicken part were reasonably good and consistent. Fried rice isn't as tasty as before. Look at the old photos previous customers posted and look at your fried rice today. You can see as well taste the difference. I usually order the same plates and got charged different prices depending on who was working. It's either regular price or extra. Something has definitely changed over the years and I suspect the owner no longer plays a vital role in the business. I don't think she would allow her employees nor son to deliberately be rude or give out low and negative energy towards her customers. There was a time that the son was the main person in charge and I know for sure that he's definitely not a people person (he just doesn't have it in him nor ever will). This kind of thing can't be taught if they were born and brought up this way (his way). He (REALLY) should just be a cook hidden away in the back kitchen if he really must be present (on site). I truly think he is detrimental to the continued success of this local businesses if he is up front exposed to the paying customers behind the cash register. Perhaps this type of business just isn't for him or maybe he simply hates being there and it obviously shows and is doing this to deliberately sink this business to force it to lose enough customers to shut down then he no longer needs to work there. He should work at a job that doesn't require interaction with any other humans. If it's just pure laziness then I honestly don't know what else to say and I really hate to lay blame on parents. Positive energy is crucial to a successful business. There's big problems when customers experience even old timers working there who often have very bad days who really think no one's going to squeal on them. Closest comparable option is Cheng's (the other sibling) however I personally prefer not giving them any business because the lady owner deliberately rips her customers off at the checkout and really bad attitude whenever there's any problems with your order or food. Here's a good tip to keep things honest if there are any trust issues at the cash register. If not already implemented have a sequentially numbered chit system where nothing leaves the kitchen without a chit receipt in numerical order then at the end of closing the cash register shift add up the chit $$$ and compare it to the deposit and also the "z out" minus the regular drawer change allowance. Make a written log for the day with starting and ending chit numbers and reason for any missing chits in between. Another additional tip is to install cameras pointed at the cash register and also at incoming customers and set up for wifi so you can check what's going on anytime on your phone. This also deters overall trouble and potential armed robbery. read more

After Driving all over Hilo in search of this restaurant (cause we saw it on a Hilo food blog) we learned how many chop suey houses there were similar sounding to Ling's. There was a Leungs, Lungs?... and one other place. Anyways, that first night we gave up looking and settled for a drive-inn. The next night I was still obsessed and we finally found the place (we were tourists, what can I say?) I heard that the thing to order is the oyster sauce or lemon chicken. But...since we had fried chicken the night before, we ordered something else. Seafood Noodle Soup & Combo Plate: Sweet Sour Pork, the red braised pork ( I forgot the name), Shrimp with veggies, and steamed rice. The soup was good and full of Shrimp and Calamari, it had imitation crab and cabbage and other veggies also. The broth was tasty, but i wish that there had been more soup to the amount of noodles and seafood in the large bowl. The mixed combo plate was very delicious. The shrimp vegetable stir fry had a very nice flavor, and everything was cooked perfectly. The sweet sour and red pork were very tender and yummy. All the sauces were so yummy, not a grain of rice or drop of sauce was wasted. For the 3 of us, we spent under $18 including the tip. I don't know why I ordered two seafood dishes, but we were really happy and satisfied. Crispy Chicken with Oyster sauce....this is as original to Hilo as the Loco Moco. Ling's had a sister restaurant at the old Kaiko'o Mall, but we all know what happened to that mall....oh well, the childhood memories of that former Hilo hot spot. Ling's is fast becoming a Hilo landmark, because of it's longevity at the same location since the early 90's, and has some of the best Cantonese food in East Hawaii. Yes, the Crispy Chicken with Oyster sauce is my favorite at Lings, and you really can't find it any where else outside of the Big Island. In fact, there a place in Las Vegas that tried to copy the Lings recipe, and calls it " Hilo Style Oyster sauce chicken". It's not the same, but when where they have it....I'll order it. To say, I dream about eating the real macoy,,,,,yes, I do, and this plate would be one of the first dishes I'll hit when I'm in Hilo. Ling's makes there plates very huge, so come hungry. One more thing, if Oyster chicken isn't your thing....try the crispy gau gee with Vegetables or Beef broccoli with cake noodles. read more

Came here because my go to chinese spot was closed. Second time eating here but I don't remember it being this bad. First of all, opened my container of shrimp Canton and they poured the sweet and sour sauce all in there making my food soggy with all of the sauce on the bottom. The shrimp canton itself was good but who Does that? You're supposed to Keep the sauce separate especially if it's to go or atleast ask the customer. My broccoli in the beef broccoli was so soggy too. It was weird. I always eat it at leungs and it never tastes so squishy like that. Nothing good about the fried rice either. Ugh. I was told it would be about 5-10 minutes && I waited almost 30 minutes for my order! Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. The worker's attire is not pleasing as well. Very very slow service. I ordered saimin, 1 piece of lup cheong, 1 piece of fried won ton, and a sprite. That came up to about $8; not bad. I ate in. I cut up the piece of lup cheong and put it in my saimin. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but that's probably my fault. The saimin noodles were a little over cooked (mushy), but tasted good. I liked that there were 3 different kinds of cabbage (and a lot of it!) in the saimin for garnish. I was sad that there was no green onion included. There were a few pieces of char sui in there, but they didn't really taste like anything. I have to say that the fried won ton was really good. I noticed that a lot of people were ordering fresh take-out entrees rather than selecting items already out to make up a plate. I thought it was weird that some of the ready-made items were filipino-looking like pork and peas, and adobo. When I walked in I could smell lemon chicken. OK so this place is good for basically one main thing. Crispy Chicken! Any kind is good...Oyster, lemon, orange. They are all awesome. I've tried a few other dishes and they are hit or miss. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE today. Food is good but i can't stand when workers are rude or have no customer service skills. Called in a take out order, young girl on phone helpful. Walk in to pickup food, Girl helping seated customers, 20 something ur old heavy set Chinese boy with glasses sluggishly walking around the place in slow motion, doesn't even address me at all. He walks back from dropping off a saimin to customer and just stands there staring at me...no greeting of any kind. So i just stare back assuming he will eventually say how may i help you...nope! So i say i ordered a plate. Still no words. He rings up my total and quotes me, that's the only words he said. I grab my food and he turns away, no thank yous or anything. Dear Lings owners, i don't know if this is your son or grandson etc....don't put him behind the counter to service your customers if you want your customers to return....i told him thank you and still no response...so before the steam flew out of my ears i told him....learn to say thank you to your customers.
