We've been coming here for the many years. We loved the buffet, but sadly it's gone so we ordered the Thali plate. Got the goat and chicken thali plates. Most of the dishes were good, butter chicken, nice tandoori chicken and the pakora was soft and somewhat lukewarm. The dal tasted off, but can't say why exactly. Goat and chicken mains were still good. We went on Sunday afternoon, no one was there, the place was very dark and quiet. Not the best restaurant ambience unless you like dining without disruptions. Unfortunately, there was lack of table service, no checking on food or replenishing of water. Pretty disappointing to return to what use to be one of our favorite restaurants. Came for dinner on a Monday night, so it was not that busy! Got seated right away. Interior was dark and moody, and the tables were a bit sticky. The menu had many options, and we weren't quite sure what to get. Settled on the chicken tikka masala, lamb saag, and a side of garlic naan. Both entrees came with a plate of plain rice. The lamb saag was good, the meat was really tender and broke apart easily. However, in my opinion, the overall dish lacked seasoning. The chicken tikka masala was very watery and even then, the chicken tasted dry. Garlic naan was fragrant, but not fluffy. Overall, I'm sure there are better spots for Indian in the area. read more

I had the Chicken Thali that had tandoori chicken and such a great variety of curry, chutney, a dessert and was overall amazing. They tend to make their dishes mild in spice so I ordered mine medium and still didn't seem very spicy but it was so delicious it didn't matter. Ah! This place gave me chills. It seemed like this place has been there for years together. You know the food is not great when you don't see Indians and see hispanics with white people running the business. The place was dark and moody, it was not that clean and could see all the mess around. The place had good number of people, could be tourists. We went with Veg thali and non veg thali. The thali was good, the standard chicken butter masala, roti and naan. The sambar was decent too. Looking at the thali I ordered chicken biryani for a to go. Big mistake - The biryani was filled with cardamom and we had to do some easter hunting for the chicken barely any. The flavor was so bad, I would ask for a refund. I've been going here for many years and just realized I had never reviewed it. I really miss their lunch buffet, but there is a ton of food provided with their THALI lunches. And the price is the same as a single entrée at the food carts in the nearby Beaverton Round. Each of the items is delicious in their own way, and together they make very satisfying and extremely filling meal. This has been my go-to for Indian food for over 20 years. We ordered over $110 worth of food from door dash and picked it up. There was a big flyer that said naan not included on orders from delivery sites which was a bit lame but whatever. The samosas were fine and palak paneer were good. The tandoori chicken, chicken biriyani and chicken tikka masala all had the driest chicken. It was hard, dry and chewy if that's even possible. It almost tasted old. One of my favorite pre-Covid activities was going to Swagat for the lunch buffet. For me, being able to try a little bit of everything is a treat. Then Covid hit and buffets were no longer cool, so I waited for Swagat to reopen their buffet; but the craving for Indian food was real, so I gave in! Instead of a buffet lunch, they now serve 3 different set (Thali) lunch plates: vegetarian, chicken and goat. You can order other items on the menu if your heart tells you to. We ordered the chicken and the goat set meals and I was pleasantly surprised how pretty the presentation was. You get your main dish with salad, rice, and 3 little bowls of curries and two dessert bowls (yogurt and mango) all presented on a big round tray. They also serve you fresh naan bread on the side as well, which made me very happy. There were actually quite a lot of food so we both took a good amount of left overs to go. I've eaten here before as well as their location on NW 21st in Portland but had not been back to this location for years. We came on a Saturday night. The food was as good as ever, including the palakh paneer, which is our favorite. The service was incredibly slow and inattentive. It took several minutes for a waiter to even come our way with menus. As we sat there, another member of the wait staff loudly put together silverware in cloth napkins a couple tables away. That should be done outside of customer earshot. The server we had was friendly but there just does not seem to be a good system here. read more

I gave the person behind the bar my name and he immediately gave me a bag that I realized was not mine. My food was then 40 minutes late. I realized they were busy and there was a mixup, but there was no genuine apology or offer to give me any kind of discount. The frustrating thing is, full disclosure, I loved the food and would give them five stars for that. It looks like a nice atmosphere that I would like to dine in with my family next time, but I probably won't because the bad taste I have in my mouth from the service remains despite their delicious chicken vindaloo. This is my first time at the Beaverton location and also with a big group (19 people!) for a birthday dinner (on a Friday night too!) I will say even though there were some mix-up with our reservation, the staff handled it like pros and were very attentive, efficient, and accommodating. Very impressed! From the outside, it looks like a regular house with a tiny parking lot in the back - you're probably better off parking along the street anyway. They have a big waiting room with couches in the front which was nice since they have lots of takeout traffic and people waiting for a table. They had a big table in one half of the room for most of our group and 1/3 of the group (the teenagers) were seated across which worked out well. They also had more seating in the back where the restrooms are. The walls were decorated with beautiful wood Indian artwork and paintings. The pricing for food is very reasonable for the portion and the quality you get. We got the assorted vegetable pakoras for appetizer to share - they were light and crispy, the perfect starters. Most of entrees can be ordered A La Carte or the option of their Tahli dinner which came on a big tray with additional sides served with your entree. Our group all got many different things but I got the Lamb Kirai - my goodness they certainly did not skimp on the lamb because I had soooo many pieces of tender lamb but boy did it have that secret burning heat! My mouth was on fire but it was so delicious I couldn't stop eating it! The portions were generous so I did end up taking half of my food home to enjoy later. We ordered below 4/5 - Samosas - these were decent to taste. 3/5 - Chicken tikka masala - very standard curry and nothing over the top. You definitely can eat better in other places. The chicken was also bit bland. 2/5 - Moongdal lentil dosa. The dosa was okay but the accompanying chutneys were sour and lacked much needed flavor. My partner would eat here all the time, when she lived in Beaverton, but this is my first-time having food here. My partner is celiac and cannot have gluten at all, including any cross-contamination that may occur. For that reason, I would note that we did not have the papadum and sauces which come with the meal to start because, although they are gluten-free, they are put in the same fryer as gluten items. However, we were notified of this immediately by our waitress, which was super helpful to us in our ordering. She also made sure to let us know which dishes would not be safe for her to eat, specifically the ginger chicken curry (which she also noted would be the spiciest). What we chose to have was the chicken tikka masala curry, the chicken vindaloo, and the tandoori chicken tikka masala. All of these came with a side of basmati rice. We chose not to go with the thali dinner option, as we didn't want the naan (I chose to eat gluten free myself so that we could share and I wouldn't accidentally contaminate the shared dishes). The tikka masala curry was, by far, our favorite. It was rich and thick, with big chunks of chicken that went well with the rice. The chicken vindaloo was good, thicker and more earthy in flavor, but we had some left over for later, which was good. Neither of these dishes was very spicy. The tandoori chicken tikka masala came on a steaming hot cast iron tray, with a slice of lime. The lime was so hot that it burned my fingers a bit when I tried to squeeze it, so I had to give it a bit to cool down. I didn't mind that at all, just something to note. The kabab came with a side of rice and a sauce, which was tangy and good, but a little thin. The chicken itself was spicy and came on a bed of onions with a couple of cucumber slices, for cool down. We enjoyed all of this and, with the three dishes, we took home about half of the kabab chicken and a small amount of the vindaloo. Everything was hot and came out quickly and we were satisfied upon leaving, so there's not much more I can say about that. The decor was incredibly, with some incredible relief panels and paintings in the rooms, gorgeous hardwood floors, and very nice lighting. My family and I agree that the Beaverton location is consistently better than the NW Portland location. People come from miles around to this Swagat location. We all miss the pre-Covid lunch buffet, however they have lunch specials for $13.95 to $15.95 with many side dishes. The Tandoori Chicken is fresh, moist and plentiful. The Chicken Tiki Masala is wonderful too. If you order the dinner, it comes with naan , sides and mango pudding for dessert. idlis were fluffy and Sambar was alright. Rest of the food was very mediocre. Pakoras were served cold, dosa was mushy, naan was undercooked. Lunch Thalis were beautifully presented but the taste wasn't great. Service was very terrible though I think it was unique to our table. Other tables with non-Indian diners were being served promptly. Our food arrived cold, water was lukewarm and tables that got seated after us were getting served first ‍ What a shame, probably the best decorated Indian restaurant after Bollywood Theater in Portland. This time I got mango juice which is by far the freshest mango drink I had this summer and their combo meals are the best. I have tasted all three ( veg, chicken and goat) combos and they are really good. I really liked their Palak paneer from veg combo, Chicken curry from chicken combo. The tandoori chicken is least of my favourites. I don't like the artificial color on it. I ordered butter chicken and I think they literally forgot to put seasonings in it. It had ZERO flavor, I'm not being dramatic. It tasted like nothing. I was almost a little concerned. I came here with some coworkers for a working dinner. The service was super friendly (Lisa was our server) but pretty slow. The restaurant is quiet and comfortable, in an old house. The food, when it came, was fresh and tasty. I ordered a mango lassi (perfect), and we shared veggie samosa, tandoori salmon, chicken saag, and lamb pasanda. Everything was rich and vibrant, and the fish was cooked perfectly! There was a woman sitting on a little stool right in front of us who saw us ALL walk in, but when she finally stood up & acknowledged anyone, she chose to seat everyone before us, including the people who walked in after us... Server & bus boy were both confused as there was clearly no communication between the owners (who were helping serve & take orders) & staff. Staff expressed how unhappy they are, understandably. We have eaten take out four times from Swagat and it is consistently delicious. We will continue to choose this restaurant for Indian after our local joint closed up on Williams. We are lovers of the lamb saag, curry chicken, the lamb samosa, chicken tikki masala, the rice dessert is sooo yummy I should get two next time. However, I have tried to order take out from this place on 4 different occasions and they NEVER answer their phone. It just rings non-stop which is frustrating. It took another 8-10 to get service at the table, but once we did, everything came out promptly from there. We liked the papadoms and dips, and the vegetable samosas were crispy and tasty. I asked for my lamb vindaloo extra spicy, and it came with a nice building heat but not scorching. The curry flavor was great with the juicy lamb. When asked why, the waiter informed that food is catered more for the american audience. I have to say I was disappointed with my lunch at Swagat. They are still without the buffet, but have lunch specials (2 choices) each with a variety of small dishes. One was with chicken and the other with goat curry. I chose the goat, and everything looked awesome when it arrived. Disappointment set in when I took the first bite of my goat curry. It was too salty to eat. Period. Inedible to both my lunch partner and me. The rest was o.k. but nothing to write home about except for the awesome naan. I must also say the service doesn't deserve a good score either. You could tell the owner was skimping on help. The two dudes in the front had to do it all and were running. But everything took too much time and nobody checked to see if we were got; thus I couldn't tell them I couldn't eat the featured dish.
