For your wait they have some light food on the side. Sushi and soup. The sushi is loaded with rice so you shouldn't eat too much of it. The soup is pretty good and always hot. I've heard the lunch prices here are good, but I've only ever been for dinner. It's become a regular staple for when my husband and I don't want to cook and we're craving food that's not too expensive. It works like most buffets: grab a plate, load with veggies, meat, noodles or rice, then get a small bowl for your sauce choice. My advice to you is to add ginger and garlic to your sauces (and maybe even experiment with your sauce combinations too). The food always comes out quickly and is piping hot. What really sets this place apart from most buffets is the incredibly hospitable service... I don't know her name, but we're always seated by the same lady at the front desk, who also delivers the food, checks up on water, and makes sure you don't need anything else. One night we were in pretty late and they were out of sushi at the buffet (not sushi sushi, like California rolls and the like, but not bad for a buffet), which wasn't a big deal. She noticed that I had been looking for it and asked if I wanted some freshly made for us, and brought out a whole selection! This restaurant just took over the spot that used to be Pitstop Pizza and before that Backyard Burger. The atmosphere is much nicer, although it is still casual. The service was exceptional. The food is not surprising - it is Mongolian barbeque after all - but the quality was above average. Also I like that they had three types of mushrooms. Compared to Green Bowl downtown this place is superior in all respects - fresher ingredients, better service, much easier (and cheaper) parking and maybe even less expensive. My husband and I go to Chen's about once a week, we love it so much. It is never too crowded when we go around lunch time or early dinner. The decor is nice, and there are always lots of veggie options - you can fill your plate with whatever veggies, noodles/rice, meat/seafood, and choose your sauce. My only request is that they have more sauces to choose from, such as a Pad Thai sauce or other peanut sauce. They have a Thai sauce that I usually mix with the Mongolian sauce which is really good, but other than the Mongolian sauce most of them are too spicy. They also have a cold bar with sushi and fruit, salad, and pudding and a soup station as well. Their miso soup was very good, but the wonton and egg drop were about average. The sushi is nothing to write home about and I never get it anymore, but I do get some fruit with each meal. My favorite thing about the place is how fresh all of the ingredients are, and that you know exactly what is going into your meal. :) I can't rave enough about it! read more

Not much to complain about. The sauces were all packed with flavor. They have a good variety of vegetables and meat to choose from. But for my taste I wish the cook would let the meats and veggies char on the grill more. He uses a lot of water and is steaming everything. But like I said that's my preference. And I don't know since I'm not from here but for the employees to be sitting at a table in the dining room and peeling shrimp and making shrimp skewers it was a bit strange. They always have a full stocked ingredient bar with 8-10 delicious sauce options. The family who runs the place is super sweet & attentive. There are lots of vegetables, your choices of meats and proteins, noodles, rice, and different sauces. After you fill up your plate with what you want, you hand it to the cook at the grill and they will cook your plate. It's pretty cool. There's lots of options. You might want noodles with broccoli, peas, carrots, chicken and a sweet sauce the first time and then go back up for rice with onions, zucchini, tofu, shrimp, beef and spicy sauce...and then keep going back up. You get to choose what you want on the plate. From raw to grilled, with your choice of sauce drizzled on top. Good quality and good price for all-you-can-eat. In case you've never done a Mongolian BBQ before, you go down a buffet line with a plate and fill it with all the raw ingredients of your choosing; vegetables, meats, pasta, rice, sauces, etc. Then they take your plate, cook it, and deliver it to your table. This creates a unique dining experience as your meal will be as good as you make it. That being said, my 4-star rating is based upon the variety of options, the quality of their ingredients, the upkeep of the location, and how it compares to other Mongolian BBQ places I've been to. I've been here a few times before and it's quickly becoming a tradition of mine to come here as I leave town on Sundays whenever I come visit PSU. The thing that got me here in the first place, and I think it's important, is the fact that I've never seen it packed. While every other restaurant has extremely long waits on Sundays as people leave town, I get sat here immediately every time. The staff is friendly and appropriately attentive. I've never had a conversation with any of them and they don't necessarily go out of their way to be super friendly, but I always feel welcomed and appreciated as a patron. As I write this review, my drink has been refilled numerous times. The place itself has always been very clean every time I've been here. Spills on the line are common since it's the customers who are serving themselves, but they always get cleaned up right away. Chairs and booths are in great shape; as are the tables. The bathroom has also always been properly cleaned; this is a huge plus in my book. The ingredients on the buffet line are top notch compared to other places I've been to and the selection is great. I'm very impressed by the variety of meats you get to choose from. Most places just have chicken, pork, and beef to choose from. Chen's expands on that by also offering BACON(!!!), sausage, squid, and others that may not always be available. The vegetable selection is above average; they have everything you'd expect plus a few welcomed surprises. They also have over 10 sauces to create your own unique flavor. Aside from the buffet line, they also offer soups, basic sushi rolls, desserts, and a couple of other things I usually skip over. But it's great that they offer it. The price is very fair. Sunday afternoons, I pay roughly $13 per person (no drink). For an all-you-can-eat experience of this caliber, I'm very happy with that price. This is definitely one of my favorite places in town and a true hidden gem as most people don't know it's here. If you're looking for a good meal, but don't want to wait a lifetime just to be seated, definitely come to Chen's! read more

The egg drop soup was really good too. Deserts and sushi - didn't have any, but the options are there. Cons: Maybe not quite as high quality as green bowl. The cabbage wasn't super crispy. While you're waiting for your piping hot and fresh food to cook you can eat some soup and sushi. The dessert bar could leave much to be desired, but come on.. Food is ok. Pretty much what you'd expect from a chinese owned buffet. The only ingredient they have that stands out are the shiitake mushrooms. I've eaten here twice and on the second time, they replaced the shiitake mushrooms with another type without changing the name on the sign. I was very disappointed. Next time I go, I'll have to call to make sure they have what I want. Edit: Dropped them from 3 stars to 1 star. Tried to use their coupon and they complained they couldn't unless I paid in cash. Well I don't carry cash with me all the time so I had to use my credit card. There was another coupon that was $5 off of $25 which they allowed credit card payment for but my total was ~$24. I asked if I could buy an eggroll so it will bring my total up to $25 so I can use the coupon but they refused. They seem extremely rigid and refuses to cater to customer needs. I am a repeat customer but they treated me like an out of towner. Customer service is lost to them in a customer service industry. This is the last time I will visit this place. I have a severe shellfish allergy and carry an epi-Pen. Today while having lunch at Chen's, I was in line behind a customer putting shrimp on their plate. The shrimp juice splashed into the other sauces, cross-contaminating them. Therefore I could not add any sauce to my own dish without risk. I told the manager about this and she got me fresh sauce from the back but didn't replace the sauces on the bar. The shrimp on the bar is placed next to sauces and other meats. It's in an ice water bath and prone to splashing into nearby ingredients. I also request they do not stir fry my food near plates containing shrimp. Otherwise the food is good.
