First, the food. I lived in Korea for a couple years so I like real Korean food. Some items on the menu aren't Korean, but the ones I've tried are very authentic and delicious. I ate there twice in a week just to try different items. The pin chons (2 types of kimchi, odeng) were delicious and a great complement to the meal. The kimchi chigey and denchang chigey were piping hot and so perfect. I would've devoured it quickly had it not been so hot, which is good. I can't wait to try more! Now, the service. It was fair at best. I was seated quickly and ordered without a problem. I got a water and then later the food was delivered. That was it. Twice. I understand if it's busy (which it was yesterday) but it wasn't that busy! And today it was dead and I still didn't get a refill of my water or a check up. The waitress was nice though, so it's hard to be frustrated. The ambiance is fine. It's clean and spacious with limited parking but that's not a big deal. Overall I gave it a 4 but the service is probably closer to a 2 or 3. I'd still eat here just because of the food. read more

I LOVE the aesthetic of this place, the lighting is really nice on the eyes and I'm a sucker for neon lights. Cost is about $15-20 per person, with huge portions and consistently delicious food. I've been here a few times now and have never left feeling unsatisfied or hungry. I've heard some say it's not authentic, but regardless, the food is great and I haven't yet had a bad experience. Kimchi was a place I use to go in the "before times" quite often. Since COVID they've had weird hours or were takeout only. The restuarant is in a good location with tight parking and access during busier hours. I recently visited during lunch and was happy to learn they've started operating during more "normal" hours and are open for lunch everyday except Wednesday. Pricing has risen with most dishes in the $16-$20 range. This usually involves quite a lot of food with various extras of pickled pork, kimchi, etc. The restaurant is generally clean with good service. I've tried several dishes over the years and have always enjoyed their offerings. My recent visit I tried the spicy pork and really enjoyed it. The place was good, there was no wait when we got there and were able to sit down and get served rather quickly. The food also came out in a good time with not too long of a wait. We tried a bunch of their dishes and weren't blown away by any of them. The teriyaki was thick and overly sweet, the dumplings were too thick and the dipping sauce lacked flavor. The restaurant only opens certain time frames during the week so my fiancé and I try to make time to visit this place after hearing lots of good reviews. We ordered Gamjatang, which does not appear on the website's menu but it was on the physical one at the restaurant. Also ordered LA Galbi as well. The portion for these two dishes is good enough for 2 people in my opinion. The Galbi is marinated well and really tasty. I tried Korean soup at many places and some places, the soup is either too salty or too spicy. I like to report an extremely alarming incident that occurred at the Kimchi restaurant in State College, Pennsylvania (1100 N Atherton St). We dined at this restaurant on January 6, 2023, and had an argument with the same waitress who used a floor mop to wipe the table, while the manager and owner turned a blind eye. His improper conduct happened on many occasions, as corroborated by the waitress and by multiple of my friends. Therefore, we denounced her behavior to the management, who responded that the waitress's carelessness released her from accountability under the owner's and manager's employment responsibilities. In addition, several quarrels and disagreements occurred between the waitress and the patrons. Nonetheless, the management and the owner disregarded all of the concerns without explanation. I am quite worried about the possible disagreements that might lead to an escalation of the situation. For the benefit of the hygienic health and safety of the clients, you are urged to investigate the sanitization and background of this establishment. read more

What a major disappointment! The photo does it justice. The pork was pork rib instead of backbone trotter, and thus no flavor. Other than the rib, there was potato and 3 slivers of scallion- NOTHING ELSE! No greens, perilla leaves, ground sesame seeds, etc... Ate lunch here with a friend when they offered a full buffet (they may not have that anymore). We arrived on a Sunday morning and it was deserted - most of their potential clientele might have been attending church or hungover. Food was tasty to my tastes, but do try it yourself! The service was friendly and very accommodating to my vegetarian diet. The food was tasty, I got tofu dolsot which came out sizzling and paired perfectly with the sauce. It should be noted that while ordering my waitress made sure that I knew what foods we're and we're not vegetarian. This is wonderful because I didn't have to question if the meal actually fit into my diet. Although the dish I ordered could range from.not spicy at all to sort of spicy the menu contained a variety of dishes for any taste preference. I would say this could suit both a spicy food lover and a casual veggies and beef diet. This was my first time having Korean food in a restaurant since a Trip to South Korea last year and my dish reminded me of tasty bibimbap I ate in various restaurants around Seoul. Along with the order were a few extra little side dishes, kimchi (which the waitress made sure I knew was not vegetarian), fishcake, pickles and beansprouts. I will absolutely be returning to eat here as often as possible, as the price is comparable to any other restaurant. Meat type/texture did not...If ur from a place wit a lot or decent number of krns ull know what im talkin bout. Spicy Pork ($15)- Tasted fine id order again. Vegetable JapChae ($11)- Never had japechae cost so much but it is what it is. Tasted pretty much the same but its warm/cooked which is kinda new...usually u get it cold and as a banchan for free. Today I have visited this place for the second time. I ordered vegi gopdol and vegi tofu soup. I was able to see they are really dedicated to maintain the food qualities. All of the side dishes were fresh made. Nice tofu soup and gopdol. Vegis were fresh without dried pieces. If you are looking for the spicy food with great quality, this is the place. Not long ago, the waitress followed to my car to ask me if I liked the service. I said ye, and she replied: "so why just a 10% tip"??? I told her that I thought it was appropriated for my party of 2 people. On another occasion, I asked for more fish cakes and offered to pay for it. They waitress said two rounds and thats it. One of the best lunch places in State College! Their salmon teriyaki lunch box is one of my favorites and a great deal! Note that it's only available during the weekdays for lunch time, which I think is 11-2:30pm. Their ginger tea is also amazing. I need to eat here at least once every week. read more

When I visit a Korean restaurant, I look forward to the variety of banchans (side dishes) that will accompany my meal. The few times that I visited, the banchans were identical and off the mark. The same 4 dishes were offered: bamboo shoots, cucumbers, bean sprouts and a dish of sliced fish cake. Where's the kimchi, steamed egg and other delicious banchans? The entrees were A-OK. As usual for SC, the prices are a little higher than you may find in any metro area. Recommend: LA galbi (grilled beef shortribs), seafood pajun (seafood pancake) and japchae (clear noodle stir fry, noodles are made from sweet potato starch). Tip: do NOT order iced tea here. The nice thing about owning a property in NW PA is that I get to drive up there and I often go through State College. As a funny aside, I considered going to Penn State to be an engineer (the recommended career choice for me per my guidance counselor in 1986). But I found out that an ex-boyfriend was going there to be an engineering major. I didn't think I could be around him (to semi-quote that cowboy, "I just couldn't quit him") so I ended up going to Indiana University to become an opera singer. Go figure. But, if nothing else, 1) I was mad that he stole my idea and 2) it created an intrigue about what it was like to be in State College. So, 20 years later, now's my chance. :) On my last trip from Warren to Harrisburg, I ended up in State College around dinner time. I had the toddlers and my mom with me so something interesting was a definite necessity. We often passed Kim Chi but we never had a chance to stop in. This was finally the chance. I even had to call the hubby and rub it in since he had been curious. The ambiance is nice, much more upscale than I expected based on the exterior appearance. We were greeted quickly and shown to a seat. The other patrons were all speaking Korean so I immediately though that I was on to something with potential. I have to be honest. I'm pretty cheap when it comes to some things, so I was a bit surprised to see the prices of the menu items in a college town. This must be the place that professors, parents, and kids on trust funds frequent. They weren't that outlandish, they just weren't "college student friendly". I opted for something I never order, the Grilled Spicy Pork ($13.99). It was tender and tasty. The portion was so large that (even avoiding the rice) I was unable to finish it all. The menu shows it as having two chili peppers (to indicate heat) but I didn't find it spicy at all. Then again, I like my tongue to be in fire. My mom, who doesn't like very spicy food opted for the Chicken Japchae ($9.99). I didn't get a bite, but she was very, very happy and said that the flavors were fantastic. It was well cooked and I have to compliment them on actually having it look like a Korean dish. Too often it comes out looking like something you'd find in a Chinese fast-food establishment. Her soda was $1.69. The Kazakh cuties split a kid's meal of Chicken Teriyaki ($6.99). I was more than enough for them and the chicken was nicely cooked. I was really happy to see that the chicken had a nice teriyaki glaze. I hate it when the kid's dishes are basically desserts with a hunk of chicken in the middle. This teriyaki had flavor and it wasn't goopy or too sweet. The kids really liked it. They also enjoyed the soup that came with our dishes. It was very mild but intriguingly flavored since there wasn't much evidence in the clear broth of what had been used to season it. Finally, the ban chans (those little side dishes) were pretty good. To me, they're the most exciting part of the meal. They were adequate. Nothing too exotic. The kids loved the cold mashed potatoes with peas and carrots. I loved the mung beans - they tasted a little different from all of the ones I've had before. The kim chi and the other chili-spiced items were not that spicy. I wish they had something a little more exotic - like fish cakes or dried fish - but what they gave us was good. The service throughout the meal was top notch. The request for a second plate so that kids could split wasn't forgotten. Our drinks stayed refilled. After the kids polished off the cold potatoes with a gluttonous glee, our server quickly asked us if we would like another serving. Our plates were also removed when empty. More importantly, the server didn't try to take plates with food still on them (regardless how little). That is one of my major pet peeves. I'd definitely stop there again. The total for two hungry adults and two toddlers was $34.62 (with tax) plus tip. Not too bad. Their menu has a lot of other options. The next time I'm there at lunch time on a weekday I'm definitely stopping in for a lunch box. They sound good and are only $6.99. I also love bibimbap and kimchi jigae (the pork and kimchi soup my husband gets for me when I have a cold). They are also on my list of things to try. read more

Kimchi is a fine Korean restaurant in State College, Pa. We stopped in for lunch after camping a few weeks ago. We were seated and given menus right away. There were a few other tables filled with patrons, but for the most part it was empty. They have a wide variety of traditional dishes available, my wife and I chose our favorites: Jampong (a spicy seafood & noodle soup) and Bibimbap dolsot. Prices are reasonable compared to other Korean establishments in the NYC area, however I'm assuming that the average broke college cant afford to eat here too often. I've had two experiences when the servers were extremely rude - judging customers in front of their faces and being extremely slow because they kept chatting and texting. They also discriminated us because we are not American born Asian - like they literally said it out. I have always stopped here each Memorial Day weekend. The food was always great and the owners very accommodating. BUT, This last visit I was really disappointed. They close at 10pm so my party and I arrived at 9:31pm. They refused to seat us. Said that the kitchen was closing and offered us take out instead. WOW!!! The owners were not there just the two waitresses, I asked about the owners and they said they didn't know. I am sure that if the owners were there we would have been seated. I have NEVER known a Korean to ever turn away another Korean. So again, this took me by surprise I have a party of four. Some of our friends were seated 5min prior to us getting there. But all this aside come on 9:31 you close at 10pm. You are off my list. But for all of you folks that are interested, the food is good, and they do a nice job of setting out some good side dishes. Kimchi is not on the GPS, but I found it here. I would say it's as good as you can get outside of NYC or LA. The decor is similar to the big Korean restaurant in large cities. Only thing I didn't see is they don't have table grills, all BBQ grilling done in the kitchen then bring out on hot plate. I ordered the seafood pancake, which is very large for it's price. It could be shared by 2-4 people, I ate half and boxed the other half to take back to the hotel. I also ordered Spicy Galbi Jim (steamed beef short ribs in spicy sauce with rice cakes, radishes, carrots). The flavor is also little bit on the sweet side, but it's a good balance of spicy and sweet. The large chunks of short ribs have been steamed very tender, the large chunks of radish and carrots are also tender.
