In our effort to support more small Black owned businesses, we trekked it out to Bed Stuy to have dinner at Cheri's. Cheri's dishes out classic Southern dishes: Fried catfish, fried chicken (& waffles during Brunch), and all the classic sides: mac, greens, sweet potato, mashed potato, etc. The beau got the fish. I got the chicken. We got the greens, "smashed" potatoes, and mac. I can't speak on the fish but my fried chicken was good: cooked thoroughly but still juicy, though a bit bland. The sides severely lacked flavor and freshness. The potatoes tasted sour. The greens were overly sweet (for my palate). And the mac was DRY as bone. Despite these major mishaps I still give Cheri's 2 stars for juicy chicken and a friendly and homely ambiance. I would be willing to give Cheri's another try in hopes that this was just an off Saturday night. read more

So the food was so/so. I ordered fried whitings but didn't taste any fish, just breading. It was fried HARD. Disappointing bc you expect nice soft whitings. The sides were pretty good such as the Mac, grits, & yams. I'll still go back because it's an overall a vibe. Let me start by saying I was starving like starving I got dressed walked my boyfriend and I walked to this place I was so excited to try the food at this hidden gem, ordered steak and garlic potatoes and house salad,sticky shrimp, appetizer arrived after the dried up entree with running potatoes paprika to cover the tastelessness of the plate, advertising as a hidden gem more of a tasteless gem, the worst food I when ever ever ate in my life and I am a store manager in food cucumbers are soiled yet being served, This is not meant to be an exaggeration just me informing everyone on my experience at this restaurant this food. The food was delicious. I see why they have their crowd. The food gives you that home cooking that warms your soul. Service could have been better. I didn't like that they gave the food in glass plates but gave you plastic utensils. Additionally, the mixed drinks were watered down considering it's already premixed. $15 for a premixed drink is a bit much for me. The ambiance was ok. My 1st visit to this restaurant was because I saw them on the news and was intrigued by the publicity . I went one Saturday evening and ordered in advance for pickup, the restaurant was cozy and quaint, the customer service and hospitality is amazing everyone greets you with a smile. I ordered fried fish, mac n cheese and collard greens, the fish was hot and crispy. The price was decent for that type of meal. I enjoyed the meal but will return to try the brunch. From the owner running the location aka grandma, to her son cheffing it up in the kitchen, to her little grand daughter greeting us by the door, and the relaxing music playing . Very very nice and pleasant people... it felt like home... a home you actually like going to. Food had that same home yet still restaurant quality food taste. I've been craving fried chicken but I didn't want to cook it myself and wasn't sure where to get it from. I was in the neighborhood so I went to Cheri's. The place was fine and had a few customers and they had a DJ playing some classic R&B; nice! I ordered the chicken to go but decided to have a glass of wine while I waited. I was surprised that my "glass" of wine was served in a12 oz. plastic cup and not a glass but I got over myself. I also ordered salmon croquettes as an appetizer. The food was prepared pretty quickly and I headed home for my 30 minutes drive. I was so hungry that I had to taste a salmon croquette. It was soooo good! I expected breading with a little salmon but I was wrong. I was packed with SALMON and very flavorful. At home I tasted the mac & cheese first. It was really good and firm (I don't like mushy mac & cheese). The greens were collards (I didn't see kale in it) and they were good except they were a little sweet. There was a small piece of cornbread in the plate and it tasted fine. The chicken which was still crisp 30 minutes later was perfect! It was seasoned well, not loaded with salt, and very tasty. I ordered brunch takeout since we had a long Saturday night. The food was fantastic. We started with the chicken and waffles. I'm a traditionalist so I appreciated the savory chicken legs. My date wanted to explore the creativity of the red velvet option with the waffles. They were creative, with a cake texture and she was very pleased. Really enjoyed the sautéed shrimp and grits along with the spice level of the accompanying Tabasco sauce. I went with a friend on a Saturday afternoon. It was empty, the waitresses were very friendly. We started with the buffalo wings- amazing! Not super spicy and kind of sweet. My friend ordered the salmon croquette meal and I had the shrimp with grits. My grits were absolutely delicious!!!! My friend tasted my grits and agreed! She enjoyed her meal as well. This place is a soulful slice of heaven on earth! The food is quite simply INCREDIBLE, and everything is cooked fresh to order and they don't even have a microwave, so you may wait a bit but trust me, it's so, so worth it. I got the salmon croquettes appetizer and the grits with cheese and fried prawns entree, talk about a WOW experience!! The prawns were perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection, and the grits were buttery and outstanding overall. The gentleman who waited on us (Keenan) was soooooo friendly and funny, he truly added extra value to our dining experience for sure. The house made rum punch was perfectly blended and super refreshing, chock full of seasonal fruits, you absolutely must try it! 3 stars for their IG posting. Makes you believe you need to be there for their brunch! I drove all the way there from the Bronx to give them a try. Unfortunately I didn't get to try anything. I walked in and the Wonsan that was at the front gave a lukewarm greeting (if I could even call it that). I asked to see the patio where they were seating guests...she pointed me in the direction (didn't walk me to the back) no worries, I found my way lol, just saying hospitality goes a long way ESPECIALLY when there was NO ONE in the patio!!! Empty! Not a soul! Of course I walked right back out. I won't return. Not saying you shouldn't give them a try, but just make sure that they have customers at the time you plan on going. It wasn't bad but wasn't worth the wait lol. Been trying to go here for weeks and once there the vibe was chill. The owner recalled us from when we been waiting for a while to try the food. Overall the food was alright nothing to go crazy for but definitely good. I ordered the red velvet pancakes and shrimp. Shrimps were well seasoned and I enjoyed all of them (a good amount). I'm so mad I didn't take a pic of the catfish. It was picture perfect and tasted just as good as it looks! The vibe at Cheri's Bed Stuy is modern rustic yet cozy. I felt absolutely comfortable in the space. The outdoor area is just as fly and even the bathroom was cute! Heard about this spot from a few coworkers, and as it's right by I figured why not treat my mom to a nice brunch. First thing that caught my eyes when I walked in was the art surrounding the walls. The beautiful paintings and the dim lighting provided a nice little ambience. We were given the option to sit in or outside. We initially sat outside and it's a nice setup back there. Very clean and well maintained. Unfortunately, the mosquitos were out in full force so we decided to be reseated inside. Our server, Yasmine, was very accommodating of that. She was also very nice and attentive. She made sure we had any and everything we needed and kept us up to date on the status of our orders. Speaking of our orders, the food did take a little longer to come out than I would have liked. It wasn't a tremendous wait time, but just long enough to have me wondering "ok. Where's the food at?" But once it came out, it was well worth the wait. Freshly made grits and eggs. Freshly made shrimp and fish. It was all so delicious. The increasing popularity caught them completely off guard. There were not enough staffs to digest traffic. I loved the DJ concept and ambience but they have to figure out how to speed up their serving process. I was exited about their fried chicken but what really wowed me was the waffles. It was moist and cooked just right. The fried chickens needed more seasoning. To be fair, I learned later the cook was sick so the owner cooked. Yummy, satisfying comfort food in a chic, cozy, space. Service is excellent. It's a true family business. Tory, the owner, is incredibly warm and attentive, and her mother and brother are the chefs. You will feel as though you've been welcomed into their home. The chicken and red velvet waffles are really tasty-- fantastically crisp skin on the chicken with juicy meat inside and the waffles were an indulgent spin on the classic.
