TL;DR version- Some high highs and some very low lows. Hot Figs was a fun app. By a mile, the soups were the favorites, so I would recommend the Pepián or Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo. Nice happy hour and a large chocolate drink selection I was at this unique Guatemalan (ish) restaurant a while back with one of my groups. I said "ish" because the menu has dishes from all over, ranging from sandwiches to BBQ ribs to Guatemalan and Mexican soups. It's out there, and even though not everything works that well, it's fun, and if you can't find something you want to order here, you probably shouldn't go out to restaurants. There was also live jazz music that night, which was loud but nice to listen to. Since it was happy hour, a bunch of us got drinks. I went with a maracuya margarita, which was decent; someone else had a jalapeño margarita, someone had a beer, and someone had a mojito. There were a few nice hot sauces on the table, with the red one reminding me of salsa macha as it had a smoky kick and a spicier green sauce reminiscent of ají verde. They gave us some complimentary blue corn chips and a very mild black bean dip, which was tasty enough and hard to complain about, as it was free. From the appetizers, we got the Hot Figs for $15.95, consisting of honey goat cheese, corn tortilla chips, and plum + pumpkin seeds. This was a unique and fun blend and reminded me more of something you would find in a wine bar. The mix of sweet and salty, with a bit of crunch from the seeds, was nice. This was good, and I would recommend it for a table rather than for a solo diner. There was also The Zingy Salad for $21.95, featuring zucchini spirals, yuzu, tomato, onion, cilantro, pumpkin seeds, and a jalapeño infusion. $18.95. The salad was fine with a bit of crunch and a mild spiciness. It was fine, though a bit wet, for lack of a better word. The best dishes of the night were the soups, which each had its own distinct flavor profile. My sight presence went to the Pepián for $21.95, consisting of chicken, pumpkin/sesame seeds, green tomatillo, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, carrots, chili coban/pasta/guaque, and potato + rice. There was plenty of tender chicken inside, with the soup having a nice roasted flavor with some spice and a bit of sourness. The potatoes and rice on the bottom added more sustenance to this dish. Almost equally delicious was the Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo for a dollar more with shredded chicken, tomato, black pepper, garlic, onions, peas, chickpeas, corn, achiote, chipotle, Monterey jack cheese, and crunchy blue corn tortilla chips. By comparison, this was a bit heartier, with the melted cheese and shredded tortilla chips inside, similar to soups found in Mexican cuisine. While I also liked the mix of veggies a bit more in this one, as it added a bit more texture, I still slightly preferred the flavor of the other soup, as I usually prefer a bit more spice. The rest of the food was fine. The TPC sandwich for $19.95 with chicken, peanut butter, coconut cream, ginger, cilantro, pickled carrots, and lime was fine. For the number of ingredients, I found it a bit sweet, likely from the cream and the peanut butter mix. The bread was nice, but it also fell apart. It came with a nice side salad with a good vinaigrette. The most expensive at $24.95 were the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, consisting of baby back ribs with rice and beans. The ribs were almost a bit too tender as they lacked any bite, which was nice, but the sauce was a bit too generic tasting, reminding me of Sweet Baby Ray's or something similar. The rice and beans were standard. This was also OK. Next came some dessert. There was first the $12.95 Rosemary Churros served with dulce de leche & chocolate dips. While I'm not sure if it worked, the rosemary did add a unique smell and a bit of flavor, and at least it wasn't generic. The churros themselves were hot, and the sauces were standard, with my preference being the dulce de leche. I also ordered a Champurrado for $7.95, which was fine. It wasn't as thick as I expected, though perhaps the style is a bit different than the champurrados I rarely buy from Mexican street carts. The chocolate flavor was very nice, though, and I like that it wasn't too sweet. Another person got a $4 Alfajor, which I got a bite of, which was standard. This place is a bit hard to rate. The two soups were wonderful, I liked the appetizers, and I found a couple of the other dishes just OK. Overall, it was a good meal, but I'm not craving to go back. This would be the perfect 3.5, but I'll round up as that doesn't exist. read more

On a warm spring day, a group of us headed over from the zoo to try out this restaurant. They had outdoor seating, a menu with gluten free options, and good reviews. Plus there was stuff that the 2 kids with us would eat. Our servers were lovely and helpful -- I had the Jocon (a flavorful chicken soup/stew), one person had a omelette, another had chicken, and an another wrap/sandwich. There were drinks -- coffee, hot chocolate, and something fruity. They also brought us corn chips and a bean dipping sauce to start -- YUM! When I lived in the neighborhood, I always wondered about this place but never went. Looking for a soup fix for my cold recently I ordered takeout, and was delighted by my meal! I got the huevos rancheros and the Caldo Tlalpeno Rojo soup. The huevos had a unique sauce, balanced with beans and cheesy bits and chips that were still crispy even after a long delivery period. The soup was flavorful and hearty, the chicken pairing nicely with the cilantro, onions, and lime. Neither was spicy, but both felt filling and were really tasty. I've heard it's really cute to eat in, so I'd go back for that. read more

I'm giving them three stars because overall the food was tasty with flavors not commonly found in spanish cuisines, however, I was not happy with the service. I found them to be slow, no utensils provided nor napkins, we had to ask when meal already served. They forgot to give us complimentary chips and it wasn't until someone else sat next to us that they got the chips that they realized we never received it. instead of two sauces, we only received one and was told the 2nd one was coming. The food was pricey, ie the hot chocolate. 7.95 per cup plus an extra 75 cents for almond milk. The place was quaint but with all of the Guatemalan decorations I expected more typical Guatemalan dishes rather than a fusion of American foods. Because of the distance, the experience was not worth it for me and unfortunately I will continue to look for another authentic Guatemalan cuisine near me. read more

Unique spot with inventive menu including Guatemalan hot chocolate and a variety of appetizers/entrees. Went for lunch and got a mocha (based on the Mexican hot chocolate), shrimp sliders, and tried the hot fig appetizer. The mocha seemed to be made of high quality chocolate and was perfectly bittersweet. The chimmichurri sauce on the sliders was tasty, as were the shrimp. The fig entree was good with a balance of sweet and savory with the goat cheese and tortilla chips it came with. The atmosphere is festive and the waiters were friendly and helpful. The music in the restaurant was a bit loud and the space isn't particularly insulated from the cold of the street during the winter, making it slightly less cozy that it could be. One of my favorite things to do when I visit my sister and everything go to the beach is going to the boardwalk and grabbing an order of alfajores. Unfortunately, when we went there were none currently made, so I missed out. I made it a mission to figure out another place nearby to grab alfajores from, and this place came on my radar! I walked in and saw it's a full restaurant with a bar. I walked right up to the register and placed my order. The alfajores are on display amongst their other baked goods, but I didn't recognize it because it looks so different. These alfajores have a whole coconut rim and kinda look like shaved coconuts from the outside... It's fascinating! The filling in them was familiar though, and so so delicious! They were obnoxiously crumby though, and so I had to be mindful about making a mess in my sister's car. If the dessert is a hint of how the rest of the menu is, it's definitely a treat. It's a cool looking restaurant specializing in Guatemalan food and drinks with indoor and outdoor seating. We rarely make it to Brooklyn- and when we do, there are so many great places to choose from it's hard to make a decision. Friends recommended this spot and we were pleasantly surprised. It was a vibrant, brightly lit and decorated restaurant. It's an interesting menu, blending a few types of cuisines. We started with a pitcher of sangria. There's something really special about Ix. It's a small Guatemalan restaurant in Brooklyn, and every inch of the space is filled with beautiful Mayan art--on the walls, in the corners, even above the counter. It feels like walking into someone's creative, vibrant memory of home. I used to stop in for breakfast--huevos rancheros and a mimosa were my go-to. The food was always solid and comforting. Sliders were delicious, especially the sauce, and we could've skipped the cheese dip. I tried one of the stews and it was good and filling. Nothing I would come back for. Be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation. But once you're seated, the service is fast and attentive. We went during a live music night, which was fun but a bit loud. My partner and I had heard of Ix from a neighbor who said this was "the good" Central American spot in the neighborhood (no shade at the other ones). Ix is nestled in a small complex of eateries right next to Lincoln Market, and offers coffee in the mornings. They are a cute little Guatemalan family joint that proudly displays their Mayan roots both in their food and on the walls and decor. The homey feel of the place is really evident and charming (sons and daughters as waitstaff). We have not both eaten here and taken out, and I would recommend either whole-heartedly. The traditional soups were recommended by the waiter so we got three of them -- all of them good and serving a different need (hearty, healthy, light). They were quite big and won't leave you hungry. Their desert plantains were also delicious, but don't mix up the mole's from Guatemala from Mexico, as they are different (we were told). All in all, a great place to eat in or take out, but on the Saturday night I came back for pick up, there was a live band playing sultry music in Spanish (language), which was pretty great. Came for the hot chocolate and was really impressed by the homey environment and lovely staff. This visit was solely for their Guatemalan style hot chocolate but oh man I am definitely intrigued to visit again for lunch if I'm in the area. The young lady at the register was kind enough to explain the variety of hot chocolates they offered. "IX" was the most "basic" flavor and how they made all the hot chocolates on the menu (it was used as their base). As you go down the line the combinations of toppings and additions change to give more flavor options. One included cornstarch to make for a thicker hot chocolate, another had ice cream to make it creamier, others had cinnamon or rosemary and other spices. I absolutely loved the customizability. My friend and I decided we'd just share one and the girl at the register was kind enough to put it into two separate cups for us without us even asking! I think because it was close to Christmas one of the employees was sprinkling pine all over the floor which made the restaurant so fragrant and so festive. What a gem of a place! read more

Preface - I came here for brunch, so I didn't try any of their Guatemalan or Mayan foods which looking back I kind of regretted. I was in the mood for chicken and waffles and got that. The chicken and waffles looked really pretty, it comes with a flower and 3 dollops of various fruit butters that make it look very instagramable! However, the taste itself was not that spectacular in my opinion. The chicken itself tasted like it could have been reheated frozen tenders. I started coming to Ix in 2015 because it was so close to one of my favorite yoga studios! It was more if a cafe back then, but I watched it grow over the years into what it is now: a full fledged restaurant with events and musical guests. The staff creates such a family environment, it doesn't take too many visits for them to start recognizing you. The food at Ix is hearty, satisfying and an absolute journey of flavor profiles that are difficult if not impossible to find anywhere else in the city. Why did it take this long for me to eat here? Please tell me! I 'saved' this restaurant in the hopes of going and it didn't happen til this weekend through a friend's recommendation. First off...everything was banging! Like errythang! So first we had the shrimp sliders and it was perfect. The bread was soft, the shrimp was tender and the chimichurri sauce was enhanced even more by their homemade hot oil. The huevos rancheros were calling my name! They whispered...Anyaaaaa and I answered the call by adding chorizo. The eggs were jammy and it was so damn good. I topped it with their creamy black beans, cotija cheese and sour cream. It was heavenly. My friends had the Green eggs Sandwich and raved about it. It had honey goat cheese, poached eggs, spinach and a green sauce. For drinks we had the lavender mimosa and I opted for the strawberry basil margarita. So so good. No artificial crap. Real lime juice and a tajin rim! For dessert we shared the dulce de leche churros. Oh my gosh. Y'all gotta have it. It was phenomenal! Hot filling in the center with this rosemary cinnamon brown sugar dusting and 2 dipping sauces. Make sure you dip it in both sauces, they enhance each other, and the only time you can double dip without getting a dirty look. Stop playing. Put your apps down. Put your empty pot down. So yummy! Their menu is so extensive, serving up mostly Guatemalan dishes as well as some unique fusion foods! My roommate and I shared the melted cheese with truffle mushrooms, and oh god it was cheese heaven. The truffle flavors came through strong and the cheese was just delicious. It came with blue corn tortillas, so we made a bunch of mini cheese wraps. I always face the endless question of whether I should order a sweet or savory breakfast, and this time, sweet won out. I got the French toast sticks, and I'm so glad I did. The sticks, fruit topping, and whipped cream were so yummy. I was pretty full from the cheese appetizer, so I was shocked when I looked down at my plate and realized I had eaten 3/4 of my French toast. It was just that good, I couldn't stop. I can't wait to come back and try more dishes! We definitely will be stopping by when the weather cools to try their Guatemalan hot chocolate. read more

I can't say enough good things about Ix. I went twice during my brief visit to Brooklyn recently. We stopped in for a snack one afternoon and had shrimp sliders and hot figs. Oh, my, how delicious. But even more fabulous was the Huevos Rancheros I had for breakfast the next day. I have never had a tastier plate of Huevos Rancheros, and I order it whenever I can, so I've had a lot to compare it to. I got it with avocado on top. It was fabulous! "Are these not the best chips and salsa you've ever had?" It may sound like hyperbole - but a few minutes into our sit down we were already inquiring if we can buy their house salsa to go (the answer is yes). I'm giving the house chips and salsa (both green and brown) a 10/10 all around. The cozy and cool ambiance of the space caught us by surprise. Coming from the hot Brooklyn streets, we were eager for the cool sandwiches our servers floated by to other tables, but the jazz lulled us into ordering two hot soups. We compromised with our indecisiveness by ordering a zingy salad to split. All entrees were a hit. The Caldo Tlalpeño Rojo reminded me of an extravagant bowl of tortilla soup. 10/10. The Pepian was also divine but more of an acquired taste in my opinion. If you like sesame, pumpkin, and cinnamon - this soup is for you. 8/10. The Zingy salad used zucchini in an exquisite and fresh way. The tangy yuzu brightened up the salad and allowed the sesame to cut through and bring in a unique twist. 9/10. As if Ix didn't already bring life to the phrase "mom and pop" - we were able to finish off our warm meals with some coffee from the in-house coffee shop. read more

This spot has been on my 2023 bucket list and I finally gave it a shot! The funny thing is that I was not intrigued so much by the food menu, but the drink menu, specifically champurrado was the trophy I was eyeing. I love chocolate! I love a good hot chocolate too, but a good Mexican hot chocolate is top notch, and champurrado is Mexican hot chocolate on crack! The champurrado at IX restaurant is thick, creamy, dark, rich, with hints of cinnamon and absolutely SINFUL! The masa is unnoticeable, but definitely there. A Guatemalan/Mexican oasis on a busy street. Honestly Ix is such a great restaurant for a night out with family and friends. The staff is incredibly kind and accommodating, and the inside and outside seating is comfortable, clean, and the ambiance is lovely. Inside we've gotten to enjoy dinner and drinks with live music our toddler loved. And outside is heated and covered from the busy Lincoln Road foot traffic. My favorite menu items are Black beans and chips Crazy corn in a cup Melted cheese with blue corn tortillas and loroco Caldo Ix (vegan) All soups can be made vegan and divided up which is amazing!!! And I've never had loroco (a vegetarian option) before but I'm so glad ix introduced me. The menu, the setting, and the staff all make this place special. read more

Met up with my friend at Prospect Park for a walk and she wanted to try their hot chocolate because she heard it was good. We were freezing cold and slightly hungry so decided to stop by and give it a try. There are 2 sides of the restaurant. The side for hot chocolate was Guatemalan, and since its covid there is only out door dining. We wanted to try everything and had a hard time deciding on what to order. There are variety of hot chocolates, soups and so much food! We ended up setting for the regular hot chocolate and 2 soups. This is where they cross the line and get 5 stars from us. We planned on splitting everything including 1 hot chocolate (which i bet can be annoying for restaurants) but the waiter was not only accommodating but they split everything in half for us including the soups! Maybe because it was covid, but it really made the experience amazing and hospitable even though we were freezing outside.
