The setup is a little different from a full-service restaurant. You order at the counter, let the staff know if you're dining in or getting your order to go. If dining in, then find a table and wait for your name to be called. If you're seated farther away, they'll usually bring your food to you. For drinks, it's best to stay near the baristas towards the front of the store since those are typically called out separately. I ordered the Madeline omelette without the jalapeños. It was good overall but it could have used a little more salt. I also tried the matcha latte (which tasted a bit too milky) and I had to add extra sweetener, so I'd probably try a different drink next time. The pastries, especially the apple strudel and Boston cream donut, were both really good. Highly recommend the apple strudel. read more

I ordered an avocado bagel on seven grain. It was all delicious. There was lettuce and cucumber that was not listed on the menu, but that's ok. The whole thing had a lemony flavor that normally I don't like, but it went well with the other flavors. Their sandwiches are upgraded coffee shop fare--the fried chicken biscuit was crispy, buttery, and had a little kick, though a bit too heavy on the cheese and lacking a sweet or fresh element in my opinion. It was too small to be a full meal but perfect for a light lunch. The wait time is that of a sit down spot, fine if you're not in a rush and are dining in. What a great little find in Brooklyn. It seems like just your average hole in the wall café, but it's so much more. The menu here is extensive with a lot of unique treats. While the line is long and moves quick, the staff was friendly and allowed us to take our time to make our order. It has some awesome bakery items, but also great breakfast and brunch items. You can get great coffee as well as delicious fresh blended juices and smoothies. The most surprising thing was just how beautiful and tasty the food was. They have quite an extensive menu, from breakfast/brunch to all day sandwiches and wraps as well as a ton of healthy drinks and smoothies. I opted for their Healthiest Tea ($5.95) which is usually served hot but I asked the staff if they could make it iced and it's fast becoming one of my favorite drinks of all time. A Cortelyou mainstay that has apparently gone through several renovations. So upon my latest visit, I'd forgotten I'd been there years ago. The menu is overwhelming when breakfast and brunch foods are your favorite meals. There are SO. MANY. delicious looking options, I suggest studying the menu before arriving. Their standouts seem to be the huge variety of breakfast bowls, not something I tend to see elsewhere in such number. But the classic platters, omelettes and sandwiches ALSO come in varied number. I haven't even begun to list the choices of unique combination lattes and the pastry display! (Seriously, if you're indecisive like me, study in advance!!!) Thankfully, I had a neighborhood regular with me to affirm my choice of Paul's Platter: the plate with a cheddar chive biscuit egg sandwich with spicy mayo and smashed avocado plus mixed greens sides. And it was exactly what I needed -- flavorful and umami rich without the need for meat, though altogether spicier than expected due to the spicy mayo and red pepper flakes in the avo. I also had the very grammable Rose Petal Latte that comes with crushed rose petals (!) and it was not overly sweet like I was fearing. Beware: choosing your milk type from the plentiful dairy and non-dairy varieties ALSO proved to be nearly one decision too many for me! Madeline is definitely a popular spot: seating inside, outside, and lots of pickup orders. My meal came quite quickly but, strangely, my friend's bowl only came after I was on the last bite of my food. Regardless, the food is too delicious to complain and the service as friendly and prompt as can be given the number of orders. The only downside is there's not a ton of shade on hot days like today and there's lots of street traffic from cars, buses, and trucks along Cortelyou. But like I said, Cafe Madeline has been here at least a decade, likely before this neighborhood exploded to levels I see now. And here's hoping they can continue to stay for the long long haul! read more
