I am fortunate to have family who live in Brookline, and we visit at least once a month. The one place that we make sure to hit up every time we are there is Cheryl Ann's. I am in love with Cheryl Ann, whoever she is. This place has the best challah I have ever had. It's pretty much the favorite challah of everyone in the family. It is soft, sweet, moist, rich; I do not want to know what goes in to it to make it so good. And their chocolate babka is ridiculously good. Gooey, rich, cakey - OMG it is AMAZING. We also love their rugelach - cinnamon-apple-raisin, apricot and raspberry are favorites. Interestingly, we don't care for their chocolate rugelach - it's a little dry. read more

Best around period. recently stopped opening at 6AM. AND changes to 7 A.M. I stopped by the Starbucks every morning with my English Bulldog and get a cinnamon frozen dough to go. Challah bread is what makes them famous but they have great thing all around. Morning people that work there are very nice even at 7 AM. lol read more

Best Challah that I've ever had. . . except when I've made it myself. I wish that they shipped their challah. I once asked them if they shipped to California and they said, sure, if you buy one and ship it there yourself. This is the only place in the area that I'd go for a black and white cookie. First, their enormous (though there is a mini version but why? If you're going to have a cookie, have a COOKIE! -- I usually end up saving some for later, but not always) and that's always a plus. The cookie is soft, buttery and sooo good. The frosting to cookie ratio, nearly always spot on. The apple turnovers are great. The Hamantashen are good. The cinnamon raisin bread is perfection. Really, I don't know why you'd want to try anywhere else when you're having a craving for jewish bakery craving... it may be a pain in the butt to get to, but it's so worth it. read more

The challahs are kept in their freezer. You never know if it's gonna be good or not. When they are fresh you are happy. Often times they are old and dry in a day. The marble sheet cake is the best thing they offer. read more

Does Cheryl Ann actually exist? Does it matter? Answer: no, to both questions, because the only things that matter at this little Putterham gem are the baked goods and the prices. Both are really, really good. Very briefly, Cheryl Ann's has some fo the best challah in and around the Boston area - it's their specialty and is about as good as can be found anywhere. That's not to slight the other baked goodies behind the counter. Cookies and pies are excellent, but for my money, the best value in the store has to be the apple-filled pastries. At just over $2 they're easily worth double that price. A very impressive bakery and certainly worth the trip for anyone around West Roxbury, Brookline, Jamaica Plain or Newton. Yummy. read more

Went to Cherly Ann's after hearing my friends rave about it. Their bubka (streusel like bread with raisins and cinnamon) and it's "to die for"...hard to each just one slice, very rich, but soooo delicious. Also bought a loaf of challah which I also thought was good. read more

Tried again after a 12-month hiatus. Never again! Plainly stated, about 98% of the time the products including the challah are not fresh. The challah and the pastries taste as if they were frozen. If not frozen then they are definitely old. When you go to a bakery you expect to get fresh baked goods not stale products. I've given them plenty of chances throughout the years and it's always the same. It's unfortunate because when their challah is fresh it's terrific. But good luck getting a fresh one! When I ask the clerk if the products were baked "today" or which ones were baked "today" I'm always told everything was baked today. For example, I purchased a bubbka to bring to a condolence call and was really embarrassed because it turned out to be worse than stale! Another time I bought gingerbread men that I could have played hockey with. I could go on and on. I don't know how they stay in business. What a shame! If you need kosher baked goods try Blacker's in Newton. I have only tried the half moons at Blacker's and they were fresh and delicious. read more

Thankfully I don't live anywhere near this place. Wow. I'd been through this little shopping plaza a number of times - to grab a cup of Starbucks - but had never noticed Cheryl Ann's Bakery of Brookline until this morning. I was grabbing a coffee and thinking about getting a bit from the bakery case in Starbucks but nothing looked enticing enough. Leaving with only coffee in hand I saw Cheryl Ann's four doors down and popped in. Its the real-deal little bakery inside. Probably been rolling out choice baked goods for the locals for 40 years. I opted for the cheese danish. Just don't starting eating it till you're in your car and down the road. If you bit into it while still in the parking lot you might end up like me and compulsively strolling back for seconds 90 seconds later. There's no seats - its in & out counter service - but don't miss it; there's some seriously tasty treats inside the little white door of Cheryl Ann's. read more

This bakery has the most amazing Challah! If you like your challah soft and on the sweeter side you won't want to buy your challah anywhere else. It melts in your mouth and makes some of the best French Toast (just be careful to dip lightly into the egg mixture so it doesn't fall apart!). The challah is authentic and deeelicious but that's where it ends for us. We've been in the area for 20+ years and have Taken a chance on other baked goods, maybe once every couple of years since the quality declined - maybe 6 years back. Now, we're done. After our last visit, we basically threw all of it away due to lack of freshness and serious lack of interest. Everything from cookies to cakes and pastries all taste the same... like nothing but sugar. No flavor - just sugar. There are not too many fantastic bakeries in the Newton-Brookline area. Cheryl-Anns comes close to being fantastic, but doesn't quite get there. Some of the more traditional Jewish baked goods are awesome, like the Hamantash and the Challah is up there as well. But when it comes to other types of breads or pasteries, unfortunately the taste is usually good but not great. They are generally very friendly and helpful. read more
