I have visited Chesapeake Bay Distillery located in Virginia Beach, Va twice now. Each time I have visited I have had a pleasant experience. They are only open Friday 4-7, then Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7. So be mindful of that before driving all the way down to the beach. I wish they were open during the weekday, would be nice little after work hangout spot to catch a flight or two. The flights are $8 each and you get to choose 4 options. You can't beat that. I usually get two flights making my total $16 and I leave with a nice buzz. The customer service is really good. Our bartender carried on a conversation with us and kept us entertained. She's engaged and I'd like to wish her a happy wedding day. Over all I will continue to visit this spot, when open b/c I love how low key it is. Please note major construction going on currently around the distillery so may have to take a detour to get to them. read more

If you're looking for something fun to do this Summer, definitely stop in to Chesapeake Bay Distillery for their $8 cocktail flight. I arrived around 6:30pm in hopes I could still order a flight, since they close at 7pm. Thankfully, they weren't in a rush to close at all. In fact, almost 10 people came in after me. The lady working there was pretty nice and personable and the place was very clean. The flight includes 9 different flavors and you are able to choose 4 flavors for the tasting. My friend and I ordered our flights and enjoyed our tastings. Some we enjoyed more than others but it was still a good time and the drinks were very strong. My favorite was the Watermelon Ghost Margarita, which was made with fresh, watermelon juice and tequila with smoked ghost pepper. While at the Distillery, you can purchase bottles to take home or simply order a cocktail to enjoy. If you're near the Oceanfront, grab some friends and definitely stop in. read more

The place has a cute, relaxed vibe--not too busy when I arrived, but it did take over 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged me at the bar. The woman working the tasting room was caught up in a personal conversation and didn't notice me at all until much later. She eventually apologized and explained that she was talking to someone who had just received difficult news. I get that life happens, but even a simple "I'll be right with you" would've gone a long way. I decided to go ahead with the tasting flight and picked four items off the menu. Honestly, none of them really impressed me. The Watermelon Ghost Pepper Margarita with a Tajín rim was the most memorable, but even that felt like it was missing something. Their spirits hit hard up front but aren't very smooth, which made them hard to enjoy. The coffee liqueur didn't do it for me either. I didn't end up buying any bottles. I might stop in again for a single cocktail and the chill vibe, but it's not something I'd go out of my way for. We noticed this place driving to dinner and decided to stop by before we went back to our side of Virginia Beach and I'm glad we did. We walked in and there were tastings already in session. And the lone woman working behind the bar was so friendly and hospitable. We couldn't wait to sit down when some others cleared out! When we snagged seats, she gave us the tasting menu, and even poured us a drink to try out while we made our selections. We ended up going with a bunch of the seasonal specials as they wouldn't be there later in the year. Everything tasted amazing and my mom ordered an full size purple rain. The vodka & tequila is so smooth (we bought a bottle of vodka to take home). I was pleasantly surprised to see Dr. Stoners is also distilled here. After the flight, we had a drink each of our favorite cocktails and we will happily return when we are back out this way next time. I have always loved coming here but was honestly disappointed on my most recent trip. Chesapeake Bay Distillery has a great atmosphere and makes very smooth spirits. In the past, I love coming for tastings because they do beats and cocktails as part of their flights. They lose a star since on this visit I found out they have significantly reduced the size of the tasting glass for the cocktails. Previously it was a shot glass amount for a neat and a cute mini cocktail for a mixed beverage. Now everything comes in the shot glass. They have changed the presentation and I found the old flight boards and glasses much better. They limit what cocktails are available for the flights as well. Still a nice experience and great liquor. I may stick to neats in the future though. read more

An overdue review of Chris Richeson and his crew doing awesome things in the world of distilling rum & vodka. They are now celebrating a 14th year. The three products they distill are Chicks Beach Rum, Blue Ridge Vodka and Ghost Pepper infused vodka. I had all three and they were exceptional, albeit the Ghost Pepper left a low burn in my gut for the evening. They do have distribution. Awesome tasting with Bri pouring a shot of their Blue Ridge Vodka which was mighty tasty straight up. Bri not only pours, but educates customers on the product & makes great recommendations. My fave cocktail was the strawberry colada. Go check them out in the Vibe Creative District. I've now been back a few times and had their great products at events over the years. Not a bad deal, considering it's one of my lucky numbers. You're able to see where they do their distilling in the back, and though there isn't a ton of space inside, you can sit at the bar for a drink. This distillery is conveniently located in the art district near the beach. I went with a friend and had a really great time. We were the only guests for almost 2 hours and Ruthie provided excellent customer service! She was very compassionate and attentive. She also provided great recommendations for us to check out in the area. You can purchase a flight from their cocktail menu for $8 which is a steal. All of the tastings are of their speciality cocktails and they have a featured cocktails that varies each month. I tried the Twisted Peaches, Chronic Mojito, Smokey Arroyo, and the featured drink which are all very good! And their bottles are super affordable! This place is a hidden gem. We stopped in based on an ad in a VA Beach magazine. We came with a group of 4 and every shooter we tried was excellent. My favorites were the mojito, blackberry middle and strawberry lemonade. If you like tart get the lemon liquor straight up. Love everything about this place! The owner, drinks, location, etc. It's located at the Oceanfront close to Commune. They have their own parking space, so no need to worry about parking there. The room is very small. They only have 1 table bar for tasting, which isn't too bad since they don't get too busy anyways. They have a glass view of the distillery as well. You get to pick 4 double shot sized cocktails for $7. My most favorite is the key lime. It's sweet and tart and you can't really taste much the vodka. They're known for their ghost pepper vodka which packs serious heat. If you like spicy then you'll like them. I'm not a vodka drinker, but these drinks really get you to a good buzz. I had been wanting to go here for a while - prob since they opened. And every time I went to Commune, I was reminded of it, since they are right across from each other. It always seemed to be the "wrong time" though, which is why my first visit to Chesapeake Bay Distillery was delayed. Boy, was I missing out! Since I've finally made my way over there the first time, I've gone back several times and always enjoy it and want to go back as quickly as possible. Prob due to the fact that I finish their lemon drop bottles and need to come back for refills - but more on that below. First of all - Ruthie and the owner Chris are awesome! We were lucky enough to meet them both the first time and hang out for a small tour and a lot of chatting. Chris made sure I'd spill some Portuguese words out so he could kindly mock me - but all in good spirits. Since this is mostly a vodka place - and I am a vodka kind of gal - I had a hard time deciding on my choices for the flight. Only one flight (consists of four shots) per visit allowed since... yeah, you're drinking shots of vodka. The first flight I got was had a strawberry colada,a bri berri, a lemon drop, and a pain killer. I can confidently say that by now, I've tried them all though, even the ghost pepper ones! And I am not a fan of ghost peppers. All in the experience mindset though. If you're a fruity drink person, then you'll love, love, love, their bri berri and strawberry colada! I wish they sold a bunch of these in bottles like they do their blud ridge vodka, rum, and lemon drop. But since they don't, we ended up buying a couple of the lemon drop bottles. This place is awesome! We go to Commune all the time for breakfast and always talk about trying this place out. We came in around 2:30 on a Friday, so it wasn't crowded at all. The bartender was really friendly and knowledgeable, and she really helped in making a decision on what samples to get for our flights. I got the Bri Berry, Alligator Piss, Strawberry Colada and the Pungo Mule. I wasn't looking anything too sweet, so these were all really good choices. The Strawberry Colada is on the sweet side, but since it was a small tasting, it's something I knew I could handle. But they were all delicious. Pungo Mule was probably my favorite, it has all 3 liquors in it (vodka, rum and Ghost Pepper Vodka.) The Ghost Pepper Vodka gave it a really interesting kick. My husband ended up getting the Angry Mango, Espresso (without the creamer), Ghost Pepper Vodka and the Crabby Ghost. I have to admit, I'm not one for spicy drinks, but all of his were so good. I dipped my finger into the ghost pepper vodka because I didn't think I could handle it. I was right, it was crazy spicy. My lips burned for a good 5 mins. I was really amazed by the Crabby Ghost. I'm not a fan of Bloody Mary's, but this drink was so satisfying. It was like a meal.
