    Mermaid Winery outdoor seating

Mermaid Winery in Norfolk has been a good experience for me. It doesn't feel like a loud bar or a pressure-to-drink environment. It reads much more like a cozy restaurant with wine, not a wine tasting room where everyone is hovering around flights. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the space itself is interesting and comfortable. It's an easy place to sit, talk, and actually enjoy the people you're with without feeling out of place because you're not drinking. No one makes it weird, no one questions your choice, and you're not the odd one out. The food is the real anchor for me. I go for the meal, the setting, and the conversation, and that's more than enough. It feels like a legitimate dinner spot, not somewhere you're just tagging along while others drink. If you're sober or choose not to drink but still like going out, being social, and enjoying good food in a relaxed environment, this place works. I'm comfortable here, I enjoy the experience, and I'd go again without hesitation.

This location is completely different than the shore drive location. Vibes are kind of weird inside but the food was good. Corn cream brûlée was 10/10, definitely not everyone's favorite but I love it a as a corn connoisseur.

This was at first time at Mermaid Winery in their new location. It's so pretty! I love the space! It's small but spacious enough for several parties. The restrooms were very clean. The service was amazing. Darius served our party. He was super attentive and had great recommendations. The wine is 50% off on Wednesdays, so I purchased a bottle of strawberry moscato. I also split the Brussels sprouts and lamb egg rolls with a friend. Both were great choices! Good flavor, not spicy! Although the restaurant was booked, the staff were able to seat us for a bit before we left. 5 STARS! From the service, to the food, to the wine, I would definitely visit again!

This location is gorgeous. The customer service was amazing even at the bar. I'm not drinking alcohol right now and asked for mocktail suggestions. The bartender made the cutest drink that tasted really good and not overly sweet. I ordered the house salad with salmon. It came with a honey vinaigrette dressing. It was really good. I wish the salmon was larger as it was cooked perfectly. I was with a group of 7 and they accommodated us to move from the bar area to a table for more space. I'll be back soon as I love the food, the service, aesthetics.

Really happy to have stumbled upon this place. Food was great, wine was wonderful and the service was spectacular. Really enjoyed the manager who gave us some history.

This place is awesome! Loved the moody lighting and the decor. Our server was attentive and very knowledgeable of the menu. The mermaid tacos were delicious but the salmon stack was to die for. Our waitress recommended and it did not disappoint. Will definitely be coming back.

We were in Norfolk for a wedding, and I was trying to find a quieter place for dinner in the Granby Street area for our group. I was able to make a last minute reservation here for a group of 4 (Saturday night at 7 pm) and right after the wine festival. When we got here, they seated us right away. The waiter was relieved that we had reservations, and he didn't have to turn us away. It is a smaller seating area, so I'd recommend reservations! My sister and her boyfriend shared a wine flight and loved it. They ended up getting a bottle of one of the reds. We got the corn creme brulee and the fried brussel sprouts for an appetizer. We all agreed that the corn creme brulee was the best. It was smooth, with a bit of sweetness from the corn but some saltiness from the bacon bits. The best of both worlds! For entrees, my husband got the duck, my sister and I both got the short rib (the special) and her boyfriend got the pork. All the portions were HUGE. We loved the short rib - there were 2 huge pieces with a generous amount of mashed potatoes. The short rib was tender, and I loved the gravy. The pork was a little dry, but we still wanted to take it back with us. My husband ate all of his duck and enjoyed it. We passed on dessert because we were so full - but everything looked good. Our waiter was nice but busy. Entrees took a little bit to get to us, but well worth the wait! I'm glad we got a chance to try this place out!

I enjoyed the ambiance, very fun with the mermaid painting and lighting that mimicked being under water. Service, at the bar at 3PM on a Sunday was decent, not exceptional, but adequate-20% vs 25% tip. I ordered the LAMB SPRING ROLLS and forgot to take a pic before diving in. They were really yummy! I enjoyed a glass of old world Chardonnay and then switched to a bottle of Mermaid Winery Pinot Noir. Then ordered the PINOT PIMENTO CHEESE to continue enjoying my bottle of Pinot. I really enjoyed the flavors and presentation. I remembered to take a pic.

Me and the girls decided to meet up for a night out. This location is small with table seating for about 40 people but they do have about 10 seats at their bar. Darius and Drew were the bartenders/servers for the evening. I got there first out of our group of 7 and I'm happy I did. I was told that the table were competed booked and was encouraged to sit at the bar. It was 50% off Wine bottles night (any bottle that ISN'T Mermaid brand). I got a bottle of the Alta Vista Malbec and it was delicious. I also ordered the lamb spring rolls and a side salad. Everything was delicious. At one point, the bartender put a few tables together so we could sit together for a little bit which was very nice. I definitely would go back and sit at the bar. If you have a large group, I recommend making a reservation ahead of time

Fun spot to go on a date or to hang out. Highly recommend the wine flights. They are $20 for 52 ounce pores of different wines and categories. Or a custom flight for $25. It's a great deal and a good way to try a lot of different wine, including the mermaid house ones if you're looking to try those. I will say that the place is not well heated or cool so definitely bring your sweater or jacket in the winter. They got some good jams playing on the speakers and the vibe was very festive. The gentleman who was the bartender/waiter was very efficient and very good managing a large number of tables.

Mermaid Winery is an eclectic spot with a fun atmosphere, featuring colorful mood lighting, a massive mermaid mural, and whimsical artwork of animals drinking wine. It feels like its kitchen is still developing its identity, but there is a lot of promise here. THE FOOD Southern Bread Service: Do not skip the biscuits! These three massive biscuits had a crisp shell and a warm, steamy crumb. They are 100% shareable (or you will be too stuffed for your main), and they were the highlight of our brief stopover. The Redneck Roll: This dish was a bit of a "whirlwind." Between the blackened tuna, pineapple, sriracha, and BBQ sauce, there was so much going on that it became confusing to the palate. I would likely pass on this specific roll next time in favor of a simpler option. SERVICE The hospitality was a strong point. The manager and bartender were kind enough to share tastes of their popular red wines, which helped us navigate the drink menu. OVERALL A cool place to hang out with unique decor and decent service. I look forward to seeing how the menu evolves to match the potential of the venue.

I love the word mermaid winery in Norfolk. I have not been to the one in Virginia Beach. The location in Norfolk, although it may be small has the most beautiful ambience. I really love the spinach dip. I won't lie. Service is really slow, but I like the thing that quality takes a little time. The food is always hot the drinks, including the wine Flight is absolutely amazing. I'm not a big seafood eater but the Alfredo and the salad and even my dessert was great. I'll definitely be coming again. I even got me a cute little souvenir wine glass to go.

Evan was fabulous and did a great job keeping us informed and fed! And we had a huge wonderful meal for our large group. Beautiful spot. The Malbec was some of the best i have had. There was too much food to describe it all so a quick synopsis is delightful appetizers, especially the pimento cheese and chips, and the southern bread was as good a treat as I had all night. Delicious Tuna was good but the desert was better. Chocolate fondue with cake and other options was decadent and perfect ending to the evening.

Ask the Community - Mermaid Winery

Do they have wine tastings here or just the wine flights?

    Both

    How is the parking?

There's a bunch of parking on one side of the building, but the other side where it shares a parking lot with the other businesses is a little limited. You'll definitely find parking though on either side.

    What is the recommended attire?

There is no dress code. It's casual. I personally wouldn't feel right in flip flops but it wouldn't matter either way they wouldn't turn you away. I saw people in all sorts of outfits. Unless you're attending an event - wear what suits you.

The wine tasting is still my favorite part of the Cooper's Hawk experience. It never fails me. And Nightjar? That one has my heart. The brandy gives it just enough attitude to remind you that you are, in fact, an adult with excellent taste and nowhere important to be afterward. Once the tasting is over, we usually migrate to the bar, and that menu has quietly collected some serious favorites over the years. My longtime love has always been the shrimp and scallop risotto. The risotto itself is still consistently creamy, rich, and beautifully done. Unfortunately, the seafood portion just isn't what it used to be. The scallops seem to have entered witness protection, and the shrimp are often tiny and a little overcooked. At this point, it sometimes feels like a gorgeous bowl of risotto waiting for its seafood to come home. Maybe toss a little crab in there and restore some dignity to the situation? Just a thought. Thankfully, there are plenty of other winners. The burger is easily a 10/10 for me. The chicken piccata completely surprised me because I am not usually a big piccata person, but Cooper's Hawk somehow won me over. The Parmesan-crusted chicken is simple, familiar, and absolutely phenomenal. The green beans are always tender, the mashed potatoes are divine, and the quesadilla on the bar menu deserves far more attention than a quesadilla has any business demanding. Dessert and I have not spent nearly enough time together here, but I did try the chocolate mousse dessert, and yes -- she was worth meeting. The atmosphere is elegant without feeling stuffy. Depending on how lively the locals are around the bar, it can get a little loud, but that is honestly part of the charm. It always feels warm and welcoming, and somehow I manage to meet new people, make new friends, and then find myself back there celebrating with them later. That may be my favorite thing about Cooper's Hawk. I originally came for the wine and food, but over the years it has become a place tied to people, birthdays, family dinners, friendships, and plenty of "one more tasting and then we'll go" lies. The wine keeps me coming back. The food gives me plenty to love. And the memories make the reservation worth it every time.

We didn't quite figure out the "lay of the land" but there appeared to be a designated place for tasting that was packed. We enjoyed looking at the "wine toys" while we waited for our table. There are sooooo many unique things that I can't wait to purchase from a location closer to us when it opens; traveling with glass didn't seem too smart. Our server was great and I wish I knew her name to shout her out. Ask to sample any wine you're curious about. And let me say... the sampling pours are more than just a sip. I was astonished! I chose the red flight as rendered. Everything was good. I'm not a fan of Spanish reds and should have substituted that one. Next time! They are so conscientious about food allergies and preferences that you can customize everything (except the jambalaya). I already knew before arriving (because I look at menus ahead of time) that I was getting the scallop and shrimp risotto, especially after I learned I could have it without the disgusting peas and asparagus (but with extra spinach.... I do love some veggies). It was AMAZING and will probably be the dish I always end up getting at the Indian Land, SC location when it opens. No room for dessert so you'll have to read my next review for that. 10/10

I was pleasantly greeted as soon as I walked in and I couldn't help but notice how beautiful this place was. They not only offer an assortment of wine, but also a variety of crackers, cheeses, olives, honey and other treats as well. We were offered a sample of the Sage Derby Cheese and it was so good, I bought two lol. Once everyone arrived, we went into the Wine Tasting Room to learn about the wines of the Pacific Northwest and to sample wines from that region. The class was very educational and I learned quite a few things. For example, Cabernet Franc is the parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, which is my favorite wine. Once the tasting wrapped up, we were able to socialize with the group and the staff. We inquired about the membership and they even shared that they offer opportunities to wine school as well. Overall, I had the best time at Crystal Palate! The staff were extremely personable and the wines were great! Wine Wednesday EDUtastings are a great way to learn about different wines from specific regions so definitely stop in if you are a wine lover like myself! You will not be disappointed!!!

Okay... I officially have a new favorite spot, and it's Crystal Palate…read more At this point, my Wednesdays might as well be reserved because their wine tastings are THAT good. Each week they feature a different region and really take you on a full deep dive -- this week was the Pacific Northwest, and between the four wine samples and the education behind each one, I left feeling like I actually learned something (while still having a great time, of course). I brought a friend with me this time -- the same one who originally introduced me to Cooper's Hawk -- so it felt a little full circle being able to put her onto a place for once. And let me just say... she was impressed. Like, immediately texting people about it impressed. Now let's talk about that in-house herb cheddar. I don't even remember exactly what herbs were in it, but I DO know it was so good I had to buy some to take home... and my friend liked it so much she bought two. That should tell you everything you need to know. What really sets Crystal Palate apart though is that it's not just a tasting -- it's an experience. They offer classes, events, and even certification programs if you want to really get into wine and learn how to educate others. You can tell they genuinely love what they do, and it shows in every part of the experience. Honestly, I loved it so much I even asked if they were hiring -- that's how you know it's real. Great wine, great atmosphere, great energy... this place is a whole vibe. So if you're wondering where I'll be on Wednesday nights... you can find me and Lexi right here at Crystal Palate

A bit overcooked and needs a step up on quality. Every other part of the meal was excellent. I had lamb shank , wife had Tuna and daughter had Duck. Why daughter said that it was the best meal she had ever had! Dessert if crème brûlée and carrot cake both very good. Surprise of the night was the beat salad- wonderful! Final not that the service was excellent as well . Overall would definitely recommend the Mermaid winery restaurant in Virginia Beach.

In the summer I tend to gravitate toward lighter, sweeter wines, so the flight felt like the perfect choice for the day. Not surprisingly, my taste buds traveled straight to Italy. The Italian wines on the flight ended up being my favorites, with the standout being La Doria Moscato D'Asti. It was light, slightly bubbly, and perfectly balanced -- sweet but still refreshing. If you enjoy Moscato-style wines, this one was definitely the highlight of the tasting for me. The winery itself has a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy a glass (or a flight). They also offer a selection of light bites if you want something to snack on while you're tasting. I ordered the house biscuits with jam and butter, which are made in-house, along with an order of fries. Both worked well as simple bites alongside the wine. If I had been with a group, I probably would have ordered the charcuterie board -- the one at the table next to me looked very generous and easily shareable. Service was friendly and welcoming, and since it wasn't overly crowded when I visited, it made for a relaxed afternoon tasting experience. We actually stopped in after spending the day out enjoying the sunshine with my Boston Terrier, Lexi, and it ended up being a nice, laid-back way to wind down the afternoon
