We ate prior to coming here so we didn't get any food, but i did end up getting a skillet cookie which was sooooo good. Thankfully we came on a warm day, so we were able to sit outside on the patio. Came here with our Yelp crew for ladies night and it didn't disappoint. I'd never been here before and it was nice. It's extremely small inside, but beautifully decorated/painted. We sat at the bar amongst a room full of empty tables. We didn't get our seats until literally everyone was done eating/drinking (seriously). I didn't order any food because I ate before I came. But, everyone else's food looked good & they said it was tasty. Anyways, I ordered sparkling dry rose... go figure the name was "s*x" and it was actually the best drink there. Next, I ordered a dry/sparkling flight. Some of them were still too sweet. The pricing is nuts tho. 1 glass of wine was $15 & so was the flight. So, my advice is just order the flight... more bank for your buck. Wednesday is also half price bottles... the pricing ends up being what you'd pay for a normal bottle in the store, so it evens out. This was at first time at Mermaid Winery in their new location. It's so pretty! I love the space! It's small but spacious enough for several parties. The restrooms were very clean. The service was amazing. Darius served our party. He was super attentive and had great recommendations. The wine is 50% off on Wednesdays, so I purchased a bottle of strawberry moscato. I also split the Brussels sprouts and lamb egg rolls with a friend. Both were great choices! Good flavor, not spicy! This location is gorgeous. The customer service was amazing even at the bar. I'm not drinking alcohol right now and asked for mocktail suggestions. The bartender made the cutest drink that tasted really good and not overly sweet. I ordered the house salad with salmon. It came with a honey vinaigrette dressing. It was really good. I wish the salmon was larger as it was cooked perfectly. I was with a group of 7 and they accommodated us to move from the bar area to a table for more space. We were in Norfolk for a wedding, and I was trying to find a quieter place for dinner in the Granby Street area for our group. I was able to make a last minute reservation here for a group of 4 (Saturday night at 7 pm) and right after the wine festival. When we got here, they seated us right away. The waiter was relieved that we had reservations, and he didn't have to turn us away. It is a smaller seating area, so I'd recommend reservations! My sister and her boyfriend shared a wine flight and loved it. They ended up getting a bottle of one of the reds. We got the corn creme brulee and the fried brussel sprouts for an appetizer. We all agreed that the corn creme brulee was the best. It was smooth, with a bit of sweetness from the corn but some saltiness from the bacon bits. The best of both worlds! For entrees, my husband got the duck, my sister and I both got the short rib (the special) and her boyfriend got the pork. All the portions were HUGE. We loved the short rib - there were 2 huge pieces with a generous amount of mashed potatoes. The short rib was tender, and I loved the gravy. The pork was a little dry, but we still wanted to take it back with us. My husband ate all of his duck and enjoyed it. We passed on dessert because we were so full - but everything looked good. I was told that the table were competed booked and was encouraged to sit at the bar. It was 50% off Wine bottles night (any bottle that ISN'T Mermaid brand). Fun spot to go on a date or to hang out. Highly recommend the wine flights. They are $20 for 52 ounce pores of different wines and categories. Or a custom flight for $25. It's a great deal and a good way to try a lot of different wine, including the mermaid house ones if you're looking to try those. I will say that the place is not well heated or cool so definitely bring your sweater or jacket in the winter. They got some good jams playing on the speakers and the vibe was very festive. I love the word mermaid winery in Norfolk. I have not been to the one in Virginia Beach. The location in Norfolk, although it may be small has the most beautiful ambience. They have shareables and of course boards. And snackies....I love that. They also have a HH menu and a lunch menu. Both those menus are only available Tuesday - Friday. We decided on the Tuna Bite Nachos and Brussel Sprouts. The bartender helped us decide on the Brussel Sprouts. His reaction when we asked him how they were was so genuine and you could tell he loved them. They were perfectly cooked and delicious. The nachos were good enough. The tuna was delicious. But it came with beer cheese. I feel like tuna nachos should be a bit more elevated and not just a plate of nachos with tuna. Having the beer cheese made it seem that way. It didn't really enhance the flavor of the tuna. I probably would not order them again. So many things I want to try on the menu like the tacos and chicken salad. Attended a retirement party here and can I say it was the absolute best spread of food. Every item served from the hummus to the meatballs melted in your mouth. The most outstanding item was the cake. Normally I do not like white cake but it was the moistest but the icing it was like nothing I have eaten before! My hubby and I thought it was just ok. The waitress was nice but the hostess (older lady with gray/purple hair) was rather rude to us. She commented that we "must be tourists " since it was our first time there, in a condescending tone. We ordered their "Mermaid classic" flight of wines (not the best but they have over 600 wine varieties so I'm sure you can find something) and we also ordered their grazing board. Their grazing board was a very nice spread, the best one I have seen in a long time. We proceeded to eat everything on the board. That was all we ordered so we were pretty hungry . The hostess came by and asked if we were doing good and proceeded to say, "wow, you are the whole thing! Most people don't eat the whole thing!" As if to suggest we were glutinous. We were very insulted. The music playing was 1950s, 1960s so kinda gave an older vibe. The restaurant itself is beautiful with lots of beautiful art and beautiful patio furniture. While the food was tasty and the ambiance enjoyable, I cannot possibly recommend nor return to the Granby location of Mermaid Winery. My girlfriend made reservations for 4:45 pm on Saturday afternoon. We were told when we were seated (*not* when we made the reservation) that our table was next reserved for 6:20, so we'd have to be done dining by then. This is the first time in my 40 years of life that I've been given a time limit at a restaurant, but I figured if we ordered quickly we'd have plenty of time to finish our appetizer, meal, and wine flight. Unfortunately, we as diners cannot control the service or kitchen staff. We ate and drank quickly once everything arrived, and when we were finished with the main course our server asked if we wanted dessert. We did, so she left our table to bring us a menu. While she was away, the host came to our table and told us we needed to leave so they could have the table for the next party. We said we were waiting on the desert menu, to which he replied he was sorry but there was no time for us to order dessert. My girlfriend is a wine club member and a frequent Mermaid patron. Because I had only ever been to the one on Shore Drive, she had been planning for months to take me to the Granby location. What a shame that a fine dining restaurant-- one I was anticipating for months--would kick a table out while they're actively eating and wanting more. Cool spot to grab drinks! The ambiance is very quirky and colorful - there is a giant mermaid mural, orchid wall and lots of interesting furniture and decor. So this place gets 3.5 stars, I'm rounding up to 4 because I can't select half stars. So super cute inside this place, has a very under the sea vibe going- kinda magical kinda romantic. The food was excellent. Tasted great and was very fresh. I'd love to share pics of my entree but it took SO LONG TO COME that I immediately dug in and neglected to take a picture. Service is lacking unfortunately. It's a small space and there were 4 servers- but we still were left basically unattended. Also, our food took so long but another couples came out quickly. If your looking for the mussels dish with the sausage and spinach that another yelper took a picture of, They no longer have that. Despite not being able to try that mussel dish I was impressed with the charcuterie board and the presentation of My wine flights. There online menu only lists about 4 main wine flights but if you come to the restaurant there is approximately 11 different wine flights that you can try. Here's the official list: Old world New world French Red White Mermaid classic Sparking wine Rose' Cabernet flights Fortified and Aperitie Sweet wine So far I've done the Old world and French and they were sooooo good! The old world is indeed strong so plan accordingly lol. If your a wine head you will love the different flavors, notes, and origins of the wine. They also sell their own bottles of wine in the store and I believe they carry all the wines you will try in house so you can purchase them if you'd like. What a cool find this was! I really like the vibe when you first walk in, it felt fancy to me but not so fancy that you feel underdressed. I immediately felt welcomed, we had Alexis help us out, she was sweet and very helpful. We got a couple of wine flights and apps, I had the Lamb spring rolls which are big but very tasty! I came for a birthday of a friend on a Saturday in the afternoon. It was a party of 10, so she had to pay a $50 deposit, which then was put back on her bill. My issue with that was the server didn't know anything about the $50 coming back on her bill, and had I not helped her with making the reservation, she wouldn't have known to even ask for it back when it came time to pay. When we got there, the server seemed very "un-knowledgeable" (if I can make up my own word) & just very awkward. We figured he was a new(ish) server, so that didn't phase us at all. He did inform us by asking, "They told you that large parties can't order flights of wine, right?" No- no one informed us of that, and that's actually what we were eager to get (or some of us were). Food-wise, all of our food came out at different times, and I mean ALL OF IT. There was not one plate that came out with another. When I asked another server (a runner for our server) if there was any way we could possibly get our food at the same time so we didn't have to watch one person at a time eat, she told us there was only one cook in the back. I get it- covid, but we were there for about 2 1/2 hours, and our food not only took forever, but came out randomly. On top of that, none of it was hot or fresh- it all seemed like it had been sitting there for a few minutes. My girlfriend and I ordered a pizza that was crispy and looked so good, but when we bit into it, it was seriously cool. Not even warm. My friend ordered the grilled cheese, and she did say it was good, but it was barely warm- including her fries. I've always had great experiences here, but this really ruined it for me. I felt bad for my friend, because her birthday there was basically a horrible show. I would be very hesitant to ever return here again unless they got it together. What in the world?! This is my first time going since they moved into their new location. It is a smaller more open space. I do miss the outdoor patio hidden away, but it's in a more central location and you know longer have to deal with the train. HH menu is great. Foods around $7-$8 from 3-6pm. Since my girlfriend and I were free of stuff to do on the weekend, I thought that it would be cool to get some wine from Norfolk. Before entering the building, you see a statue of a mermaid, hence the title of the building. So I took a nice snapshot as part of the Yelp Adventure Challenge I was participating in. When you enter, you're greeted by the staff, all wearing masks to comply with COVID guidelines. At first, I planned to get some Strawberry wine, which tasted well and actually like strawberry cheesecake. But they also had Peach wine on hand, which actually tasted better. So I decided to get that one. Man is it good. One of the best wines I've ever had. It is strong, but you can definitely taste the Peach flavor from beginning to end.
