I recently stayed two nights at the Cheshire Cat Inn for a weekend getaway, and I can confidently say I'll be staying here again on future trips to Santa Barbara. This was my first experience at a bed and breakfast, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was genuinely blown away. The service, cleanliness, hospitality, and overall attention to detail exceeded every expectation. The rooms were charming, comfortable, and uniquely decorated, while the property itself is beautiful and impeccably maintained. The staff was incredibly friendly, responsive, and always easy to reach by phone or text. The breakfast deserves special recognition. Every meal was homemade, absolutely delicious, and honestly worthy of an award. It was one of the highlights of our stay. The inn also features a gorgeous garden and outdoor space that creates a peaceful, secluded atmosphere while still being conveniently located. State Street's shops and restaurants are within walking distance, and the beach is just a short drive away. As someone who typically prefers staying in upscale hotels, I was initially skeptical, but my girlfriend chose the Cheshire Cat Inn and I'm so glad she did. This charming bed & breakfast made my trip to Santa Barbara even better. Cheshire Inn is located on a quiet, safe street. It's within a few blocks to the State Street Downtown. The place itself has ample parking with additional parking around the block. The inn has two houses and additional cottage units separated across the parking lot. You enter via the garden - the garden is tranquil and a great place to enjoy the free coffee and tea they provide. I booked the MadHatters room but got (free) upgraded to the Alice room because it was a relatively slow weekend. The Alice room had plenty of space for two, it offers a King bed, ample closet space and a small patio. It was kept really clean and I enjoyed the small touches - Molton Brown minis, a strong hairdryer, luggage rack, ice bucket, and champagne glasses (upon request). The staff here were incredibly attentive, fast, and personable. They were able to accommodate our requests of different pillows and request for robes. They offered breakfast in bed when I said I wasn't feeling well. The breakfasts in bed were a highlight - delicious, hearty food to start the day. I also enjoyed the small touches such as cookies in the living room. I would definitely come back and stay here for a relaxing, quiet weekend. read more

The gardens were lovingly tended and the Prestbury decor was updated and comfortable. While the innkeeper and all support staff were welcoming and strived to meet our needs, there were significant areas for improvement. For example, there were noticeable areas of damage from water leakage, the breakfast food items appeared to have been bought from Costco and not homemade as in past visits, they no longer offer evening wine tasting and small food bites, the jacuzzis were removed from the cottages and the gazebo area, WiFi reception was inconsistent to the point I stopped trying, and a neighborhood cat howled for much of the night. I was a yearly visitor and the Cheshire Cat Inn was a favorite, but no longer. I'll be patronizing the Simpson House instead. read more

This was a last minute check in. From our arrival to our departure everything went smoothly. The staff was very accommodating and very helpful. We had an amazing strata for breakfast along with the most tasty yogurt/granola/fruit mix. The rooms had their own personality and it was fun to check out the Alice in Wonderland art around this B&B. The Cheshire Cat Inn is a delightful bed & breakfast located near the upper end of State Street just over a half mile from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The Inn is themed around Alice in Wonderland and features 14 guest rooms plus 4 cottages. My wife and I stayed two nights en route to a wedding in SoCal, and another night during our return trip to the Bay Area. We lodged in the Woodford Cottage during our trip to SoCal. It was nicely appointed and super clean. Our hosts, Caroline and Andrea, greeted us warmly and they were very accommodating throughout our stay at the Inn. They made every effort to ensure our stay was comfortable and relaxing. Our cottage was spacious... 628 square feet... and clean. The morning meal features either a Continental breakfast or a warm dish like Quiche Lorraine. Our breakfast also included some local history and Santa Barbara lore provided by the Inn's owner and chef, Simon... entertaining and informative. The homey vibe and friendly staff made our visit a memorable one. We will return. Did I mention the Inn is very clean? P.S. During our drive back to the Bay Area, my wife received a text saying that the staff had found her necklace. The necklace she didn't know was missing until she got the text. Wonderful stay! Absolutely wonderful stay. We stayed in the Woodford cottage, which I recommend! It's your own little house to yourself. The main house was also beautiful with a lovely back garden. The cottage had 2 bedroom, kitchen living room! VERY CLEAN! Quiet, safe neighborhood! Host were lovely and breakfast every morning was fresh and delicious! We had such a great time here! Everyone was so nice, breakfast was delicious, communication was great and they answered all my questions. We are definitely coming back here. It's a few blocks away from State st. where all the action is but the area where the Inn is is so tranquil and relaxing. They have good quality toiletries, nice hot running water, coffee and water stations downstairs. You don't need anything else. We loved the antiquity with modern conveniences and the references to the storied cat. The rooms are charming. The staff is efficient and pleasant. The breakfasts are scheduled by you (with only two options*) and they are well prepared. The gardens around the manor are beautiful and well maintained. There is a parking area off the street. The A/C got us through a warmer than expected spell, and the patio off of the room is a great place for reading. The location is off of the busy main drag, with walking distance to many of the restaurants. We would stay here again, next time we are in Santa Barbara. *Our only complaint was the lack of "cheese less" breakfast items. read more

Absolutely loved my weekend stay here! The Cheshire Cat Inn is so charming. Located in a quiet neighborhood, but walking distance to State Street (10-15 min). Ample parking, clean, home away from home feel. The staff members were so kind and accommodating! They upgraded our room to the Queen of Hearts which featured a private patio and entrance. Additionally, we communicated a few days prior to our reservation about my dietary restrictions, and they were able to accommodate for breakfast. During our recent visit, we found our stay here so good that we will definitely be back. The inn and it's gardens were so nice. We were able to walk to downtown for shopping and dinner. This is a lovely property with very nice staff. We stayed in the Cheshire Cat room and our friends stayed in one of the cottages across the street. We all enjoyed the breakfast and I would give my right arm for that chocolate cookie recipe!!!!! I just couldn't give five stars because the Cheshire Cat room is just a bit on the odd side - the bathroom door is more on the transparent side of the frosting scale so definitely don't share this room with someone you're not -very- comfortable with! Renovating a bedroom space to include a bathroom is always a bit of a challenge so the bathroom in this room is a bit oddly arrayed with the toilet inside the walk in shower and the sink outside of it, but the tilework is beautiful and the shower very comfortable and spacious to use. The room was immaculately clean and cozy, and the staff left me a really thoughtful birthday card and treat . Also given that the room's on the main floor by the common area and kitchen, there's a lot of footsteps and doorbells ringing etc. which really can't be helped much, let's just say it's part of the b&b charm! Again - the COOKIES. Don't miss the cookies. I couldn't stop eating them. read more

I love inns and always do a lot of research before staying at one and I feel this one met standards but wasn't "wow". Upon arrival, we told them our name and they walked us to our room. It wasn't the usual check in of checking Id which we found odd.The room looked like the pictures and was very cute. There was no coffee maker in the room which had I known, I may have looked elsewhere. They offer it downstairs where there is one kerig so if there's other guests, you'll have to wait. They text you two options for breakfast the next day which the first day did not include eggs just pastries. They ask for a time we would like it to be served but they don't actually serve it until half an hour after, so why ask at all? Other inns in the area offer wine and cheese hour which I always look forward to at every inn. This was not an option at all nor any other mid afternoon snack. They do have ample parking and it isn't too far of a walk from state street but the lack of usual inn amenities was disappointing. They do offer cookies at night which is nice. The actual breakfast was tasty but the coffee was really weak. The kerig is much better. The service was very nice but I'd give it a 3 6 rather than a 4. read more

We chose this accommodation for a family gathering and it was absolutely wonderful! The inn is conveniently located within walking distance to State Street and it offers lovely rooms with individually controlled air conditioning, comfortable beds and a delicious breakfast. An added bonus is off street parking-a real benefit in Santa Barbara. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and so serene-would be great to sit with a good book and a glass of wine. As wonderful as the accommodations are, the staff is even better! They are there to answer questions, advise regarding activities and just so warm and welcoming. I stayed here over the last weekend and overall it was a very nice experience. First off, the hotel itself is lovely and adorably quaint. The breakfast offered each morning is quite nice and well thought out. One morning we had sausage strata (like a quiche but with croissant mixed in instead of a crust) and it was divine. Caroline and Simon were both very kind and accommodating. The courtyard where breakfast is served is very well maintained and beautiful, with plenty of sun and shade. My only two complaints are the bed in our room (the hare) was very stiff and the AC was finicky. Thankfully I had my own pillow because I had to sleep on the two pillows provided for my shoulder and hip (I am a side sleeper). The weekend we went was unusually warm for November (in the low 90s) and even though I had the ac set to 70 all the time, it rarely made it past 73 in the day. The A/C would turn on and off throughout the day, at random. (For a small complaint, the thing provided in our room was small and quite old. Probably 18". So don't expect to watch much tv on it! Hopefully that won't be a problem.) Given the price here is competitive with other places, like La Quinta, I'd absolutely recommend it over a hotel like that because it won't give you the same charm or great breakfast. read more

Absolutely loved this B&B right near everything in Santa Barbara. Stayed here for 4 nights in April in which room I can't recall but could probably look up but it doesn't matter. Our room had a super comfortable king size bed, a nice seating area by the window, and a balcony that you could at least see some of the mountains from. Our host was very warm and kind and welcoming, serving us a tray of croissants and fruit and oats and jam with coffee every morning. Dining area was still closed due to covid, but the room service was welcome and where ever she got her baked goods from makes mean croissants! Bathroom was a bit small but the water got hot and had great pressure. The B&B is 2 blocks from the main street - can't recall the name of the street, but its where everything is located - and 2 miles from the pier. We walked all the way down a few times, checking out all of the great restaurants and shops and enjoying the perfect CA weather. It was a perfectly comfortable place to stay. As everything closed early due to Covid restrictions, we spent more time in the B&B then we otherwise would have, so it was nice to have such a pleasant and relaxing place to come back to. They gave a discounted rate on account of the fires and we met many other evacuees there. We had a wonderful two night stay here around new years. We stayed in the tweedledum room if you want an amazing bathtub with enough hot water that you can enjoy a long bath. This place is spotless, so charming and Andrea was just a lovely host. If anything does go wrong they are on it an accomodate in an instant. Fabulous breakfast. If you love old Victorian charm it's just perfect. Great distance to State street and plenty of parking. Truly worth the money if you are in SB. amazing coffee all over the city. The Cheshire Cat Inn was on the "beautiful babes" list of places she really wanted to stay while in Santa Barbara. We are both very happy we spent our weekend there. The location is in a beautiful neighborhood, usually quiet, and outside of the busier areas of the city. The buildings are certainly old, but maintained beautifully. Lots of things to appreciate including the gardens, which provide a very peaceful setting. The staff is amazing, very friendly and accommodating. Our room was the "Queen of Hearts", and was comfortable, but lacking any useful closet space. But it is what it is, and the setting and area more than made up for it. The "private" patio was also a perk with the room, again a very nice setting. We loved the breakfast, not to mention the cookies. We would stay here again without a doubt. I booked online so in my case I did not get any of the deals spoken about in other reviews. Maybe a phone call will be useful in booking a room. read more

We were meeting friends who were staying at the Cheshire to use their room to change into clothes for a wedding we were all attending. Unfortunately, we (as in not me) managed to lock the car keys into the rental car, along with the aforementioned wedding clothes. The car rental company was NO help. We were parked across the street from the Cheshire, and, fortunately, the proprietor, Andrea, happened to come out of the Inn as we were trying to figure what to do. Without being asked or knowing our connection to her guests, she offered to help and called a service to unlock the car. Without her help, we surely would have missed the wedding. If she was so kind, helpful and resourceful for people who were not staying at the Inn, I can only imagine the wonderful service that Cheshire guests enjoy. read more

First off I must say that Cheshire Cat has the most amazing hosts. I would like to personally thank Andrea for her excellent recommendations and hospitality. Carolyn, who checked us in could not have been any nicer and was so welcoming. The communication between the staff and us was outstanding. I'm not really a bed and breakfast fan but I'd heard about Cheshire Cat forever, and wanted to give it a try. Alice's Suite was surprisingly big, clean and stocked with lovely Molton Brown products. The king bed was very comfortable and we slept like babies. The inn is walking distance to State Street and all of the shops and restaurants. Very quaint accommodations. The staff was very pleasant and the location was centralized to downtown. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because they should have had some comfy chairs to sit on since we had a balcony room with a nice view. Also they served the same cookies every night as a snack. Some variety would have been nice and a change up with perhaps brownies or cupcakes. This is the most darling place - I wish I could live here. For such an old looking house, everything is very high tech and updated! You need a code to get in the buildings, and you get your own key to your room, so it's very safe and secure. We stayed in the "Dormouse" room, with its own fireplace, television, guestbooks and all. The "lobby," which really looks like a beautiful Victorian living room, smells like shortbread cookies and plays whimsical music. They really make you feel enchanted! The breakfast was delicious and even had (limited) vegan options - ask for almond milk - in their beautiful patio courtyard. Very pristine, but not stuffy.
