And of course more shops equate to more locations while walking around to discover (then continuously support) all things caffeinated. And such it was when I first visited the 'Burg over a year ago. I wondered streets and alleyways in search of a pour over, Americano, and of course a bag (or three) of beans to take home. And in doing so I stumbled upon Chestnut. At that time they were next door to Magpie (which was where I was headed) so I popped in. Chemex in use, beans being stirred in the back (part of the roasting process), and an aroma that feels like a warm blanket to my soul. Since that first visit they have moved over to Liberty Mercantile (across the street and in the basement) and expanded their space. But their quality remains top notch. I say that on behalf of their pour overs, espresso, and lattes. And beside it, their customer service. Always a smiling face and willingness to chat about all things Harrisonburg. I went there with the intention of looking for some fresh-roasted beans to take home to use in my recently purchased espresso machine. What I found is a simple, yet perfectly curated coffee shop with very knowledgeable employees who just love coffee! I got a great recommendation on a Mexican blend, which was only roasted a few days before my purchase. They were even actively roasting beans when we were there! I decided to get a freshly made latte while I was there for the ride home, and needless to say, the coffee was absolutely phenomenal! The owner cannot be everywhere at once, so we really appreciate their responsiveness and taking feedback. Based on that, we feel we can give feedback, and would consider going back to Coffee Hound for another type of drink. Thanks to Coffee Hound for the refund and educating the employee. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Took my wife here, specifically for a Matcha, and it was TERRIBLE. We went Sunday, June 14th after noon. There was a gentleman and a young lady that wore a hoodie with a hat. She seemed unhappy the second we walked in. She made a severely diluted, watery Matcha. When my wife pointed it out, the barista insisted it was because of the brand of Almond Milk. (Yet, my wife gets Matchas with Almond Milk everyday - and they are NOT watery!) She didn't offer to remake it, didn't offer to make it thicker. Nothing. We ended up getting another Matcha from another coffee shop and DUMPED (wasted our money on) Coffee Hounds almost $10 Matcha (including tip). My wife tried to drink the watery matcha but I just couldn't take it. We stopped at another coffee shop, and got her a Matcha from somewhere that knows what a Matcha is and how to make it. Maybe next time Coffee Hound will teach their employees better customer service and how to make quality Matchas for their prices! Or getter "better" Almond Milk.
