And of course more shops equate to more locations while walking around to discover (then continuously support) all things caffeinated. And such it was when I first visited the 'Burg over a year ago. I wondered streets and alleyways in search of a pour over, Americano, and of course a bag (or three) of beans to take home. And in doing so I stumbled upon Chestnut. At that time they were next door to Magpie (which was where I was headed) so I popped in. Chemex in use, beans being stirred in the back (part of the roasting process), and an aroma that feels like a warm blanket to my soul. Since that first visit they have moved over to Liberty Mercantile (across the street and in the basement) and expanded their space. But their quality remains top notch. I say that on behalf of their pour overs, espresso, and lattes. And beside it, their customer service. Always a smiling face and willingness to chat about all things Harrisonburg. I highly recommend you stop in and try them for yourself!

I went there with the intention of looking for some fresh-roasted beans to take home to use in my recently purchased espresso machine. What I found is a simple, yet perfectly curated coffee shop with very knowledgeable employees who just love coffee! I got a great recommendation on a Mexican blend, which was only roasted a few days before my purchase. They were even actively roasting beans when we were there! I decided to get a freshly made latte while I was there for the ride home, and needless to say, the coffee was absolutely phenomenal! I will be sure to continue to purchase from this family-owned business in the future for great tasting coffee!

Simply put, the bodega breakfast sandwich might be the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten. I took it to eat on the road and was startled about how delicious it was. The freshly baked (you can tell) brioche bun with everything bagel seasoning on top added a great salty taste to go along with the tasty stuff inside. I've traveled all over the country for work for 20+ years, and like I said, this might be the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had! To top it off, the staff was super nice.

I think it was because they enjoyed working there. Or, at least it give them a chance to eat some really tasty food. I had their Cubano Tartine. That's kind of like an omelet with the ingredients of a Cubano sandwich, except for the roll, mixed in. (And yes, I get that the cooking process is a bit different.) ' Anyway, this Cubano Tartine shows up on a plate in front of me. I dig in and keep digging. The ingredients, ham, cheese, pickles, etc, were plentiful and delicious. They were sitting on an ample slice of their sourdough bread. That was the first issue. It was IMPOSSIBLE to cut. I guess I could have asked for a steak knife or maybe a power tool. But, there was so much other stuff that I was able to have a very filling meal without it. The other issue was that the lightly dressed side salad was doused in dressing. Again, didn't complain because, for me, it wasn't a problem during this visit. Issues aside, if I come back to Hagerstown, I'll look for an excuse to come back.

Made with house-made cold brew, a couple dashes of bitters, a splash of maple syrup, (and I added a splash of almond milk!), it was smooth, slightly sweet, and very refreshing. I also had a V60 pour-over of their seasonal Costa Rican single origin, and it was incredibly clean and expressive. I genuinely tasted the pomegranate and hibiscus notes, with a subtle cocoa finish. Bright without being sharp -- just a really well-executed cup. The triple ginger scone was the perfect pairing with the latte -- tender inside, lightly crisp outside, and warmly spiced without overpowering. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, the space was welcoming, and the quality across the board was top-tier. My only suggestion? Stickers. I'd absolutely put one on my laptop. Highly recommend.

I then waited for an extended period of time for my latte, no there was not a line a of drinks to be made. The barista gave my drink away so I asked if my drink would be ready soon and she told me that someone must have taken it, she then promptly made the latte. The bagel was cold and dry, even with the cream cheese. The latte however was moderately enjoyable. Overall, I will not be returning.

To paraphrase the Beatles, there's nothing I can say that can't be said, but man do I love, love, love this place. Excellent whole bean offerings, roasted to perfection by expert roasters. Delicious hot and iced coffee and espresso drinks that simply can't be replicated anywhere nearby--including, sadly, in my home town of Staunton (hey, Trager Brothers! There's a huge opportunity for expansion in the Queen City!). And top all that off with sublime, informed, and incredibly friendly front of house staff. Yeah, it's a little hard to find, but anything worth having is worth looking for. And in this age of googling and Apple mapping and whatnot, there's no excuse for not availing yourself to the BEST coffee in central Virginia. Y'all who might have read some of my other reviews will know: I usually have a minor nit to pick with even my five stars. Not so with the Brothers Trager, fam.
