Unfortunately, at least an our case, the administration failed to honor their multiple promises to *ALWAYS* keep our Mom's family members up-to-date on her progress. Despite multiple requests for details, they refused to give us any, and we found out that they had made the decision to both put our Mom into the Care Center *AND TO REFUSE TO ALLOW HER TO MOVE BACK IN TO HER APARTMENT* only *AFTER* they had done so. I can think of few things more unethical, immoral, indecent, and counter to every single positive aspect of the Vi than for the administration to unilaterally move a resident into the Care Center and prevent her from moving back into her apartment without informing her children at all, let alone after promising and assuring us multiple times that we would be notified right away if her status there was *EVER* at risk of changing. I initially planned to NOT recommend that anyone put their loved ones in a position where the administration of the facility could unilaterally move their loved ones into the Care Center and prevent them from moving back into their apartment without notice, but I realize that not everyone in a corrupt administration stays in their position forever; thus my context-specific recommendation of Maybe. My advice? If considering having your loved ones move into the Vi At The Glen, you should first insist that the administration sign a document stating their obligation to *ALWAYS* and *IMMEDIATELY* keep your loved one's family members apprised of any change in status and the reasons therefore so no one else has to suffer the way the administration made us suffer upon discovering their cowardly subterfuge regarding our Mom (and if they won't do so, then our firsthand experience suggests that you should *RUN* in the opposite direction). No one should have to ever be put through the emotional wringer we were put through by the unfathomable callousness of the current Vi administration, and to be clear, my 1-star review reflects only that aspect of our experience with the Vi At The Glen.

After 20 years in the VI's independent living, our 97 year old mom recently experienced a…read moreprecipitous decline in her health. After a hospital stay the week after Thanksgiving, the Vi had her spend time in skilled nursing to ensure she can safely resume independent living. We determined that a move to assisted living would be best and fortunately, an opening in assisted living was coming available. She is now successfully moved into assisted living thanks to the attentive care and attention to detail provided by the entire staff during that transition. Prior to the move, our mom was apprehensive about losing her independence in skilled nursing and assisted living. However since experiencing the care provided in both skilled nursing and now in assisted living, she is very pleased with the move. The staff not only ensured a smooth physical move, but they have spent extra attention to ensure she integrates with the residents in dining, exercise classes, art activities and more. Whenever I off-handedly ask a staff member about any question, I later receive a phone call from a nurse, therapist, or social worker making sure that I received a sufficient answer. I've been beyond impressed by the professionalism and level of care in assisted and skilled nursing. The Vi has truly impressed me and lived up to a standard that I didn't think existed anymore in the "nursing care" segment. I would highly recommend the Vi for anyone evaluating independent living options. The value that the Vi provides throughout a person's lifecycle is impressive. The care and level of support in not just daily living but during times of transition (when the help is really needed) is delivered in a personable and caring way. The Vi may not be the low price alternative, but if you are looking for quality in care, the staff, the culture, facilities and services, I cannot imagine another facility topping the Vi at the Glen. I appreciate it more now than I did before as they have delivered on what I had always hoped would still exist in today's profit-focused world.

Large turnover in permanent staff as well, as they all left after the good admin did. Program outsources for many nursing and caregiving shifts because of consistent staff vacancies. These temp staff are not well trained to the health and safety guidelines of the program or individual resident needs, and are not at all well supervised. Residents walking around with no pants on, soiled from urine or feces. Some haven't changed clothes in multiple days and smell like it. Many have visible bruises or cuts from falls and accidents bc of low supervision. Room doors are locked to keep residents out of their room during the day, and in them at night. Look at the pictures on social media- always the same small group of happy looking seniors while the facility itself houses very many more. There are a small number of really kind and caring individuals who do very good work with residents or at their role at Emerald, but they get overshadowed by those who are just collecting a paycheck- and the negative experiences that stem from that. Overall the program is not structured, staffed, supervised or equipped to provide high quality care for seniors.

I started in a…read moresmall one-bedroom affordable apartment, enjoyed feeding the birds in the tree near my patio, then moved to a much larger apartment with two bedrooms/bathrooms/walk-in closets, balcony, storage unit, and assigned parking space in 2025. It was completely refurbished with deep cleaning, flooring, and painting throughout making it feel brand new. There have been many changes to The Lodge over the years. Three additional phases have been completed adding over 100 units. The assisted living area Encore was replaced with several new independent living apartments on the northside. Phases 1-3 were updated in all the common areas with artwork, carpeting, furniture, lighting, and painting to make everything look bright and fresh. Phase 4 will get the same treatment in a few years. The plan is to rejuvenate common areas every 10 years. Cherie Getlin became the Executive Director in March, 2024. Her vast experience and dedication, she began her career in senior living while still in high school, has made a tremendous positive impact on the community. Linda Yost is an excellent Marketing Director who is very helpful with your transition to a new life.The management company has changed to Life Care Services, a leader in the senior industry. The overall atmosphere at The Lodge makes living here a pleasant experience. The staff is very friendly. A welcome bonus is that the cost is quite reasonable compared to many other communities in the North Shore area. Cable, utilities, and wi-fi are included in the monthly fee. The dining rooms are convenient without a mandatory meal plan. I like cooking in my apartment every once in a while. There is even a senior refund on property taxes distributed to residents at the end of the year. So, check out The Lodge of Northbrook. You'll be glad you did.

Sadly, the pandemic hit during her first year at the community, with declining health following shortly thereafter. During her stay at the Lodge, many of the building's kindest and most dedicated employees left their positions. The 2220 building is in need of some updates. For families selecting a retirement community, it's important to keeping mind that a loved one's health may decline at any time. The Lodge does not offer weekend meal service, and very few of the residents eat lunch and dinner in the dining room during the week. The small assisted living wing at The Lodge was not certified for Medicare rehab during Mom's lifetime. The management and sales staff was difficult to communicate with when we went to list my mother's unit shortly after her death. We were charged over $3,000.00 for painting and decorating fees for a 2-bedroom unit that was in pristine condition! Since Mom died during the pandemic and had a private, graveside funeral, I contacted David Randle, the property's director, about holding a celebration of life at the building in the spring or summer. He promised to have the Executive Chef get in touch with me -- that never happened. There are many beautiful choices for seniors seeking retirement communities along the North Shore -- please look elsewhere. Caveat emptor -- let the buyer beware!

When I recently told the nursing staff about a missing gold bracelet so if it turned up they would know whose it was, they in earshot of my grandmother told me is was all her fault and that she lost it and that she had no idea of what was going on. They then told me she regularly goes to visit my grandfather in another section and had lost her mind (this was the night before his funeral.) Keep in mind, I wasn't blaming, I just wanted to make sure someone was aware. Places like this that pray on people who can't defend themselves deserve to be run out of business, and I sincerely hope there is a special place in hell for the people who are mistreating them. We pay over $5k a month for one of them, so for that amount of money I expect at a minimum some compassion. I would keep your loved ones FAR away from this place.

Plus a beauty shop, little store, and a medical office that looked like an Immediate Care type place, and I saw that it was open during every visit. My relative has been here for over a decade and loves it. Her independent living apartment is cute, safe, comfortable. The halls are quiet. The elevators work. It smells good, like a hotel. Everyone looked really chill and happy. Plenty of free parking and nice landscaping. My relative is currently in staying in the Brandel nursing facility for rehab for a few weeks, and it's nice to be on the same campus as that service. She's in good hands! Thanks, Covenant!
