We tried the jambon sandwich and chicken baguette, paired with a golden ale beer and coffee. Both sandwiches were outstanding--freshly made with incredible bread, generous fillings, and a perfect balance of textures. The strong cheese they offer on the side is a must; it pairs beautifully with the sandwiches, and the staff even lets you try it before deciding, which is a great touch. We did go around 2pm and unfortunately the pastrami was already sold out, which speaks to how popular it is. We also waited about 30-40 minutes in line, but it moved steadily and didn't feel too painful. We were lucky to find a spot to dine in, though most people grab their food to go. Service was friendly and quick despite the constant rush. The atmosphere is more grab-and-go than sit-down, with very limited indoor seating. These sandwiches are curated, edible pieces of art made with love by the one and only Alain. It's easy to see why they're so popular. People love the sandwiches so much that his stall inside Marche' Des Efants Rouges can see lines lasting upwards of an hour or more. And people stay in the line. I had the corn beef, which was excellent, with caramalized onions and lettuce and tomato and the stronger of the two cheeses (which they let me taste test). The restaurant itself is a hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant but it has character. You can dine in but most people I saw got their order to go. The owner gives you a taste of two cheeses to choose which one you want for your sandwich. That's very generous and helps you choose the one you like best. From what I saw, he personally made the drinks or pours it then brings it to you. The kitchen in the back makes the sandwich. It does take time but it's worth it! My mom and I messed up the order at first because we failed to specify we wanted two different sandwiches, one meat and one chicken. So we had to go back to our sandwich maker and re-order before we paid. Now for the sandwich itself. It's fresh, tons of veggies, and the meat quality is excellent. I had half of a thin cut beef sandwich and a bit of a chicken sandwich. It has avocado, lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, and your choice of cheese on it, along with some other seasonings and herbs. the bread is delicious and fresh! It is messy, so sitting is recommended. Comparing this sandwich to the 2012, I gotta say, 2012 wins. So disappointed by my experience here and the way we were treated. I had looked forward to trying this sandwich for months. The guy by the door starts arguing with him about it (I couldn't understand as I do not speak French) and they're sort of yelling back and forth over us and EVERYONE in the entire shop is watching. It was humiliating, I literally was tearing up because we were treated as if we were stupid and insolent rather than asked politely to leave considering we didn't even do anything wrong. We left the shop and almost didn't even grab our sandwich because the whole experience was so upsetting and insulting. I ordered the miam miam with prosciutto. The prosciutto was excellent quality and the other veggies perfectly complemented the meat. The bread was also incredible - really crunchy and tasty by itself and added in the oils/juices from the veggies and it created an incredibly delicious bread. Interestingly the video we saw showed a man cooking the galettes in what looked like an open market/food court.
