    Rigatoni with Smoked Salmon Sauce
    Jacob B.

In opposition to my first review, this is a restaurant I have been going to for about 20 years, and it has always a fantastic experience. This evening I ordered the Smoked Salmon Sauce on Rigatoni, my usual. I normally dine here about once a week, and while I'd like to try something different I always go back to the Smoked Salmon! My favorite, and probably, the best item on the menu. Though, all their food is very fairly priced and is delicious - definitely try the marinara sauce! As a regular I can confirm that the staff are fantastic, and always are working their hardest. I will say if you come here on a Friday or Saturday at peak dinner hours (5:30-6:30PM) it might take a little extra time to get your food, but that gives you a more time to enjoy your wine and conversation. To close, Chianti is a staple of western Henrico dining, serving the area for 25 years, and has maintained consistent dining experience for all those years. It is a must try if you're either new to the area or have lived here and haven't gone yet.

Authentic Italian and the cook is from Sicily who came over to NY before coming down to us in Richmond. I was killing time with my dogs getting groomed in the center at DogKrazy and well...my wife works in the wine biz so w a name like Chianti I had to check things out. I was set on pizza--I mean come on, Sicily and New York?!! But when a saw the Veal Parmigiana as a lunch special, I shifted gears. The service here is top-notch--very kind and genuine people. OMG--the focaccia bread that came out 1st was decadent...topped w butter and Italian live spices melting together...hot out of the oven...just on the dense side of a fluffy experience that made me really aporeciate this bread--good chew and a flavor bomb in every bite. The spaghetti I had as a side...bits of garlic clove and onion in the dish w Marinara...great! I hadn't had veal in forever since my wife and I share dishes and she's allergic to beef and pork...but I'm on my own and this was great! They have salmon, chicken, and other things, and I'm dying to try the zucchini and broccoli. There are a lot of subs and sandwhiches on the menu, and pizza, stromboli, calzones...I need to bring my wife here. The lunch portions are huge, so I can't imagine dinner. Peroni is on tap too! 5 stars!

We decided to come here for a nice dinner on a Friday night. We expected that it would likely be busy; it was. Fortunately, we were greeted quickly and told that a table would be available soon. After about 15 minutes of standing/waiting, we were seated at a table in the middle of the restaurant, surrounded by a few larger groups of people. The wait staff were definitely in high-gear for the evening. We were greeted and ordered some drinks. She had a glass of wine, and I had water. We decided to forgo any appetizers and went straight to the meals. I ordered the Chicken Francese, and for her, the Tortellini with Alfredo sauce. Mine came with a salad. We sat and chatted while we waited. We were served a basket of bread after a while...but no plates. Several minutes later, my salad arrived, but with the wrong dressing. By the time I had noticed it, the waiter was long gone. So...we sat. Finally I was able to waive-down someone who promptly returned for the correct salad dressing. Around us, the larger parties were being served. People who came in after us were being served. My salad was long since finished, and it seemed like our order was taking quite a bit of time. We watched and waited. After a while we were informed the "food will be out soon." The meals being served around us looked quite good and appetizing. Our hunger was definitely growing. The waiter continued to eye us every so often as we continued to wait for our meals. The bread was cold. The salad plate was still sitting on the table, and seemed like an eternity had gone by when the waiter once again stated that our food would be out soon. Several more minutes passed. Larger tables had nearly finished their meals, and some of the people who came after us had paid their checks and left. I finally decided that if the food didn't arrive in the next 5 minutes, we would leave. About 2 minutes later our food FINALLY showed up. Everything looked and smelled good. I requested some fresh bread and side plates. We were informed they were out of the regular bread, but would bring a buttered small loaf instead. Fine by me. I cut into the first bite of my Chicken Francese which was tender and easy to cut with a fork. Unfortunately, the flavor did not hold up to its visual appeal. The chicken was absolutely bland and tasteless, and the sauce was over-burdened with the flavor of lemon. No hints of butter or wine could be discerned. This was certainly not of the caliber of Chicken Francese I've had in the past. Even a bit of salt would have made this more appealing. After the first piece of chicken, I knew I would be unable to tolerate any more. Likewise, her Tortellini Alfredo was completely devoid of any flavor. Even the taste of parmesan (which should be prevalent), was absent almost entirely. Although the pasta was cooked nicely, the sauce did it no service. We looked at each other and decided not to go any further. The bread was equally tasteless and bland. Our waiter eventually rounded by our table once again. He noticed we had stopped eating and offered to-go boxes. I had to explain that I wasn't interested in taking the food home, and that it was not very good (I really hate doing that). He was visibly concerned. I explained the lack of flavor, over-abundance of lemon, and general poor taste. He apologized and quickly went to the back where he appeared to discuss with the manager. Soon thereafter he returned and stated that they would "comp the meal," and there would be no bill. We left. I have no doubt that Chianti has the capacity to serve meals that far exceed this experience, or at least I hope they do. They definitely have a good crowd of people, and seemed to have some "regulars" that sit at the bar. We will likely try them again in the future. Hopefully our experience will be much better.

Chianti's vibe is old-school, classic Italian. They seem to have a thriving takeout business in addition to the pretty full house of diners they had on a Monday night. The attitude reminded me of Italian restaurants from my hometown in South Jersey. Pretty blunt service, no frills, with a focus on the food. Among us, we ordered a cup of beef vegetable soup, a caesar salad, gnocchi with vodka sauce, an Italian hoagie, and a large cheese pizza. I was surprised the salad came out before the soup, but maybe they were cooking up a new batch of soup. The salad dressing was delightful, and they used all fresh hearts of romaine, which was great to see. The soup was tasty too. I added some of the parmesan cheese that was on the table to it, which elevated it even more. I ordered my Italian hoagie cold/not toasted and without the tomato, which I reiterated a few times and seemed to annoy the server ("I got that") but it's a real issue I encounter basically everywhere in Richmond, so I'd rather be semi-annoying than get a steaming hot pile of deli meat (ew). My hoagie was quite tasty and I ate the whole thing. It came with a side of pasta salad, which was just okay. I heard that the gnocchi was great, too. I didn't try the pizza fresh from the oven, so maybe that's an issue, but I didn't love it. My Sicilian grandmother tried a piece and was not thrilled. She said it tasted burnt. It definitely has a bit of a surprising char on the bottom, especially since it wouldn't look like that'd be the case just looking at it. I'd probably stick to sandwiches or pasta moving forward, as they seem to do both well.

Service: super nice and helpful on the phone when ordering and at pick up. Food: Lunch special good price for 8 in sub, fries and drink. Overall 3/5 I think it may have been better if we sat in and dined. I got there 5mins after the quoted time for pick up and the roll and fries were really soggy. My supreme steak and cheese (no pepperoni but all the other add ins which had a lot of veggies) but I transferred the meat/veggies and toppings to another roll I had at home, dropped the fries in the airfyer and made it work. My daughter ordered Chianti Chicken Sub which we both enjoyed more as it was tasty and roll wasn't soggy). I would like to go back and dine in. Ambiance: cute little restaurant in the Gayton Crossing shopping center, neighborhood/work day crowd and steady to go pick ups.

First time trying Chianti and overall we enjoyed our dinner. Staff was friendly and greated us upon entry. Tables are a nice size and spaced well, so you aren't dinning right next to another table. Our server took our order right away. Salads came pretty quickly though it seemed to take a long time for our main entree to come out. They got busier as we were eating and therefore our waiter didn't check back in until we were done eating. Fortunately we didn't need anything so it wasn't really a problem. I ordered zucchini as my side and was surprised when it came out breaded and fried....I assumed it would be steamed or sauted. Entrees are large, we both have leftovers for tomorrow +.5 Service +1 Food~Taste/flavor/quality +1 Presentation +1 Atmosphere/vibe +1 Value

Wednesday 12/21/22 12:18pm As soon as I walked in I was greeted and told I could sit anywhere. Found my seat and the waiter answered my questions and took my order fairly quick. I ordered a side Greek salad and a meatball sub. The sub came with fries and/or pasta salad but I opted out of either. FYI: The Greek salad is considered a separate order, which is fine. The salad came to the table pretty fast. Ok, let's go!! lol it looks appetizing and fresh. Whoa, the sub came just as fast! I had to remind the waiter for some napkins and my drink. No biggie though, they are pretty busy. Pretty much a full house with only two servers. Good job guys!

We entered and were greeted with " do you have a reservation" in a very un-inviting tone. We both said no. If she said follow me, it was faint. We knew to follow her. I should have walked out !!! The Restaurant was practically empty !! Maybe a total of 20. We walked up a small ramp that lead us to a larger dining area where we saw a few guests. At our table standing was a youthful warm smile waiting that made us feel ok to stay. I overheard someone calling the name of the woman at the door, and they said Patricia. Our server's name was Jocelyn and she was very delightful. Our server made suggestions and explained that most of the pasta is made in house. Still observing and listening. OMG, the woman is the manager. Mam, I'm sure you will be pleased to know that we will NOT return. She walked by several times smiling and conversing warmly with other guests. This is an authentic looking and a bit dated Italian Restaurant. I'll be brief here. I had the spaghetti and meat sauce. The pasta had that obvious taste of homemade and the sauce as well. The bread was homemade with the potential to be good, if it was warm and soft, not crunchy. I had the salad packaged to go. Appetizer was fried zucchini that was golden brown, crunchy and flavorful. RVA has MANY Choices of restaurants to choose and I should've known better.

Very old school with no online reservations which is not super convenient but hey I can get behind it if they are going for an exclusive vibe. Very much an old style Italian restaurant but feels like they have really packed the tables in here - like sardines- so yeah it feels a little tight for my tastes. Service was friendly and helpful. (Making the reservation over the phone was not overly warm and fuzzy but hey I get it you probably are tired of having to take reservations over the phone all day lol). We got a popular app- the squid, white bean and arugula which was bright and flavorful so lived up to the hype but a little disappointing in that there was not a lot of squid so $18 for beans and arugula seemed a bit much. Also got the seafood bisque which was pretty tasty. For entrees we got the halibut, the monk fish fra diavolo and the spaghetti with crab meat. The spaghetti with crab meat was shockingly good. It better be for $40 but I don't always like crab bc it can be overly fishy in a not good way but this entree was very good. We also liked the halibut- nice piece of fish perfectly cooked. The MonkFish had a nice flavor, but the bones in it was a little bit overwhelming, and kinda made eating a lot of work. Seemed pricey to me since only one of us had a glass of wine and no other drinks, but I guess $50 a person sans cocktails and dessert is the new norm?!

The open layout of the kitchen allows diners to see the cooks preparing food. One can also see the patio/outside seating from the inside as it was separated by a huge glass. Our server Matt, though he did not introduce himself, was very nice and knowledgeable of the menu and gave us great recommendations. Food was great. They a great and huge selection of wine and other drinks (I did not take pictures of this wine list that had multiple pages). I was not a fan of the nonalcoholic "Is that Cashmere?" Since it had grapefruit, pomegranate, cinnamon, vanilla, and soda, I was expecting a fruity taste but the cinnamon and other ingredients overpowered the fruity notes. Polpo alla griglia was great as the grilled octopus was chewy and flavorful. I would have preferred the beans to be softer though. Stinco di Maiale was very tender braised pork shank that really went well with polenta. Pesce arrostito was roasted rockfish and black rice with fennel sausage. This was very good too with a hint of spiciness. For dessert, the bunet was fantastic. It's chocolate, almond with amaretto. Love the texture. It was light and very good. Service was fantastic. Once you've told them food restrictions, everyone serving your table will know it without asking you again. The sommelier was very nice. If you're taking out your food, you'll receive a small piece of paper like for coat checks and you can get it when you leave. They also had card and a little something for birthday celebrants (cookies with candle) which was sweet. Would definitely be back!

The weather was a balmy 72° at 6:30 PM and slightly overcast which made the patio the perfect place. A very serene setting for a sophisticated meal. I highly recommend the patio, but you need to plan way in advance. Even on a Wednesday night. And definitely get there early because parking is a bear. I don't mind the walk, but anybody with mobility challenges, might find it tough to get there on time unless they can get dropped off. For cocktails our friends got a very swanky bottle of white wine by Cinque Terre. My husband and I got mixed drinks : the Italian stallion and the ciao fantasy. Very different experiences, but both very good. The Italian stallion was complex yet refreshing and the ciao fantasy was complex and smooth. For appetizers, we got the beef tartare and the Borlatti farro verde. Again, both very different but equally delicious. The tartar obviously more a protein forward appetizer that had a smooth richness brought out by the egg and the well chopped beef. The extra sourdough was a nice touch. The Borlatti was the perfect starter for a spring evening and I actually enjoyed it more than my entrée. It has a lightness to it, but also richly satisfying, especially with the sourdough. For the entrées, we went back to our favorites from last time which was the cavatappi and the rockfish. I enjoyed the cavatappi more but I was trying to get more protein and less simple carbs so I stuck with the rock fish. This time the fish was not a great piece and had very little edible protein because of the bloodline running down the center of it, so for $38 it felt a bit stingy because I needed more of the fish than the slightly over spiced rice and sausage. Did not feel like a good choice for the evening. I did not finish and went back to my appetizer to satisfy any hunger pains left. Definitely disappointed that there was no specials for the evening and a lot of the menu seems pretty similar to the last time we were there. Also seems like fewer choices at least for the small plates. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and again really enjoyed the atmosphere. However. Everything seems overpriced these days but even though prices haven't shifted that much at LL on this occasion, $172 after tax but before tip seemed a bit much for Richmond. Feels like everything is a few dollars over what the price point should be especially if it's not done to perfection. We will probably go back but not for a long while bc of price but also because of menu options. There are several restaurants in Church Hill that bring more bang for your buck.

At least Dinamo's is on a corner, so there are a few parking options. We managed to get a close spot, thankfully. The restaurant was bustling and buzzing with life when we stepped in. There was no hostess stand, so we hovered around the entrance awkwardly, wondering where we should be, waiting for the fast-thinking servers and bartenders to find us a spot. This is likely due to the limited seating space, and it works until your party is larger--definitely call ahead if that's the case. We were seated at a two-top in the crevice between the bar and the kitchen. The aromas of the smoke-filled room captivate us, our imaginations conjuring different dishes. We quickly received our waters, place settings, and menus, as the servers dutifully helped each other where they could. I decided on the brocoletti (noodles that look like onions) with beans, sausage, and polenta. My partner ordered the plain white pizza. We received some complimentary bread as we waited for the meal. We used the olive oil, salt, and pepper at the table to give it a little pizzazz. My dish arrived scaldingly hot, so be careful with the polenta especially. The beans and sausage were perfectly seasoned, with the brocoletti noodles taking on the flavors of the dish's other ingredients. The white pizza was punchy, the parmesan being the star of the show. The crust was soft and chewy with a bit of crisp. We boxed up half of our meals, leftovers to enjoy again later, and we opted to try the chocolate tort with the cherries and cream. The cherries should not be optional here, IMO. They take the dessert from beautiful and delicate to decadent. The chocolate tort was delicate; the cherry glaze and depitted cherries pushed my taste buds to their limit. It is a simply wonderful concoction; hence the reason for forgetting to take its photo (remnant plate and spoons pictured). Our experience at Dinamo's was fabulous from beginning to end. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a curated American/Italian menu (with some seafood specials mixed in) lovingly cultivated by the chefs. I look forward to revisiting Dinamo's in the future to explore its other specialized menu items.
