A friend was visiting from AZ and this was our agreed lunch choice. I would like to start with I WILL NOT return to this restaurant. We entered and were greeted with " do you have a reservation" in a very un-inviting tone. We both said no. If she said follow me, it was faint. We knew to follow her. I should have walked out !!! The Restaurant was practically empty !! Maybe a total of 20. We walked up a small ramp that lead us to a larger dining area where we saw a few guests. At our table standing was a youthful warm smile waiting that made us feel ok to stay. I overheard someone calling the name of the woman at the door, and they said Patricia. Our server's name was Jocelyn and she was very delightful. Our server made suggestions and explained that most of the pasta is made in house. Still observing and listening. OMG, the woman is the manager. Mam, I'm sure you will be pleased to know that we will NOT return. She walked by several times smiling and conversing warmly with other guests. This is an authentic looking and a bit dated Italian Restaurant. I'll be brief here. I had the spaghetti and meat sauce. The pasta had that obvious taste of homemade and the sauce as well. The bread was homemade with the potential to be good, if it was warm and soft, not crunchy. I had the salad packaged to go. Appetizer was fried zucchini that was golden brown, crunchy and flavorful. We did have to ask for the olive oil and vinegar though; did not know it was an option until we saw another table getting it. The carbonara was delicious! The interior was nice. Walked in for Monday lunch on the week of Christmas. Interior was clean and spacious. A tall Christmas tree was at the back area. Service was great. Our server Patricia was attentive and told us about the menu and some things not on the menu. The complimentary bread at the start was very good. Just the right amount of crunchiness at the outside but very chewy on the inside. I love it. Mussels in white sauce was good. The bucatini pasta special that had sausage and broccoli rabe in white wine and garlic sauce was solid. Flavorful and not very heavy. Tiramisu della Famiglia was okay. The homemade pistachio and chocolate chip bread pudding with vanilla ice cream was huge. It's meant for sharing with at least another person. I ordered the beet & burrata salad and the spaghetti aglio e olio (no meat). Service was shaky -- my salad came out with bacon at first, and only after I pointed it out did they bring the correct one. Food was fine but nothing memorable. The beet salad was okay, the spaghetti was decent but not standout. Bread was offered, but overall flavors felt pretty average for the price. We sat on the patio since we had our dog, which I appreciated, though there were no outdoor heaters. All in all, a solid enough Italian option, especially if you need dog-friendly seating, but the execution and taste weren't strong enough to rate higher. I have been here many times. And I have to say I was pretty disappointed by my experience last night. I usually like coming here because they make their own pasta is not pretentious in the service is usually good but that's not the experience I had last night. I just felt the waiter was pretty apathetic. We sat down and a table sat down five minutes after us and got their bread right away. it just didn't feel like he cared about the table. My boyfriend's dish was incredible and maybe that why my dish was not good. He had the ravioli with beef in this incredible sauce. I asked the waiter for recommendation of three dish. He recommended the fettuccine Alfredo and I have to say I found the sauce terribly watery and I only ate less than a half of it. Yeah I took it home cause I don't believe I'm wasting food and maybe I could fix it at home. Came here for some Italian food and I ended up ordering the Shrimp scampi($24) and cesear salad (+$2). The complimentary bread was a bit mid. The food came out in about 20+ minutes. It looked very appealing and the flavors were quite solid. The noodles were cooked to an al dente and the sauce was light, however it needed some citrus to up it. The shrimp was flavorful but could have more than 5 pieces. The portion size was good, enough to have about half a meal worth of leftover. Staff was friendly, lighting was a little dim inside (probably because of the fancy vibes). Overall it was a pretty good experience for Italian food, I would come back again! Really enjoyed the fried calamari and beef ravioli. The calamari was perfectly battered and fried. The beef ravioli tasted freshly prepared - from the tomato sauce to the pasta to the beef filling. Make sure to save some bread to eat with the tomato sauce! The salad also was sizable with fresh greens. My wife and I went here with friends. I was quite excited to try this neighborhood restaurant, having grown up blocks from it. I first went for lunch and had a reasonably good experience, so I thought we'd go there with our friends. This experience wasn't so good. One of our guests ordered the fried oysters and asked for a side salad to accompany his choice. He was told by the waiter that the side salads could only be provided with the meals with which they were listed on the menu. We were told the manager had given instructions previously to the waiters that the small side-salad could not be ordered, not at any price. Only the large salad could be ordered as a stand-alone. So much for trying to meet the customer's wants. Multiple times, a woman came from the back of the restaurant, presumably from the kitchen, with two small children in her arms. She was making sure the entire restaurant knew they were her foster children she was hoping to adopt. She said that she wanted them to see where mommy was when she wasn't at home. A commercial kitchen is no place for small children, and displaying how virtuous you are isn't an appropriate activity for a restaurant employee, or manager, or owner - whatever she was. We've been ordering pizza from Pizza Express (their sister restaurant) for a long time, so we finally gave Casa Italiana a try. We made a reservation (not necessary on a Thursday night) and the back of the restaurant was so pleasantly dead quiet, we could actually hear each other speaking. Our waiter was quiet and attentive and lovely. We ordered the zucchini appetizer, probably the best zucchini frites I've ever had, the eggplant parm and the lasagna. The lasagna was good but left something to be desired. The eggplant parm was exactly the way I like it. The tomato sauce is light and tastes like fresh tomatoes. The order arrived in great shape and pretty fast. I order the pappardelle and grilled octopus. The pasta came with a salad and rolls. I am a fan of pappardelle and always in search of a great one that duplicates my experience overseas. The pappardelle came in a sausage ragu sauce which has a little kick to it. It's meaty and tasty! The pasta itself is not as al dente as I'd like and it has a taste/smell that reminded me inside of my fridge... it certainly didn't say it's handmade or anything but I have a hard time getting over that smell. Could just be me. And I love grilled octopus! It was very tender and great tasting. It's a bit awkward though because it's an appetizer but priced like a main course while the portion is big enough (lots of beans) to be an entree. And in comparison to the pasta, just a dollar more, can be two meals... ahhhhh the American dreams! I think the food is in high quality. TLDR; solid, reasonably priced Italian food Vibe - this isn't the restaurant if ambiance and aesthetics are important for your experience. It seems like it's supposed to be fancy but the decorations are a bit off for that. The lighting is extremely low for lunch time and the restaurant was pretty empty. Service - our waitress was kind, personable and prompt. She gave honest recommendations which I value. Food - the food was good enough to make the rotation when we're craving Italian food but not stand out enough for me to recommend it to someone else. Octopus appetizer was disappointing and didn't feel worth the $19 price tag :( mainly because our waitress said it's her favorite app and others on Yelp mentioned it as well. Casa Italiana was one of the first restaurants I came to in the Richmond area back in 2020. I was here for a job interview, staying at a local hotel, and needed somewhere to eat late in the evening. Despite being within 20 minutes of closing, they graciously served me a wonderful meal that I was looking forward to replicating again. Fast forward to 2024, I took my fiancé here for dinner. Hoping the octopus appetizer was still on the menu (it was), I was also looking forward for something a bit different as well. Despite not having reservations, we were seated promptly and greeted by our waiter. The decor and ambiance are inviting as is the italian music that's playing through the speakers. Not too loud, and certainly makes for a nice experience. We were served our drinks and placed our order. I chose the chicken piccata and she opted for the seafood risotto. We also ordered the Octopus appetizer which was well made and quite tasty. Salads arrived full and fresh. Nicely made. We were also served some house-made bread with real butter that made for a nice accompaniment. Finishing our salads, our waiter returned within a couple of minutes with our meals. The chicken piccata was stacked over a bed of spaghetti with buttery wine sauce and capers. Her risotto was well decorated with a variety of seafood including mussels, shrimp, squid, and had fairly creamy texture, but the rice still had a bit of a bite to it and the dish could have been a bit more creamy. Still, the flavors were quite good. My chicken tasted okay, but was a bit tough in areas and a bit bland. What really stood out was our waiter. He was the epitome of what I would consider to be professional, prompt, and courteous. Definitely someone who has the caliber to be providing service in a more upscale establishment. He definitely made up where the meal fell slightly short. They are fortunate to have him. I would recommend Casa Italiana for its diversity in meal options, excellent service, and nice ambiance. Came here with my family for dinner. The ambiance is pleasant, and the restaurant is nicely decorated for the holidays. However, the music was slightly annoying. It consisted of generic Christmas covers, with some songs, such as "Do You Want to Build a Snowman," playing multiple times. Some of the staff seemed disengaged or simply ready to go home. From the moment I walked through the door and the host asked for our reservation name, it was apparent that the work environment wasn't the best. Our waitress was not very friendly either and appeared visibly annoyed to be there. The food was decent overall. We ordered calamari and bruschetta as appetizers, and both were excellent. The Caesar salad, however, was disappointing. There was far too much dressing and it tasted similar to pre-packaged supermarket salad kits. I ordered the chicken parmesan, which was fairly good, though the chicken was slightly overcooked. My family ordered the fettuccine Alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and a braised beef dish, and they had no complaints. Overall, it was an okay experience. When this spot was suggested for dinner, I was skeptical, but went along with the choice in the spirit of trying something new. First off, the fung shui of the place is off, beginning with the entry point. Walk to the side that faces Three Chopt, and when you enter, even that space seems strange. If you end up having to go to the restroom, you'll see a whole other side to the restaurant that you didn't know existed. Feng shui aside, the food is mediocre. We tried the calamari appetizer, which was okay. Nothing special. I got the salmon over spinach risotto. He got the seafood pasta. My salmon was overcooked. The spinach was undercooked and all stems. Everything needed salt (even the calamari). His seafood pasta was also overcooked. Calamari was rubbery. Everything LOOKED good, but taste-wise, was subpar. I'm sorry to say that the best part of this meal was the complimentary bread. Service was fine, but a little strange. Seemed too practiced and inauthentic. A metaphor for the entire experience. This place feels like your grandparents' Italian. You might like it if you haven't had really great Italian and nothing to compare it to. Love this place I had pulled 12 hours and was exhausted... saw something on Facebook about them having pizza night on Tuesday.... It sounded just up my alley. The pizza with arugula, prosciutto and shaved Parmesan oh my God... It was amazing and I got a nice glass of red wine to go with it. The poor bartender has been working all day and they were having HVAC issues and it was freezing in the bar, but I decided to sit at the bar anyway to support the bartender. First and only visit to this shady restaurant. I placed an order of baked spaghetti to go. When I got home and opened the salad it looked fresh and inviting. However, when I put the salad on my plate, I realized the top leaves on the salad were green and the entire rest of the salad was tinged reddish brown color wilted showing it was several days past a fresh salad date. It was obviously setup to hide the salad was minutes the trash. Have me pay for quality food and then give me trash. My favorite go to items are the fried mozzarella, Cesar salad with anchovies, casa meatball, chicken Parmesan, and chicken Alfredo with spinach and sun dried tomatoes (added). Every dish is authentic and made fresh to order. The homemade rolls are also very filling and dangerous because you can't just eat one! The servers are very knowledgeable and always have great recommendations. They are also very attentive and customer service driven. We like that their dining area is separate from the bar. Nice ambiance for a local and casual restaurant. It's nice that they offer a few house selections for vino each priced at $32. We figured we'd give it a try so we ordered the House Pinot Noir from USA. They brought us and opened the house pinot noir from Italy instead (retails for $3 per bottle) which we sent back. Either they were being cheeky trying to get nearly a 10x margin or they made a mistake grossly in their favor. Left a bad impression. But at least they fixed the mistake after we politely raised it to their attention. According to the menu, our entrees came with a house salad but our waitress said our entrees came with either a house salad, caesar, or soup. So, we both choose caesar and later found out there's an up-charge for that. Cheeky of the waitress. If there's an up-charge then it doesn't "come with". Little surprises like that that leave a bad impression. That said, the caesar salad was good. The entrees were meh. Four of us went here for dinner on a Friday evening. The restaurant is located in a small shopping area so there is adequate parking for it. There is also indoor and outdoor seating available. We got there and even though it was fairly busy, we got seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly and did a good job. We had an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, which I was the only one that like them.. LOL and a plate bread with some cheese and sauce. We ordered a mix of entrees... lasagna, a dish of seafood pasta with red sauce and grilled chicken caesar salads. the waitress told us that all of the pasta and sauces are made on site. I would have liked our server to let us know there were specials. Our salads were good. The dressing was served on the side. I left over most of my salad and the server offered to pack it up for us. With the delicious balsamic dressing the bone in veal is on a bed of spinach. The gnocchi on the side is delicious. I finished all the gnocchi but left over lots of the veal and spinach I did eat the bone so we wouldn't need to take that home. Finished with a shared dessert. Spouse did not enjoy the risotto. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. This was the worst restaurant I have ever been to. The server my friends and I had was beyond rude from the start. We waited a minimum of 12 minutes for 8 simple drinks. Then the food came out and it was horrible. Some of it was cold, some of it was burnt/overcooked. I ordered the chicken parmesan the chicken was tough and dry, they obviously tried to cover that up with the sauce, but the sauce was bland and the spaghetti was over cooked. One of my friends ordered a BLT, his bacon was beyond bunt and he couldn't eat it. Another friend got a salad with salmon added, the salmon was dry and overcooked. 3 friends got the chicken alfredo. all 3 agreed the dish was bland and the chicken was dry/tough. The only edible part of any dish we got was the fries that came with the BLT and a friends burger, the burger was dry and the bun was hard, and the pizza a friend got. The server was again rude and very inattentive. She only came to check on us well after we had our food and was complaining about it. It was not busy nor loud so we know she heard us. She repeatedly went to another table to talk about us to those guests there. We were sat by the kitchen and they left the door open and one of my friends saw a very visible, very large bottle of flu medicine ad we could clearly hear someone in the kitchen coughing where the food was being made. That alone would have ruined my appetite, let alone the way the food tasted. When we informed the server that we were unhappy with our meals, instead of offering to remake anything, we would have refused, or offering to comp anything, she told the chef who is also the owner apparently, and the owner sent her back out with the most insincere apology. He was sorry we had a bad experience but hoped it would be better on our next visit. There will be no next visit. After all of this, you would think it would be over, but no. One of my friends who had the chicken alfredo was only able to keep it down for less than half an hour before she rushed to the restroom to throw up, which we all heard from our table. She ate the most out of everyone. I just got home 40 minutes ago and just finished throwing up my own food. $300 for food that no one liked or finished and crappy/rude service. 0/10 would not recommend. It's obvious this menu is old family recipes but with the Chef's amazing training there are great new recipes. My visit to Casa Italiana was a nice one. With a dimly lit aesthetic and rather quiet ambiance (at first), my husband and I enjoyed the setting. The waitress brought us a glass of water and freshly baked bread with butter, which my husband and I enjoyed. However, the butter was a bit crumbly, almost as if it had been frozen, which made spreading it on the bread a bit troublesome. Other than that, I ordered the chicken parmesan, which was a fairly good dish, but didn't have a "wow" factor for me. It tasted like what you'd expect a chicken parmesan to taste like, with slightly less seasoning. Moving along, my husband ordered the Carbonara and Fried mozzarella. The Carbonara was good as well, a little too much food, but who's complaining about that? The flavors were light on the carbonara, but that made it easier to digest. The perfect amount of parmesan was the icing on top of the Carbonara. The fried mozzarella was great, no complaints! We enjoyed our time at Casa Italiana. It seems to get pretty active towards dinner time, so if you're a mellow diner like us, I'd recommend getting a seat just before 4 pm. read more
