Posting this review on behalf of my girlfriend's experience. I would give this place 0 starts if possible. She took her car in for an oil change, they did extra work on the car she didn't approve and tried to charge her $250!!!!! Are you kidding me?? The owners son who did the work also said the "credit card machine is broken" and it was cash only. She refused to pay - the owner got involved, admitted they should've checked with her before doing the extra work, and then still charged her $150. They charged her card, so the whole broken card machine was bullshit obviously. When she still objected to $150 for an oil change, the owner started screaming at her. They called her a "STUPID CUNT" TO HER FACE. Complete verbal abuse!! A police report was filed against them for verbal assault. DO NOT GIVE THESE SCUMBAGS YOUR BUISNESS. They scam customers, do work that's not approved, and are incredibly rude and verbally abusive if you don't just give into their scam. Reading other reviews, this is not the first time this sort of situation has happened either. DON'T GO HERE!!!!! read more

Dave at Chiara Auto in East Boston located on Maverick St is an auto mechanic who I would not recommend to anyone. I had a bad experience with him where he put a bogus part in my car which in turn caused an additional code to go off, he then replaced additional parts that were not needed in an attempt to "fix" his shoddy repair work because he was too arrogant to believe there could possibly have been something wrong with the original part he used. Ultimately this led me to pay a reputable dealership to replace what he put in. Six months later with the new parts, my car is running perfectly with no issues. Dave did not honor his work as he is obligated to do, even after many attempts at contacting him for a resolution, and was condescending, arrogant and unprofessional in his attitude. He essentially denied there was anything wrong with his work. Under Massachusetts law, you have the right to have shoddy work repaired at no charge. It's worth noting that Dave was ***arrested for domestic abuse*** as others have mentioned on Yelp (its public record, Google it), which is a serious safety concern for women who may be considering using his services. I would especially warn women to avoid using this mechanic. read more

*STAY AWAY - they called me a DUMB C*NT and I had to file a police report* I have never been treated with so much disrespect in my life. I came in for an oil change and alerted them that the drain plug doesn't come off so they would have to siphon the oil out the top. They said that was no problem and I left them my car. 2 hours later, they called and said that since they couldn't get the cap off, it would be $250 for the oil change. I came into the shop and disputed the outrageous charge and we got into an argument. Both Doug and Dave were incredibly rude and condescending to me. I never consented to any increase in the work done and they did not give any heads up that the price would be more than expected. If I had known, I would not have agreed to the 'extra work'. After the conversation, we settled on $150 - I agreed and gave them my card. While he was running my card, he said 'you'll probably dispute this with your credit card company'. I didn't respond which he took as a yes and he started screaming at me. His son called me a 'dumb c*nt', 'stupid b*tch', and a 'f*ggot'. I ended up calling the police to file a verbal assault report. If a man is capable of treating a person like this at his own business I can only imagine how he acts in public. Please save yourself and do not go here. read more

My AC was not working so I brought the car to Chiara's. They fixed it at an extremely reasonable price and had it back to me within a day! I also asked them to check on my oil which I thought was leaking. Dave told me it was a slow drip, expensive to fix and not urgent at this point. He also said I could bring the car back every 1000 miles or so and he'll let me know when it becomes an issue I need to fix. I witnessed the absolute worst treatment of a customer at this establishment that I have ever experienced in my life. Dave was charging a customer for work that she had not approved and furthermore had specifically asked him not to do when she dropped off her car and she was very calmly asking why she was being charged for work she did not approve. Dave immediately started violently yelling at her saying he had no memory of the conversation and proceeded to call her obscenities like "a stupid cunt" and "bitch". I couldn't believe that I was witnessing this at a place of business. Additionally, Dave was trying to force her to pay cash saying the credit card machine was broken. When Doug appeared, she asked him if she could pay with a credit card - he said "of course" so Dave was either trying to launder money under the table or he was worried she would try and dispute the invalid charges. There are so many problems with this place of business - dishonest, verbally abusive so much so that the police came and watched the shop video with the evidence and filed verbal abuse charges against Dave - his behavior warrants professional help or is a sign of drug use, but in either case this guy is unstable (other reviews suggest the same), absolute worst customer experience. What a little gem in Eastie! My boyfriend has an old, 18 year old truck, that needed some work on the brakes and fuel line and they did a phenomenal job tinkering with it and it was done within a day. My car needed new tires plus an oil change and I bought them online, had them shipped to Chiara's and it was all taken care of within 2-3 hours. They are also great at communicating. I couldn't be more grateful I found this place, I thought my car was done for and they called me saying they completely fixed it and for cheap! The men working there were extremely pleasant which is really hard to find. I dropped my car off after work and had it at lunch the next day. I found Chiara's had the best reviews and as it turned out, they are literally around the corner from me! Stopped by a month ago to have an oil change without an appointment and it was good to go not long after dropping it off. Fast forward to yesterday my 4Runner was making a terrible clunking noise in the rear. Brought it over to them around 1pm and it was ready to go around 3 with brand new rear struts. When I moved to East boston I no longer had access to a garage with a lift and shortly after trading in my car I discovered the new cars tranny was leaking. I brought it in and they thought it was an axle seal so they replaced it for under $80, unfortunately it turned out the transmission case was also damaged and it needed a new clutch and transmission. I had them do the work because I needed the car. Without prior notice they had the car ready before the end of the next day and the car was driving perfectly. They were honest, fast and fair with their price. They also waived the cost of doing the axle seal when the $80 quick change turned into a $1000 nightmare. read more

I recently bought a used car (about two months ago) and found numerous problems with it right away. I brought it to Chiara to have then look at it. They told me that I needed new rotors an brakes for all my wheels, and gave me a quote for parts and labor. Being unsure about what to do, I also brought my car to other shops to see what they thought. They had similar diagnosis for the car but they're quotes were much higher, generally by about 200-300 more than Chiara's quote. These guys are a very honest father son auto repair shop. And even though the garage is smaller than many of the big shops (only two spots and a driveway), the honest work and the lower prices make it worth the wait if you need simple work done. I'd call ahead to make sure that they are not too backed up that day. read more

When my check engine light went on a year ago, I brought my car to a place in Newton and they charged me over $200 to run a bunch of tests only to tell me it was a faulty leak detection pump (there was no actual leak, nothing mechanically wrong with the car). So basically I paid $200 to have them tell me it would cost another $400 just to make a light turn off. These guys are not like that. When my transmission started having problems, I found Chiara's online and decided to bring it to them because they were close to my house and had good reviews. Now I know why they have such good reviews. They told me it was low on transmission fluid and filled it back up for a total of $35, but warned me the transmission might be on its way out because of having been driven for so long with low fluid. Unfortunately, they were right and I had to bring it back when the problem came back. Before I left it with them the second time, they told me it might be something other than the transmission as the engine was also acting strange and there was an evap system error code. They could have told me it was something minor, charged me $100 or so to replace some random part, then when the transmission inevitably kept having problems, I'd have to keep coming back. They didn't do that. They did some additional tests and determined the transmission was shot. They charged me nothing for the tests and referred me to some places that might be able to rebuild the transmission. One of them even drove around the block with me so I could show him what was happening and ask some questions before I left it with them. They answered all my questions patiently, courteously, and respectfully. My current car isn't worth what it would cost to replace the transmission, but I'll hopefully be getting a new car soon, and when I do, I'm definitely bringing it to these guys. read more

We recently moved to Boston from Seattle and were nervous about finding a trust-worthy mechanic. We had an ongoing issue with the car that other mechanics and AAA "experts" claimed was the battery. We eventually had to tow our car to Chiara (which we picked because it was closest to our house), and they were so helpful and honest. They fixed the issue immediately (turned out it was the starter) and now our car works perfectly again - no other issues have ever popped up. They were done within 20 minutes, and that includes them having ordered the part to be delivered for us. We're so relieved to find a great mechanic close by, and one who was so helpful and honest. A couple days ago, my headlights went out. Since both went at the same time, I thought maybe there was an electrical problem, so I decided to go to a mechanic, just in case. The Internet led me to Dave at Chiara Auto Repair, and I'm super happy it did! I called in the morning, and even though they were closing early because the heat is ridiculous today, Dave told me to come on by and he'd take a look. He checked my fuses, which were all fine, and then went ahead and looked at the lights themselves. Sure enough, they had both burned out at the same time! He even showed me out to check the lights myself. He had to get a new headlight, so I went home and came back, but he had everything done within an hour. HONEST , FAST SERVICE. We were traveling through the Boston area with just a couple hours to spend walking around enjoying the city. Pulled into a parking lot and realized our van was REALLY leaking coolant. We basically ended up at Chiaras because it was close and when we called they said they would do their best to get us on the road again ASAP. We were prime candidates for ripping us off but they were totally honest, super friendly, and true to their word in getting us back on the road ASAP. Initial they thought they'd have to replace the entire radiator but a closer look showed they could fix it in under an hour ....FOR LESS THAN $50 total. They also gave us cold bottled water and were kind to us and our 2 toddlers. All of that to say Chiaras auto repair was truly a God-send. read more

I had read good things on Yelp! about Chiara and the tow truck driver reinforced those today when I needed to take my car in for an electrical issue. The problem turned out to be a bad battery purchased from AAA a few months ago, and not the alternator as AAA had told me when they came out to jump the car twice. Dave at Chiara Auto Repair called me right away and informed me that it was, in fact, the battery. The guys at Chiara then hosted me while I struggled with AAA for the next four hours trying to get them to honor the battery warranty. Throughout it all, the guys at Chiara were supportive, helpful, strong advocates and friendly. I am sure that another garage would have figured out a way to charge me for something after seeing the car arrive by tow truck, but these guys did their very best to make sure that I didn't pay anyone anything. Lots of folks know how to fix cars, but the good mechanics are also good neighbors. I recommend Chiara to everyone in East Boston and beyond. read more
