Back on June 13th, 2023 I was searching for a Male Love Bird. A breeder said that he had four females and one male that he had put in the Bird store of Chicago Reptile. I called there to verify and drove 50 miles down to Orland Park to purchase the Male Love Bird. Named him "Baltimore". They did DNA testing on the Birds and had marked the male with a black dot on it's head with a marker. I got the bird (with the dot) in excellent health, with a DNA Certificate (from Genetics Bird Testing) stating that this was a male bird. Well, here we are, April 3rd 2024 and my male bird has produced three eggs as of today. Immaculate Conception? I think NOT!! Needless, to say, I am really disappointed. I already have an older male who is very tame. Females are messy, want to build nests, swim in her seed dish, and develop a nasty disposition after laying those eggs. I wanted another male. Someone really screwed up here. Therefore, the reason for the poor rating. read more

I bought a hand-fed parakeet Jan 02 2021. Once home, he was lethargic, would not eat nor play with his toys. Jan 04, I took him to a vet specializing in birds where he stayed overnight for tests. Results were two bacterias, in his GI tract and his crop. He needs meds administrered by mouth (eye dropper). 20 days later, he's still taking meds and in an incubator at the vets. Chicago Bird House (aka Chicago Reptile House) denied that the bird could possibly have picked up this bacteria in their store, where both reptiles and birds are sold and where he'd been for over 30 days. Chicago Bird House have at the top of their contract that a sick bird can be exhanged for a healthy bird but I was already into both a monetary and emotional attachment to the little guy and was not about to get another bird here. read more

I routinely visit their reptile house to get some food for animals that I keep in my classroom, so, I finally decided to check out their bird house. As I did, I saw a decent selection of unusual birds. Cages were clean and the birds looked well cared for. They also had some that were boarding. I loved it. The prices seemed to be right on target for the kinds of birds they had. As usual, they were pretty busy when I went there. That does seem to be a good sign as a business that is routinely busy indicates its popularity that you don't see in reviews. while there, I did have some questions about raising certain ones that I am considering. The employee I spoke with seemed very knowledgeable. It was a very cool place. I don't see places like this too much any more. It really is like finding an oasis in the desert! read more

I love the Chicago Bird House. The girls that work there are so loving towards the birds. They even hand fed my parrot (Boo) when he was boarding there. They are very knowledgeable about birds and I can't say enough great things about the Chicago Bird House. read more

The Chicago Bird House is small but since they board birds, it's a lot of fun just to visit. There are usually a few cockatoos or macaws in there just waiting to smart-off to you, not to mention cockatiels and conures who are used to humans and so come to the bars of their cages to talk to you. As far as birds in stock, they seem always to have canaries and finches that are ready to go. You might have to wait for the other birds, but it is worth the wait. They raise several species of birds (parakeets, cockatiels, conures, I think) in the back of the store--make sure to ask to go back there. If you put a down payment on a bird, you can come in and visit him or her a few times in the comfort of the back room. I myself purchased a beautiful and completely tame parakeet who is sitting on my shoulder supervising me right now. What they have in abundance are supplies for every type of bird, from finches to macaws. They have several different types of healthy food and pellets, not to mention seed, and a plethora of bird toys. Again, the toys run the gamut from those appropriate to small birds to large ones. I like how they have bins from which you can create your own toys. You'll find every bird accessory in abundance. The store is a little cramped, and I wish they had more birds for sale on hand, but I really, really like this place. If you're anywhere near Orland, check it out. It's attached to the Chicago Reptile Store, which is much larger and more spacious, so if you are into reptiles and fish, they have those, too. There's a pretty funny dichotomy in the store: On the west side you have the bird store, run by an energetic young woman and populated with kids and bird lovers, and on the east side is the reptile shop, run by a couple guys who wear Harley shirts and frequented by the same as well as they weird dudes you went to high school with, the guys who had unfashionable hair (mullets, perhaps), listened to ungodly heavy metal music, wore square glasses and were successful in neither womanizing, sports or, as the years churn on, keeping excess weight off. But they love their reptiles. I heard one fellow exclaim to his friend, a Ronnie James Dio acolyte who was struggling to follow the hyperactive iguana that was marked down 20%, that, in his opinion, "these snakes are tits!" After that, the pair went out to do some partying at the bar of the local bowling alley. As I said, it's a funny place. But I go back all the time. read more

February 20, 2015 With great reservation-due to a prior incident here in which our quaker parrot's flight feathers were visibly clipped too short--we took our girl in for routine grooming. She died. As she was in the process of having her wings clipped by an employee something happened, and suddenly, terribly, she was limp, lifeless, dead. Her near instantaneous death was preceded by a cracking noise and proceeded by significant internal bleeding. The employee, probably shocked and unsure of what to do, just gingerly placed her corpse back in the travel cage she had arrived in. As if to say, "here you go". My father, grief stricken and in a state of panic, rushed home to report what had happened. About 15 minutes after he had arrived home, my extraordinarily distraught mother called the store. The owner claimed to have no awareness of the situation. Which suggests that either his employee didn't feel compelled to tell him what had happened or that he was being dishonest. In either case, after a quick and unpleasant conversation, my father went back to the store for further discussion and to show the owner the body. First, the owners solution was to just offer a new bird. But not in a tactful manner befitting the situation. Not as a warm and meaningful extension of sympathy. But rather in a business casual manner, that felt little different than exchanging a broken gadget for a new one. There was a great insensitivity to the situation. Never was there a clear acknowledgement that she was more than a salable commodity. His next solution was to offer to have a necropsy performed by a veterinary clinic specializing in exotic animals. As we wanted answers, not restitution, we accepted this offer. In hindsight, we shouldn't have. The reason being that these were/are his vets. (As I'm writing this I'm looking at this clinic's crisp business card, the very card he had on hand to give to my father the day this all transpired) Considering that he owns a not inconsiderable business whereby he sells exotic animals, it seems to logically follow that he has an existing business relationship with the clinic. Without alleging any deceitfulness, I will say this clearly represented a conflict of interest. The procedure should have been performed by a third party clinic. To reiterate this point, he was given the results of the necropsy first, and in fact called as this clinic's unofficial representative to tell me what *hadn't* happened. Fine. I was expecting that. But we did call the clinic specifically asking for the small courtesy that the vet contact us with the results and a more thorough explanation. Naturally, I had to call their office and then had the pleasure of listening to some fine on-hold tunes for a bit. When the owner of the birdhouse called he gave me his glib condolences and then it was right down to business. According to him, his veterinarian found no signs of trauma, his business was absolved of wrongdoing. He suggested that it was stress or her environment-(which I think necessarily implies us)-not his employee that did her in. There was zero accountability. When I called the veterinarian she reiterated that there were no visible signs of trauma and then proceeded to essentially state that she really wasn't sure what had happened. She said birds are sensitive. (I feel that it should be noted that quakers are literally banned in some states because they are such hearty birds, e.g. there's a feral population in Hyde Park, and there was apparent hemorrhaging.) Additionally, minus the fact that she was dead, the vet suggested our girl was basically healthy. That there was some physiological anomaly that caused bleeding-(not hemorrhaging according to the vet)-and that our quaker may have unfortunately choked on her own blood. The vague and varied explanations for her death ranged from an aneurism to toxins. All explanations were uniformly inadequate and quasi-scientific, they belied the basic principle of cause and effect. Additionally, I would also point out that positing the possibility of an aneurism while suggesting the cause of death was not hemorrhaging seems like a striking contradiction. In any case, the necropsy was performed to no avail. It was entirely inconclusive and provided no closure. So, here's what I know- our healthy quaker parrot died in his store under the care of his employee. Some kind of adversity lead to this. Can I definitively say that there was negligence on the part of his business? No. Do I have lingering doubts? Yes. Her birthday was coming up in March, now instead of buying treats I'm paying for cremation services. We were the proud caretakers of a life that had value and meaning all its own. Her value wasn't found in her being just our pet, it was intrinsic. She had a personality, and her name was Vinny. read more

When our 8-month-old parrotlet, died unexpectedly after having him only 4 months (and paying $300), the owner was non-empathetic and acted as if he could care less. Not even as much as an "I'm so sorry to hear that." His reply was, "We give you 14 days to have them checked with a vet (which we did) and after that we can't help what happens to them." It was then I realized the owner could care less about the pets he is selling and more about the money he is making! Won't make that mistake again. read more
