My daughter told me about this place that's down the street from her apartment. In my mind, I envisioned it as a typical mall type food court. I couldn't have been more wrong! So many unique food options - Korean, Italian, Cuban, Hawaiian, a bakery, a produce market, and a mini mart. I chose Firenze based on my daughter's recommendation, and it was delicious. The market itself is on the smaller side, but it's a cool concept with a mix of local vendors and different cuisines all together. It has that casual food hall feel and is easy to walk through quickly. I stopped by a Turkish dessert spot (Vertige) and the service stood out right away. The server was super friendly and offered samples of everything, which I loved. The caramel tres leches was really good, definitely the highlight. I also tried the beef börek, which was just okay. I want it to be better. This food hall is super conveniently located in a transportation center near a bunch of office buildings. I've been there a few times for lunch and it is packed, like no tables available in the seating area so you have to take your lunch back to the office. They have a variety of cuisines. For a French market, they barely have any French food... I got a tomato basil soup from Smoked Meats station and it was just alright. The tomato flavour was way too tart and not very cooked down. I wish it had more herbs going on. They also had a cute pet bakery right near the street entrance. I got some soft sweet potato chews for Mandu and he really liked it. They also had dog beer (made of bone broth) and dog wine and I got the beer for Mandu. He didn'treally like it tho :((. Chicago French Market is a really good place to explore different kinds of food from different countries. We like to go in here and we always love the experience. There are a lot of food stand and the people are all friendly. Their smoothies are made out of frozen fruit. You can add pure maple syrup, protein powder, hemp seeds, agave nectar, cocoa powder etc in them too. They also have dank veggie bowls. You get rice, chickpeas, and a choice of sauce. All the sauces are hand crafted and made in house. The whole place is vegan, and gluten free except the teriyaki! I does not have a specific favorite in here because everything is literally great and something different in a good way. What's good more about this marketplace is you can have and pick anything you wanted and you will never be disappointed plus the prices are all fair and reasonable. It has various food vendors, so you can pop in and pick a bottle of water or something more substantial. I was excited to try Chicago's French Market (I love a global food hall), and the market is located right near the office. There were many offerings, from empanadas to sandwiches, but I gravitated towards the curry at Klay Oven. The menu featured various types of curries, each served over rice with a variety of sauces and a piece of naan. I ordered the aloo gobi because I love almost anything with cauliflower. I was served pretty quickly because there was no one else in line, and my food was handed to me, piping hot. When I sat down to eat my food, I realized there was hardly any cauliflower on the plate - it was mostly bland potatoes. There wasn't a whole lot of sauce leftover, so I didn't have anything to dip my naan into. While I was disappointed with this experience, there were several other vendors at the French Market that caught my eye (especially the bakery!), so I'm sure I will be back to give it another try. read more

It's gonna be made pretty quickly so don't expect the flavor to smack. We wanted to like it you know? You love the pace of Chicago and the feeling that there are cultures melting together here. But, the French Market just wasn't it. Also, I love some 80's music, but it's a French Market bro, play some French cafe playlist from Spotify or something. The theme here is more like workplace cafeteria than it is French marketplace. They've got a window at the back with some old pictures and that's about all the French theme you get here. I don't know who runs the spot but it could use some love and attention. Maybe the funds aren't there I'm sure it's hard. I finally had a chance to walk through the market. It's an "eh" from me. Pastries and coffee are great at Vanille (not the pumpkin pie though too spice-y), but outside of that I wasn't super impressed worth it if you're already in the area. We enjoyed a trip through the French Market the other day when we were down in Chicago. Now while they don't really have many "French" stands operating in the market, there were a number of very nice places to buy food, fresh produce, and the like. The Market is located in the basement of the Ogilvie Transportation Center, aka the Northwestern Train Station. The Market opens up to Clinton Avenue on the west and the basement level of the train center ... so one doesn't have to fight the elements to get here. With probably two dozen stands, you just walk through the indoor market and buy what strikes your fancy at each ... so it is a self-service kind of place. At the far end of the room they have an area set off with a few dozen tables and chairs, so you can eat whatever you brought to or bought in the Market. It is also a great place to cool your heels ... e.g., read a book with a cup of coffee ... if you have time to kill before your train arrives/leaves. I love this place and would put it past any Eataly I've been to anywhere. A few more fresh food vendors would improve it for sure though and probably take it beyond the business lunch rush. I've read a few of the reviews that say it's just another food court and in Chicago that might? be true? However, for most of the country a food court looks like the one at the mall or airport where Panda Express is battling it out with Adobo Fresh and Annie Anne's for business. Better markets exist than this one but it's nice to look around at the booths and counters. Chicago French Market is located next to the Ogilvie Transportation Center, making it a convenient stop for travelers coming and going. It's not big, which obviously means there's not that much of a selection. Even worse is that many of the vendors aren't even French. The ones that aren't French include Asian and Mexican. Another thing is that it's also expensive. It's for sure overpriced and there's pretty limited portions. The most expensive things are in the City Market at the entrance from the station. Filled with outrageously priced produce and premade items in plastic containers. The rest of the place has pretty good food though. Among the Asian options is B.I. Tea and Dim Sum. Go here for bubble tea. Also they have vegan dumplings. Mexican choices include Lito's Empanadas. These are good but small. Also they have a sushi bar. There's a few more places that are opening. Good for getting convenient food while traveling around here. It's just up the stairs from the trains so it's there if you need it. It is called the Chicago French Market...but I'm not sure what makes it French? It is primarily food vendors offering all sorts of cuisines (Indian, Mexican, Thai, American, etc). There were so many good places to choose from. It seemed to be a very popular lunch spot for all the local businessmen/women which made it a bit difficult to find a table. I kept it simple and went with Aloha Poke which did not disappoint. There is a dedicated sitting area which had both standing and sitting tables. It's not just that this is not an "authentic French" market. It's not actually French at all. Not the food, not the ambiance, not the coffee, not the music, not the desserts. It's like the tea from the Improbability Drive space ship in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, almost precisely exactly totally and in all ways not French. It is a huge improvement over what used to be the choices for relaxing, sipping, and munching in the Ogilvie Center. For the location prices are not bad, the best two stands are Southeast Asian, they are solidly okay. In the late afternoon and evening it's hard to get a cup of coffee, one place does stay open and serves up a good espresso, but only in paper cups. If you're an espresso drinker of a certain age, you share with me the feeling that it's a better experience sipping from a dainty espresso cup with a saucer. Of course if you're as old as I am, you might not remember this at all because it's hard to remember things. You know, memory is the second thing to go. Good place to meet someone, relax a little before or after a train ride. Just don't expect anything here to be French. At all. read more

The Chicago French Market is the very definition of a hidden treasure. If you're coming from the north or from the train platform there are not many signs pointing you where to go. The Chicago French Market is in the basement of the Ogilvie Transportation Center. It took me many years to discover this gem. Now that I know where it is, I try to go as often as I can. Despite its name it is home to many great restaurants covering a great variety of food. There is a great number of places to try with a wide variety to of cuisines to try. There are 21 vendors to choose from. My favorites are Vanille (French) and Krietkoten (be sure to try the french fries here). There is a huge mural of Paris in the seating area. This truly makes you feel like you're somewhere fancy. I highly recommend the Chicago French Market and will be returning every chance I get! read more

So, I order from here occasionally and am never disappointed. Today, was an order of Kathryn's Soul K-Soul Bowl with jerk chicken (she offers non-jerk spiced too), Vanille croissant, and a being Taco Tuesday, I felt the need for a chicken taco from Buen Apetito. (All websites available via the Chicago French Market website.) Okay, Kathryn's was killing me on Instagram. The K-Soul Bowl image had me breaking my no dairy, no meat (poor attempt at) lifestyle. I already know this gal is a fab chef, so let's try this jerk chicken mixed with corn, gravy all over her mashed potatoes. I'm not EVEN gonna attempt to put this into MyFitnessPal for fear it will crash the app. The K-Soul Bowl I received was 1.15lbs! Yep! Over one pound. Nope! Can't finish it. It's dinner (maybe breakfast) for tomorrow. I want to know, how in the world does this incredible woman make money? The portion I received for takeout should make other restaurants rethink! The taste is freaking delectable. And in my opinion, not too spicy. Soul food (which I found out from my buddy is code for comfort food) at its best. Not too salty, either. Kathryn's Soul... MY comfort food. 11 stars out if 10! Here's a tip (Bro tip, but I'm a gal), if you are part of the AAdvantage Dining program, Kathryn's Soul is listed on there. (Environmental & cost-saving tip for Buen Apetito: add a link asking if anyone wants the sauces. Save on plastic containers going in trash.) I'd actually give this taco a 10 out of 10. Well-filled, delicious chicken, awesome toppings. Last: Vanille... my croissant craving covered. Every time I bite into these incredible pastries, I feel like Emily in Paris and the first time she ever tried one too. It's love at first bite. Definitely a 10 out of 10! After I eat Vanille's croissants my French accent comes out and it's really thick... and I'm not even from France. I'm a Chicago gal...and with all these great restaurant options, I'm thrilled about that. The Chicago French Market is hidden located one level below the Ogilvie Transportation Center Train shed at the MetraMarket, but offers a worldly amount of food. At the French Market, you will not find regular American sandwiches and burgers only, you will find different ethnic foods from various countries and cultures. Each restaurant/vendor has a small stand that bangs out some tremendous food. Since COVID, more restaurants are opening up. Vanille Patisserie is on your right when you walk in from the concourse offering up sweet French desserts. The Suarez Market gives you a convenience store with prepackaged salads and sandwiches, snacks, and drinks. It also gives you deli style sandwiches and salads made to order. This is good to go if you're looking for something familiar. A couple other favorite vendors of mine are Saigon Sisters and K Kitchen. I also love getting some coffee from Cubano Bros. If you want Boba Tea, BI Tea and Dim Sum is great! There are a few more vendors that I want to try, Kathryn's Soul, Lito's Empanadas, Firnze, etc. There's a nice seating area on the side of the market, standing high tops and regular seating. Someone comes around and is always cleaning tables, so they aren't looking drabby and gross. You can also eat out in the MetraMarket concourse, but it's not as lively as eating inside the French Market. The hours are 7 am -6 pm on the weekdays, so you have time to grab late lunches there. This place is a ghost town on a sunny, beautiful Saturday afternoon during what should be the lunch peak. Based on my experience here, there's a reason for that. First of all, this place shouldn't be categorized as a public market, because it's not a marketplace at all. Essentially, this place is a food court, and a half-deserted one one at that. At least half of the quick-service restaurant stalls appear to be vacant. My wife and I just returned from a trip to Europe (including some time in Paris, France) and have been looking for a place where we can find some of the lovely ingredients and foods we experienced there that aren't sold at your local Jewel-Osco. While I appreciate that "European markets" in the United States do offer things from various European countries, one tiny, half-empty market stall with old, wrinkly jalapeños is not really enough to redeem The French Market's claim to being a "market". Look at Eataly by comparison: in addition to a food court and two sit down restaurants, it has all kinds of (Italian-dominant) retail, specialty counters, RTD&E items, and well-labeled produce available for purchase. Here, there's not even a French restaurant. There's barely a Belgian place with OK burgers, average fries, and, strangely, no condiments besides ketchup & chipotle aioli. Stopped by the French Market on our walk back from West Loop into downtown Chicago on a Saturday around lunchtime. Located in a train station, this market consists of rows and rows of food vendors mostly offering way more than just "French" food. I saw Australian, Asian, Hispanic, cuisines represented, in addition to a dog treats vendor as well. What's odd is that a lot of the vendor stands weren't open when we went. It was around 12 or 1 pm on a Saturday (Memorial Weekend) and yet still a ton of these places were closed, which was a bit puzzling. My friend and I got beverages from a crepe vendor and macarons from a different pastries stand. At the back of this "market," there are a bunch of small, Parisian style tables/chairs set up to make you feel like you're actually in France, which I thought was a nice touch, but because all of this is located indoors and with sort of low ceilings, it was hard to buy into the concept. This market was also a lot smaller than I had expected. There are about 3-4 hallways you can walk down in the market before walking out into the train station part of the building. Another spot I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but if I'm passing through and more things appear to be open, I might be convinced enough to check out some of the food vendors again for a quick bite. read more

We ducked in here for lunch and appreciated the large variety of foods this place had to offer. Not all of the places were open for lunch on a Monday, which I thought was odd, but maybe that's because of COVID. Who knows. My boyfriend got a cubano from Cuban Bros that he really enjoyed. I opted for the bento box from Blue Spot Sushi. And, man, that was a mistake. The miso soup was abysmal, super bland with just a few small squares of tofu. The chicken teriyaki was super dry and I watched the cook put it in the microwave, so that sure didn't do it any favors. The sushi rice on my California roll was falling apart before I even picked it up, so I was glad at least I didn't get any sushi. The salad's dressing was meh and the rice was cooked well at least. All of that to say, I would steer clear of Blue Spot. We also looked around some and I tried to get some frozen custard from the pastry shop at the front and was disappointed to learn that the machine had been broken. Some of the produce also looked a little off, so I'm not sure what the turn around on the produce is. It's definitely a good place if you're coming with a group of people with diverse taste...I'd just stay clear of the Japanese. read more
