We contracted with Chicago Green Insulation in October 2025 to spray closed cell foam insulation (BASF HFO) in our garage and attic -- a $4,500 job. We only learned a different, unspecified product had been used because we noticed the cans on the truck didn't match BASF's packaging and asked about it directly. When asked, Tom Decker never confirmed what product was actually being installed -- only that it was "closed cell." It was the person doing the spraying who told us the product had been switched to Polycon foam. We were never notified of this substitution before or during the job. The crew also ran out of material mid-installation, left the property for over three hours, and returned after dark to finish the job. We raised concerns about the foam's appearance within days. Six months later, once we were able to fully access the space, we discovered the foam in multiple contracted areas was not closed cell at all -- rather, a thin closed cell skin covering open cell foam underneath. This was confirmed through core sampling and consultation with Polycon's technical staff. This is not a cosmetic issue: the wrong product fundamentally fails to perform as the air and moisture barrier our roof assembly requires. When we told Tom Decker what we'd found, his first response was not to address the defect -- it was to ask why we had gone up into the space at all. When pressed further, he refused to take responsibility, disputed the timeline, and pointed to boilerplate contract language rather than addressing the fact that we did not receive the product we paid for. Also of note: when we needed excess foam trimmed back, Tom quoted us $1,200 for the work -- the same subcontractor who actually performed the trimming (same person who sprayed the foam) charged us directly $650 for that exact job when we asked him separately. Tom never conducted a final walkthrough and never sent a final invoice for the remaining balance -- for six months. If he intends to point out that we were never billed in full, that's exactly the point -- there was never a formal completion of this job in the first place. Tom may claim that one of the affected areas (a gable wall) was outside the written contract. We have his own text messages confirming he offered to spray that wall and agreed to do it -- it just was never added to the paperwork. Either it was in scope and the foam there is defective, or it was out of scope and he sprayed foam on our property without authorization. Both are his responsibility. We also discovered that Chicago Green Insulation Inc. and Thomas Decker personally currently have a $45,185.17 judgment against them in Lake County (Case No. 2025AR00000938) and a soon-to-be-finalized default judgment in Cook County for $16,702.61 (Case No. 20251124549) -- both filed by their own material suppliers for nonpayment. We had planned to pursue our own legal action, but given these existing judgments it's clear we would be unlikely to ever collect a dime -- so we're posting this instead, for anyone else considering hiring this contractor. We ultimately had to pay $3,658 out of pocket -- on top of the original deposit -- to have the defective foam removed and properly reinstalled by another company. We would not recommend this contractor to anyone considering spray foam work. read more

Chicago Green Insulation has been extremely difficult to work with, has not performed any work, and refuses to give us back our deposit. Tom visited in March and came off as arrogant as he pointed out the "wrong" things that other contractors had done. But he seemed knowledgeable about insulation. He sent me a quote that was wrong in nearly every way. I asked for it to be corrected before I would sign it and he agreed to have his project manager, Memo, come out for a second look. Memo was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what needed to be done without needing to be told. We discussed options and he left. It took Tom over a month to properly update his proposal with Memo's notes and it STILL wasn't entirely correct. But I decided to push forward knowing that Memo would do the work and not Tom. Tom asked for a 50% deposit. Not only is that higher than the norm but he refused to even schedule a date until he received it. Only after getting a date in mid-June did I send him over $16k. Tom did not start mid-June. He also did not respond to texts, emails, or phone calls. When we finally got him on the phone he said he was having problems and would start "soon". We asked him to please be more communicative because $16k was on the line. He promised to communicate more. This went back and forth as Tom continued to not communicate with us. Finally we asked for our deposit back, which the law guarantees us, and he refused. He tried to schedule another date nearly 2 months late that wouldn't work for us. We again asked for our money and haven't heard from him since. We trusted Tom and his reviews and we might lose $16k because of it. Make no mistake, Tom does not care about you or your project, he only cares about getting your money. As of today we still do not have our money and are going through the process of filing complaints and lawsuits. For anybody thinking about working with Tom or CGI, trust your gut and look for the red flags. They were there for me and I ignored them and now we're going to pay the price. read more

Tom's company did great work for us in 2024, so we trusted them to oversee a larger job this year. Tom took a very large up-front deposit and then never started work. We made the deposit in March 2026 and it is now August 2026 and he has completely ceased all communications. read more

I paid CGI $500 for an "energy audit". They claimed (orally) that this audit includes a written report, with FLIR photos and an ACH calculation. I now see that the contract -- fool am I -- quietly omits those promises. All my $500 got me (2 weeks later than promised, after nagging twice) was an estimate for $13K in additional work. CGI never sent FLIR photos nor an ACH calculation. Their "energy audit" isn't really an energy audit; it's just them getting you to pay for an estimate. I complained, and CGI did refund me my $500. But I wish they hadn't lied and wasted my time. read more

I greatly appreciate Tom and Chicago Green Insulation and would recommend them to anyone looking into insulation work. read more

I am a general contractor with 25 years in the building trades. I contacted Tom Decker at Green Chicago to discuss what I thought was going to result in a spray foam installation in one of my customers homes. Tom came highly recommended from an associate contractor who told me "he's a straight shooter and you will be impressed". So I contacted Tom and discovered this man absolutely lives up to his reputation. From the moment Tom picked up the phone I realized the guy wasn't trying to sell me anything but instead was genuinely trying to help me solve my customer's issue. In fact the issue will most likely NOT be solved by spray foam installation. In other words, he took an hour of his time on the phone with me, a total stranger, to listen, understand and analyze the problem, and then told me that what he offers is most likely not the most cost effective approach to this particular situation. He then guided me to another company he thought would be a better fit for my needs. I've been doing this a long time and it's not often you run into a guy like Tom Decker. Anybody else would have just sold me a pray foam job regardless. Not Tom Decker. What I also realized from my conversation with Tom is that he operates his company from an altruistic "big picture" perspective and he's got integrity. He could have easily sold me a spray foam job but instead chose to put my customer's best interest before his own knowing full well it would have been a sizable project. Tom also explained how his company helps the community by employing people that have had some "legal difficulties" in the past and gives them a second chance at gainful employment. This hit home with me as I am a former convict myself and is the reason I am self employed to this day. Everybody deserves a second chance. We've all made mistakes. What he's doing helps not just the guy he's giving the opportunity to, but it has positive ripple effects throughout the broader community. Very cool. My experience with Tom Decker at Chicago Green was an absolute pleasure. He could not have been more straightforward, professional, courteous, knowledgeable and an absolute class act. I am grateful to have found Tom and I look forward to dealing with him again. read more

I am new to property ownership and I've been finding most of my repairmen/construction dudes through google. I happened to find Chicago Green Insulation while looking for enviro friendly insulation. Now that it's actually getting cold outside I wanted to make my attic and garage warmer, they were both very drafty. The guys at CGI were done in a day. I have no idea how long this stuff usually takes, but that seemed pretty great to me. They were really friendly and left no mess behind. Both attic and garage are noticeably warmer. I used to hear a breeze whistle in the attic when it was really windy, but not anymore!!! I'm happy with the job and I'd definitely call them again. read more

Tom at Chicago Green Insulation is knowledgeable, experienced, and friendly. He has a passion for what he does. He's honest about his services and won't sell you a half-baked solution, even if you ask for one. I believe his services are best for new construction homes and total rehabs where the walls and roof are opened or will be opened anyway. If you're looking for additional reviews, check them out on Google. I recommend talking to Tom. read more

I writing this review as someone who didn't end up hiring Chicago Green Insulation. I called Tom to quote a spray foam job in my home. He called me back promptly to explain that while I could use the spray foam for my project, it would make more sense for me to use a less expensive, DIY method based on the parameters of my space. His transparency is what prompted me to write this review as I believe it speaks to his character. He could have easily quoted me the job or outright turned down the job. Instead he took the time to explain how I could use a different method, even though it was providing no value to him. read more

Tom is not as interested in making money as he is in helping people... He is a purpose driven values led man who is wildly knowledgeable about not only this topic but all adjacent topics... Extremely helpful read more

We are currently building a house in Evanston and came to Tom in a jam when our contractor told us the insulation company we were going to use was on a 2 week minimum delay. Our timeline could not have this. Tom was able to get us a reasonable quote, very quickly and answering all my questions very politely in a timely manner. He accommodated our schedule and got the job done on time and very soon after we scheduled. His crew was very careful to cover everything before spraying and their work was top notch. House passed the inspection by the city on the first inspection. Excited for many years of a tightly air sealed, well insulated home! read more

Tom and his team did an amazing job on our vaulted ceiling, if you're looking for a more natural and green solution Tom is your guy!

I would think twice about using this company. Scheduling was a nightmare! Every day there was an excuse and we had to reschedule. Very unreliable and unprofessional. I think I was dealing with the owner, and he still couldn't get it together. He never knew where his staff was and could never give me a straight answer. My advice.. get a few estimates with a job like this. On the fourth day of waiting to get this job complete this company still couldn't get it together. I finally gave up and couldn't waste any more time and decided to go with another company. read more

A+. Professional job. Patient with the circumstances of our construction. Would highly recommend.

Very informative with products and pricing. Even if Tom doesn't sell a product, he will recommend me to someone who may be able to help. I will call Tom at Chicago Green for all my insulation needs. read more

I was looking to insulate a crawlspace in an older 2 flat after having my pipes freeze the year prior in summer of 2017. After getting three estimates and discussing various types of insulation to use, I decided to go with Green Insulation primarily because Tom seemed more honest and knowledgeable than the other two guys. After 2017's December sub zero temps I'm glad I did as I had no issues with pipes freezing or complaints from my tenants. Now I am thinking about doing the attic of that same building. It only took a an afternoon of time and they made certain my crawlspace was ready for the insulation. read more

Tom and his entire team were great to deal with. Tom's careful and detailed explanation of the benefits of spray foam was very helpful. We had a few issues after the initial install, but Tom and his crew made us a priority and got everything fixed right away. Not much more you can ask of from a small business owner. Highly recommend these guys. The end product is fantastic and I'm looking forward to a more comfortable house for me and my family. read more
