After moving into our new home, our inspection report flagged that the attic insulation was marginal and recommended upgrading it to improve heating and cooling efficiency, as well as repairing areas where insulation had been disturbed. He and his associate scheduled us at their next availability--January 7 for removal of the old insulation and January 8 for installing new blown fiberglass insulation. Everything went smoothly, the work was clean and efficient, and they clearly take pride in doing things the right way. Long review - but well deserved ... Our 500 Sq Ft 'bonus room' above our garage was poorly insulated and absence an electricity space heater, temps would fall into the 40's in that room during single digit or below zero nights. There was a small maybe 20 Sq ft floor level sub-attic on the north side of the bonus room where temps were well below freezing on sub-zero nights and where we needed to place a space heater to keep a near-by water pipe from freezing. We contacted three home insulation companies to review our issue and provide a solution. Of the three, Rick at American Insulation Inc did by far the most thorough inspection of all areas - the bonus room and the garage below and the attic area above the bonus room. Rick was the only one who actually poked small holes in the walls and in the garage sealing to determine how well insulated the areas already where. As a contrast, the first company to come by, their person never entered our attic and really just did a visual review - mostly from the outside of our home. His main solution was to insulate the garage ceiling below our bonus room. Rick from American Insulation confirmed that the garage ceiling was already well insulated and had a completely different solution. Rick determined that the attic area above our bonus room only had around 4 inches of insulation and should have at least 10 inches. Also, there were areas on our attic where the insulation was poorly distributed. And the whole north facing wall didn't have any insulation at all, including the small sub-attic. We hired American Insulation, they completed their project in one day, and the improvement has been significant. During the past week, with temperatures reaching the single digits at night, temps in the bonus room (without using a space heater), maintained around 63 degrees. Since this room is above a garage - which we heat at 58 degrees during the winter, has three walls (north, south, and west) fully exposed to the outside, and is fully separate from the reach of the house, this room will always be colder. But now being able to keep the temps I this room in the lows 60's is a big 'win' for us. There was even some additional work in the quote than American Insulation was going to perform. But when they started that portion, Rick determined that this add'l work didn't need to be done and deducted the cost of that work from our final bill. American Insulation was already the low quote and Rick could easily not have told me and I would have paid the original quote and been very happy with the results. So besides providing the right solution at a reasonable price, Rick's informing us of this and reducing our bill shows integrity and that Rick is someone you can trust. Sorry for the long review. Rick and his team at American Insulation were top-notch from start to finish. Our issue was inadequate insulation in the attic of a two-story townhome. The second floor was 5-10 degrees (warmer in the summer, cooler in the winter) different from the first floor. Rick installed vent chutes in all of the roof rafters and added about 500 pounds of fiberglass insulation over the existing material, bringing it to an R-48 rating. I scheduled an appointment to get an estimate for insulating my attic in a third floor condo. I confirmed the appointment the day before. An hour after the tech was due to arrive, I called the office to hear that they cannot do third floors and apparently they didn't think it was worth calling me to let me know. Instead I waited at home for someone to show up and they didn't even bother to call and cancel. The reception office has no idea what's going on with the techs and vice versa. I had a good experience and apparent outcome with American Insulation. The roof of my house formed ice dams that developed periodically. 10 pound ice spears threatened impalement from the gutters above. My mind conjured melting ice slithering down inner walls. I asked 3 firms for attic insulation proposals. I was quickly schooled in building engineering, sealing air leaks and ventilation. The providers offered a variety of thoughtful solutions. I chose American Insulation because their proposed scope of work was right-sized for my 60 year old home. They also seemed confident about getting into some difficult spaces in the split level attic with a cathedral ceiling without having to rip open ceiling sections for access. And they provided reassurances on a few other issues. Rick and his assistant spread indoor mats and even salted my sidewalk for safe access to their truck. Once in the attic, Rick offered to remove a legacy indoor TV antenna. About that difficult space accessing the lower split level roof, there was some sawing and some grunting. But they managed to get insulation into an area Rick declared entirely devoid of any prior insulation. They also built a container around my whole-house attic fan to prevent the air current from blowing the new insulation. And they vented two bathroom exhausts out through the roof (Spring completion task). Administratively, I got good response for quickly setting up an inspection date, promptly getting a proposal, having the work scheduled shortly after being awarded and arriving on the date and time agreed. I had asked for some liability insurance documentation and received that quickly as well. As a footnote, the ice dam problem seems to be resolved. I'll need a few thaw/freeze/thaw cycles to be sure. Although 31 years in this house, I was astonished at the perceptible warmth and lack of chill zones I had come to expect after 30 years in this house. I have been waiting since work was completed in October for some terrible weather to really assess Rick's work, and I have to say he did an amazing job for a very fair price. Really pleased with the work that Rick did. We have an odd shaped attic with a raised ceiling, leading to a lot of gaps in insulation on the other side. We were already short of about a foot of insulation everywhere else, and that area only had 3 inches!
