I brought in a high end acoustic guitar for a simple pickup installation. I called first and was…read moretold they might be able to get it done the same day or maybe the next. I arrived within an hour of my call and learned that it would be a few days since it was a Friday and they are closed Sunday. (Not bad really but I needed it was told it was probable) I was told I could pay an upcharge for "express service" and agreed. I picked up the guitar the next day. When I got home I discovered the soundhole mounted control panel with Volume and tone controls was mounted so far to the rear that my index finger was wedged between the low E string and the tone knob in order to turn the thumbwheel. I was not told or informed whether there may be an issue with placement due to bracing. I would understand I that's the case but I should have been informed or asked about it. This makes using the tone knob impractical. The express service upcharge was essentially a waste of money because I had to drive back and leave the guitar. This time a couple more days. Chuck said they were short staffed maybe they could get it the next day. It's mounted with Double sided sticky tape and/or velcro. How long could it take? Two days later with no contact I just drove back and picked up the guitar and I'll get it fixed elsewhere. I have gigs I need to play and that's what I got this guitar for. I gig professionally and did 145 shows last year. Again, Chuck said they were short staffed but my experience is delivery time to fix an issue became a moving targett. I understand things happen but this was not a good first experience with the shop. I probably won't go back. Their charges are also higher than what other shops charge in town b based on my 30 years of gigging in Tucson. Overall this is not a huge deal but my first experience with this shop including 'express service' was not good.

I figured I would take it to a local business to have it it re-strung and looked over. I waited all week to go at a time outside of my work hours because their hours are very limited. I walked in holding the guitar and the first thing that was said to me when I walked in was "we're not doing anymore repairs today". The gentleman then asked me what was wrong with it and I explained that I didn't know what and wanted it looked at. He offered to write up a value on it to let me know how much it could be worth, and I explained to him that my intention was to play this guitar and that would really only be helpful to know to compare to the cost of repair. He did show me a few guitars they had in house at what seemed like a decent price. But instructed me to come back when the repairman was in, which could be anytime because even though he had hours, he is a gig worker and sometimes has to leave. It largely felt like he was more interested in selling me something versus addressing the concerns I currently had. Can't blame him in this economy, I suppose. He was kind and it is a cool shop, just didn't seem like it was what I needed based on my situation. This place has a very small town, small store feel - if you're looking for a wide variety of instruments and/or consistent hours, this might not be the right choice for you either.

Arriving home, I found the slide to be WORSE than when it had been left there. It also seems that none or very little of the promised work was completed. After hiring a specialized brass craftsperson to do the job, the trombone looks and feels incredible. I emailed IMC on May 21 after having it inspected by the new repair person and learning how badly the store had performed. Nearly every item requested at check-in was not done, including replacement of the old, deteriorated cork barrel slide damper.

Unfortunately, purchasing a refurbished lab top from them was a different experience. After taking my previous laptop in for service and learning it was fried, I decided to purchase a refurbished laptop from them. I figured it was safe since my previous service experiences had been positive and I had never felt like I was being ripped off. After a sleazy sales pitch, I purchased a refurbished Dell laptop for around $600. I have had refurbished computers in the past and have never had an issue with them. This Dell, however, is the worst machine I have ever had. It is, by far, the slowest computer I have ever used and it does not maintain a charge. I have to have it plugged in at all times while I am using it. Might as well be a desktop from the mid 90s. It is an extremely frustrating machine to use. Soon after losing $600 on this pile of junk, I notified Ready Set Repair of its issues via their online portal. I never received a response. I will not be going back to Ready Set Repair for services, sales, or anything else. I do not recommend them and advise anyone seeking their products or services to be wary of untrustworthy sleazy schmoozers. Gross.

After two other music stores couldn't fix my Mic stand (though one did recommend the Chicago Music Store) I found help at that very awesome old, old old place. I bought things there way back in the 50s. You could always find what you needed at that store. Later I shopped at other stores nearer to my home. But when nobody could fix my droopy mic stand I was told to try Mike at the Chicago Store downtown. It was thrilling to see it still there, just like all those years ago, with every instrument you could want, and parts besides. Mike handled my mic stand almost with reverence, telling me what a fine stand Atlas made as he took it all apart and cleaned it, repairing whatever made it droopy, and assuring me it will last a lifetime. (Another store has told me it couldn't be fixed and wanted me to have a cheap plastic stand, suggesting I throw this old one in the trash.) I am so happy to find this venerable, historical place all organized and busy selling and repairing instruments. Now I appreciate the mic stand I have and will once again shop there for whatever I need. It was good to see a Levkowitz at the helm, because I'd bought lots of things from his father years ago. I have been renting a trombone for my son from this location for 2 years. There has never been a single complication. I brought the trombone in once as it got damaged. Chicago music store fixed the instrument very quickly, at no charge. My son said it played even better after getting it back. This weekend, we went into the store to find a very particular music book my son was looking for. The book was not available at the location We went to. I did not have the ability to drive to the other store that day, nor did I have the ability to come back the following Monday. Instead of the normal service I have come to expect from places these days, the owner of the store, Mark, completely understood my situation and offered to bring the book to my place of work first thing Monday morning. Monday morning, right on time, Mark came to my work and brought me the book so I could take it home to my son. This place has been in Tucson so long, they know all the different schools, music teachers at those schools, as well as the music programs happening around town. They are very much a part of the fabric of Tucson and I will always support this local business. Thank you Chicago Music Store!! read more

Wow, read some of the reviews below and wondered if they were in the same store with the same staff. I have always been treated in a friendly manner and greeted every time I walk in the store. I rented my first clarinet then a flute there 30 years ago. Rented a flute for my daughter a few years ago. Everything was up front and clear both times about the price, the condition, and the terms. I have bought music and accessories there as well. You can almost always work with the managers to get a deal or terms you can afford. What I really love about the store staff is that they do care about you getting what you want or need and helping encourage all musical talent. Yes, it has been dusty and disorganized. There is a lot of inventory and if you talk to someone, they will help you find it. Harry Potter fans, it is like a visit to Olivanders Wand shop. It is magical. Reminds of the way local businesses used to be and is always worth a visit when I am downtown. read more

I have been a customer at the downtown Chicago Store for many years and was really excited when the east side opened because it was closer. My experience has always been positive at both locations. Sales people were available to answer questions and make helpful suggestions. Once we had a "musical emergency" before a performance. I called and the store owner answered on his cell phone, met me at the downtown store, took care of the problem and didn't charge me anything! I take lessons from Damon, the store manager at the east side location and he has been great. I really like that they don't push me to buy something more expensive than I am comfortable with. I always check prices before I buy and I have found their prices to be comparable to those at the big box stores and on the internet. One of the best things about this music store is that they are locally owned and I believe in supporting local business whenever I can. read more

I've been a customer of the Chicago Music Store for years and years. I have received outstanding treatment. When I was teaching music in the schools and was promoting recorders, Phil and Joe let me take a bunch of them to sell to the kids and had me pay them after the kids bought them. When I was buying a Moeck recorder for my wife, Phil ordered it for me at a HUGE discount. Another time they helped me out was when my french horn needed its valve bearings swaged and Steve Powell, the brass repairman at the time did the job perfectly. They also sent off my horn to the manufacturer to have the rotors plated and clearances restored; the valves got perfect compression back. So my experience with the Chicago Store has been excellent, and I'm confident that, even though Phil and Joe are deceased, Mark will make sure it stays that way. read more

Living in MS, away from our grandkids, we often "jump thru hoops" to get things done for them. We had spoke to the oldest two weeks ago and found out that he would be learning the sax at school. He was thrilled. When we talked to him on Labor Day, we found out that it would not happen due to costs. That just would not be suitable for us, so I got online, found the store's number and called. Holiday conversation, personal service, and, long story short, got a call this evening that the sax was hand delivered to school, and the "thank you, thank you, thank you" was wonderful. Dropped off my Strat to have a repair and was greeted by very friendly staff. The volume pot needed replacement and new strings. The tech called later and we chatted about the scope of work and he told me I could pick it up that afternoon. Wow ! Very fast service ! I told him that since I live in Green Valley that I would just pick it up the next morning. Went to pick it up and the same, very friendly staff, greeted me. I have always had good experiences at Chicago Store, and I've worked for a variety of theater companies in Arizona from the old Wilde Playhouse which was just across the street from Chicago Store to Phoenix Theater. It's a great place to find old music, fakebooks, showtune selections and tons of fun surprises. The staff as always been super nice, and growing up in NYC I was definitely a fan of the building and even the clutter. I am in Omaha, NE right now but moving back to Tucson next month and looking forward to revisiting Chicago Store. Jesus what the hell happened? I recently dropped in to take a look around Chicago and didn't recognize the place. As someone without the time to dig through mountains of crap to find a pack of guitar strings, I was pleased to see someone finally got the floor (or, at least the 1st one) cleaned up. I have 2 sons, 7 and 5, who recently started lessons....guitar, sax and drums! All 3 teachers have been absolutely great with my boys and they love coming. The manager, Damon, has been patient with us since we are new to the world of music we have needed a little extra guidance. The owner, Mark, has also been very helpful. I had heard a lot of good things about this store and was floored when I walked in. The place is huge with a great selection of instruments. I wanted to buy a uke for my dad as a birthday present and the salesman was very helpful, knowledgeable, and patient and I found the prices competitive with my research on the internet. I've shopped at many music stores before but I've never seen such a large collection of older and unique instruments as this place. Recently it's been remodeled and the store looks great! I believe the repair department has some of the best technicians in southern Arizona. The owner/operator, "Rick," seemed very knowledgeable so I asked him to do a set-up on my Anderson "Crowdster II." Sweet! So then I shuffled off my 20-year-old ES-335 to him that needed the action adjusted and pickups balanced. Sounds sweet and balanced now and plays like a dream. Finally, I had a slight intonation problem on my Martin 000-28 so I asked Rick if JFL would fix that which he did with a little bridge work and a neck adjustment. The intonation is near perfect now and the action plays great. As far as I could tell, I don't think JFL has the capabilities to do things like a neck reset but if you need a quick turnaround on a set-up, a fret job, etc, and don't want to mess it up, give JFL a call!! Rick's work is meticulous, he's very knowledgeable and careful, and a super-friendly person. I usually have Rainbow work on acoustics, but I've now found a new service to keep them in top notch condition. Highly recommended!
