    Impromptu bluegrass jam circle

What a true jem of a shop. I didn't know what to expect. I walked in and this shop isn't like your everyday music store. There is a whole room dedicated to just banjos. Another room for ukuleles and even a little uke alter. Guitars everywhere and mandolins like crazy. You won't see that at guitar center. I play the uke. I was greeted by Milo and he asked how I heard about the place and I said I heard about it from the Tucson Folk Festival. He said he helped run and organize that for 17 years. Folks this is a community store not a chain store. Please support it. It was the last hour of the day that I visited and I looked at the ukes and they are not your standard Kala types but rather more upscale brands including a custom made $935 8 string with electronics that was a beaut. Milo said I was just in time for their bluegrass jam circle so I grabbed the top end uke (btw, there was even a Ubass in there) and joined them. I'm not to their level but they let me play along and I started to get the hang of it. What a way to gain a customer and let them really try out an instrument. I'll never forget it. Thanks, Milo and friends!

For fans of all stringed instruments, The Folk Shop is a must stop. And if you love antique instruments, you're really in for a treat. It's rare to see a shop with lots of banjos but there they were hanging on the wall in their very own room. Being an erstwhile banjo player myself, this was a sweet sight to see. Vintage guitars, mandolins, accordians and button boxes, fiddles, ethnic instruments (lots of drums), and wooden pipes to blow....they're all here. They buy, sell, trade, and consign making it an overall delightful place to shop for all things musical.

I took two acoustic guitars in to have new strings put on and also see what is new in the store…read more Mike stated new strings had come out from a particular popular brand name that contained a coating of some kind that not only limited your fingertips from being cut, but it also extends the life of the strings. I couldnt wait to try it out. When i got home, i played for about and hour and the difference with the new type of strings was incredible. Mike was extremely helpful and put the new strings on within an hour. I have always had great service from Chicago Music Store and will continue to go there for all my music needs. Thank you !!!

I find myself in possession of a BEAUTIFUL mandolin. Yes, I know, but there you have it. I wanted…read moreit to be with someone who would love it and make beautiful music for their muse. So I went to the Chicago Music Store, Tucson's go to for all things music. It is a BEAUTIFUL PLACE that caters to all things music, instruments, tools amps, just a breath taking array of musical instruments to create magic. Almost inspired me to hang on to aforementioned mandolin. But I sold it to them so that it would end up in the proper set of hands. While there I chatted with the owner and his assistants who were friendly, extremely knowledgeable and clearly in tune with musicians. They will find it a good home. I browsed, and was amazed at their inventory! If you are looking for ANYTHING in the music oeuvre this should be your first stop. Smack downtown on 6th Ave. Hurry in and feed your soul.

I brought in a high end acoustic guitar for a simple pickup installation. I called first and was…read moretold they might be able to get it done the same day or maybe the next. I arrived within an hour of my call and learned that it would be a few days since it was a Friday and they are closed Sunday. (Not bad really but I needed it was told it was probable) I was told I could pay an upcharge for "express service" and agreed. I picked up the guitar the next day. When I got home I discovered the soundhole mounted control panel with Volume and tone controls was mounted so far to the rear that my index finger was wedged between the low E string and the tone knob in order to turn the thumbwheel. I was not told or informed whether there may be an issue with placement due to bracing. I would understand I that's the case but I should have been informed or asked about it. This makes using the tone knob impractical. The express service upcharge was essentially a waste of money because I had to drive back and leave the guitar. This time a couple more days. Chuck said they were short staffed maybe they could get it the next day. It's mounted with Double sided sticky tape and/or velcro. How long could it take? Two days later with no contact I just drove back and picked up the guitar and I'll get it fixed elsewhere. I have gigs I need to play and that's what I got this guitar for. I gig professionally and did 145 shows last year. Again, Chuck said they were short staffed but my experience is delivery time to fix an issue became a moving targett. I understand things happen but this was not a good first experience with the shop. I probably won't go back. Their charges are also higher than what other shops charge in town b based on my 30 years of gigging in Tucson. Overall this is not a huge deal but my first experience with this shop including 'express service' was not good.
