We had a significant amount of work done with CRDG during the summer of 2021, including the addition of a garage roof deck and the renovation of a another roof deck space in our home. In total, the work was north of $100K. Overall, I would rate the work quality as fair and the service experience as very bad. We've had multiple issues along the way working with CRDG including gaps in the estimation process where specifications were missed multiple times, a surprise change order where new issues/costs were raised that should have been part of the initial estimate and poor communication overall during the build process. Roughly 18 months after the project was completed, I reached out because several aluminum panels CRDG installed are fading. Without even coming out to evaluate the situation, I was told via email that the issue was out of warranty and that I would need to pay to have the panels removed/repainted. Beyond being a terrible policy (these are outdoor products that shouldn't be fading this fast), the customer service is total crap. There are many places that do this work in Chicago. I would suggest avoiding CRDG at all cost. read more

I highly recommend Chicago Roof Deck and Garden. Let me tell you why: I recently bought a new condo, in a 30 + unit building in downtown Chicago. Our unit has a terrace, and we wanted to "deck" it to level out the space, build out a privacy fence, and add lighting. I had looked at Chicago Roof Deck and Garden, and while their work looked great, I thought my project was likely way too small. This led me to reach out to another well regarded roof decking contractor, who has some of the best reviews in the city. They came out to visit the site, took measurements, told me about how they have done this a million times and that my job was no problem. My building approved the plans and materials pending permits and I thought we were all set. I wanted a second opinion so I decided to give Chicago Roof Deck and Garden a call. Jake from Chicago Roof Deck and Garden reached out to me and asked me a bit about my project. I told him what I wanted to do, gave him the measurements so that he could provide me with a estimate and told him about the types of materials currently spec'd for the project and that I had already received HOA approval. The email I got back from Jake was astonishing, I have never received such a detailed email on a first reply from any builder/contractor/designer. The level of detail in this email confirmed that he understood the project, the budget constraints, and city code. It was this last point that separated Chicago Roof Deck and Garden from the other company I spoke to. In Jake's reply to me, he pointed out that the materials that the other contractor was planning to use were not up to city code. In my building all the materials need to be Class A Fire Rated, and what my current contractor was planning to use was not. Jake also pointed out that the privacy fence that I wanted to build would require a permit, another thing that my existing contractor told me I did not need. So I followed up again with my existing contractor. After some digging the contractor emailed me and confirmed everything Chicago Roof Deck and Garden told me in my initial email exchange. I would need a permit for the privacy fence, the materials currently spec'd were not up to code and could not be installed. More importantly he was unable to complete the work because it was too complex. This was a big shift from "we have done this a million times". My building approved the project, which means this deck would have been built, and if anyone had realized it was not up to code, it would have had to be torn down and I would have been left without a deck and been out 10s of 1000s of dollars or worse if the deck ever caught fire. THANK YOU JAKE, AND THE CHICAGO ROOF DECK AND GARDEN TEAM FOR SAVING ME FROM THIS NIGHTMARE. When I spoke with Jake from Chicago Roof Deck and Garden, I told him this story and he told me that unfortunately this is common. We then focused on my project. Jake was very quick to acknowledge that this job is on the smaller end for the work they do but they could make this project work. He pointed out that my vision for the space was already very solidified which would allow me to save on design costs. He brought up the privacy fence and asked me several questions about why I was putting it in. After listening, he suggested artificial hedges, he suggested this for two reasons. First planter boxes and hedges do not require a permit, where a privacy fence does. Second, the privacy fence was going to require a re-enforced sub-structure to the decking frame to be up to code. This was expensive but would not be required with planters, saving me a ton of money. All of these things helped get the project to fit more comfortably within my budget and led to an overall better design. Jake and I spoke about the other details of this project for about an hour, he answered every question I had, talked through various design considerations with me, and was clearly focused on maximizing my dollar. I have spoken to a lot of contractors and I have never had a conversation that left me feeling as confident and comfortable as my conversation with Jake. Next week I will begin the schematic work with Jake and his team, so that I can submit a new set of plans to my building for approval. If my experience throughout the execution of this project is even half as good as these initial interactions, this will be the best construction experience I have ever had, and will be worth every penny. If you live in a larger building in the city and want a roof deck, even if you believe your project is simple it is worth reaching out to Chicago Roof Deck and Garden. They may surprise you, and I guarantee you will learn something in the process. If I had not, I would have had a nightmare on my hands. Now I can't wait to get to work on this project. read more

Sure, we had plenty of delays on materials and it was frustrating at moments but the delays were supply chain so CRD was doing the best with an uncontrollable situation. I bought a condo in December 2021 that Chicago Roof Deck and Garden had done work on several years ago. The fire pit was broken and part of the agreement between the seller and myself was that the firepit would be fixed. Kearra and Jake at CRDG were made aware of the situation and confirmed the parts needed to fix the fire pit had been ordered and paid for. They were unable to fix it before my closing due to the warehouse being on backorder, according to Kearra. After months of the seller talking with them and over two months of my emails back and forth with the Kearra and Jake, I was informed that "Kearra had crossed her wires" and they would not be fixing the fire pit. Darren called me, making excuses, telling me the part was discontinued, blaming Kearra, and denied most of the facts until I read all the emails to him from the seller. He thanked me for the "insight" and asked for a day to look into the issue further. When we spoke again, he said he wanted to make it right and "heard the plight in my voice." After sending out a technician to look at it, he offered to clean the remote and get new batteries. He also provided pricing for parts and labor to install a new fire pit. It was clear he was not going to own up to his company's mistakes or even his own word. On top of the poor communication and bad business, Darren couldn't get the issue straight. He continued to switch between burner, ignitor, batteries, and the entire fire pit. I do not think he had any idea what was going on and instead was hoping for a quick "apology" before walking away from the mess. At one point he offered me a phone number for a gas line company in Chicago, but didn't even know if they would be able to help me. He also at one point denied his company having contact with the seller after November 5th when I had emails between them going all the way to December 22. When I did speak with Darren, there were days between him calling me back after I had left messages. It is now the end of April and the issue was initially addressed October of 2021, yet I am no closer to having the issue resolved. The only solution Darren offered me was to clean the remote and put new batteries in it. However, the technician showed me the cartridge holding the batteries is missing a spring, rendering it useless. Anyone would know (especially someone in this industry) that no amount of cleaning or new batteries are going to make up for a missing spring. They did replace the cartridge for the batteries, but this did not fix the problem. After that, Darren quoted me for an entire new system and labor, including installing gas and electric lines, which were already in place. It was clear he had no idea what was going on and was hoping I would simply purchase a new fire pit for $6,500, when he didn't even check into the issues. When I asked him for a name and model of the fire pit, he sent me one with the wrong dimensions. Truly, the most incompetent people I have ever had to deal with. When they make mistakes, they blame other people or deny they knew anything about it. On top of that, I had to follow up with Darren every single time a technician came out to look at the fire pit. Not once did he take initiative to solve the problem or even admit he had anything to do with it. I did try to give him multiple opportunities to correct his company's mistakes and he made it worse. The only funny thing about this is that he thought I would still do business with him after all of this. My response to Darren: 1. I stated in the first sentence of this review that I was not the person who worked with your company initially. 2. The original owner you did work with tried to get this issue resolved. Your comany (Kearra and Jake) confirmed replacement parts were paid for and ordered. There was never a conversation about replacing the fire pit with him. It was months later after the sale that you informed me of your mistakes and refusal to right the situation. 3. The part you did replace, which was not the issue, cost $2 on Amazon. read more

We are planning to build a roof deck and started working with them at the beginning of the summer. They were very pleasant and have a nice showroom in Lakeview/LP. After paying a $600 deposit for design work (maybe a little steep given the amount of "work" that likely went into the process but understandable), things got busy and we haven't gone back in since our initial review. However, our credit card was charged again one month later for another $600 "fee." This should NEVER have been done - and it is shocking that they would be brazen enough to try and get away with this. It smacks of an unprofessional client service model and shady business practices. It's like they'd put us on a payment plan...wow. We are awaiting resolution if this and have opened disputes with our credit card company and BBB in the interim. We will keep the rest of the yelp community updated and reset our review as such. UPDATE - the owner of the business called and said it was a billing error and has since reversed the charge. We contracted Chicago roof deck after quoting our job with a few different roofing companies. For the people that think the price it high I would disagree, there is always a price for a turn key operation which this is. We enjoyed the design process with Vanessa and the small show/sales room was inviting and had tangible things to look at. The reason I have to give them 4 stars is when we contracted them it was April and they were able to start our job in 3 weeks (much faster than anyone else we priced out) with a completion date of 3-4 weeks after that. Needless to say that was a bit of a pipe dream. The job got going about 2 days late... No big deal. During the job we had multiple times when no one showed up when they were supposed to and the project continued to drag out. Ultimately we finished our job around 8 weeks after it began. Our project manager Bodgen was the saving grace for many of the items we needed completed and was awesome to work with. If I called him he always answered have updates and helped move the project along. The craftsmanship of the deck was very good, irrigation works well and the lighting is fantastic. Overall we use our deck almost every day and night. The fire pit is awesome and we Actually feel it saves us money because we come home to our own roofdeck lounge and bar instead of buying drinks at the bar! Again I really wish I could have put 5 stars down but a realistic time frame for completion needed to be provided. In other words. If they say 3-4 weeks, expect 7-8 weeks. Overall, great job Chicago roof deck, thanks to Vanessa for the designs, being very personable and helpful and special thanks to Bodgen for being an excellent communicator and getting it done! read more

I've talked to Chicago Roof Deck and Garden regarding a rooftop project for my condo. I told them that my budget is approx. $50k with some flexibility ( not a ton but some). They did an initial budget with a very wide range with an upper end of the range exceeding $100k. Obviously I'm not looking to spend that much. So I set up a call with their design director Vanessa trying to understand what we can do with around 50k. Going in I wasn't 100% sure what I was looking for and they gave me many options to choose from. The design process was great and they walked me through the whole process. They coordinated well with the AV guys and whomever else needed to be there. I now have a wonderful deck with TV, fridge, kegerator, grill, etc all wonderfully built in and looking good. To put it simply, if I could do it again I would not use them. Overpriced, poor customer service follow up, and bad design. I dealt with a canopy issue for over a year that was never resolved - now I'm forced to just scrap the thing. After installation, the canopy ripped in half within 2 weeks (not even bad storms). As it took 3 months to deliver it in the first place, it was decided it was best to wait until the following spring to fix it. Once all the scheduling problems of pickup and re-installation were overcome, the canopy was replaced. This time it lasted less than 24 hours. So they decided more beams were necessary. Once the beams were installed and the canopy replaced the canopy lasted a whopping 48 hours. So the solution? I was told I should choose a more rigid material to the tune of about 10K more. Seems to me a roofdeck company who specializes in roofdecks in Chicago should be pretty familiar with the durability of the materials they choose. (keep in mind this is a 3rd story roof 2 miles from the lake, nothing that crazy). So there's a couple grand I should have just burned. Speaking of burned... The next issue came to light when I needed some A/C repair done. CRD&G had built a railing around the unit to help hide it. The A/C repair guy showed me where the fence had been charred to black because they built part of the fence directly in front of the heat exhaust. Luckily the problem was caught otherwise the repair guy told me it most assuredly would have caused a fire. read more

We had two meetings with the salesperson who left out key items for our roof deck and then included planters for $3,000 which wasn't even on our "want list". They then told us we couldn't afford lounge chairs. The salesperson missed about 5 other things from our initial meeting and was vague about all of the prices. Do not trust them.
