Long story short: I developed serious hives all over my body after eating the tuna here (I'm not allergic either, I love sushi and eat it whenever I can). The deets: I came here with my wife and daughter on Saturday at ~5pm. We were the only ones in there the whole time with maybe 2-3 customers picking up orders. My wife and I both ordered an Ume Jewelry Box consisting of salmon, tuna, eel, cucumber, salmon roe, imitation crab meat, and egg on top of rice. We also ordered the chicken karaage appetizer and a Beef Box from the kid's menu. The food came out and already did not look appealing: the fish in our jewelry boxes looked poorly cut with the tuna cut into tiny cubes and the salmon looking almost shredded. The karaage was also disappointing because it was very dry (my wife believes they used chicken breast), had hardly any breading, and was barely fried at all. Lastly, our daughter's Beef Box was supposed to include gyoza, but they just threw in more dry karaage for whatever reason. My wife only ate some of the salmon and rice before deciding that she didn't like it, so I finished her dish along with mine. There was already a decent amount of soy sauce in the dish but I also added some wasabi sauce so I didn't really notice any abnormal flavor. I was also pretty hungry so I scarfed them both down. Fast forward 4-5 hours later and I start to feel some itchiness all over my body with some red welts starting to develop. I took an Allegra to address the itching and went to bed. The next morning the red welts start to spread, and by the end of the day they developed into full-blown hives all over my arms, legs, chest, back, neck, face, and scalp (I included a couple pictures of the hives when they started, but you'll have to trust me when I say that it got *much much* worse later on since I don't want to gross anyone out with those pictures). After searching on Google for possible causes, we determined the cause to be histamine fish poisoning/scombroid fish poisoning which occurs after eating fish that has not been properly handled and stored, causing histamine levels to increase. This mostly occurs in tuna, which would explain why my wife didn't develop a reaction while I developed a severe one. I'm not sure if the current heat wave played a part in the improper storage/handling of the fish; I wouldn't be surprised if it did, however that still wouldn't excuse any poor storage methods. I also read some other recent reviews of their sushi rolls being warm when they were served. I sincerely hope no one else has gone through the same thing I'm going through now. This was a huge disappointment to say the least since we've been wanting to try it for a while. But I guess we waited too long before it started going downhill. Never coming back here again.

This is my favorite sushi place in Chicago. Went in for lunch with my sister after aggressive shopping experience. From the salad to dessert, everything was delicious. Massive portions, hope they never change. (Because I know a lot of places do this) Authentic flavors, honestly better than sushi from Japan I had past March. Dying to go back, but it's kind of far away from my house. Hope they stay open as long as I can visit. But yes. This place is my favorite place to get sushi.

I try to avoid giving bad reviews these days, but Chicago Sushi was just plain bad. The Shrimp Curry was ok. Reminded me of instant curry (which I eat at home regularly), and the shrimp was pretty decent. However, as a sushi place the only thing they need to get right is fresh fish. The Chirashi's fish was mushy and fishy smelling. Texture had no bounce, and it was just limp and way too soft. You could just pull it apart. It was definitely past when they should have been selling it. Such a shame, as the reviews are not generally bad for this spot. However, selling old fish is unforgivable at a sushi restaurant. Think about this next time you get one of those fancy rolls that have sauces and toppings which hide the smell and texture of the fish. Absolute miss.

Great food! Super fresh sushi and delicious. Kids meal has the best value. Service was nice too and you can order ramen from next door. The place is a bit small with a casual vibe. Will be back!

One of the best sashimi chirashi I ever had, which comes in a jewel box filled with eel, salmon, tuna, ikura. I ordered the "Take" which is $15 and is enough food for 1 person. You do get a nice hot bowl of miso which is very refreshing. I do recommend the variety of hand rolls which comes to you personally from chef. We ordered a few salmon and tuna rolls. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a treat and enjoy very fresh seafood. Parking is limited as it is shared lot.

First time I was here was six months ago, and I have returned on a random Saturday for a late lunch time. Luckily, there was no line. We were seated immediately and got to order and food comes out very quickly super fresh and super hot. I will say since the last visit the menu has definitely grown, which is incredible to see with a lot more choices. They have definitely stepped it up from the sushi, the bowls, and the Ramen, and noodle soups overall. Service is still super friendly and not rushing considering that they weren't busy and this is definitely the unpretentious spot for good comfort food at a fair price.

Honestly, one of my favorite/best chirashi meals I've ever ever had. I had Chirashi Jewelry Box - it was beautiful and tasty; what sold me was the generous servings of uni (sea urchin). My dining friend and I finished off our meal with mochi ice cream black sesame. If you've never had black sesame, it tastes like an earthy peanut butter. If I ever see black sesame on the menu, I am down for it!

Excited to try Chicago Sushi as it's same owners of Chicago Ramen. I love Chicago Ramen so I had high expectations but to be honest, it was ok. Having opened in 2022, but the decor is of 1990s. Service was excellent. There was nothing special about this place and am not sure if I'd go out of my way to visit. I'd rather go next door for ramen. Here's what we ordered: blue crab & Chicago bowl Matsu chirashi sushi with uni Japanese calamari few handrolls - eat within 3 seconds

I stopped in for a quick lunch on a Monday around 12:15pm for the first time. They were pretty slow during that time so I didn't have to wait. Food came out very quick after ordering. I absolutely loved the crunch on the Japanese calamari as well as the portion of scallop/salmon inside the bowl! Only con was the music choice :-( Have y'all ever watched a scary movie where there's a scene of someone driving down an empty road, in a convertible with their top down; there's old happy country music playing in the background BUT the person is about to get murdered???? That's what their music reminded me of LOL CHEF or Chicago Sushi employees- if you're seeing this, I can send my playlist over

I've been a big fan of Chicago sushi and they opened this place next door. I'm always debating between the two but the last year I've chosen to come here 90% of the time. This is a gem of a sushi place, and let me tell you, it's like no other. The hand rolls are a flavor explosion, and the chirashi jewelry box is a work of art on a plate. But what sets them apart is the freshness of their fish - the uni and scallops are always top-notch. This spot is a hidden treasure for sushi lovers, and each visit feels like a culinary adventure.

Finally made my way to Des Plaines. Really wanted to Chicago Ramen but the weather was way too warm for that so opt in for Chicago Sushi. Honestly didn't even know it was right next to each other. Tucked in a plaza so no need to worry about parking. We came during down time where it was past lunch and too early to call it dinner so it was fairly quiet and empty just how we like it when dining with a baby. They had a booster seat for her to use to plop on the seated bench. Really was craving hand rolls since my visit to Dallas and wasn't looking to break the wallet so really this is the bang for the buck when it comes to price point value. The spicy salmon hand roll was so good we ordered another one. Best consume once it hits the table! Also have been seeing the jewel box so that was a must for me and the scallops were huge! I'd skip the crab meat bowl with scallop, nothing too extraordinary about it. I wish they bought back the hand roll trio in stead of selling them just one by one.

Chicago Sushi is a casual restaurant that serves delicious Japanese cuisine. I discovered this restaurant because it is located next to Chicago Ramen, where I recently ate. I'm also curious if this is a sister company to Chicago Ramen. The setting is quiet possibly because I'm the only person in here other than the sushi chef and the waitress. I'm relieved to be able to eat peacefully after a long day at work. Their menu offers a broad selection of intriguing foods ranging from hand rolls, specialty rolls, rice dishes, and ramen. Unfortunately, my stomach is small, or I would have ordered the entire menu. While I waited for my meal, I seized the opportunity to browse the details of the area. It has many charming Japanese decorations around the interior spaces. I can't help but note that the main feature of the design is natural wood, which gives it an earthy vibe. As an appetizer, I got the fried oysters with drizzling tonkatsu sauce, which has a sweet and acidic aftertaste to balance out the savory of the oyster. It was served with a mildly rich and creamy egg salad on the side. My entree was the pork cutlets curry. The pork is thin and slightly dry. The breading appears to be unevenly coated. To season and color the white rice, dried seaweed was sprinkled on top. The curry gravy was the winner for me; it had a thick texture and an explosive curry taste. To conclude my dinner, I had the mochi ice cream. Originally, I wanted the green tea tiramisu, but they were out. I was disappointed because the mochi ice cream was presented in an ordinary way that I could easily acquire at a regular Asian grocery store. The service was quick. The meals arrived promptly and hot, and the service was decent but not overwhelming, allowing me to appreciate the dish. I'm pleased I stopped by because I would not have had the opportunity to try it otherwise. This will be my new favorite Japanese restaurant in the Des Plaines area.

This is now my updated review as a purposefully came back for a dinner on a Friday night. You should try to make a reservation because on this particular Friday night they actually were full. And you can do it online through their website. The dinner menu is significantly different from the lunch menu. It is much more expensive with a lot more choices, especially as it pertains to the sushi and the cold as well as hot appetizers. You also have the option during dinner to order a sushi tray whether it is a Nigiri sashimi or maki tray. And if you sit there and do the math if you order the trays, they're a lot cheaper, but you have to like what the options are on the tray. You can tell by the pictures we ordered quite a bit of food as usual for dinner. Everything was so super fresh and delicious as usual. Everything came out with really good timing as well. We had a completely different waitress and a team of of servers this evening and all of them were absolutely friendly and helpful and attentive. This is got to be my new go to for authentic Japanese. You can also tell because while we were there the patrons coming in were Japanese in majority. I cannot say enough about this place being amazing with incredible quality fish, and a great menu.

Maybe double check if yakitori is hot before ordering more.

We were seated immediately and a server came right over. Their first question was to ask if we'd been there before. The second question was if we'd had Hot Pot or Korean Barbeque before. Since we were "pros," she let us know to order on the provided iPad. They also have a few steam tables where you can find things to make a dipping sauce, sushi, fresh fruit, some deserts, and other items. With the name "Galaxy," they have an outer space theme with planets and space suits hanging from the ceiling. Lots of neon lights, too. Fun. We started with Hot Pot, then shifted to Korean Barbeque. We had so many different meats and vegetables I won't even try to recount. Apparently, the menu is more extensive, with better cuts of meat, for dinner. I have to tell you that the meats we had were more than adequate. We ate so much, I'm not sure if there were other choices, if we would change anything. Our server was also great. She was there when we needed her, was very pleasant and helpful and helped make our experience a great one. The food is all included and endless, but you pay extra for drinks. We stopped by for my sisters birthday celebration. The food was good as always but our server was pretty slow and we didn't believe he deserved the pre-determined tip so we asked him to remove it and we could add a more appropriate tip. The server left the table (frustrated sure, although we believed it wasn't what he deserved) he came back and told us the manager didn't allow for the tip to be removed so we asked to speak to her. She came over already annoyed and asked us what happened. She mentioned that the tip was included and rudely told us there was nothing she could do. She proceeded to leave the table saying "I'll give you time to think about it, because I can't do anything". After some thought we decided to just pay the full amount because my sisters birthday was becoming a mess and we didn't want a whole fiasco. So we headed to the front of the store to pay where the manager was on the phone calling 911 because apparently we "wanted to leave without paying the bill" so we waited for the cops, who believed we were leaving without paying our bill since the manager claimed we were walking out on our bill. After the whole thing the manager partially removed the tip. They said that if we come again and this happens once more we would be trespassed (as if we'd want to return after all of this). I'd like to be clear we're not against big party fees. As a Mexican family we love to have big reunions and other restaurants have this policy and we're happy to pay it when our waiter truly deserves it. But not only did we get mediocre service but also treated like criminals on such a special day.

We were not in a hurry and couldn't decide what we wanted so we started with the calamari salad. $29, but it's huge and chock full of those calamari guys. Lettuce is always crisp and has everything I like in it (olives, eggs, carrots, artichoke, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and romaine lettuce). We were almost full just from the salad alone. I ordered a grouper sandwich (not fried), and my lovely wife ordered the Scottish salmon plate, which comes with potatoes and grilled vegetables. My sandwich came with coleslaw and fresh cut fries. They switched to fresh cut since my last visit, and this was an upgrade. My sandwich was great, and huge too. Could not finish it. Wife's meal was a humongous slab of salmon. We made a reservation because I'd heard this place can get pretty busy. Although it didn't seem too crowded when we first arrived on a Saturday, it filled up quickly throughout our meal. I definitely recommend making a reservation, especially if you're planning to come for dinner. As soon as we walked in, I was struck by how beautiful the restaurant is. Since the building was once a church, they preserved the stained-glass windows and cathedral ceilings, which give the space so much character. We ended up sitting on the patio because it was a gorgeous day, but I definitely want to come back and dine inside so I can fully appreciate the interior. The patio was modern, spacious, and completely shaded, making it very comfortable. Since it's located right next to the little lake, we also enjoyed a nice breeze throughout our meal. Our waitress was friendly and attentive overall, but there was one moment that stood out. My friend's baby accidentally knocked over a full glass of iced coffee, spilling it all over my friend's lap and onto the floor. The waitress watched as my friend cleaned up the mess herself but didn't offer to help or replace the spilled drink. Aside from that, the service was good. My friends and I all ordered something different, and everyone enjoyed their meals. I had the salmon poke bowl ($19), which was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly refreshing. The ingredients tasted high quality, and all the flavors worked really well together. It was more filling than I was expecting! Price-wise, I expected the menu to be more expensive than it actually was. I'm sure dinner prices are higher, especially for steak and seafood, but the brunch menu was quite reasonable. Most breakfast and brunch dishes range from $12-$20, making it a great value for both the quality of the food and the beautiful atmosphere. Overall, we all enjoyed our experience and I'll for sure be back! I'd love to try other menu items and come for dinner, too!

We also ordered a Yook Ke Jang, which was a spicy seasoned soup with shredded beef. It was not too salty or anything. It was just right! Lastly we ordered a marinated pork (forgot the name of it) and it was good, but I think we all preferred the non marinated meat better. Not sure if it's because we were already getting full at that time. Definitely recommend coming to this place. Charcoal bbq tastes so much better, although it can be a little harder to cook imo. ALL the small dishes were amazing...there isn't a small dish I didn't like. This is my new favorite kbbq spot!! This place is also super clean. The women's restroom was clean when I went as well and had everything you need...including spray for your clothes after bbq is done, which is a plus!

They don't make'em like this much more. With charcoals, I mean…read more There's got to be extra steps to get permission for indoor charcoal cooking, so I get it. But meat just tastes better bbq'd on charcoal, y'na mean? It honestly had been a decade and a half since I went to a proper charcoal KBBQ, so this was super exciting for me. The place had an old facade that was reminiscent of the "old days" for me. Not to say it was run down or anything, but everything from the floorplan to the old tables with charcoal pit installed tables reminded me of the KBBQ era of the 90's and beyond. Loved it! My family went inside way past lunch hour, so the place had cleared out and owners seemed to have been having lunch. The two gentlemen eho greeted us gave out father and son energy, but I couldn't be sure. There was a life sized photo of the oldtimer in a marathon getup hanging on one side of the shop entrance, which he explained was taken a decade ago. I could tell he would have been around my father's age, but seemed super healthy. A pleasant man for sure! It may not necesaarily be a good thing for owners, but I love it when there aren't too many patrons around, because it means that I'll get all the attention I need from them, when I need. It was certainly the case here. They were super attentive when we needed something. To be fair, we knew exactly what we wanted, so it wasn't like we needed to call them every 5 minutes, but it certainly was easy to get their attention when I needed another bottle of beer. :-D My family of three order two servings of marinated galbi, contemplating on whether or not to order my wife's favorite pork belly. In the end, we were too full and were glad we stopped with only two servings. We'll just have to come back to try other meat later. This is ALWAYS a dilemma for my family. All three of us each have our favorites, but none of us can eat a whole serving. We usually end up going with my daughter's favorite every time, unless my wife and I are out by ourselves, which these days is not as often as I'd like. We'll just have to wait a couple more years for her to graduate.. Galbi (short ribs) was GREAT! Not much else to say about it, other than the fact that any meat will taste better when grilled on charcoal. With so many other KBBQs around town with more "hip" and "modern" atmosphere, I don't know how well New Seoul is doing these days, but I certainly hope they do enough business to continue to be around. More and more Korean restaurants are moving away from their traditional way of doing things in order to cater to American audiences. They may not be huge changes, but these subtle changes make people like me and my wife a bit sad because it eats away a little bit of our nostalgia each time we experience some. I hate to sound like an old man about it, but I guess it falls to people like myself to continue to support more of the traditional places like these over the young ones. Anyway, based on just the marinated galbi my family had, I must give them 5 stars!
