I know this will spark debate, but I wanted to try pineapple with my fried rice, so that's what I did. The flavor of the dish is spot on; it has savory notes from the curry powder, sweetness from the pineapple, and nice, but there is a few aspect of it that I don't enjoy. The pork and chicken were dry and difficult to eat. I just hope I don't get sick because of the one piece of pork that had a sour aftertaste. The pineapple was undoubtedly canned because some of the slices had a strange flavor and some were sweet. Their dessert, which came in two portions of banana sticky rice, is the one thing I enjoy eating. It's a simple but tasty dish made of sticky rice with a fresh banana filling and wrapped in a banana leaves. The sticky rice was fragile and gooey at the same time. Absolutely terrible experience. Little mom and pop place which never bothers me. Bad food does. This was bad. Shrimp shumai were fishy with what looked like canned titi shrimp. The red curry was barely different from the tom kha soup. My kee mao was ok seasoned, but the noodles were way overcooked and the chicken was dry in the outside. We should have run when the loudest sound coming from the very visible kitchen was the beep beep beep of the microwave. Obviously only 2 people working, but it does not excuse these lazy shortcuts. Can I give this place 10 stars? My flight cancelled so I had to spend the night in Chicago. I was craving Tom Yum Soup and my go to app brought up Bangkok Belly. The soup was spiced just right. There were about 10 huge shrimp in it. The chive pancakes were wrapped in foil so they arrived supper crisp. Again, something totally yummy. The heat level works with the sour to create an unforgettable taste. Next I had Nam Sod Salad, an upscale version of Larb. It could have been a little hotter, but it so worked. Came on a Wednesday night. We were the only table the entire time we were there. Ordered a beef lad nar and a green curry chicken. The portions here are super small. Like the lad nar was maybe half of what I'm expecting. Maybe a third. It was really small . It was also too salty and too sweet. The broccoli had a funny taste to it... like it absorbed the odor of a smelly old fridge. The green curry lacked any real curry taste or depth. It was $25 for just these two dishes before tip. I purchased a GroupOn and went there on a weeknight. Between two people we ordered 4 rolls, a Sweet Potato, Crunchy, San Fran, and Mexican Maki. I am reviewing based on the two rolls I ate and ordered (Sweet Potato and Crunchy). I will say the sweet potato roll is delicious! It's a warm roll on the sweeter side. The Crunchy, I could have down without. It was pretty boring but the spicy mayo gave it a kick. My husband ordered the other rolls and he said they were good. Overall, the place is clean and the service is good. It's not the best sushi and Thai place in Des Plaines, but it's decently priced. read more

Small family owned business, they treated me as if they didn't want me there when i first came and had a "just leave" attitude after ordering. As i became a regular they became the coolest and nicest people, the vibe here is very quiet and family oriented. Shrimp pad se ew here is unbeatable, although they can be skimpy on the amounts of shrimp I haven't tried any of the other selections off the menu but this review is solely towards shrimp pad se ew. As you drive East down Algonquin Road, you'll pass by a little run down strip mall with a sushi joint by the name of Bangkok Belly. You may then think to yourself or turn to your driving partner and say "Who would eat there?" Well, I'll tell you who would eat there...ME!!! And you should, too! This small BYOB sushi joint is open 7 days a week and good bang for your buck! All of the Thai entrees are under $9. They even offer happy hour deals. Because of the small size, I believe there is only one server (at least the times we have been there), so when you are only one of two tables it's no big deal, but if the place is filled you may need to be patient. They also have a delivery service with a $10 minimum to your order. We've had a handful of their appetizers, soups, and salads. *If a restaurant has Vietnamese Spring Rolls (A11) on their menu, I will almost always order them. The more crunchy fresh vegetables the better, and Bangkok Belly has just that. *I don't regularly order tempura's, but the Veggie Tempura (A8) had a light enough breading for me to enjoy. *I LOVE the Avocado Salad (S3). What seems to be an entire avocado lies atop lettuce. It's topped with julienned carrots and a light refreshing dressing. Get it. *I enjoyed the Shrimp Shumai (A5), but you must like garlic to enjoy! The Shumai are steamed, I believe, and then topped off with crispy chopped garlic bits. *I'm a big fan of Tom Yum (P2) soup, but I would pass on theirs. Personal opinion, but for me the broth was bland, the tofu a bit too tough, and I didn't enjoy the addition of tomatoes. I'll have to try the Tom Kha next time. We've only had a few of the entrees. *The Pad Thai (T1) we tried was more sweet, with less of the peanut taste we are use to. They do not skimp on shrimp though, having a nice size and quantity. They were slightly pan fried I believe, which were good, but I would of preferred grilled or sautéed next time. In the corner of the Pad Thai plate, they serve a thumbnail size side of sugar, pepper flakes, & peanuts for you to add at your discretion. *I thought the Drunken Noodle (T3) entree was delicious and would order it again. It was served with yummy wide fat buttery noodles. And now for the main event...Sushi! Honestly, all of the sushi rolls we have ordered here we have liked. *The Mexican Maki (J13) is filled with yellowtail, avocado, cilantro, and jalapeno. Spicy mayo is drizzled over the top...how can you go wrong? *The Spicy Scallop Roll (F9) had fat pieces of fresh scallop with cucumber and avocado. The Spicy Scallop Roll is also drizzled with spicy mayo. *The Negi Hamachi Maki (J9) had nice sized cuts of yellowtail with a little bit of scallion. *The Spicy Trio Roll (F22) has been one of our favorites so far. Aside for being pleasing to the eye, it is a spicy salmon with tempura crunch roll. The roll is topped off with tuna and white tuna, then drizzled with unagi sauce, spicy mayo, and red tobiko. *I didn't think I'd like the Tuk Tuk Roll (F24) because of the fried onions listed in the description, but they were almost like little cornflaked onions on top, rather than the shoestring onions I pictured in my head. The roll itself is white tuna, asparagus, avocado, and a wasabi mayo. It is then topped off with white tuna and the fried onions. There are plenty of more delicious options to try at Bangkok, but I think I've bored you enough. Don't let the location or negative reviews steer you away. Give Bangkok Belly a chance to fill YOUR belly. read more

Jury is kind of out on this place for me. Had a Groupon for $25 and for one person at a place like this, that's a LOT of food. But I hadn't eaten all day, so no issues with that! Decided to order two rolls and gyozas as appetizers, then an entree. The rolls were the "roundest" rolls I have ever seen in a sushi place - I got a futomaki and a tekka maki. Very little rice and a LOT of "core ingredients" - I loved that. What concerned me though was the off color of the tekka maki - usually a bright reddish or pink color, this had a grayish tone that nearly caused me to not accept it. We'll see how I hold up tonight! Didn't detect any odor, so I "rolled" with it (pun intended)! The gyozas were OK - kind of non-descript. I ordered the chicken pad thai for my entree. I agree with Linda as to the color - it was a bright orange - I've only seen pad thai that color once before. Taste-wise, it was OK though, I've had better and worse. They brought it out on a plate and next to it were 3 items - one was clearly some dried hot pepper, another looked like very finely ground peanuts (couldn't taste much of it to speak of) and a third mini-pile of a white salt like looking substance that I never asked about and the server never described. I asked for a to-go menu or business card and they had neither. This is a small place with maybe 8 tables - more to-go than sit down; all the tables were 2 or 4 tops. I tried this place for the first time after driving by it for the last 5 years and my what a surprise! Wish I would have tried sooner! I ordered tofu pad thai, appetizer platter, and cucumber salad, I really like the way the dressing was served on the side being it was takeout. How thoughtful and to keep the salad fresh and crunchy. I also was pleased with the portion size and especially the friendly welcoming people who are here that is so reminiscent of people fromThailand. This place recently opened under new management. I have been there a few times since they reopened and have been very impressed. The new owner and employees take time to come out and check to make sure your meal is satisfactory. They make their meals with as much or little heat as you like. It's a very clean place with about seating for 25. They have a nice menu with lunch specials that come with soup and spring rolls. The price is less than $8. read more

If you're looking for authentic Thai food without going to the city, this is the spot. The location is under new management, the sweetest husband and wife team you could meet and their food is comparable to highly-rated restaurants I visited while in Thailand. I moved to the area back in October 2014 and this was the closest Thai place. Against the judgement of Yelp's rating, I decided to order because, while starving, I was craving Thai food. I placed my order and stressed numerous times to make it as spicy as possible, because I'm that addicted to hot food. To my surprise, they delivered on the spice AND the quality/taste surpassed the Yelp reviews, by far. They definitely stack up and since then, I average 2-3 orders/month and I only have to ask once to make it spicy. Tip: If you're a fan of spicy food beyond adding just a touch of chili sauce, be sure to stress over and over and over. I assume because plenty of people say "I can handle spicy food" when they actually can't....and they're erring on the side of caution versus bad reviews for making something too hot. read more

The food was good and the restaurant was a comfortable place to eat. This is a nice mom and pop place with pleasant atmosphere and quality food. Don't eat here if you want to live! I have been in this Resturant twice and have witness the following: Jeff (sushi chef/manager), put on plastic gloves to make sushi, but then with those same gloves on, handled cooked food from the kitchen for both takeout and dine-in. I've seen him go from the making sushi, to answering the phone, to waiting tables, to picking up dirty dishes, then back to making sushi and not once washing or cleaning his hands. He has sneeze into is hand and continued making sushi. The waitress (on Saturdays) has a great butt, you can witness it for yourself because she wheres short shorts and drop her pen a lot. If Des Plaines had a health inspector this Resturant alone would cover the Cities financial deficit. Now for the Food, my first order was Spicy Basil Chicken and my wife ordered Cashew Chicken. My order came out 15 minutes ahead of hers and did not include ground chicken is was just sliced meat. Very little basil and absolutely no spice. When hers finally arrived it looked and tasted the same as mine but with cashews. My second (& last) order was takeout, 1 order chicken Satay and 1 Vietnamese Spring roll. This order took 30 minutes to make. The chicken satay was about the size of a Pringles Potato chip both in size and thickness. There were 5 of these chicken chips laying on lettuce with 8 small pieces of cucumber next to them. The peanut sauce was clearly out of a jar and not made fresh. The Vietnamese spring roll consisted of a 1/2 shrimp (correct) a wad of lettuce (not correct) and a bunch of chopped up bean spouts very loosely rolled up. As soon as I picked it up out fell the chopped sprouts. After the first bit out fell the rest of the spout pieces and I was left with lettuce/shrimp in an oversized flapping wrapper. read more

Very minimal decor inside and very weird that owners (husband and wife owned) young son was set up playing video game on his computer in the dining room. Table, computer chair, full gaming set up...in the dining room. The dining room only had less than 10 tables so small layout. Again, main point is that the food was great!
