The yakitori had issues, most of our skewers tasted reheated or cold, which was then reheated anyways. I think they have staffing issues as well. Ordered a lemon sour and it was flat due to having flat soda water. They kindly replaced it with a slightly less flat soda water. Strong recommendation for the otoro and sashimi cuts. Everything we ordered was delicious, but unfortunately the chicken gizzard skewers were 100% spoiled (they had a wet dog smell to them). After communicating this to staff, they passed it around and confirmed it was indeed spoiled and took it off our bill, which we appreciated. They can get busy and with not too many hands on deck, food and service can come out slowly. It's understandable to a degree, but it does feel like servers rarely come around (through the whole dining experience, our water was never refilled once or even asked to be) and overall service seems subpar at best. I've now been here twice in less than two weeks and the first review was for my first visit for lunch. This is now my updated review as a purposefully came back for a dinner on a Friday night. You should try to make a reservation because on this particular Friday night they actually were full. And you can do it online through their website. The dinner menu is significantly different from the lunch menu. It is much more expensive with a lot more choices, especially as it pertains to the sushi and the cold as well as hot appetizers. You also have the option during dinner to order a sushi tray whether it is a Nigiri sashimi or maki tray. And if you sit there and do the math if you order the trays, they're a lot cheaper, but you have to like what the options are on the tray. You can tell by the pictures we ordered quite a bit of food as usual for dinner. Everything was so super fresh and delicious as usual. Everything came out with really good timing as well. We had a completely different waitress and a team of of servers this evening and all of them were absolutely friendly and helpful and attentive. I recently went to Sankyu and tried a variety of items. It's been a while since I've been there, and it seems like their interior changed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior kind of makes you feel like you're in Japan (although I've never actually been to Japan).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My party ordered a few large Sapporos to start. For food, we got the tonkatsu ramen, one of each skewer (minus the fried tofu since they didn't have it), chicken karaage, mixed tempura, takowasa, and grilled squid. For nigiri, we got yellowtail, bluefin tuna, salmon, sweet shrimp, scallop, surf clam, homemade mackerel, salmon roe, Hokkaido uni, and fatty tuna. For dessert, we had their green tea mochi ice cream since they were out of the regular green tea scoops. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I really love the vibe of the restaurant and I'd definitely go back for the skewers, grilled squid, and takowasa.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The portions were on the smaller side, but everything was simple and tasty. I didn't try the chicken heart, but my bf and friends enjoyed it. Everything else I had was good minus the chicken plum shiso skewer. That flavor was just way too strong for all of us. We ordered the skewers and tonkatsu ramen first, but I'm positive there was a mix-up. Our ramen didn't come out until almost an hour later. We were told a it was coming soon, but it never showed. I'm pretty sure it went to another table, because a guy who sat down after us got his ramen before we did right after we were told it was coming out. One of the server ended up giving us our four pieces of mochi ice cream on the house at the end to make up for the wait. When we finally got the ramen, I was so ready for something warm and brothy because I was so hungover, but it ended up being the saltiest ramen I've ever had. We all took a bite and were so disappointed, especially since it looked so good. The chicken karaage was okay. Some pieces were juicy and tender, but others were over-fried. The mixed tempura was solid. It came with four shrimp tempuras which was kind of amazing. Maybe they gave us extras so everyone could have one? Not sure, but the batter was light and delicious. The nigiri was mostly fresh and good, but the wasabi was super inconsistent. Some pieces had so much wasabi it was hard to even taste the fish, especially the sweet shrimp. My friends saved the uni for their last bite because it looked so promising, but oh man... one friend said it tasted fishy, another smelled it and said it was like the inside of a wet dog's ear. It was really bad. The texture was also really off. I told them to say something to the server, but it was hard to get anyone's attention and we had places to be. The servers were sweet, but overall the service was really slow. Still, I'd go back for some of the apps and skewers. The total came out to $300.14, which we split. It ended up being $180.07 per couple, which felt pretty expensive. We weren't full and ended up eating a little more at home afterward. read more

We sat there for almost 15 minutes without anyone coming to welcome us, give us water or even take our order. We also noticed that there was at least 3 other tables that looked like they were sitting for a while and were looking around I am assuming for a waittress. When we finally got our orders in (some skewers and sushi) what was odd for me was that it was a Saturday at 6 PM and they were already out of like 4 items. Their system was disorderly as at 6 different times, a server would come by with food, go to the wrong table, go back to the food counter and then go to the correct table. We also noticed that a table that came in after us was already getting served food. We also noticed that the 3 servers were slow as the food on the counter was getting crowded, meaning that cooked food was sitting there for x amount of time. Again, we ordered sushi and skewers, but we ended up waiting close to 30 minutes before they brought out our skewers. The weird part of this was that we ordered 8 skewers but they only brought 5 of them so I have no idea where the other 3 went. And guess what, the skewers were cold. So now I am annoyed at how slow they were, and I became hangry that I said screw it, and we walked out. It is very disappointing how a place I loved to go to ruined all the good will I had for them in one night. I have no plans going back. read more

It's Friday, and my firm will nourish us with lunch. We ordered carry out because we were in a hurry. We place our orders over the phone. The food was prepared on time. I had their lunch special katsu curry, which is only available on Fridays. This makes it worthwhile. They meticulously package our meals, and I like that they divided the curry in a separate container to keep the rice and katsu from becoming soggy. The portion of katsu is quite little. The meat is nicely thick. It's lean and not overly fatty, and it's well breaded; nevertheless, the crispness is lost owing to moisture in the container. The curry, on the other hand, was a hit, and I'm glad they gave us a generous portion. The curry gravy is thick and flavorful, with great bits of potatoes, carrots, onions, and some form of pulled meats. The meal is satisfying and perfectly suited to our needs because it is cold outside. There is nothing else I could ask for and I thank you for the food. read more

I came in here for dinner and tried the Spicy Miso Ramen - it's very good not too spicy but it's decently spicy. I also tried the Sukiyaki - my first time trying that, it was good I think it's comparable to Korean Beef Bulgogi but like a soup version of it. The Spicy Tuna sushi roll was excellent as well - the fish is very fresh. The sushi here is fresh, the rolls don't have too much rice, and the overall service was great. We rolled up in here 8 deep and the server was very attentive and helpful. I really like the rainbow roll, as I feel like this is my go to cheat code. It was salmon, tuna, and yellow tail and it gives me a chance to see how fresh the sushi was. It was righteously good. Very wonderful little place out of the way in a strip mall. Make no mistake, This is authentic delicious Japanese food and super helpful service.. Glad we chose to go here for a date night. 01/26/21 - Izakaya Sankyu is a Japanese Restaurant w/a cool Japanese decor. It's a cool little Japanese owned restaurant. I was talking to our server who was born in Hokkaido Japan. This is a furthest island to the north in Japan. The prints on the wall are reminiscent of some of the Japanese prints my mom & dad had in their home. My wife and I went here tonight for my wife's birthday for ramen cause this is what she has been craving. It is her birthday after all. After perusing the menu we saw that they did had quite a large selection of sushi & sushi entrees along w/a nice selection of appetizers. The ramen selection was fairly limited to 4 items on the menu, but this is why we went there for ramen. It was a perfect night to have a hot bowl of ramen as it was cold and snowing. We both ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. The pork bone broth is rich & creamy and was very good. In addition the ramen had ramen noodles a slice of pork belly, 1/2 boiled egg, green onions, slices of bamboo & red ginger garnish. To me the best part of the ramen was the rich pork bone broth. Top-notch izakaya in the neighborhood? Sign me up! For the longest time, Kitakata was one of my favorite places for Japanese appetizers and drinks, as well as the occasional "comfort food" entrée, and I was sad when they closed. There still a number of places that filled in the gap, but I feel like Izakaya Sankyu is the one that checks the most boxes. They have lots of great small bites to share with friends like kushiyaki, takoyaki, tempura fried croquettes, fresh & pickled veggies, sautéed butter mushrooms, dumplings (their gyoza was shumai had a fantastic crisp to them), seared / roasted meats (the unagi and beef were great), crispy chicken wings, maki, and they had my personal favorites - chazuke bowls, zosui bowls, and Osaka-style okonomiyaki! Pair these with soju cocktails (the sparkling hard yuzu-ade was awesome), $5 Asahi cans, Sapporo samplers, a huge selection of sake, and several varieties of Japanese and western whisky for a fun time. If it's not time to get crunk, they have teas, sodas, and virgin cocktails. If you're particularly hungry, you can fill up on excellent udon, ramen, soba, and a good variety of dinner entrées. I particularly enjoyed their grilled seafood, their Japanese spin on Korean buchimgae (chijimi?), and their generous chirashi. I've had a few bites of their teriyaki dinners, and they seemed on point as well. I wish I lived closer to Izakaya Sankyu, as their food and service was excellent. If you go by their recommendations or take advantage of their daily specials, you can enjoy a lot of food and drinks for reasonable prices while spending quality time with friends and family. I felt a little bad we took up our table for so long, but the staff seemed to enjoy serving us (and it probably didn't hurt leaving a generous tip afterward). On the flip-side, I suppose if they were TOO close by, I could kiss my diet goodbye; their izakaya fare is almost too inviting and tasty, I'd have trouble eating too much! No joke, I could probably eat three plates of okonomiyaki in a single sitting. :D read more

Incredibly good restaurant. Beef tongue and chicken gizzard were delicious. We also got the hamachi kama (cooked perfectly and very juicy) and sashimi (very fresh, excellent cuts...tuna especially). Nabeyaki udon was very savory. Chicken was delicious, noodles were chewy but soft and the broth was balanced with some sweetness. They served Coedo bottled beer on special, served in chilled glasses. First time here last week and last night (2/23/2024), we came back and dined with friends. There were 9 of us in the group. Food was delish! We had diff types of sushi, ramen, gyoza, edamame, and Taiyaki with vanilla ice cream for dessert. All were delish and brought to our table quickly. The place was clean and staff were efficient. We sat on the part of the restaurant where you sit on the floor while you eat. We enjoyed the authentic Japanese dining set-up. They have various Japanese beer and wine, and dessert options as well. Prices are slightly higher than other Japanese restaurants nearby (Ari Sushi in Des Plaines & Sushi Nikko in Arlington Heights) but we can deal with it because of the efficient service. No apologize they just decided that it was my fault and or the delivery service. Who thinks the customer should have chop sticks? When I pressed them they said no you have to chose chopsticks. We arrived Saturday at 6:45pm and the place is already teeming. We waited around 30min to get seated. For appetizers I has shisamo - nicely grilled and felt like more than half of it were filled with eggs. Delicious! And the nato had a nice nutty aroma. For my main meal I had the Sashimi Special which had chuto, otoro, sake, 6 small ami ebi, whelp, tai and hamachi. All are excellent and scrumptious! Otoro melts in your mouth! Wish they fried the shrimp heads and served them to me. Rice did not come as complimentary with the Sashimi Special, it should. I'm happy to have the selections despite the cuts (not as prime as you would see in the pics) but it is pandemic era after all. And as can be expected in a time like this, the service is mediocre but the eats are top drawer. read more
