The popcorn chicken was fine, nothing really amazing or different from other places. The seafood cocktail was good but very small. The empanada I was frustrated by because they called it "empanada", showed six in the picture, and only one small-to-medium one came out. Needless to say, we did not stay for dinner. Came here for a date on a Wednesday evening. There were a few parties, but we were seated right away and tended to. We told the waiter that it was our first time there, so he welcomed us. It was my first time having Peruvian food, so he described what the flavor profile would be like - South American with an Asian twist. I ordered Aji de gallina, a chicken and rice dish, while my date ordered Loma Saltado, steak, rice, and veggies. We also both got pisco sours - a peruvian cocktail. I got lime and date got passionfruit. They were interesting. I didn't taste much alcohol, but I'm sure a few would sneak up on you. The egg whites in the drinks made it quite frothy as well, so an acquired taste for sure. The food was good, but very pricey. We did get free dessert - mini chocolate croissants. Maybe not as strong tasting as others I've had, but still refreshing. 2) Chicharron de pollo - kiddo ordered this one. Didn't get to try it but kiddo said the flavor of the chicken was good and meat wasn't dry, but wished the exterior was crispier. 3) Pesto con lomo saltado - Hubs ordered this one and let me try the pesto pasta. I thought the pesto came through really nicely and liked that it was creamy. Hubs said good flavor with the lomo saltado. 4) Pescado a lo macho - I liked the white fish, crispy on the outside and fish was firm. Also liked the sauce and the combo of that with the garlic rice. Topped with one mussel, good amount of calamari and about 4 pieces of shrimp. 5) Anticuchos - we love beef hearts and were excited to try these. Liked that it's served with corn - different. My husband talked about how good their food was on a stop to Reno. Found out they have a buffet every last Sunday of the month and made the hour and a half trip today. Soooooo worth it! Loved the variety of the buffet with ceviches, quinoa and beet salad, chupe, aji de gallina, seco, lomo saltado plus more. They also have Peruvian desserts and fresh fruit. When the waitress came over she asked if there's anything we need and I replied "another stomach please so I can eat more" Words can't do justice how good the food was. In the past month they changed their menu. We did not realize they changed their menu until we visited for dinner recently. My favorite salmon dish is no more, but I tried the alternative salmon option. Salmon was cooked well, there was a flavorful sauce but it was too salty. My friends each ordered a chicken dish and found them both to be overstated as well. One of the chicken dishes didn't even have seasoning on their chicken. We had an enjoyable time here. We really enjoyed the empanadas. They were super flavorful! The pork tamale was okay. We also really enjoyed our main entrées. I had the salmon with the cilantro rice. The salmon itself was quite rare in the center. I think this might be the default cooking method. I believe you can ask for medium well also. My husband had the beef and spaghetti and had his meat medium well. Both dishes were very flavorful and quite delicious. We finished with the churro dessert. It was a nice light dessert to share (not too much ice cream). The restrooms were clean and well-kept. The service was good and the overall ambiance was pleasant. We did have one issue with the food, but we did not bring it up with our waitress. Other than that, our experience was very good, and the one negative thing wasn't a deal breaker. Chicha is more like a family atmosphere like going to Olive Garden, casual and relaxed. La Huaca is more on the high end more formal. Both restaurants offered Peruvian cuisines that complement each other. Depends on your mood. A more casual relaxed atmosphere, Chicha is better. The Fried Plantains were very nice. $7.95 The Peruvian style of Paella ("arroz con mariscos") was very nice. $25.95 The Salmon Costeno was good as well. $24.95 The Papa A La Huancaina although beautiful looking was not very good. The cold potato was very dry and overall we weren't crazy about this appetizer. $12.95 The Yucas fritas were pretty good. There was a slight hint of fish odor which I suspect was due to being fried in oil where possibly fish is fried in. $10.95 The red wine of the house was very descent for the price of $8.00 The Peruvian gold pale lager European style beer Cuzquena (in a bottle, none on tap) is over priced at $9.00 The loud background music (fast paced I believe Peruvian) was both too loud as well as too fast paced for me to relax comfortably. Our friend who is from Peru recommended this place, and we were intrigued by the last Sunday of the month buffet, so made reservations. There were several parties gathered before the restaurant opened, and the first seating was from 11:30 - 1pm. First time around, I took a small portion of each food offered, and cleaned my plate! Everything was authentic and well-prepared and presented. Second time, I ate the things that I liked the most, then got some of their bite-sized desserts. Then went back for more ceviche, even though I was full. It's just that good. The waiter we had was pretty terrible. He took forever to bring us water, and then disappeared. He never refilled our water, and we sat for at least 20 minutes after we were clearly done eating, waiting for the bill. We were not the only table of his that he neglected. He just disappeared! He did offer us 10% off cards for our next visit, but I will admit that we tipped him lower than usual (10% vs our usual 20%). When it's a buffet, your only job as a waiter is to refill our waters and get us our check, and he just didn't do that. So why does this place still get 5 stars? Because the food is just that good. 100% Recommend this place! My partner and I are visiting the area for and this restaurant caught my eye while browsing for places on Yelp. If you've never had Peruvian food before, this is a must! The staff are very friendly, the food is delicious, and the restaurants decor is great. One look at the menu and you'll immediately want to order everything (we definitely wanted to!). I'm got gluten intolerant or vegetarian, but it looked like they had a very good variety/selection to cater to those dietary restrictions! The dishes we ordered tastes absolutely delicious. There was so much flavor (without being overbearing). You'll definitely get food that's anything but plain. I'm not familiar with this region, I don't know what's the average dish price, but the items on the menu aren't low cost. HOWEVER, I think they give great portions so I think you're getting your money's worth! I have no comments about drinks (we just stuck to water). Other quick comments---they do take reservations, credit card, have bathrooms, and parking wasn't hard for us to find (on a Thursday evening). I thought it was awesome they had a happy hour for some appetizers so I took advantage of that to try a lot of stuff. The restaurant was quiet and empty. The server was very sweet and recommended I taste their chicha morada which is a purple corn drink loaded with health benefits. I tasted a lot of pineapple in it and overall, it was refreshing. I do have to mention that it took an insane amount of time waiting for each dish to come out when it wasn't busy at all. The other hiccup I unfortunately encountered was that they tried implementing a new system/tool for giving patrons their bill and I was charged over $80 for whatever reason which took an hour to resolve. The potatoes were also yummy. The tallarind saltado was probably my favorite. The sauce is so good over the noodles. The steak in both entrees weren't tough at all and you could even just pull it apart with your hands. The rice was also seasoned as well. The food here is really delicious! Pretty good! They start the table off with some bread and what tasted like garlic butter, the bread was pretty crispy, but I like that. For a drink I got the Chicha morada (a corn drink) it was a little sweet and honestly tasted like pineapple. I thought it was tasty but if you're not into a sweeter drink I'd get something else. My husband got a Peruvian beer and he said he liked it. I got the lomo saltado, I only remembered to take a picture in the to go container. It was pretty good! The restaurant is nicely decorated and clean (including the bathrooms). They have lunch menu for $12 and $16 with a side dish (salad or soup). While everything was not bad, it really didn't wow me at all.....Definitely not good enough to impress me and make me want to come back.
