I can't give more stars because I can longer afford to eat here. Every thing on the menu is over $17.00! Even a chicken sandwich (my favorite), they're charging a dollar for every single topping. A single slice of tomato- a dollar; a leaf of lettuce- a dollar ; a slice of onion - a dollar. It's ridiculous. A lettuce leaf for a dollar? They must not like customers. Who does that? You're paying over $5 for what is essentially a garnish.So, food is good, it's in the neighborhood but it's a ripoff. They should have a look at proper pricing that is actually related to cost. We went on a fried chicken run recently. We chose 3 places to order fried chicken from to test who had the best of the 3. We only ordered chicken thighs for the test as that is our favorite piece. We went to Capital Chicken at 112 Central Ave in Albany, NY, Halal Express Chicken and Gyros at 615 Clinton Avenue in Albany, NY and Chicken Joe's at 506 Campbell Ave in Troy, NY. I wrote 3 different reviews, one for each restaurant. This review is for Chicken Joe's. I won't include the actual review for the other 2 restaurants in this review, but I'll include their scores and placement in the contest. If you want to read the other 2 reviews please visit those restaurant's yelp page and read my review there. The third and last place we went to was Chicken Joe's on Campbell Avenue in Troy. The place was a bit more inviting looking than the first two places we went to, seeming a bit cleaner and had a more updated decor. We chose to eat in the car anyway because its just fun to do and it just speeds up and streamlined the experience for us. We liked the hustle from place to place that day. The chicken was piping hot, we had to be careful not to burn our mouths since the chicken must've just come out of the fryer. The crust was crunchy and tasty. The meat itself was very juicy, but unfortunately whereas the crust had nice flavor, the meat barely had any flavor at all. It was a stark contrast against the first two places we went to, especially Capital Fried Chicken. I'm wondering if Capital had their chicken sit in a brine before cooking it to achieve that level of flavor in the meat. Chicken Joe's would need to step up their game for me to buy fried chicken from them again, do a brine before cooking or something. It turned out that the order that we visited the 3 restaurants was the order of our preference as well. First place goes to Capital Fried Chicken with a score of 9 out of 10. Second place went to was Halal Express Chicken and Gyros who got a 7 out of 10. Third place went to Chicken Joe's who got a 4 out of 10. We will be doing another chicken run in the future and are trying to figure out the next 3 places that we'll visit. read more

A girl walks into chicken Joe's and was hoping to order a chicken sandwich. Haha so I did!! I heard about this place for years and mainly from all the advertising from the Albany empire games. So I decided to try the classic grilled chicken sandwich and I asked for the sauce on the side. I made it a combo with a side of coleslaw and a sweet tea. I also had a sweet tooth and ordered a churro. The sand which was okay but they put the sauce on it and it was DRENCHED. I was not a fan of the coleslaw. I think it had a hint of nutmeg or cinnamon which didn't collaborate well. The sweet tea was okay and the churro was amazing. They did over charge me and then had to refund my card and we had to start over so I sure hope I don't get charged 2x. read more

So I like to try and keep things as positive as possible because people don't start a business to not do it well. My husband and I went and were quickly greeted with a smile and hello. The menu seemed pretty cool and since he was craving fried chicken, we went for it. I had the 3 piece chicken with the onion rings and he had the 4 piece with the hush puppies. Upon suggestion, we each had a lemonade. The staff politely explained it would take 15 minutes because everything is made to order and we never have any issues with waiting. The chicken was crunchy on the outside and looked appealing. The onion rings were ample and they were also crunchy. Both were rather bland and I had hoped for a little seasoning. Both were pretty greasy too. I wish I could make some suggestions to help because some small tweaks would be life changing for this place. Maybe he will read this and who knows? The seating area was cute and clean as was the rest of the inside. The outside had broken picnic tables tables outside but with new could be a cute little patio area. Next to the half filled dumpster was pieces of a very busted up picnic table and your seats inside stare right at it. I so had to fight my urge to go start filling the dumpster with the busted boards to clean up the surrounding area. Curb appeal is important to draw new customers! He also had a garbage bin with a hefty bag inside to dispose of your waste. A cute little station with a place to put the trays and the baskets would be great and make it easier for customers to empty, load the items they re-use and go on your way. Also sauces are extra and you had to ask for them. Ketchup, mustard & hot sauce and napkins should be at another little station and readily available for people. He gives you a fork and a couple of napkins but we needed a knife and more napkins and craved ketchup for our sides. Overall a few personal touches would prove valuable and some seasonings to the batter would offset the grease. He gave us a nice little desert and was trying so hard so that's something to work with. What happened to this place? We used to get steaming hot, delicious chicken sandwiches and nuggets. The mozzarella sticks were "to die for". Did ownership change hands in recent years? We recently ordered chicken sandwich and a high school special. The high school special came with 5 nuggets that were chewy and a pile of unsalted fries. The chicken sandwich came with a piece of chicken that looked like a thinly pounded cutlet. The food was quick and hot, but not good. There was no bacon on it, the sub roll was stale to the point that half of it was the consistency of a crouton, the onions that were an extra dollar were soggy and had clearly been sitting around for a few days (weeks?) and the crispy chicken that was an extra dollar was one chicken finger cut into thirds. Oh and there was no melted mozzarella on it. There were two slices of soggy tomato on a 12" sub.The lettuce was fresh though, so great job on the lettuce! Just unreal how bad this was. I've been to this location a few times and the food is very consistently good. The fried chicken is nice and crispy and their hand cut nuggets are cut up into sizable chunks. I know when I went I was thinking to myself, what is a potato cone?! Basically it's mashed potatoes shaped into a small cone shape and then fried. The food is good if you are looking for a cheat meal or just some drunk food. Food recommendations: skip the banging bites, they are very small bite size pieces that are mostly breading. Go for the nuggets or the fried chicken. Got to also recommend the potato cones and fries. However, the last time I went there for take out I ordered some nuggets and their nuggets come with fries. When I got home I realized I didn't have my fries so I called. The person that took my order picked up and said that she thought I ordered just nuggets which is why I wasn't given fries. But their menu doesn't even give that option and she still charged me the same price with or without fries. Was so excited when they finally opened. We ordered some samplers of various items. Potato cones. Mashed potatoes - deed fried - how could you go wrong? Well you need to use the right brand of potato or instant potato. These were disappointing. Onion rings were ok. Clearly a frozen beer battered ring, deep fried. The problem might be the oil. If you are using the one fryer (and I admit I don't know) then the oil has many flavors in it. Mac and Cheese bites were a little dry. I respect that mac and cheese bites are hard to get right. I wouldn't order those again. Now for the best part - the chicken. The breading was unique. It could use a little more seasoning, but the breading is definitely different than others I have had. Had hungry Hockey players who downed the Sophomore sub and BBQ chicken sandwich each had fries (which was best we had in a long time). I'm really digging this place. Glad to have quality independent fast food options on the East side of the river. The chicken nuggets are quite good - I'd say they rival Chik Fil-A. The chicken sandwiches are also a hit in our house as are the fries. Interesting sides like cone potatoes (mashed potatoes deep fried) and corn fritters. Some of the sides are hit and miss though. I sampled the fried chicken sandwich and buffalo fries. The chicken was crispy and thin, but it was a small piece. The bun to chicken ratio could be better or thinner bun. It was still tasty. The buffalo fries actually won me. Crispy fries with buffalo chicken pieces on top with cutup celery for crunch texture. The small was HUGE, can't imagine the larger size. Okay, I went back. More than once. They have all the kinks worked out except the cash register thing. In three trips, it always seems like the cash register is winning the battle. LOL Regardless, I remove the one star for that. Every order has been correct with the exception of the last one. I specifically asked for EXTRA onions on a chicken sandwich, and instead, got NO onion. I keep giving them passes. I give them another here, because if I had actually looked at the receipt before I walked out, it said NO ONIONS in big capital letters. So half on you, half on me. Doesn't matter though in the end because - The food never disappoints. It's always fresh, hot, cooked to perfection. And it's obvious to me that they keep up on the oil in the fryers. There is no cross flavoring between any of the food. This is a big point score with me, as many places don't clean the oil enough and fry things together causing a chicken sandwich to have a fish fry taste. Not here. Onion rings were fresh cut, huge and cooked perfectly. Chicken sandwich was excellent (with the exception of the onion thing of course). Fried chicken was spot on breaded and fried perfectly. I will say that if you have an issue with salt, fried chicken from Joe's isn't the dish you want to get. It is heavy on the salt. I like it, but some might not. Just a heads up is all. Overall, they are getting better. And making good food can cancel out a few of the ills. Not all, but a few. I recommend this place. Try it and I don't think you will be disappointed.
