I've been a Reviewer for a long time, and it takes a lot to truly blow me away, but my first trip to the Chico Farmers Market yesterday did exactly that. If you care about regenerative agriculture and nutrient density, this is the gold standard for Northern California. The absolute standout for me was MyHarvestValley.com . I'm a huge advocate for soil health, and their regenerative walnuts are a masterclass in what happens when you treat the land right. You can actually taste the difference, it's not just a snack; it's high-quality fuel. I ended up spending quite a bit of time there just appreciating the transparency of their process. Beyond the walnuts, the entire market is a treasure trove: The Meat & Produce: I was struck by the selection of properly raised meats and organic produce. Finding proteins raised with this much integrity is rare, and the variety of healthy eating choices made it easy to load up for the week. The Nursery Finds: I didn't expect to be scouted for my garden, but I saw some of the prettiest Japanese maple starts I've ever laid eyes on. The health and structure of those starts were stunning. The Vibe: It's rare to find a market that balances such a wide variety of specialty goods while maintaining that authentic, community-focused energy. This isn't just a place to shop; it's where you go to support the people doing the hard work of regenerative farming. I'm officially a regular. read more

Wonderful farmers market EBT!!! First thing I have to mention, ebt is amazing here. Compared to Old Oakland farmers market which had a VERY long line for the ebt exchange. Over here, there was not a single line. The lady also explains to you how the ebt works but I can explain as well from what I understand. The lady will ask you how much you want to exchange, this is wherr I dont understand too much but she mentions a limit of 15$ and you can go over the limit but it goes over? Im not sure. I just did 15$. She gives you the device, you swipe, she gives you receipt and the coins.... AND some bills. Each coin and each bill is equal to 1 dollar. And idk if this was an accident but I swiped 15$, on my acc, lost 15$, but she gave me 15$ in coins AND 15$ in bills. So anyways, if this isnt a mistake, this means ebt gives you twice as much as you pay for in farmers market The bills as she explains it, only works on fruits and veggies. The coins work on anything that isnt a hot food. Lots of places to buy some fruits. Some places had a lot huge selection of heirloom tomatoes while some smaller selection. 2 stalls that sold figs. Of course no shortage of fruits and veggies over here For hot foods, tamale stall that also sold other dishes, burrito truck, empanada stall, They also have a coffee stall cause of course. Apparently people talk about chai tea, idk exactly where it is but I did see people walking with a light colored drink. The crowds arent as bad as people mention. I went on Saturday in the morning at 10am. Still a lot of people but as someone who's been to Shibuya Japan, its nothing at all. There are 4 long lanes to walk on and each surrounded by stalls I couldnt show it in the pic but I also bought a fruit danish for 5$ that I ate as I walked around. Absolutely delicious danish, the bread part was crispy outside but cheey inside. (Usually grocery stores danish can be more on the softer side) 5/5 ebt totally worth it read more

Very adorable, interesting, and robust farmers market. Much larger and better layout than the one in Fresno that I'm used to. All the basics (and plenty to choose from) cheese, honey, produce, fresh and cured meats, multiple coffee and tea vendors and much more! They had a few people performing acoustic music as well. Very charming! A must visit on a Chico weekend. We had grabbed a coffee and croissant beforehand but next time I'd plan on a farmers market breakfast of coffee , tamales, soup, or fresh pastries and chocolate for dessert. Great location in Downtown too, lots to see and do nearby. read more

Sooooo much busier and crowded during the summer months! I came around 9am on a Saturday and it was already really busy. There were a lot more vendors selling vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats, etc. The peaches and other stone fruits looked amazing, but weren't necessarily sweeter than what you can find in the South Bay/Peninsula. Of course I went back to the Sweet Cottage cart to get more pies: -Peach Blueberry Pie: Still delicious, and I loved the combination of peach and blueberry- highly recommended! -Dutch Wild Berry Pie (Half Marionberry, Quarter Blueberry, Quarter Raspberry): The berries tasted really fresh, but they add a spice in here that I wasn't a fan of. The crust was still great, but I wouldn't get this pie again. It was still easy to find parking, and it's nice that there's a good amount of shady spots right by the farmer's market. I'll definitely be back if in the area on a Saturday morning. read more

Who, me, slam a farmer's market? YES. There are a few things that make this market less than ideal. most importantly, it needs to move. Like Disneyland, it has become too crowded, too popular. I was here this Saturday morning at 8:30 and it was still crowded. Twice people knocked into me and did not excuse themselves. and, if you've read some of my over 150 reviews, rarely do I complain about rude behavior. If the aisles were wider perhaps there wouldn't be so much bumping. I prefer to choose with whom I will bump and grind. I am not a local, but I believe the City of Chico has at least one multi-story parking lot, I think around 4th or 5th. If the farmers market were re-located here the vendors wouldn't even need to put up shades, as they could be one level below the sunny top or if they want sunshine, be on top. (This would also help on Rainy days, you wouldn't even need your umbrella.). Customers could park in the levels below. This area is still within biking and walking distance of Cal State Chico. And would give room for those double wide strollers and wagons. The ramps would allow wheelchair access. Second, I think the non food vendors should be in a different location. The soap stand stinks. That should not be next to food. Perhaps close Wall Street between 2nd and 3rd and put the potters, wood crafters, and other artists across the street from the market. The same is true for the people selling prepared foods, break up the congestion. At one time I described this place as kid friendly, now it's just... not friendly. read more

Lovely, friendly community markets! Great for produce, eggs, and meat, as well as rice, nuts, bread, olive oil, pickles, nut butters and nut milk, juice, plant starts, salmon etc etc. There's not much dairy or dairy products. Saturday can get CROWDED after about 9:00 AM. Wednesday is much smaller than Sat, but parking is closer and easier and both markets have a nice selection. Masks (as of this review) are still required, and they do have high-quality free ones if you forget yours. Very few producers here are certified organic, though from conversations many seem closely aligned with organic standards. So if growing practices are important to you, plan to ask questions. read more

If you are in Chico on a Saturday then you need to stop by the Saturday Market! Highlights are: Chico Chai - iced chai with almond milk, Speedy Burrito - breakfast burrito, Sweet Cottage - Lavender Lemonade and pie, Chico Rico's Tamales - $2 each. The music artists are always cool too. They have so many different vendors at this market that you need to walk around the whole thing. There are about 5 different rows now. The other popular booths are the honey and almonds where you can sample all the different flavored almonds before you buy them. If you hit up this market at the right time you will find Duke Avocados - these have an edible peel. They sound weird, but I wait every year for these. They are hard to find and are usually only $0.50 each. Parking can seem crazy, but there is plenty of parking everywhere. Try parking a few blocks away and walk in. Street parking is free and you can also park at the City of Chico lot. They are open year round, rain or shine from 7:30 am - 1pm! They are always adding new businesses and changing their current setup to keep things fresh. You are not supposed to bring your pets into the market area. read more

The Farmer's markets happen on Saturday and Thursday (not Sunday). The Saturday market is in the parking lot for the Garden walk, and parking can be tricky. There is usually more than one bread vendor, plus houseplants, honey, and tons of fruit and veggies. The prices are reasonable and the vibe is fun. Thursday night markets include music, and are bigger and more of an "event". There are often more vendors, and in my travels, the Chico Thursday night market is second only to San Luis Obispo's in terms of food, size, produce, music and fun. Chico specializes in nuts, rices, honey, citrus fruit, kiwi, strawberries, and lots of other goodies. Market etiquette: If you've never been to a farmer's market (who are you?) well, a few tips to consider: Bring small bills (lots of them, vendors work in cash and you don't want to make them lose all their $1 in change to break your $20). Also, its polite to offer to give berry baskets back to the vendor so they can reuse them. Nowadays, bringing your own reusable bag to the market is a good idea too. read more

Definitely the one thing I can think of every Saturday morning that I want to do. Go to the Farmer's Market in Downtown Chico... Usually before going to the market, my boyfriend and I will stop by the T.Bar to get some hot tea to warm us up, then casually walk over and enjoy our time browsing the vendors. I would give the market 5 stars because I love buying from local farmers, but sometimes I get so disappointed when a vendor that was there the week before isn't there when I come back craving something. The element of surprise is so disheartening at times.... I do love the local crafts, too. Driving from the Bay Area to Chico, huge silos regularly sprout from the floor of the Sacramento Valley--the obvious signs of industrialized agriculture. I would venture to say, this region supplies an important percentage of the world's agriculture. If you think the organic/boutique farms would be similarly productive, you'd be right. I've been to a few farmer's markets in several different counties, and I have to say Chico's Saturday market is one of the best. The space they have downtown is ample for...I would estimate 40 vendors? 60? Maybe it's more. I dunno, it seems like a lot. Several of the stalls are selling the exact same produce, but most have one or two extra unique items, so it pays to explore. I was impressed by the guy selling 5 different kinds of blood oranges. They also have other important elements of a complete dinner. Meat, bread, cheese, honey, olive oil, vinegar and a lot of other stuff, and it's all local. It's nice to see so many people who are passionate about growing food responsibly, and the variety you gain from that is remarkable. In the end, the earth and the consumer win. Makes me wonder how Americans allowed themselves to get duped into eating supermarket produce to begin with. I think when I visit my peeps in Chico, I have to make sure to come back, but honestly it's going to be difficult--the obligatory binge-drinking always holds you back. But if there is another miracle of nature that allows me to be out and about before noon, I will make sure to see what's new at the market. read more

I can't think of a nicer way to start a late summer weekend with a morning trip to a farmer's market, big or small. The Chico farmer's market is quaint, but packed with plenty to see, smell, taste and listen to. Some amazing things: the rainbows of heirloom tomatoes, melons, peppers, avocados, nuts, and more. Do a quick lap through the small layout to determine who has the best prices and best produce before you buy and you will find some unique gems. I scored great deals on 100% pure almond butter, almonds, o.g. red bell peppers (3 for $1.50, compared to $7.99/lb where I am from!). Shoulda bought that whole bag avocados for less than $5! At least I found an awesome display of cacti and succulent starts and took home to Oregon an exotic aloe. The coffee stand that features a lot of different roast blends offers your choice for a cup of joe. Pretty damn cool. There are always a couple of misses: I ordered a peach filled donut from the popular donut guy, and received one filled with berries instead. Also, the pomegranate booth that features marinades, syrups, sauces, and other things had a salesman who was uber aggressive with his sales technique. He didn't listen when I told him what I wanted to sample, and tried to force all of his products onto my sample spoon in under a minute, and then seemed put out when I didn't buy anything. Here's a tip: listen to your customers, and give them time to actually taste the product before offering/not pressuring, another sample. Props to Chico for offering free downtown parking, and a rocking little market! read more

Been here a few times now with my daughter and friends. Good selection and size. A few of the stands tried to stiff me on my change. The produce stand run by the asian couple is a clear winner in my book. Tried out a breakfast empanade this morning from an old Spaniard ... not very talkative, that one ;-\ It was okay ... at 8:30am it had spent a bit too much time under the hotlamp and crust was bit off, but the filling was amazing. The Donut Rising stand was the best bang for the buck for breakfast foods. I think some more smiles, and more european-style negotiating on prices could bring this place to five stars. read more

Chris's Eggs, GRUB veggies, all sorts of cheeses, fruits, mushrooms, etc. plus, almost all of the stands are local as well as a large amount of organic providers as well. And of course, who could forget the tamales. Definitely worth it to get there early, however, towards the end of the market (noon-ish?) some produce prices will drop drastically, if there is any left, that is. Around mid morning is when the market is the most crowded, so, like I said earlier, getting there early definitely has its perks. read more

I try to make it every saturday I'm in town, and its great! One complaint though, the meat is always extremely high priced. I've been to other farmers markets in the bay area and sacramento, and in Sacramento I was blown away at how much cheaper organic grass fed beef was compared to Chico. That said everything else there was a step down from Chico's. Personally I would say buy meat from Chico Sausage Locker, or S&S. However this is the place to get the freshest, most delicious, and cheapest vegis. I always want to buy healthier meat, but it just doesn't make sense; it would almost double my food budget. Ok, now that I've complained let me go over the things that make this market the best one I've been to: Stephen Family Farms almond butter is far and away the best almond butter I've ever had, I had previously been convinced that I didn't like almond butter. Tomato season is the best, heirloom tomatoes of all colors, and a huge variety of others. The peppers are pretty crazy too, and my eggs have tasted way better ever since they've come into season. Chris' eggs are amazing, super fresh, and reasonably priced; other markets I've been to farm fresh eggs like his tend to be more expensive. Of course last but definitely not least Chico Chai, its amazing, this is typically my first stop to get something delicious to drink as I buy my vegis. However as much as I love this market, the price of meat and lack of selection in cuts of meat makes me give it 4 stars and ruin CCFM's perfect record. I'm sorry guys. Its the best I've ever been to for vegis, not the best I've ever been to for meat. read more

Please don't confuse Saturday morning Farmer's Market at the city parking lot on Wall with the Thursday night street fair on Broadway. Yes, they are both in downtown Chico, yes you can buy fresh fruits and veggies at both. There ends the similarity. Go early and avoid the crush, as well as the disappointment of goodies selling out! Chris the egg guy is not to be missed, and the wild-caught Alaska salmon in the Fall is worth waiting for! Katie the date and herb lady is a sweetheart, and the tastes and smells combine to make this a standard Saturday morning date for me and the hubby. Update: Chris the egg guy is sadly no longer in attendance due to illness. Otherwise, Saturday morning Farmer's Market just continues to improve. It is normally the highlight of our week. Also: Llano Seco Bacon. Beware... once you eat it, you will never go back to store-bought. A few vendors accept debit/credit cards. Most only take cash. read more

Good fresh food, decent prices. Organics available. There are 2 things to watch for.. The certified(local) does not mean organic, there is a good selection. There are gaps in what is available, but by careful shopping you can bring home a large healthy assortment that can be made to taste great. Some local crafts people, some artisan prepared food. Something for everyone, probably not everything to anyone. I make a point to come to these about once a month or two, and seldom find everything I want, but often find something inspirational(food wise) to work with.
