Amazing venue. The front third is tight and intimate - a classic Irish pub vibe. Especially with a table full of Guinness for the live music. The middle third is white table cloth for a bit quieter of a dinner, great for an event. The last third of the venue is outdoor in an absolutely massive beer garden which is very nicely done with a firepit area for events, huge turf area, and feels like such an escape from the city. The food was good - we got a Guinness cheddar soup which was a lot of cheddar and not enough Guinness for me. but the bread that came with it was incredible. For me, my favorite dish was the steak and Guinness pie. Rich, deep in in flavor, a good portion size, well cooked beef, loved it. The shepherd's pie was good, a very classic offering, not as distinctive as the steak and Guinness, but still very good. Can't wait to go back! read more

Decorated beautifully for the holidays! I'm so happy I was able to snag a reservation! Festive vibe and super friendly service. Alyssa took excellent care of my table. The brunch buffet is excellent! All the offerings are high quality and such a nice variety: personalized omelette stand, tacos, salads, cheese, fruits, pastries, hash, eggs, Benedicts, desserts and lots more. My husband (aahh!!) and I just got married at Chief O'Neill's and it was AMAZING!!!!! It was our dream wedding. Siobhan and her team made it all happen. She was kind, knowledgeable, and listened to all of our requests. The food was great and the vibes were even better. Our guests raved about how cool the venue was. It was unique and memorable. Walked in on a Friday around 7pm and was seated immediately. The interior is very festive and that's pretty much the only reason this place gets two stars from me. Everything else was pretty bad. We ordered a couple Guinness's which took over 20min to come. We then put in an order of a single fish and chips + cheese curd fritti. It took over an HOUR to get our food. No apologies or acknowledgment of how long it took. When we got it, we found the cheese curds to be decent while the fish and chips weren't fried in hot enough oil and found a couple pieces quite soggy. The real kicker though was when we got our check. We got hit with a $12 sharing fee because Fridays are "all you care to eat" fish and chips night and they claimed we got a second round of fish. After we clarified that we only ordered ONE order of fish and chips our waiter walked away and came back to tell us that they'd drop the sharing fee, BUT we were getting hit with an additional "service fee" because they had given us a table and we all didn't order an entree. This was NEVER disclosed to us at any point and we would've gladly sat at the bar if it was told to us when we got here. We eventually got that additional fee dropped, but I think it's wildly shady practice to try and slip these fees without any disclosure I absolutely would not recommend this place unless you're just going to the bar area to grab a Guinness. Otherwise this place is not worth your time and money. read more

Unlike many Chicago restaurants, Chief O'Neills (CON) welcomes groups of 4+, what a treat! Bring the whole fam' damily! :-) Instead of being immediately assessed a mandatory 20% tip for your group of 5 or 6+ CON makes no such imposition. I want to be able to decide the tip and they allowed me to do so, awesome! CON is simply a not miss because of food quality, presentation, reasonable prices, festive Christmas atmosphere, great service, and no fee street parking. The bangers & mash were delish, as was the shepherds pie, portions were reasonable, and we were all served at the same time. Our waiter was attentive, efficient, and seemed really glad to be in his role & welcome us. He even offered to take our group's picture. We'll be back in warmer weather to sit outside. We went to Chief O'Neill's in Avondale to celebrate my husband and his sister's birthday. They're twins, so it felt like the perfect spot for a shared celebration. We had a party of five and managed to snag a reservation on a Thursday night, though the place was absolutely packed to the brim. Because of how busy it was, service was extremely slow. Our appetizer took about 30 minutes to arrive and our mains took even longer. It really felt like a short staffing issue rather than a lack of care. There was also a mix-up where one of our dinners arrived as a side portion of salmon instead of the full entrée, but they fixed it right away, which we appreciated. The entire restaurant was decorated for Christmas and it was incredibly charming, easily one of the highlights of the evening. The food itself is on the expensive side, but it is good. Standouts for us were the steak crostinis, salmon, the steak pot pie and the burgers, all solid choices and well prepared once they arrived. Since it was a birthday dinner, we ordered a slice of cake. They don't do anything special for birthdays, which is totally fine, but it did feel odd to wait another 30 minutes for a very small slice of clearly premade cake that we paid for. I'm not sure what happened there, but it was a strange note to end the night on. Overall, Chief O'Neill's has great atmosphere and good food, but pacing and service really need tightening, especially on busy nights. I'd return, just with adjusted expectations to set aside three hours for dinner when it's busy. read more

The quality of the food was excellent, everything was well prepared and kept at the right temperature, and the variety was great without feeling overwhelming. Nothing felt picked over or old. It's disappointing to see such a decline from a place that was once must have been genuinely good and is still heavily hyped. The service was minimal at best, drinks had to be sent back, and several basic service details were missed throughout the meal. Would I recommend it? Perhaps for a beer and the atmosphere, but not for the food or overall dining experience. Definitely a vibe for holiday. read more

The Pot Roast was excellent, but the chicken was the real star! The moist parts were so uniquely flavorful--each bite was better than the last. Many other restaurants use the word "brunch" to get attention but not in is true meaning. One of the few restaurants in Chicagoland that offers a great and true all-you-can-eat brunch buffet is Chief O'Neill's Pub & Restaurant at 3471 N Elston in Chicago. It has a large dining area that was not crowded. The main buffet offered a good selection of fresh food options, and a very good dessert section. it wasn't that extensive either. i recommend Chief O'Neills for it's great sunday brunch. Make sure to make reservations for your family. You may have to book it a week in advance. There was plenty of free street parking nearby. read more

It had been years since I had been here for brunch. Not sure why we haven't made more visits here; maybe because it is not on a main walking strip and you do have to make an effort to go there. The day we showed up, it was a beautiful day and we were able to sit outside with our friends, which I was not even aware of as the last time we were here was in the winter. I will give Chief props on the selection of foods they offer during their buffet selections. There is something there for everyone: salads, seafood, meat, pasta, fish & chips, cheese, pastries, you name it. Food is solid and fresh and they keep it coming out of the kitchen. Of course I did the bottomless mimosas, but for those of you who like the Bloody option, they do have a Bloody Mary bar. And we had a nice surprise while dining...someone was celebrating something (not sure what), but we got to hear a bagpipe serenade and I love the bagpipe, so it was a win for me. Food was lacklustre . To be fair they were extremely busy. Food could have been great but no dish had been seasoned. It was almost like they had ran out of salt/pepper. I did manage to find just about the only salt and pepper pots in the place. Yes you can add seasoning after but I rarely have to these days. Service was okay. Waters were never refilled. Holiday decorations were beautiful and the amount of effort may be enough to stop in for a drink. Being part Scottish, I could not understand a Scotch Egg being called a "Scotia Egg". That too was also poorly seasoned. Are the chefs not tasting the food? My 13 year old summed it up best "bland". Not their fault but finding parking is difficult. Fantastic as always! This review is based on our visit on a Sunday night, but I've never walked out the door unhappy. Service was both warm and efficient. We made reservations because we were coming in with a group of family from out of town to enjoy the Sunday evening live music. We were treated so well. Everyone was thrilled with how good their food was. The mussels, cheese curds, pot roast, mushroom chicken, salmon pasta and the burger were all served piping hot and so full of flavor everyone was insisting everyone else take a bite or trade plates. I would have taken pictures, but everyone tucked in too fast. It's a given the Guinness will be on point, but kudos to O'Neill's for the most generous wine pour I have ever be served! Definitely come here for the iconic Christmas decor, vibes, and live Irish music! We dined here on a Sunday night and loved the little Irish band in the corner. The decorations and old-timely feel really made this restaurant experience so special. We enjoyed the complementary Irish soda bread (kind of sweet tasting) and also ordered scrumptious cheese curds for the table. My glass of house Cabernet Sauvignon was tasty and rich with the meal, so I opted for one of their tequila cocktails on the menu after which was nice and refreshing. I had never really had Irish food before so ordered the Shepherd's pie not knowing what it was. Unfortunately it wasn't the type of dish I typically like- basically ground sauced meat with mashed potatoes on top. Not for me, nor was my boyfriend's corned beef. My side salad was good though, and my friend's fish fry was more up my alley. Service was great. I'll just have to order differently next time and check out their nice beer garden in better weather! read more

i've been coming to chief o'neill's for years and have always loved it, so i was really disappointed by my experience during a recent christmas brunch with a group of 9 friends. the food was wonderful as always. that has never been the issue here. unfortunately, the service completely missed the mark. our waitress was passive aggressive and rude throughout the entire meal, which put a damper on what should have been a festive occasion. early on, when one of my friends ordered a guinness, the server responded with, "if you haven't noticed, it's freezing outside, so our lines are frozen." the tone was unnecessarily snippy, and honestly, how would a customer be expected to know the status of the restaurant's keg lines? the biggest issue came when the bill arrived. now for context i've done the sunday brunch and bottomless drink package about 5 times over the past year and i was surprised to see that all of our drinks had been rung up à la carte. when we asked if the bottomless drink package applied, the server became visibly annoyed and snapped that no one asked to order it. every drink we ordered was included in the bottomless package, and it was not explained or offered at any point. she made a big ordeal about fixing the bill, but once corrected, nine bottomless drink packages were added to the bill, as one of our friends does not drink, and we saved nearly $100 compared to what we would have been overcharged. i will continue coming back because the food and atmosphere are usually fantastic, but this experience was a reminder that service matters just as much. i hope management addresses this, because it was a frustrating way to spend a holiday brunch. read more
