We were there on Friday, so the fish and chips were all-you-can-eat. So crispy on the outside and flakey on the inside. So yummy. The chips were crispy and paired perfectly with the fish splashed with the malt vinegar. The green peas were good, but my favorite was the Stovies. If you've never had proper Stovies, this is your chance to try them. Potatoes and onions with bits of roast kind of like mashed potatoes or a very thick stew. So yummy. Now we're talking. DoP is as close an authentic Scottish pub as anything I've been in, in this country. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip. Whiskey fans, you'll love the huge selection along with the impressive beer selection. Yelp should really hype this as a whiskey bar, too. It more than qualifies. The cuisine is phenomenal. Definitely a place to bring a large party on your first visit, so you can sample a multitude of wonderful creations. Pro Tip: if you can tolerate a large quantity of fish, visit on a Wednesday for their AYCE Fish & Chips. I've had many hum drum AYCE dinners that are drab and only fill you up. Not this one. It's a great meal and a great deal. The Shepherd's Pie was fabulous, as was the Bangers and Mash. They've created a Haggis Burger that has to appease Americans, yet, still be haggis. A tall order since most would hate "true" haggis. Fear not, it's not your grandfather's haggis, it is a tasty burger. The fries were great but I'd recommend the Tattie Skins. We tasted so many different malts it was hard to pick a favourite. No foolin' they had island malts, highland malts, speyside and even a couple from the lowlands. The fried leeks are a bit pricey at $16 but it's unique and interesting and there is a lot of of it. It's enough to be a full meal since it's deep-fried. I have such fond memories of Duke of Perth from way back when - my go-to for fantastic fish and chips. Sadly, my recent visit left me feeling a bit deflated. While the service was still genuinely friendly and efficient, the star of the show, the fish, just wasn't what it used to be. The batter was still crispy, which is a plus, but the fish itself lacked the flavorful punch I remember. It was... just okay. The fish is very fresh though. The chips were decent, nothing to write home about. It's a shame to see a once-favorite spot lose some of its magic. It was creamy and smooth, a beverage reminiscent of a Guinness so rich and delicious. For our meal we both chose the Fish and Chips. They turned out to be up to the great reviews we read online. We came here on Ash Wednesday which was also Valentine's Day. We arrived at just the perfect time when there was plenty of tables available. The place got packed by the time we finished eating. They start you off with two strips with fries(chips) and green peas. Once you finish that plate, you can then ask for fish. The fish itself tasted fresh and perfectly fried in a beer batter. It paired well with the malt vinegar. Would definitely take advantage of this special again in the near future. I didn't get anything to drink on this visit. All you can eat fish and chips on Wednesdays! This was probably the best fish and chips I've had in a really long time! Perfectly fried, not greasy, definitely not over batter, good fish to batter ratio and it's like under $20 for all you can eat. Can't beat that! The tater sauce was also excellent. Good crispy chips and peas were pretty good too. We sat at the bar they have a large whiskey selection. Service is nice and quick. Lots of seating inside also! New Location on Broadway, great decor. We were there early - right at 5:00 when they opened. The Guinness was good (though from the can), and the Jameson was a great accompaniment (can you tell our party likes to drink?) Our server was very attentive with quick refills of drinks, and answered our questions as well as informed us of some of the history of the restaurant. Most of us had the fish fry, which was the best we've had in Chicago. The servings were huge! We weren't even there on a "all you can eat" night, and we all had leftovers. All you have to know: Wednesday and Friday nights are all-you-can-eat fish and chips. As a big fan of fish and chips, I think all fish and chip plates are perfect. Some are just more perfect than others. In terms of Duke and Perth, they serve up a very solid version of the dish. Peas and accompanying tartar sauces are also very solid. The couple times I've gone I didn't opt to get a drink just because I wanted to save room in my stomach for more food, but seems like they have a pretty robust selection. This spot is definitely a game of quantity over quality, but that's not to say it's not delicious. I think maybe just the seasoning of the fish isn't out of the park, but I guess people say that about food from the UK/Ireland all the time, right? Tartar sauce and ketchup can do wonders though. Be forewarned though, consumption of this much fried food will definitely put you at risk of feeling absolutely trash afterwards and/or some heartburn. But for me, that's a risk I'm willing to take every now and then. A great pick if you're just trying to maximize on fish and chips. Love this low key spot for some comfort food! Tried the fish and chips and the hearth fire crusted burger. Fish and chips were really good - Very crisp and meaty. Also came with a generous portion of peas and fries. I didn't have leftovers but was very satisfied. The blue cheese really made the burger special. I look forward to returning for a shepherds pie in the cooler weather. The lo rez beer on tap was a really great white, but I personally loved that they have cider on tap! I am not sure where to Start with Duke of Perth in Chicago's East Lake neighborhood.  Diamond among diamonds in the rough would be a great place to start.  It is unassuming and looks like your typical Irish pub.  Yet, it has layers.  And when I said Irish, I really meant Scottish because there is a very extensive amount of Scotch here. So, if you like  craft draft, the gentleman that orders the beer has a passion for it. He knows his beers.  And the beer here is special. I honestly wish I had tried the food.  Because if the food was half as great as the scotch and beer, absolution!!!! This place is WAAAAAY overrated. The only people I hear praise the fish & chips are gluttons who go on all-you-can-eat night. I have tried them on one such evening and the fish was oily, not crisp and had an unpleasant, funky taste. Just to be fair, I went again when it wasn't all you can eat, just to make sure that wasn't the reason for the poor quality. Nope. It's just really crappy fish. There are a lot of Scotches, but they practically measure the 1-oz pours with an eye dropper. A drink is barely enough for your taste buds to register. In a city like Chicago with a vibrant British Isles pub culture, there are so many better options, many right in the neighborhood. read more

We happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to drop in and see how the old place is doing. It was a beautiful Friday so we got to sit out on their back patio. Seriously, is there anything better than sitting outside enjoying a good drink and food in the summer sun in Chicago? If you're going to come here, you might as well order something authentic. Personally, our favorite is the fish and chips. Not too heavy on the batter. Great malt vinegar to dash onto the fish. Fries are always super crispy. And the one thing that always gets me really excited is they actually have a cider on tap. Of course they also have ciders in bottles but it is just so nice to find a proper bar with a proper cider. They also do very good Scottish tasting flights if you're in the mood. The interior of the bar is always perfectly dark.
