Went there for dinner a few weeks ago on a Sunday evening. It was not very crowded so we picked a high top in the bar area. My wife had a wrap, my daughter the same and I had the 3-11 burger. Staff Needs Training My family went for an early dinner, about 5pm. The place was empty except for the bar area. There was one other family in the seated area. The entire wait staff was at the end of the bar talking and serving friends. Two wait staff walked by our table, after about 15 minutes we left since no one was willing to wait on us. Chief's falls short both with the restaurant and the bar. The historic firehouse theme is so random, considering it is in one of the newest building in Lake Forest. The menu is extremely bland, there is nothing unique. I once ordered the pizza and realized I could have gone a few doors down to CVS and picked up the same pizza in the frozen foods section. As far as the bar is concerned, the lay out is very inconvenient. On a busy night you can hardly maneuver in the bar area and yet there the other half of the room is practically empty due to a misplaced dividing wall. You can either be extremely cramped or isolated. Such a shame considering it is such a nice space. The TV's are excessively nice, however two blocks down at the LANTERN you will find much better food, an awesome bar atmosphere, and plenty of new TV's that will meet your needs. read more

I am really liking this place. Not a typical pub, a bit nicer but you can definitely have a lot of fun here. It is great for lunch and typical pub nights. Stopped in the other day for the first time. Nice place, though the location is a little unfortunate (south of downtown and in a nondescript strip mall). Solid sports bar in downtown Lake Forest. Great food, solid beer list. It's usually bustling, which is a good sign of a great place. It's my "go to" spot for sports and they have the NFL Sunday Ticket, so I can hang out and watch every football game and check my fantasy team. Pot Roast sandwich is incredible.​ read more

An attractively designed local spot that seems to be catching on with a wider crowd. However, while the thin-crust pizza is some of the best I've tasted in the burbs, the burgers seem rather average. The times I have had their sandwiches they were rather lackluster as well although the fries are crisp and mighty tasty. The atmosphere is authentic firehouse and the talk at the bar is often related to the fire service as the owner and a number of relatives, I believe, are current or former firefighters. We ate at The Lantern our first day in town and what a BIG mistake that was. Shithole. Period. BAD experience. So we tried Chief's and were surprised. Great atmosphere, the burger was very good. I like my food as rare as possible and it was made to order. After the horrible experience at the lantern for lunch (did I mention what a shithole) I would highly recommend Chief's Pub. Employees don't care, the location is in a strip mall, and the inside looks like every other bar you've seen in your life. It's frequented by older people, families, and others who don't know that you can get the same food, cooked better, and with decent service, at the Lantern down the street. Please go somewhere else because here you aren't going to get the attention to food and service that your money can buy elsewhere. It isn't a pub really, it's a restaurant and bar. This place doesn't have much personality. A previous reviewer said "don't expect fine cuisine!" Well it doesn't have to be "fine cuisine" to be food that tastes good. Keep in mind that I went here a few months ago, so things may have changed. I grew up in Lake Forest and can tell you that you should go to Highwood or Highland Park if you're looking for a real pub. read more

The decor is awesome!!! The food is great. I love the wraps and the pizza. You can't beat the 1/2 price pizza on sundays. The bar is separated from the lower tables so you can come with family or with your friends for drinks. read more

Great concept but the service suffers. Haven't had one good server in 6+ visits. No training from a competent server ever. Food is good although most people order the mediocre pizza. Sandwiches are solid. I've NEVER gotten sat with a menu and there is no hostess. The craft beer and kitchen is the saving grace here when other things in Highwood are closed on Sundays. This is a close 3 star" review but up your service game Chief's, or you'll end up like Barrel Crossing Taphouse and be out of business in a few years. Lastly, I got my check half way through eating for 5 minutes (scarfing lunch at this point to get my kid back to her scheduled physical therapy) without ask of refill for my empty beer and just assuming I'm done! I'm in listening, as is my 3 year old, the server say to her co-worker as they bus the table "I need to get my sh*t together. Yes they do. All of them in this place. Disgrace! I took my Mom to lunch before a movie and was so disappointed. I had ordered the Southwest Salad and my Mom had the sliders. The salad was terrible! Wet iceburg lettuce with black beans, a couple of avacado slices and chicken. The southwest salad is better and Mcdonalds! My Mom's pork sliders were tough and she did not eat the second one. Wasn't terribly thrilled with this place. We ordered the Calamari, Fish Tacos and a Burger. My husbands burger wasn't good it wasn't bad just wasn't stellar according to him. He said it tasted pre-made and frozen. The Calamari wasn't earth moving either. It was okay. The cocktail sauce was tasty. I ordered the fish tacos. They were good and flavorful. The fries needed a bit more fire. They were good and had a good flavor they just needed to be cooked longer. Service could have been better. She was nice and very sweet just took forever to get our drinks. The atmosphere of this place was a bit much. Too much going on with the 16 televisions all broadcasting something different. I really wish that when we arrived @ 9:00pm responsible parents would have put their children to bed. Its a good place to get a limited number of beers, thats about it. read more

This would have gotten only one star if our food and drinks weren't good. The service is absolutely terrible. We had to wait 30 minutes for a server and then an additionally 30 to even get our drinks. It was a hassle to get our servers attention the entire time. Given that this pub is nothing special, chasing my waiter down makes the entire experience even worse. I will never be coming back here. After ordering an apple martini (the same drink since they opened), he returned to tell me that it would be awhile - they were looking for a recipe. I gave 5 stars to help balance the reviews. On its own, it is a 4-5 star bar-food place. But it is very clean. Also has much better drinks, MUCH friendlier staff than The Lantern. Good and reliable, and the best Lake Forest has to offer in the way of pub food at a decent price. The crowd is varied - parents with kids, young people meeting up, and people like us - a middle aged couple wanting a decent dinner. Its not perfect: a bit loud, could use candles on the tables and the waitresses are not always on top of it. But they are courteous and the food is generally a very good value compared to other places in town. read more

This is the best little Pub. My son goes to Lake Forest College, so when we visit ,we always go to Chiefs. Very clean and beautiful inside and the bar itself is something to take in. Great food. I highly recommend eating and having a drink. read more

Buyer beware!! They serve 13oz Guinness, and try to pass it off as a full pint. The bartender denied it to my face, even though the Guinness glasses LIST the ounce capacity on the side. $6.50 for less than a pint is offensive. We ordered the potato skins (acceptable), Caesar wrap (pathetically small), and the turkey club (skimpy). This used to be a favorite meeting place for our group, but we probably won't be back, now that they're skimping on our pints! read more

I cannot believe no one has written about the wings here yet. they are unreal. my buddies come from the city to golf at Lake Bluff Golf Club with me and we go to this place RELIGIOUSLY after our round. After a while my buddies noticed that I would get the wings EVERY time. There is a reason for this - wings are the only thing I have ever gotten to eat at Chiefs, and they are the only thing I will ever get. I do not know what they do to these unbreaded, tender pieces of magic, but they are god damn masterful. By the end of golf season, we would have a table of 4 and each of us would be getting 12 wings. golf season is now over, but the wings are still DELICIOUS ! read more

We went to Chiefs a couple different friday nights and each time it was packed and the service was great. You could tell everyone working wanted to be there and was enjoying themselves..making it a fun atmosphere. I had a salad with very fresh ingredients and my husband had fish and chips one time. He said it was the best he has ever had. The time before that he had a burger and specified the ingredients he wanted...mushrooms, bacon, etc. He said it was delicious. Great atmosphere for all. This is a great place to hang out for drinks and appetizers. I have never had a meal here- but everything looks good! Would make a trip back to try the pizza- looks incredible. The owner is more than accommodating, and the bartenders are classy, friendly and polite. Safe location and comfortable atmosphere, great for "girls night out". Service is excellent. Great community watering hole and eatery. Whether you're with the family or meeting the guys....Chief's is the place to be in Lake Forest. The staff is always cheerful and friendly. The food is always good. I've been there at least 30 times and the food has always been good. I personally love the rueben. The Italian Sausage is also very good. The kids love the cheeseburger and onion rings. My personal favorite is the ICE COLD beer. Great selection. Great place to catch-up with friends over some beers and watch sports. Way, WAY over priced...It will say one price in the menu and you are charged another price. Ordered a 8.95 cheese burger w/ff that came with it, (but they really dont') and got mushrooms on it for an extra price. Total cost $14.62 Well, I got 4 mushrooms. I order to go because I work close and never get a complete order (according to the menu) I will NEVER order from this place again! I will NOT recommend this place to anyone! read more

I went to Chiefs a couple days ago with some of my buds after finals has ended to celebrate and get some good food. The food was delicious as always, but we had a little trouble with our waitress. Firstly, we were one of the four or so groups there, so there wasn't much going on. But, it seems Chiefs is a little understaffed; our waitress was waiting the other 2 tables and dishing out drinks at the bar. That being said, our waitress only came to our table 3 times: to take our order, to bring the food, and to put down the check. I ran out of water 10 minutes in, and a man came by and refilled two of the glasses but was never seen again. The check was kind of a problem. We asked for separate checks but our waitress said that that would be too much work for her; it would be too hard. This was not the friendly, the customer is always right kind of service that you will get at Egg Harbor a couple shops down. Next time we will just go there. read more

So the last time I was here, was about a year ago and wasn't satisfied. The service wasn't the best, food was ok-ish and just wasn't a great meal. So I decided what the heck, places can change over a years span so tried it again, this time was honestly worse. Lettuce pieces scattered on the floor with waitresses just walking over them. Waited quite a while for someone to take our order, after finally ordering, when it eventually came out, my friends meal was wrong, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and it came with a pretzel bun.. Definitely not a good combo. When we got a hold of the waitress and told her about the order problem she said she'd bring out what was right and never did, had to get another waitresses attention to get it. And throughout the whole dinner there were way more tables than customers. If there were a ton of people and few waitresses I would feel sympathy and understand the confusion, but attitude and poor service during a quiet uneventful night, no excuse.
