If you want a place that looks like a Mexican restaurant, this is the place to go. The ambiance was great and it felt like the many Mexican restaurants i have back home in Colorado. The staff was friendly and the food came out quick. Unfortunately, that is where the positives end for this restaurant. The flavor of the food was severely lacking. It was noticeable in the salsa that was served with the chips and the 2 entrees I ordered on separate occasions. The consistency of the salsa was way too liquidy, almost as if the salsa was watered down. The flavor was dull as well. The first time I came here I ordered the chinichanga and the second time I ordered chicken enchiladas. Though the chimichanga wasn't bad, it wasn't good either. The chicken enchiladas were also severely lacking in flavor and just bland. Everything needed more flavor. This all wouldn't have been so bad if the prices were reasonable but they were quite high and not worth the value. Overall, a pretty good Mexican - American restaurant. Service is always quick, and it's your traditional, setting as far as colors and booths go with the typical advertising on the tables... They don't scratch make much of their food as far as I can tell, which would definitely elevate the experience. If you want great Mexican cuisine in the Pacific Northwest, Chihuahua is the place! This place has the ambience and the food to go with it! I had the three tacos entree which was terrific! I had the steak tacos which was cooked to perfection. The portion size was huge! The alcohol selection was decent, I chose the margarita on the rocks to wash down my entree. After several years absence we returned to the Chihuahua for lunch. My wife ordered the special, enchilada and rellano, and I ordered #11, burrito and rellano. When they were served they were identical plates. Now enchiladas and burritos are similar, meat wrapped in a tortilla, but I know the difference! First of all the food is bland, I don't want to slam too hard but I've had microwave enchiladas better than this. My drink was served with a lime so dry that it literally fell apart while squeezing and didn't even give me a drop of juice. The server has been too preoccupied to even have an interaction with me longer than 10 seconds while I am one of four tables seated in the entire restaurant. I have asked for a glass of water twice now and still haven't gotten one even though I have been readily served my alcoholic beverage. After being here an hour and a half I flat out feel ignored. When my combo of two enchiladas was served it was literally just brown and yellow.... Enchiladas with red sauce, Mexican blend shredded cheese, rice, and beans... no lettuce or tomato. The ground beef filling tasted like something I would eat in my state-provided middle school lunches. I found this all out after burning myself on the plate... the server didn't even have the courtesy of warning me of that while he dropped the plate off at my table and rushed away before I could get a single sentence out. While I do recognize that I am writing this on a Friday at lunch time and the vibe might not be what the owner had intended at this time, the restaurant still feels anemic and dry just like the lime served with my drink. The only redeeming qualities I can find are the generous helpings of rice and beans as well as the (extremely) boozy $4.99 happy-hour margs. If you find yourself in Ferndale and craving Mexican food just do yourself a favor and drive 20 minutes south to Bellingham to literally any other Mexican restaurant, the cost of gas will be worth it. We have become somewhat regulars at Chihuahua's for about 7 months and I will say it's pretty good food and the servers are somewhat hit and miss. The have Negro Modelo on tap, which is a plus for us and the Sangria is pretty good. I love their Enchilada & Tamale lunch combo and Honey gets the Chicken Mole which is almost always spot on. I had their Taco Beef Salad and it was actually one of the best ones I ever had. The shell was crispy and an equal amount of fillings. It wasn't too liquidly or greasy--just perfect. If you like Fried Jalapeños, they are good IF you can get them to the table. Most times they forget them. Overall, it's a decent restaurant with good specials, fair prices and OK service. read more

We've been customers of Chihuahua for nearly two decades! In fact, it used to be a regular stop after church on Sundays because we could sit in the back next to the fountain and it would keep our twins occupied while we waited for lunch to arrive. They've since added even more space (and another fountain!), but kept up on their good food, super-friendly service, and of course their famous margaritas. They also have my favorite Mexican beer, Negra Modelo, on tap which is not easy to find in these here parts. My go-to item on the menu is often their delicious tortilla soup, which arrives piping hot in a huge bowl, and is adorned with fresher-than-fresh avocados. I'm seriously salivating for this soup just thinking about it. They also offer the standard Mexican restaurant fare of enchiladas, tacos, etc., but also some specialty items including a delicious posole that is often posted as a special. You can get it with chicken or pork. On a recent visit I was in the mood for a chile relleno, which was part of one of their lunch combos and a great deal at just $6.95. Including my pint of beer the meal was a great deal. And I can't say enough about the service, which is always...ALWAYS...friendly, quick, professional, and helpful. read more

When they speak of Staples in your diet I don't believe anyone was meaning eat actual staples. Yes we realize accidents happen, and we're fine with letting it slide, but then we got the bill and what was supposed to be the lunch menu prices and it was all the dinner prices, which we asked to have changed and they fixed it willingly, but it is also the second time different server that this has happened to us. As far as service it was quick, but speed is not everything there needs to be quality as well in the product one is serving. I have had nothing, but amazing experiences here. This is also a follow up response to the individual whom rated this location a 2 star review due to their experience. This former rater, went on to explain how their partner was neglected after hurting themselves when attempting to use the restroom. This reviewer also went on to illustrate the worker by naming him the "older Mexican cranky man" and this person continued to repeat this phrase various times throughout their review. I would like to, in a sense, give other customers a better understanding, due to the fact that I find it absolutely disgusting how somebody can openly choose to go to a location that is Mexican and go on to insultingly say this phrase in their review. I was genuinely disappointed to see that people are still this uneducated and simply have no moral decency. You don't stop to think that maybe there was a misunderstanding or miscommunication, instead you label the server and are quick to act on your own privilege's. Of course a restaurant is to hopefully be kept up to current standards, but if you like to judge people and only call them by their ethnicity... maybe attempt going someplace else. I truly hope that Chihuahuas gets to have better experiences with sincere and kind customers. Just because you are going out to eat and be served by others, does not mean that you treat them as less than an individual like yourself. The entitlement is very unnecessary. There is no need to belittle anybody nor address their ethnicity. It speaks volumes. Things happen, and sometimes are not in the control of the servers or other individuals who are working. All in all, I would like to explain how peaceful and kind it has been when going to this restaurant. If it's a fairly non-busy day, the food is out quickly, even on the days it is busy, they are efficient with their time. I have not been here in years and I was craving Mexican food so we decided to go go here. I was really surprised to see how busy it was on a Tuesday there was a 30 minute weight everybody was very polite. I guess I was just super disappointed in food. I really wanted a Carnegie soda platter but it was super ridiculously listensive so I just chose to get a combination plate. I was also craving a really good chili relleno. The combination plate I had a would have had Chilli relleno, enchilada, and a taco. When my plate came it looked just like my nephew's plate which we ordered something totally different so I was a little bit confused. They did bring me my taco on a separate plate. It was supposed to be a nice crunchy taco but when I ate it 10 minutes into my meal it was just all soggy. It came with some lettuce and shredded cheese it was pretty flavorless there was nothing on the table to put on my taco there was no salsa there was nothing. It was really hard for me to tell the difference between my chili relleno and my enchilada. My chili relleno a tiny little pepper filled with next to nothing I couldn't even tell you what kind of batter it had. I was just so disappointed I won't be going there again. There was a really big helping of beans and rice which were both laborless and again no spices nothing on the table toon the table to spice it up. It's basically Mexican food made for Americans to make it think like it's authentic Mexican food it's tasteless. I really hope the owners of this restaurant read this and fix it although the restaurant was crowded on a Tuesdays so they probably think they're doing something right but for somebody whoCraves good food this will not be a restaurant I'm ever going back to anytime soon. Our favorite place to go for Mexican food in the area. They used to serve the most incredible street tacos on Friday nights, but unfortunately they recently stopped doing that. However we still find plenty of tasty things on the menu. It's a busy spot and sometimes the servers can seem pretty rushed. And since they're in the heart of the one of the craft beer capitals of the world, I wish they had a slightly bigger beer selection. Sadly my favorite mexican restaurant in town has succumbed to mediocrity. While the margaritas remain my favorite part of the whole Chihuahuas experience, I can't say the same for the food. Tonight our salsa had so much chili sauce in it even my asbestos mouth husband couldn't eat it. The beef fajitas were greasy and noticeably devoid of beef, just piles of foul tasting onion and a few peppers, and a minuscule amount of thinly shaved brown stuff. Totally unacceptable. The condiments that accompanied them were underwhelming. A tablespoon of nasty tasting guacamole that was half diced tomatoes and tasted suspiciously like fish, another tablespoon of sour cream and some more diced tomatoes and a pinch of shredded lettuce. As soon as you enter the restaurant you will question your decision of picking this restaurant. The tastes like straight Tabasco sauce and is more along the lines of a purée'd mush. The quality of the chimichanga I ordered not only looked like something I could pick up in the frozen food section at Costco, but had the taste to match it. I doubt the inside of the restaurant had ever seen a duster or even a simple damp cloth to wipe it down. I'm not even sure a fresh coat of paint could revive it. The queso is terrible and and the serving size of chips served along with it wouldn't even be an adequate serving portion for one. This has been one of my favorite places for many years. I have ignored all the poor reviews until now. Went with family for wife's birthday. In the past a group like our's would have had to wait for a table. We got seated immediately. Service staff was ok,but not the really friendly group they used to be. The menu has been downsized,and my go to chicken dish is no longer available. I wanted a combination enchilada/ fish taco plate,but could only get fish taco in a meal. Went for beef enchilada and found them very bland,with the texture of a meat loaf. Tried the grandsons chicken enchilada,also very bland. Ok for a kid I guess. The server spilled some liquid off a plate on to my daughters leather jacket. The owner used to always be inthe restaraunt greeting people and making sure things go as they should.The last few times Ive been there,he is not around Until now I have never felt a need to look any place else for Mexican food.
