We got in at 6:30pm on a Friday evening immediately at a table (all booths were taken). The service from the seating to the waitress was amazing. Crazy attentive, communicated well and worked as a team. So nice to see and experience! I had their blackberry lemonade which was yummy and their chips and salsa is great too and comes complimentary. Orders came out right and in good time and was delicious. I loved my cheese enchilada made with real cheese (some places use weird fake stuff but not this place!) and my carne asada was cooked to perfection and super tasty. Portions are generous for sure!! Let me tell you about this little gem! We stopped here to celebrate with victory tacos and enchiladas after a lacrosse game in Lynden. The boys were hungry! We were greeted with smiles and immediately seated. Our waitress catered to our Little Warriors' spice level with two different salsas and chips and beans. The menu here is extensive, offering a variety of dishes which I took note of and appreciated. Our waiter was incredibly personable and attentive and every one of us enjoyed our plates. We relished our scrumptious dinner at this beautiful and authentic Mexican restaurant. They don't joke about the jumbo sized el agave drink..it's pretty big as you can compare with the Sex on the beach cocktail beside it.. and funny thing is, it's not even their biggest size!! I assumed it might be a little too diluted like a Fish bowl drink, but no..it was pretty strong and my added Mango flavor choice blended perfectly. This is a family- friendly, easygoing place with super nice staff (including the owner who was on site). The food was average-plus (not bad at all - just not fine dining exceptional). My son and I have been having lunch here, weekly, for over ten years. The food is always fresh and delicious. Try the Pork Fajitas and ask for them extra crispy. Or, and this is a little bit weird, try their Bacon cheese burger. I think it's the best in the county. The restaurant is quiet and the booths are comfortable. The service we received was warm and welcoming the server we had had the most contagious and beautiful smile you have ever seen, the ambiance feels like you are in a Spanish town from the colorful warm orange walls and the beautiful painting that covers one entire wall. Also the tables are detailed with rose designs that are done in such a unique but simple and beautiful style. There is a pretty good menu of selections. For a starter I decided upon the stuffed jalapeños. They arrived really quick...instantly making note of the breading, these are not prepared in the restaurant but rather from a commercial purveyor...someone like "SISCO". While they did have a good flavor, the outside was hard while the inside was "warm" and some were cold. My main course arrived...beef enchilada and a chile relleno, comes with beans and rice. The chile relleno was sitting in its own pool of water...evident that the chile relleno was also from someone like "SISCO" and was frozen. To me the water on the plate is evident that the meal is microwave heated. A real disappointment. I had believed this restaurant to be the real thing. I won't be back. Sorry. read more

I am not too impressed by their food and the margaritas. I ordered skinny margaritas and it was bitter due to too many limes. My husband ordered lime margaritas and his was also not out of the world. We have had better at other Mexican restaurants. As far as food is concerned, I ordered lunch special - one taco and one enchilada. Toco was not good at all so I ate 1/4 and left rest and the enchilada was okay. My husband ordered chicken veg fajita burrito and that was good. Rice was okay. I ordered through uber eats and was skeptical. The menu is barren, no descriptions of anything whatsoever. I was very uncertain about whether or not the food would come with rice and beans. For $16-$17 fajitas I thought it could go either way, but the menu sure wasn't going to tell me. The fajitas were superb. Well seasoned an juicy, but not dripping wet either. The rice is exactly how I like it and very soft. I didn't expect to get chips and salsa in a delivery order, but I must say that they have very good salsa. Not sweet marinara, not hot peppers and tomatoes in water. Real, chunky, just right salsa. Definitely worth their prices, will definitely be ordering from them again. I considered leaving off a star for their empty menu on uber eats, but their food doesn't warrant four stars, it deserves all five. Finally getting around to reviewing after eating here for several years for different occasions with large groups or take out for just myself. You go in knowing most Mexican restaurants are Americanized, so let's get that out of the way. The food quality and service has always been consistent although ironically, today a little slow. We usually get the owner waiting on us and that's always a fun time joking with him and learning new Mexican words. I was in need of a quick and filling dinner when I thought to try El Agave. So glad I decided to give it a try! I ordered Enchilada and chile relleno for take out and wow! The portions are big and filling. The food looked and tasted super great. I love how for take out the food is in an aluminum foil pan so it keeps it nice and warm. They also included a large bag of tortilla chips and a couple kinds of salsa. I was delightfully surprised by El Agave and will definitely go back and dine in Although I only ordered take out, I had a brief but lovely experience with the staff. I look forward to dining in next time!! Update! Finally got to dine in. Tried enchiladas la crema last night. It was rich in flavor and the servings were large. You won't leave hungry! One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in town, my family and I have gathered here for many meals over the years and never been disappointed. It seems as though one of the owners is always filling the server position there as he enjoys it and is a friendly and knowledgeable guy. I think his name is Alfonso. I've enjoyed many meals off the seafood and chicken menu selections, especially the fish tacos were delicious. I had the Super burrito this time and it came on a huge plate with side of rice and beans. It was stuffed with broccoli, cauliflower. onions, peppers, mushrooms, sauce and topped with cheese, guacamole and sour cream. It was delicious. Everything I've ever had here has been great and I would order again. Sometimes service is slow even though the place only has a few tables of diners. read more

As I sit here eating my leftovers for breakfast (don't judge me), I'm trying to reflect on this place as a whole. It's big - it's an old McDonalds or something - and it's got kitchy Mexican decor that makes it fun. Service is fairly slow, but then again, south of the border runs on a different time zones. In place of lightning fast service, however, everyone is SUPER nice and friendly. While service can really make or break an experience, the food has to count for something. The free chips and salsa are nice, and the chips come out warm. That's when I needed to check my mood elevator and "stay curious" about things, because it wasn't all the rage after that. Carnitas de pollo - don't be fooled. It's not going to be chicken with the carnitas seasoning. It was just peppers, onions, and chicken sauteed, sort of fajita style. The actual pork carnitas were ok, but Jalapenos is hands down the carnitas king, even if they're a few dollars more expensive. The last thing to note - I'm a student at UW, and live in Bellingham. However, in Bellingham (and El Agave is no exception), this seems to not hold any weight, as I'm not eligible for any student discounts. WWU, WCC, and BTC only. That might bump it up half a star. read more

The food is good. Not the best Mexican food I've ever had but not the worst either. Last time I was here I got a to go order and they forgot the green "salsa" but really more like taco sauce and sour cream. Most of the servers are very short with you and not up to small talk. Stopped here on our way out of Bellingham. We hit Bellis Fair for a little shopping action. I've been wanting to try this place for a minute but never found myself in a spot to get in. The perfect storm of hunger pangs and a nearby stop put me in that very spot. The interior was clean with lots of wood accents and your typical Mexican restaurant motif. They advertise " the best margarita in town" right on their sign but I didn't try one. We came in at that post lunch/ pre dinner time so there was one group of 8 women and us in the dining room. We were greeted and seated right away and the chips, salsa and drinks were there quickly. They give you salsa, cabbage based pico, and warm bean dip too. We ordered and the food was there quickly. I had the Burrito Colorado and it was mighty tasty. The beef was stewed perfectly in the red sauce and was a real treat. The rice and beans were in the burrito and it was smothered in more red sauce. Nothing was spicy so I added a little heat. Mrs Billy D has her go-to beef fajitas. It looked and smelled good and she had no complaints. No margarita for her either. The service was good and they were on the ball with chip and drink refills. Prices were in keeping with other places although they have a $20 burrito on the menu and there's a $10 up charge if you want carne asada in it. I can't imagine spending $30 on a burrito. It better be a darned fantastic burrito for $30, yo. There is a low class motel across the road and we were entertained by a man out on the sidewalk doing his thing. No harm done. It wasn't a very good deal either - glad I brought our Valpak coupon! Original review: been here a few times now with friends, and the rumors are true: they really do have a fantastic margarita! If you go during happy hour, it's only five bucks. Their queso dip is no slouch, either...yum yum. But what I really love about El Agave is their exceptional and friendly service. They treat you like family from the moment you walk in the door. Your order is taken quickly, and food delivered fast and hot. Met my friends here for lunch today, totes impressed! Great service, super clean, reasonably priced and good food; ticks off all right boxes for me! Fresh tasting chips, salsa and... pico de gallo! (most places charge extra) were brought to the table upon getting seated. We each ordered different flavored margaritas and were happy that they didn't skimp on the tequila! Great start! I ordered the lunch size Pollo en Mole. It came with beans, rice and warm tortillas and was the perfect size portion for me. (People with bigger appetites may want to order the dinner size portion). The mole was nice, a little more chile flavor and less chocolate...very smooth and lush. I love a good mole.
