Over a year ago we were told our little girl needed braces. We don't have separate dental insurance…read moreand were referred to Children's Choice Dental as they were supposed to accept a payment plan. At the first visit we were told the cost of the braces would be $3700. I thought that was reasonable and signed up for automatic monthly withdrawals: payments came out, our girl continued to go to appointments and everything seemed fine. After having her retainer in for a while, we were told it was time for her to move onto phase 2. We were never told, until that point, that there was a phase 2. Naturally we were surprised, but no big deal as it was just a progression in the progress of her treatment. Then we were informed the cost was going from $3700 to $7575. Both my wife and I were shocked....no one ever mentioned different costs to different phases. Not once in the entire year that we had been coming at that point was that mentioned; braces were already on her teeth though so what could we do? I asked to speak to someone about billing. I was told the manager wasn't on site. No problem, I said. I can call them. I was told they don't have a direct number. Can you believe that? They have no direct contact to the people that handle their billing? Seems sketchy. Finally, one of the receptionist handed me her headset to speak with someone who is in "billing." She proceeded to tell me my wife signed these contracts. I explained, I was there when she signed both contracts. I also read the contracts. Neither verbally nor in writing was it ever explained that there were different costs to the different phases. In the original contract the word phase is never even used. After the fact, I see the abbreviation ph1, which I now assume Means phase 1. I was definitely agitated and swore. When I explained it is illegal in the state of CA to have a consumer enter into an installment contract without divulging the entirety of the cost, I was told they could just stop rendering treatment. Can you imagine? Someone pulls a bait and switch on you, you call them on it and they then threaten you? Long and the short of it...Children's Choice dental will show you a price, put braces on your kid and then change the price after you are already committed and have no recourse or exit. If you question them, they will threaten you. Stay far, far away if you can....this place is a SCAM!

Shocking display of unprofessional behavior. Please Read to end! Dr. Kimberly Lang throws a fits…read moreand misses cavities!(possibly on purpose) My kids have been going to youthful smiles in Chico for years(approx10). We love the office set up but... the last time we went I think we got to see her true colors. My kids went for a routine visit. One kid had a loose tooth the other was visiting for the first time. We left the office thinking we were cavity free! (As usual) About 3 days after the visit, the tooth fell out and it had a substantial cavity that had been missed. The other child had a great first visit but Kim said they didn't need to get any x-rays (odd right). A few days after I noticed a black spot on the back tooth while brushing. I took my little back to her within 1 week. Kimberly looked and told me she didn't see anything. It was pretty obvious so I told her what I see and when she tried to look again, my little was getting fussy. We got him to open again(laying half in my lap and his head in Kim's lap)but when he wanted to sit up, they held him down. That was unacceptable to me so I intervened "that's enough" I said, and helped him sit up in my lap again. Dr. Kimberly Lang then slammed the dental tools down got up and stormed off. The assistants eyes got really big and she stared in the direction that Kim went. We sat there for a couple minutes and kim never came back. The assistant apologized, I paid and we left. After finding a new dentist (who took x-rays on first visit), they found problems. End story, my little has to get 2 baby root canals and another cavity filled. We are very good at flosing&brushing every day, we even use fluoride mouthwash. After asking around, Kimberly has had a history of throwing instruments across the room and getting frustrated when kids cry... why would you specialize in children's dentistry if you can't handle a natural response many of us have at the dentist?!

I first have to admit that Dr. Spaulding is clearly a knowledgeable man but the person who works…read morethe front desk and along side him during exams was much more pleasant than he was. I came in as a new patient and hoping to take care of a couple teeth that were becoming increasingly more sensitive due to the cavities they had. My mouth was in pretty bad shape and I already knew that going in. I was reminded of that fact several times throughout the short visit and he ultimately came across as dismissive and uninterested. They have a decent energy in the office (no real rudeness of any kind) but the visit definitely felt rushed. He also told me what he was going to be doing to my teeth rather than asking me what I was able to afford to do (since I lack insurance). He insisted that I get a couple teeth removed by an oral surgeon first (who I have recently set up a consultation with under Dr. Spaulding's advice) before I could get any other work done. This is understandable if the other teeth that need removal are somehow in the way of further treatment. I'm a college student with a limited income and I was going to be paying completely out of pocket so I was hoping to get a few teeth worked on at a time - that was never an option. His practice insisted I get them all done at once. He also insisted that the longer I wait, the worse my teeth will get - which I completely know & understand but how can I do that if I can't afford to get them done all at once? Why not help me handle the one's that were giving me immediate trouble and that I could afford to deal with at the time? After receiving this news, he left in a haste and seemed insistent that I immediately leave. I paid and left the office. It was a discouraging visit. At this point, I have thankfully raised the money I need to fix all of my teeth at his office (several thousand dollars worth of work) but I don't think I'll be returning. Even though I'm somewhat established here, I will most likely take my business elsewhere and get established there. I've seen a lot of positive reviews on here, and that may have been the experience for most people but it definitely wasn't mine. This is the first time I've felt inclined to share a review about any service I've ever received but I felt like it needed to be shared. Anyways, best of luck to anyone reading this.

I've NEVER had any any issue with anything or anyone at the office - all the staff is very kind and knowledgeable. Surh is former Navy, which I have a soft spot for as I have military family. In his waiting room, he has a photo of the ship he was assigned to, which I thought was a nice touch. He is obviously proud of his time in the military, which I appreciate greatly. The office is VERY clean, well kept, and there is water, coffee, tea, and other refreshments available in the wait room. Theres also a 2 TVs and a playstation, presumably for kids who might have to wait while parents or siblings are being seen. During the procedures, your room has 2 TVs mounted for distractions, including one overhead with subtitles always on (Lol, small details) for some additional distraction - normally tuned to HGTV, but the staff is always attentive and willing to change the channel if you prefer. Overall, I cannot recommend Dr. Surh enough. I've sent anyone who needs dental work to him and they all say the same - excellent service. Now the only downside: I have is that this man is the only DDS on site, so to see him, you may have to wait to see him. I promise you though, its worth the wait.
